We are just TEN DAYS away from the Falcons kicking off training camp ahead of the 2026-27 NFL season. Does that mean we are 10 days away from the competition for QB1 beginning? That depends on Michael Penix Jr.'s health, who hasn't yet been able to fully participate in OTAs and minicamp. Mike Bell and Abe Gordon explain why the Falcons are better off if Penix wins the job... but there's no guarantee that happens.

00:00All right, man, we got Falcons camp, guys.
00:02It starts a week from Wednesday.
00:04That means, according to my watch and calendar, we are 10 days away.
00:0810 days away.
00:0910 days till we see the makeup of the Tommy Reese offense.
00:13What?
00:14You thought I was going to say something about MPJ?
00:18Zing!
00:20It'll end around.
00:21You didn't see that one coming, did you?
00:22For the last couple days, Carl, I believe, is writing these scripts.
00:25He denies it.
00:26I want to make one thing clear.
00:28Here, there's only one Mr. Voice, and it's me.
00:33I do believe that Carl's been in cahoots with Mr. Voice with a pro to a message last week,
00:39and a lot of Michael Penix Jr. fans very upset, feeling that we're making a mockery of this whole process.
00:43Well, guess what?
00:44The actual process that we can finally analyze will start starting next Wednesday.
00:49Um, or it won't.
00:50You know?
00:52Maybe it will.
00:53You know?
00:5510 days till we see the makeup of the Tommy Reese offense.
00:59Or 15 until...
01:00You thought I was going to say something about MPJ?
01:02He's cleared for 11 on 11.
01:03That's what we want to say.
01:04Or 18 or 21 or never.
01:06I don't know.
01:06We've gone round and round on this.
01:07As I said last week, some people get the jokes.
01:09Some people don't get the jokes.
01:11All jokes aside, though, I just want to get there alongside you guys Wednesday and have them tell me,
01:17Hey, we are green light for a competition.
01:21Or, hey, he just couldn't get there and the offense is to us and here we go.
01:25Like, I just want to know day one of camp.
01:27And that doesn't mean the quarterback's handed out if you have a competition.
01:33I just want to know that we are headed towards one.
01:35Are we going to get to camp and then have five more days, eight more days of having to debate
01:39whether or not there's going to be a competition in the second week of...
01:43You know what I mean?
01:44I mean, look, if you talk to orthopedists out there now, again, or Mike was asked, of course, you know,
01:48Michael says he's going to be ready.
01:50Of course he is.
01:50And he's got to believe that.
01:51He's got to, you know, build himself up.
01:53And hopefully, you know, things have gone better than what some orthopedists said would be the true, you know, recovery
01:58time.
01:59If you take it back to week 11 of the NFL in November, that might mean it's realistically maybe closer
02:04to Labor Day.
02:05That he's going to be ready to do everything you need him to do to compete against...
02:07And in that case, there's no competition.
02:09Correct.
02:09And that was always our fear.
02:10And that's the only thing we've ever tried to communicate.
02:13Now, sometimes we have fun with it tongue-in-cheek.
02:15We're not dogging Michael Penix Jr.
02:17These guys, you guys are so Sally sensitive on this stuff.
02:21Right?
02:21He's either going to win the job or he isn't.
02:23Nothing Carl and I say is going to make any difference about this.
02:25Either he'll be able to compete or he won't.
02:28Right now, though, the one thing that Carl and I have said, and I think Abe would agree, Tua has
02:31an advantage.
02:32Because he's been able to do all the things they've been asking of him.
02:34And Tua's a better quarterback by his own experience.
02:37Now, it didn't end well for him in Miami, but his completion percentage, the amount of experience, the numbers of
02:42touchdowns, everything, he's got it over Michael Penix Jr. right now.
