00:00I'm at a stagnant point in my life.
00:03I definitely am excited to have the pressure of choosing
00:05a look taken off of me.
00:07And I'd love somebody else to just be like,
00:09you know what I think would look good?
00:11This.
00:11And then I'll be like, OK, great.
00:19Hi, my name is Shay.
00:20I'm a hairstylist at Harare, based in Los Angeles.
00:23But today, I'm in New York to do Sally's Hair Color.
00:25I've been doing hair for about seven years now.
00:28I graduated high school and then went to hair school.
00:32And as soon as I started, I realized how much fun it was
00:34and how creative I could be and how many different opportunities
00:38there were in the fields.
00:39I think people know me best for my creative color work.
00:42I do lots of unconventional patterns
00:44that you wouldn't typically see on someone's hair.
00:46Finding the specific creative look that will work best
00:49with their personality.
00:51I've had a few clients ask me to do a surprise color
00:54transformation.
00:55And they'll maybe give me a color or two
00:57and then just say, do whatever on the pattern.
00:59And it's always just fun to just kind of freestyle
01:01and see what happens in the moment.
01:03For Sally, I want to do this stripey, diffused color look.
01:07And then a textured bob.
01:09I think it'll be cool because I've seen they've done
01:11a lot of different colors and seem really down for a creative
01:15style.
01:15So I think this will just be a fun new look for them.
01:20Hi, my name is Sally, and I am getting my hair done today in a way
01:25that is going to be a surprise to me.
01:28I don't really need to choose it at this point.
01:30It's just a responsibility I don't want to have.
01:33I've seen some Harari stuff before, and it looks really
01:36like fun and colorful and interesting, which is so exciting
01:40because I have just had like pretty drab hair for a while.
01:44I've had so many different hairstyles throughout the years,
01:47every kind of cut and color.
01:50And I'm like out of ideas.
01:52I just haven't had it shaped or attended to in a long time.
01:56So now it's just a nothing hairstyle.
02:06Hi, Sally.
02:07Hey, Shea.
02:08How are you?
02:08Good, how are you?
02:10This is going to be really fun when we have planned for today.
02:12It will be good with like your texture and everything to kind
02:15of enhance what you already have going on.
02:17Yay.
02:18I'm so excited.
02:18Oh my god, I'm so excited.
02:20And a little nervous, but mostly excited.
02:22Yes, it's going to be awesome.
02:23Yay.
02:27To start with Sally's hair, we'll
02:29be spraying it down with some k-18 just
02:31to protect it from any damage that bleach could cause.
02:35I brought my own color kit with me.
02:37At this specific Harari location,
02:39we actually don't do color, but we're going to do it today.
02:42So we'll mix up some Gaiateng Lightener,
02:44and then we'll mix that with 30 Volume
02:46because Sally's hair is pretty dark.
02:48We're going to get their hair all sectioned out
02:50and start applying the bleach in a bit of like a different
02:54diffused line on the bottom just to create that soft line
02:57that will make that stripe that's not too harsh
02:59but still defined enough.
03:01We'll kind of keep working down that way in the head
03:03and take thin sections to like saturate the hair
03:07and then using foil to insulate it
03:10and make sure the hair can get nice and light.
03:12And in between the bleach, we'll be using a little bit
03:14of a darker color just to create even more layers on that color.
03:18Next, after we get that applied throughout the whole head,
03:20it'll be having a stripe on the bottom
03:23and then a bigger bleach stripe throughout the middle of the head
03:26and then going in on the top and having a little bit of like a bleach roots.
03:30So creating a big like stripey effect.
03:32I have no idea what's going on.
03:36This specific like pattern, I don't get it at all.
03:41And then once this is all processed, we'll have to go out and rinse it out.
03:44We're going to go in with a toner and neutralize any yellow tones
03:48and try to brighten up the hair.
03:50Let that sit for a few minutes watching it as it drops.
03:53Once that's there, we'll rinse it out.
03:55I know that you put bleach on in stripes,
03:59but like with the toning and stuff
04:01and there were so many like layers of it,
04:03I don't, I have no clue what the hell is happening.
04:08We're going to go in on the towel dried, rough dried hair
04:12and just apply a little bit of orange on the edge of each like bleach stripe
04:16in like a diffused line
04:18so that everything just becomes nice and soft, but still nice and bold.
04:22So then once that's all applied,
04:24we'll just let that one sit for a quick 10 minutes
04:27and then get that all rinsed out.
04:29And then it'll be time to cut Sally's hair.
04:32For the cut, we're going to do kind of like a razor textured bob.
04:35I think it'll be good since I think Sally has pretty thick hair and lots of it,
04:40so it'll be nice to just create some movement and texture in there,
04:44which I think also really complements this type of color.
04:47Getting lots of movement and just letting the color and the cut live together
04:51and moving the hair, so this is going to be great for Sally.
04:54When we were doing the color, it's like I'm just not looking,
04:57but now there's like a physical sensation.
04:59I'm creating this image in my mind and then I'm trying not to do that
05:02because I truly have no clue what's going on.
05:04I think I didn't realize how excited I was until now.
05:10Like, I really did want a haircut.
05:14I really did have very boring hair.
05:16Throughout the salon, I would say something like this would start around 300,
05:21just depending on someone's hair for the color.
05:24And then a cut like this would start around 110.
05:27It was also depending on the starting length of the hair and density and otherwise.
05:31It's so cool, guys.
05:32Three, two, one.
05:34Oh, my God.
05:36So sick.
05:37Holy.
05:39This is crazy.
05:41It looks so cool on you.
05:42Oh, my God.
05:42This is so cool.
05:51And you got it so light at the root and it's still, like, long.
05:55It's still, like, long and still it can be fairly old.
05:56That's so, which is so nice because I was so sure it was going to be, like, a shower, you
06:00know?
06:00I felt like I was sobbing, yeah.
06:01Yeah, but then, oh, my God, it looks so good.
06:04Now the waves are going to be so much more buoyant because they have less weight.
06:08This can be the central point of, like, me being cool.
06:11And I can wear just, like, baggy jeans and a t-shirt and that would look so much cooler than
06:16before.
06:17Exactly.
06:18It, like, really elevates it.
06:19I'm so happy.
