Dutch students unveil world's first solar-powered ambulance

Dutch students have developed what they say is the world's first solar-powered ambulance to improve healthcare access in remote parts of Africa. Named Stella Juva, the vehicle will be tested in Kenya in August with NGO Amref Health Africa.

00:23It's completely self-dependent, you don't need any electricity there, so if there's for
00:29example in such a remote area that there isn't any electrical grids, you don't need it, you've
00:33got solar panels, you can just stand still if you want to get more solar area, push out
00:38these extra solar panels and then you're just getting the extra energy to provide it and
00:43then you can still drive away, especially in areas where for example fossil fuels might
00:48be a problem with their availability.
01:00We've got an x-ray over there so that we can scan for example with patients of tuberculosis,
01:05one of the leading diseases in Africa, we've got an ultrasound so that you can make ultrasounds
01:11of pregnant women for example, an AED, so if you for example something happens to you,
01:18you need to get reanimated then of course that can also happen and so just a general EHBO kit.
01:25It is a country with a lot of grip off to the problems that I mentioned in the beginning.
01:30Take for example the overlaying of the surface.
01:43It can really contribute to the issue that many African countries have, is that the distance
01:48between very remote villages and healthcare facilities is really big.
01:53There's little public transportations, fuel is very expensive, electricity networks are
01:58unreliable.
02:00So a really cool innovation like the Stella Juva can help us solve such big challenges in healthcare delivery.
