Who will breakout for Washington in 2026?
Transcript
00:00Talking breakout players, and my guy Tricky's on hold already.
00:03I'm going to let him lead us off.
00:05Tricky, you got a breakout player for the commanders?
00:08What's up, fellas?
00:09How you doing, buddy?
00:11Hey, I just called in.
00:14I told Stallion I just wanted to pull your chain
00:17because for the last two weeks you keep saying,
00:20the caller who called in about Robert Henry Jr., that was me.
00:23My God.
00:26So I just wanted to mess with you on that one.
00:28All good.
00:30Yeah.
00:30Do you have a pick for a breakout player, or is it Robert Henry Jr.?
00:34Robert Henry Jr., and I think he's going to be returning kickoffs also.
00:38Wow.
00:39You are high on this young man.
00:40All right.
00:41I support it, though.
00:42Thanks for the call, Tricky.
00:44All right, 800-636-1067, 800-636-1067.
00:49Let us know your breakout player.
00:51We thought of this because pro football focus.
00:56It's funny.
00:57Has any, like, I don't know if you call them a media outlet or, like,
01:03an analytics company.
01:03I don't really know what you call them anymore.
01:05But I don't think any outlet like that has become more controversial, if you will,
01:13than pro football focus because players hate them and call them out all the time.
01:18What they do, they sit there and they tell you what they think should have happened.
01:23That's not how sports play.
01:25Hell, you know how many times I went into a play thinking what should happen, and I had
01:30to do 18 things different to get to the actual result, do they ever think about that type
01:35of stuff?
01:36They give a guy a grade on what they have set in their offices and said what they think
01:43is supposed to happen.
01:44They don't know what the offense states.
01:46They don't know what the play was trying to get.
01:48They don't know what the defense did.
01:49They don't know if you should run it against it or not.
01:50But they say this is what they thought was supposed to happen, so the guy gets a good
01:54grade or bad grade.
01:56Does that make sense anyway?
01:57I'd like me giving you a test, okay?
02:02And you don't know what the test is about, what's supposed to be going on, and when you
02:06finish, I tell you, oh, man, you failed this test.
02:08And you go, well, I didn't know none of that damn information.
02:12You see what I'm saying?
02:12Totally.
02:13That's what it is.
02:14And it's gotten, I mean, pretty, like, publicly nasty with, like, J.J. Watt often takes
02:20him to task, and Collinsworth defends him.
02:23All that said, Pro Football Focus listed Trey Amos on their all-breakout team.
02:30I liked Amos a lot last year.
02:31I thought he had a really good start to the season.
02:33Obviously hurt his ankle.
02:36PFF says Trey Amos is going to break out.
02:39What do you say?
02:40My guy Anthony is in Martinsville.
02:42What's up, Ant?
02:44Hey, what's going on, son?
02:45It's good to hear.
02:45What's happening?
02:46Good to hear from y'all.
02:47Good to have you, bud.
02:48Hey, listen, I want to tell y'all, first,
02:50I feel like since y'all branching out and y'all going to other platforms as well
02:55as Odyssey, I feel like everybody need a raise.
02:58Let me put that out there.
03:00Let me put it in the ether.
03:00Man, have you been reading my mind?
03:03You hear me?
03:04You hear me.
03:05Hey, I don't believe in all of them outlets and no money going in my pocket.
03:10You hear me?
03:12Listen, I think that Traylon Burks is going to go for, I think,
03:17I'm going to say between 5 and 600 yards, maybe about 45 to 50 catches.
03:24I think that it won't be a total 1,000-yard season, breakout season,
03:28but for him, I think that him coming back from a lot of injuries
03:31and injury-plagued seasons, I think that he needs a dedicated number one
03:36so that he can shine as a number two.
03:38I think that's how he should have been drafted in the first place.
03:41And I feel like out of all the wide receivers in the NFL,
03:44it is a great thing that he got Terry McClellan in his ear that can motivate him
03:49and help him and believe in him.
03:51And I really think that Traylon Burks is going to prove a lot of people wrong
03:55this year.
03:56So I'm pulling for him.
03:58I'm pulling for him, too.
03:59It's a good call.
03:59I also think he's just got to stay healthy.
04:03Yeah.
04:04His junior year.
04:04That's the main thing when it comes to football, man.
04:06If you're healthy, you have a possibility.
04:08Everybody can play, but if you're not healthy,
04:11then he's going to work against you.
04:13His junior year at Arkansas, 66 catches for 1,100 yards, 11 touchdowns,
04:17averaged about 17 a pop, had another 100 yards on the ground,
04:21finished with 1,200 yards, 12 touchdowns from scrimmage.
04:24Also, he's big.
04:25Everybody's like, oh, they need this big receiver.
04:27Burks is listed 6'3", 220.
04:30That's big.
04:31That's your big receiver if he's ready to go.
04:33And then, obviously, people want speed on the outside.
04:36He's got it.
04:39Like, there's so much conversation that maybe it's correct to be underwhelmed
04:47by Burks because the NFL production has not matched the draft position.
04:52But these guys didn't draft him.
04:54Like, they're not paying on that.
04:56No, no.
04:57Not at all.
04:59But it's like the health thing is real, man.
05:03The health thing is real.
05:06And guys got to understand.
05:07I tell most guys all the time, they tell me what they lift, how they run.
05:12I say, do you stretch?
05:14Taking any yoga?
05:16If they try doing that, they'll be around longer.
05:18But most guys don't do it.
05:22What's funny?
05:23His, I just pulled up his combine grade.
05:296.5, which grades out to exactly boom or bust potential.
05:36And the bust is the Tennessee days.
05:39That's not here.
05:40Washington didn't draft him in the first round.
05:42They didn't trade away A.J. Brown to draft his replacement.
05:47So, I don't know.
05:49If Burks is a breakout guy, then I think this team's damn good.
05:53Because then I think Terry stays healthy and this offense is functioning at a high level.
05:58Let's go to Mike in Annapolis.
05:59Mike, what's up, dude?
06:01What's going on, guys?
06:02How are you?
06:03Good, man.
06:03How you doing?
06:05Hey, so, B-Mitch, you know, the best ability is availability, right?
06:09100%.
06:09The follow-up is what you're saying.
06:11Yep.
06:13And, you know, I got my son's a college athlete, and I'm pushing him.
06:16I get in the pool, get in the pool, get in the pool.
06:18It will strengthen you in ways you have no idea.
06:21But to address your topic, breakout players.
06:23I'll give you one on offense and one on defense.
06:25On defense, I think Cross, if he falls into that category as a breakout player,
06:29I think we're going to see some big things out of him.
06:31He's a tackling machine, and he's got a freak running around in front of him,
06:35which is going to take a lot of focus and free him up.
06:37So I expect big things out of him for sure.
06:41He'll have a big opportunity.
06:43Yeah.
06:44On offense, I've got to go with Jalen Lane.
06:46I just can't.
06:46The success he had in special teams,
06:49I think they're going to figure out how to translate that into traditional offense.
06:53I think, again, going back to everybody staying healthy,
06:56there's a lot of options there.
06:58And I think they can move him around, put him in different positions.
07:00And I really expect big things out of him.
07:03All right, man.
07:03It's a good call, Mike.
07:04Thanks, dude.
07:05I think with Nick Cross, one thing that's going to be really interesting,
07:08I think Bullock posted this.
07:10I saw this somewhere online.
07:11A lot of – now, much like David Blau's offense isn't going to be a direct replica
07:17of Ben Johnson's, but there's going to be a lot of elements.
07:21Durante Jones' defense is not going to be a direct replica of Robert Flores, right?
07:25No.
07:25But there's going to be some elements of it.
07:27Yeah, yeah.
07:27A lot of Flores – typically, when you're running your nickel sets,
07:32it's two safeties, three corners.
07:35A lot of Flores' sets are three safeties, two corners.
07:39That, to me, is pretty interesting because I think I like the safety position on this team
07:44better than I like the corner position.
07:46And you're probably playing more high coverages because the safeties maybe can't run
07:51quite like the corners can, but I found that interesting, and I think that could lead
07:56breakout – just more snaps, more opportunity, whether that's Cross, like he mentioned,
08:03whether it's Will Harris, Quan Martin, Revo.
08:06They've got options on the backside there.
08:09Ryan, you said Robert.
08:11I was like, what are you going with that one?
08:13I called you Robert?
08:14No, you said Robert Flores.
08:15Brian Flores, you're right.
08:16Sorry.
08:17Who's Robert Flores?
08:18I don't know.
08:19Is that the dude from –
08:19Well, you said, I'm like, that don't sound right.
08:22Yeah, that's Road Flow from MLB Network.
08:24Yeah, Brian Flores.
08:25Pardon me.
08:27Rusty's in Delaware.
08:27What's up, Russ?
08:28What's up, Russ?
08:30How are you doing today?
08:31Good, man.
08:31How are you?
08:33Hey, not too bad.
08:34My breakout player.
08:35So, you guys know where I sit in the stadium.
08:37I'm going to have a little bit of a luxury of seeing guys.
08:40And, you know, I'm a big guy, and I played the big guy position.
08:43So, I like sizing up big guys.
08:46And when I – I had a brief conversation with Josh Connerly at the draft party,
08:52and what I took away from that was he has gotten bigger.
08:54He has increased in size.
08:56And with the amount of sacks and hurries that he gave up last year,
09:00despite playing every single snap,
09:02I think he's going to be the breakout player of the year,
09:04and what better to have another great offensive lineman.
09:07All right, man.
09:08Yeah, dude.
09:09You could – I noticed it, too, when I saw him.
09:12I guess – no, it would have been OTAs or whatever.
09:16You could see the shoulders.
09:18He's starting to fill out.
09:20He was a very young man when he got drafted here.
09:23Taking your calls on breakout players, 800-636-1067, 800-636-1067.
09:30B, you got a breakout guy you've been kind of watching for?
09:37Nah, not necessarily yet.
09:40But I'm still – I got to see him in pads.
09:43You know, I'm not going to just throw it out there like,
09:45hey, that's going to be the guy.
09:46I don't know.
09:48When I see him in pads, moving around a little bit.
09:51But I'm kind of like rusty a little bit.
09:53I'm leaning towards some of those people that smell like bacon.
09:59I want to see Antonio Williams in pads.
10:01I want to see Katron Allen in pads.
10:03I want to see Sonny Stiles in pads particularly.
10:06Katron in pads is what makes Katron special.
10:10Right.
10:11Yeah.
10:11Yeah.
10:13We'll see how that shakes out.
10:16But breakout's such a weird word.
10:19I do understand why Pro Football Focus would have Amos on their list.
10:25Do you think – are you at all concerned about this injury from last year?
10:30No.
10:31With Amos?
10:31I'm not either.
10:33I think it's – I think – didn't he say somewhere online –
10:40I feel like I saw this somewhere.
10:41Probably that dude, Brandon, that just like dominates Twitter.
10:46That he said he's going to be totally fine on a podcast or something.
10:49And whatever.
10:50You can't listen to players.
10:51I would suspect that.
10:52I would too.
10:54I mean, seriously.
10:57I think defensively, I'm curious if we see another one of these monster pain
11:03contract year seasons.
11:05I certainly hope so.
11:07I always – you know, I always fight against the contact year thing,
11:10but I would love to see it happen again.
11:14And, you know, contract year.
11:16I mean, not contact.
11:17Contract year.
11:18And you know what they should do?
11:19Give him one-year deals for the next five.
11:22If he's a guy that responds for a contract year like that,
11:25I'm only signing to one-year deals.
11:28I mean, a part of me almost wonders with Payne
11:34how many more big multi-year deals he's getting.
11:37Like, it might be multi-year in name,
11:39but the reality is probably it's a one-year.
11:42I mean, he's going to be 30 next offseason, I think.
11:46Bobby is in Stafford.
11:48Bobby, who's breaking out?
11:50Chin, our tight end.
11:52Okonkwo?
11:53Okonkwo?
11:54Yep.
11:55All right.
11:56Why do you like him?
11:57I will take that.
11:57He loves our tight ends, and he's an easy bailout option,
12:00and he's already had 400 yards every single season.
12:05All right.
12:05I like it, Bobby.
12:07Did we ever track down who Chig's quarterbacks were?
12:11No.
12:12So last year was Cam Ward,
12:14who there's obviously some excitement, right?
12:17I'm not pulling this up because I am curious about this.
12:20Tennessee Titans.
12:22He was there for three, four years?
12:24Three, four?
12:25Drafted, played there four years.
12:26This is his rookie deal expiring.
12:28All right.
12:29So last year, the leading passer was Cam Ward.
12:33Okay.
12:33For two straight seasons, it was Will Levis.
12:36The Mayonnaise guy.
12:38Yeah.
12:39Ryan Tannehill.
12:40So if you put mayonnaise in coffee, that means you win a good quarterback.
12:45Their offensive rankings over the last four seasons,
12:49with Tannehill, they were 28th in points scored.
12:52With Levis, at least consistency from Will Levi's,
12:5627th in points scored both seasons.
12:59And then last year with Cam Ward, 30th in points scored.
13:02Now, sometimes, Brian, there can be a disparity between points scored
13:07and yards gained.
13:08Sometimes you gain a lot of yards,
13:09you're just not able to get it in the end zone.
13:12With this Titans team, there is not.
13:16Tannehill going back to 22, 28th in points, 30th in yards.
13:21Will Levi's, 1.0, 27th in points, 28th in yards.
13:25Will Levi's, 2.0, 27th in points.
13:29They popped a little here.
13:3127th.
13:32They got all the way to 26th in yards.
13:34And then last year with Cam Ward, just a truly terrible team,
13:3830th in points, 31st in yards.
13:41Chica Conquo was the leading receiver on that team.
13:43That phone call there might be, he might be the one on point
13:45because if five is on, we know five will find his tight end.
