00:00Quake turns 30 today. Inspired by a D&D campaign amongst id Software staff, Quake's plot uses
00:06interdimensional portals known as Slipgakes to pit your character Ranger against a slew
00:10of monsters inspired by gothic horror and the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Quake was the
00:15first id Software game to use real-time 3D rendering, delivering unprecedented graphics
00:20for the time. It also helped popularize the multiplayer FPS. Rocket jumps, instagibbing,
00:25quad damage, we have Quake to thank for all of these terms. Subsequent entries redefined
00:29the series. Quake 2, released in 1997, was a grungy sci-fi shooter. 1999's Quake 3 was
00:36an era-defining multiplayer arena shooter, while 2005's Quake 4 had a sci-fi single-player focus.
