A race for fuel-efficiency brings students to Qatar’s F1 tracks

At the Lusail International Circuit, home to Qatar’s Formula 1 Grand Prix, the roars of racing engines have given way to quieter cars. Nearly 1000 students from countries across Asia and the Middle East compete to design and drive the most fuel-efficient vehicles.

00:01We have 1,000 students here right now across 15 countries, 78 teams, all fighting to try and push the
00:10limits of how far can you go on a litre of fuel or a kilowatt of electricity.
00:18For the second year in a row, Qatar's Lusail International Circuit hosts the Shell Eco-Marathon, a competition that pushes
00:27aspiring engineers and young innovators to challenge the frontiers of technical excellence and energy efficiency.
00:36We're in our 41st year now, and it's just an absolute privilege to see the energy here, the curiosity, the
00:45creativity, the ingenuity of the students.
00:48And so the ability of this program to promote science, engineering, design, but also leadership skills, also IT skills is
00:57fantastic to see.
00:58It's a platform and a springboard for people to have a huge impact in careers, in technology and innovation companies.
01:07The Qatar round of the competition is held under the patronage of Her Excellency Sheikha Almayasa bin Khalifa bin Hamad
01:14Al Thani, chairperson of Qatar Museums,
01:17solidifying the country's commitment to sustainability and education, values that also align with Shell's wider strategy.
01:26A big part of what we stand for is making sure that we contribute and we give back to the
01:31communities and the society in which we design.
01:34Supporting Qatar and Qatar's National Vision 2030 and furthering those goals is something that is really, really important for us.
01:42We lean into educational programs, we lean into cultural development programs.
01:47So how exactly do the students conceptualize, design, and build a vehicle capable of traveling the furthest distance using the
01:57least amount of energy?
01:59We're a team from Bali, Indonesia.
02:01We have two cars here at the 2026 Shell Eco Marathon.
02:05So this is Nagapasa, our prototype concept at the battery electric category.
02:11But even before getting a spot on the track, the teams have to undergo a strict safety and technical inspection.
02:19We have a lot of technical regulations so that we can ensure that we have a fair and accurate measurement
02:23of their consumption.
02:24And our inspection makes sure that the driver will stay safe.
02:28To focus primarily on efficiency and not just speed, it takes a lot of skill sets.
02:33And it is always the skill sets from the students that inspires me the most.
02:36It's not just the mechanical engineers, it's the electrical engineers.
02:39Everything comes together and they're putting real-world practice into place.
02:44It's beautiful.
02:45With the green light from the inspectors and a stamp of approval, it's time to finally put their vehicles to
02:52the test.
02:52This is way different from learning in the classroom because we actually get to do things by our hand.
02:58We learn things in real time because we weld, we grind things, and those are the things you don't learn
03:05in the classroom.
03:06So it's really beneficial for us.
03:07Flying in from Malaysia, Hyperion Racing Team is also chasing a sense of community at the competition.
03:15We also care about the people here.
03:17We care about making friends.
03:18We are just trying to, you know, make sure that everyone's in a good mood, make sure that everyone is
03:21happy.
03:22When they meet us, they know that, you know, Team Malaysia is very supportive.
03:25Beyond the grueling hours, number crunching calculations, and healthy rivalry, many of these students have built friendships, bonds, and connections
03:34that have transcended languages, cultures, and borders.
03:38For some of us here, it's our first time going abroad, out of Indonesia.
03:43Meeting people from different countries, it's really eye-opening because we get to know how other people think, how other
03:49teams operate.
03:50That's a really meaningful experience for us because we get to know and we get to apply to how we
03:56do our things.
03:57As a Qatari girl, I'm so proud of my team because we are the only Qatari girls team on the
04:04university competition for Shell Eco-Marathon.
04:07And we are the only school team between the universities.
04:12The Shell Eco-Marathon Qatar kicks off the 2026 season for the program and sets the stage for a historic
04:20milestone for the competition in 2027.
04:24It's super exciting. We've always done regional competition, but for the first time in 2027, we're hosting a global competition.
04:33That global competition is now confirmed to be again here in Qatar next year for the first time ever.
04:39And so we're really, really excited.
04:41So as the winners are crowned, the torch is passed to the US, which will host the next round of
04:48the Mileage Challenge as the momentum continues to empower the next generation of energy innovators and STEM champions.
