00:00By always having long hair, it was sort of this sure way that I would be deemed
00:04like attractive by society. As I've gotten older, that's just started to
00:08matter much less to me. What's exciting about chopping it off is that I feel
00:12like I'm able to, you know, both shed the literal weight of my hair but also some
00:17of those perceptions that people might have about me because of the way that I
00:21might present with longer hair.
00:32Hi, my name is Masami Hosanna. I'm a hairstylist. My salon name is Vacancy Project.
00:38It's in East Village, New York City. My career started in Tokyo, Japan. I had a
00:45crush on my hairstylist when I was 17 and I just wanted to work with her but I
00:50ended up still doing hair. I moved to New York and I opened Vacancy Project 10
00:55years ago. I think most of my clients want a low maintenance, very natural, messy
01:01haircut. Also, big change. I really appreciate. They trust me. My haircut, it's
01:07$170. It's for any gender, any length, any hair type. So for Jackie, she wants to do a
01:14big job. I would call little boy band, hot lesbian, kind of a shortcut. Today we're
01:22gonna cut off about 15 inches. My name is Jackie and I live in Brooklyn, New York. I
01:27think when I look in the mirror and I see this image, it doesn't quite add up to
01:32how I feel and I've felt that way for a long time but haven't really done
01:36anything about it. I'm really excited to work with Masami today because I feel
01:40like they help people achieve a really effortless look that is true to them and
01:44that's what I'm looking for ultimately. What would you like to do today? I want to
01:48chop it all off. Once the length gone, I still want to keep some longer pieces in
01:53the front and ideally I don't have to do a lot of styling or any styling with it.
01:57I love that. Have you done a short hair before? No. The shortest is just my chin.
02:02Are you excited? I'm really excited. Me too. A little nervous? I'm a little nervous but I
02:06trust you and I... You've been thinking for a long time. Yeah, I've been thinking about it for a long
02:10time.
02:10I'm so excited. I've always gravitated towards longer hairstyles ever since I
02:16was younger and I think a big part of that was that my friends and family were
02:20always commenting on how they liked my hair longer and so I think I really
02:24thought that that was the kind of look that I should have. As I've gotten older,
02:28especially since I've become more comfortable with myself and my queerness, it
02:31feels like this unnecessary weight and I'm excited to kind of shed that. A lot of
02:37people who chop their hair off, they want to keep their hair, so today I'm using a
02:42little hair tie to keep some hair chalk. You're ready? Yeah. Let's go! Byeee!
02:51So cute! I cut most of the lengths first so it will be a bulb first. I'm going to
02:57wash Jackie's hair. It's so much easier because it was so long and then after
03:01wash, I'm doing little undercut part. I want to make it little natural, not like
03:07buds undercut. So it's a little softer and then I'm going to cut top part. This is
03:13also front part so it's very important what length it will be. I dry it. It's
03:19still a little chunky so after the dry, I texturize it. After the texturize and
03:24thinning out, I use a water sprayer to make the hair wet a little bit and put the
03:30shea butter. For daily styling, Jackie can just air dry it. But today I'm using a diffuser
03:37to make it look like air dry. I really love it! Yay! Thank you so
03:44much! You're welcome! It just falls so it's like water. Can I touch it? Please play around.
03:50I'm going to also slick bag, which I love. And you can kind of like style like that. That is
03:56fun.
03:57If you like the slanks, I would say like every three months to trim it. Yeah. And the shea butter.
04:02I
04:03recommend the shea butter because it makes some shape and a wet look, but I'm not too
04:08much. Yeah. I love the way it feels. Yeah. Thank you so much. Yeah. Enjoy! Coming in here, I felt
04:14nervous just because you never really know how you're going to react with a huge
04:18physical change. But looking in the mirror, I feel like me, which I think is
04:24also how I like to describe my gender, my sexuality, especially what has always felt
04:29best for me is just saying that I feel like Jackie and that's how I feel right now.
