00:22i remember i was being on a boat back from nantucket when you were out there for the
00:26messenger and it was the 20 foot 20 foot swells and i think i was smoking i can't remember if
00:34you
00:34were smoking out of the deck i can't remember but uh yeah i've since quit smoking um but i remember
00:42watching the dogs that's slide around on those deep swells and that was yeah sorry just uh flashback
00:53on that um well congratulations on motor city i mean look you know potsy and what he did is you
01:00know you don't see this done ever uh and it's tricky i would think as an actor because it's all
01:06about cadence i mean because you have to move like the character but is there music in your mind or
01:12was it music that he was providing for you to sort of play yourself too uh well you play the
01:18the the
01:19character you don't play the movie yeah uh but that said to your point you know music definitely
01:28is a great activator for all of us so i would come in with a boombox every day and just
01:34play what
01:34would get me in a zone rather than what would make the film work and i was like disco
01:41just a hardcore nile rogers chic like just get me like a fighter coming in to fight but you know
01:49got a boogie so uh you plan what you care about and you know if we get lost and defend
01:57that corner
02:15what did you want to know or how did you see that world that reynolds was existing in because
02:21you know he's a badass but he's doing everything his way but in that world i know it's
02:27set in detroit and you guys shot i mean jersey city shooting there must have been interesting
02:33anyway so it was cool it was a great crew uh the world's dynamite you know um the world itself
02:4270s disco revenge i'm like yeah let's get in it man uh let's go let's go uh the style and
02:53the music was so
02:57unique of that era and uh yeah i'd say music informs a lot of it it's really a revenge
03:08story but beneath revenge more importantly is that it's a love trying
03:12he's defending in his way uh the woman he loves trying to get her back so we have two animals
03:21going
03:21after each i mean the push and pull between you and uh not just alan which is expected but the
03:44between you and shaylee and how that dance because it's a very specific dance you guys are doing
03:51you know well she's a baller i mean she's just she is she's not messing around she comes to work
03:58she's a pro so getting to come to work and dance your words i'm like yeah let's let's go and
04:07let's
04:09show some of the things that happen behind some people's closed doors in complicated
04:18relationships well that's the thing is that the whole point of this whole thing is is just sort
04:22of that flow but the uncomfortability of the characters um did you have what did it take to
04:27get into the mindset i mean you play dark characters but he's he's pretty dark in a lot of the
04:32ways but
04:33he's also as you said he's doing it out of love which is sort of the big irony of it
04:38you know
04:39well we're a curious species aren't we tim the human animal we're a curious species yeah well people
04:48will do some crazy stuff in defense of what they care about and be it a border or a flag
04:54or the person
04:55they love the most and for my viewing experience i want to see those limits pushed and i think motor
05:05city pushes some values in a not an unsophisticated way but in a nuanced way
05:29it's very gritty but you know that's it's also you know it because you've
05:35done action before but this like the the scene on top in on top of the car i know there
05:40was a lot
05:40of stunt doubles but you still have to be in it you know could you talk about that because just
05:45with blood flying and especially with with alan alan's like a a block of stone i mean he's something else
05:52so yes he's very impressive uh uh and in person like you don't need like i'm not a tall guy
06:02not a big guy i'm five nine but uh if you give a shit when are you gonna give up
06:08and how do you
06:10chop a tree down yeah did uh when you first read the script just ask i mean how is it
06:18laid out i
06:19haven't read the script so how you know i know it was black one of the blacklist scripts like was
06:23considered like the one to make for many years but how did it read versus how you guys shot it
06:29or how
06:30potsy directed you well chad st john wrote the script and and i read it and i and i found
06:37myself
06:38to him halfway through the where's where where's the dialogue and i'm ripping through it it wasn't
06:45you know so and so goes somewhere it it's pulpy and it's sexy and it's gritty and kind of funny
06:51and dirty and unapologetic so it ripped as a script for me what is this uh and i want to
07:01be a part of
07:02it when i talked with potsy uh it was a quick shorthand uh of saying yeah we're gonna make a
07:09silent
07:09film but it's it's people being with people doing wild things to each other and for each other and
07:18let's go explore that in the 70s in detroit and let it on fire
