00:00How did Peru's territory change over time?
00:02Peru was originally inhabited by the Incas.
00:05The Incas expanded and created a massive South American empire.
00:09However, when the Spanish arrived in the 16th century,
00:12the Incas were conquered and Spain took over.
00:15They then created the Viceroyalty of Peru,
00:18which covered half of South America.
00:20But in the 18th century,
00:22Spain created the Viceroyalty of New Granada
00:24and later the Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata,
00:28significantly shrinking Peru.
00:30In 1821, Peru gained independence
00:32and a decade later they formed a confederation with Bolivia,
00:36but Chile and Argentina opposed it, causing its collapse.
00:40A few decades later, Chile declared war on Bolivia
00:43and Peru joined Bolivia's side.
00:45However, Chile won the war and Peru ended up losing territory.
00:49Soon, they lost part of the Amazon to Brazil as well.
00:52In 1941, Peru invaded Ecuador
00:55and secured its claims in the Amazon,
00:57helping establish Peru's modern borders.
