“We deserve to live lives free of pain and suffering.”

Yesterday, @kemidoll linked up with @ericachidi at Unbothered & Well: the new live experience from @r29unbothered at @essencefest, for a Talking Circle on womb health and advocating for ourselves as Black women when it comes to fibroids, heavy periods, endometriosis, and cancer.

Talking Circles are a communal space where collective wisdom exists without barriers or hierarchy. It’s a space to learn, share, and lean on each other. We asked a few women from the circle what they’re taking home.

We want to bring Talking Circles to your city. Now that we’ve wrapped NOLA — where should we go next?

00:00One message I want to give every black woman is that our womb health starts
00:03inside and it starts with us first deciding that we deserve to live full
00:07healthy lives free of pain and suffering. My name is Dr. Kemi Dole. I am a double
00:12board certified gynecologic oncologist, uterine cancer scientist, and health
00:16equity expert. When I heard I was gonna be part of the Unbothered and Well
00:20programming and being in the talking circles, I was like, put me in coach. One
00:24thing I learned since leaving the Unbothered and Well talking circle is
00:28that suppressed anger can actually cause fibroids. I learned that birth control
00:33really they were designed to stabilize your endometriosis and so we really
00:37should change the language that we call them so people understand the kind of
00:40health care that they're getting and understand what they deserve and we
00:43deserve better. I learned a lot about womb health, about reproductive health, and
00:47about how we don't need to just focus on black women's health when it comes
00:50specifically to reproduction, but just in general we need to take our pain
00:54seriously, we need to take our health seriously, and we need to make sure that
00:58we understand the verbiage and the terminology when we're going into these
01:01appointments so that we can advocate for ourselves. Together we can heal and you
01:06felt that in the room because when you're seen, when you realize you're not alone in
01:10what you're dealing with, and then you realize that there's somebody, a guide,
01:14somebody who has the information and the knowledge to help you get better, it's
01:17actually a joyful space. Everybody feels lighter because now things can be
01:21different going forward.
