00:00Good morning, 97.1 Jim Costa, John Jansen, Heather Park.
00:05We've got Greg behind the glass and we are ready to roll on a Monday.
00:08Good morning.
00:09Good morning.
00:10How are you?
00:10How was your weekend?
00:11It was great.
00:11I love that this weather finally cooperated.
00:14Oh man, what a beautiful weekend, especially this Sunday and this morning.
00:18I know this morning doesn't count as a weekend or maybe it doesn't up until you have to go
00:21to work.
00:21Yeah, I think it does.
00:24But to be able to wake up and open the windows, let the house breathe a little bit and get
00:31some work done outside, you know, what, 61 when I woke up yesterday morning, this morning
00:36was like 58.
00:37It was absolutely beautiful.
00:39Now I know we're going to get some of the particulates in the air later today, but it's not supposed
00:45to be as bad.
00:46So, and if it's not as hot, I was going to say, I'll deal with it.
00:49Look, and the one day was really bad.
00:52Other than that, I mean, it was fine.
00:54And you're right now that it's cooling off a little bit.
00:57This is ideal weather for me.
00:58So I enjoyed it.
00:59Got outside a little bit.
01:00Also was very much inside.
01:02I did see the Odyssey.
01:03We can get to that a little bit later in the show.
01:06Did it feel like it was three hours long?
01:07Is it?
01:08It's near three hours.
01:09It's near three hours long.
01:10Yeah.
01:10But some of those movies, you watch them and they're like, you leave and you don't realize
01:16that it was three hours.
01:16I saw some people complain about pacing.
01:18It wasn't an issue for me.
01:19But I know those movies can really, it's a build up.
01:22You need to push the ball down the floor a little bit more.
01:24Yeah.
01:25Look, and it's, the whole point is it's a journey.
01:26So we're moving along.
01:28Yes.
01:28We're getting to that final act.
01:30But anyway, let's, let's start with a couple of things from sports.
01:33World Cup's done.
01:34Tigers take two or three.
01:35Yeah.
01:36And it was interesting yesterday when I text the both of you, because obviously Tom's
01:41out today.
01:42So I didn't want to bother him with some things that we'd be talking about today.
01:45And I was talking about the halftime show of, of the World Cup.
01:50And it was the first ever halftime show that they had.
01:53And a shout out to, to Heather Park's alma mater, Madonna.
01:57Oh yeah.
01:57Led things off.
01:59Good old Rochester Adams alum.
02:01And it was, so I text you guys and the response I got back was, oh, I didn't click over
02:09until
02:10you saw my message.
02:13Yeah.
02:13Once the halftime show got really going, it was also around the time the tiger game started
02:17and I said, all right, time to switch over.
02:19Right.
02:20And, and so I'm just curious because I've always been chastised for watching one of 162 instead
02:34of maybe a first round Pistons playoff game or whatever.
02:39It wasn't on the main screen.
02:40Now I thought this is the biggest sporting event in the world, right?
02:47It may not get the ratings here in the U S I don't think it'll match up to the Super
02:50Bowl in the U S but worldwide.
02:53More people were tuned into this game, whether it's on the Fox broadcast, Telemundo, whatever
02:59they're watching it on yet.
03:01You were watching one of one 62.
03:03I didn't miss any of the game.
03:05I missed some of halftime.
03:07I think there's a little difference.
03:08Oh, see the way that the way that you said it was like, oh, I just, I just clicked over.
03:13I mean, I'll reach.
03:14No, no, it's okay.
03:14I mean, Hey, it's, it's, it's, it's fine.
03:17I just thought you immediately tried to go at me, which is funny.
03:20Yeah.
03:20But I said, um, well, especially since I was watching the soccer game, which was surprising
03:25to me.
03:26Well, again, switched over halfway through with the tiger starting halfway through halftime.
03:31Oh, okay.
03:32Halfway through halftime.
03:33So I thought it was halfway through the game.
03:34I saw what, um, Madonna saw a little bit of a BTS Shakira.
03:39No, I eventually the best part.
03:41So that was BTS.
03:43I thought that for some reason, and I don't know my, was that a, it's a K-pop Korean band.
03:48Okay.
03:48That's what I thought.
03:49Oh, this is K-pop, but I thought K-pop was a band.
03:51It's a style of music.
03:52It's a whole genre.
03:53Okay.
03:53But they are probably the most famous.
03:54I bet you they ended up doing like a halftime show at the Superbowl just because they've
03:57tried to make it more global.
03:59Sure.
03:59Yeah.
04:00But Shakira's song is, is very like, that is the world cup.
04:03That's like the iconic world cup song.
04:05I didn't know that.
04:06I didn't know that either.
04:07I was just excited to see Shakira.
04:08Who was, who was the fellow that was singing with her?
04:11I have no idea.
04:12Okay.
04:12I didn't know if that was like a collaboration or he normally pops in.
04:17But he was great too.
04:18There was a lot going on though.
04:20There was.
04:20The best was the Muppets.
04:22The Muppets.
04:23I went nuts when I saw Animal on the drums.
04:27It was amazing.
04:29And then at the end you see Miss Piggy and Kermit and I mean, that's just that the whole
04:34cast of character was, was there.
04:36So it was, I thought it was well done because they, they put in so many different things.
04:43I wish Bieber would have sang a song that I knew.
04:46I was like, oh, this is what you're going for.
04:49Like he was fine.
04:50Oh yeah.
04:50He was fine.
04:51He did good.
04:52But I wanted to, I like to know a little bit more, like a more upbeat.
04:57Yeah.
04:57That's what it was.
04:58He killed momentum.
04:59Yeah.
04:59And I liked how they introed him.
05:00They had Ted Lasso out there.
05:02That was cool.
05:03The problem for me was, like it's, it's one of those songs, like I didn't know the song
05:09and then I hear him sing it.
05:11I kept thinking he was saying Hollywood, but he was saying Allelu and eventually it was
05:17Hallelujah.
05:18But I kept thinking he was like, wow, he's really pumping up Hollywood.
05:21I was like, oh my God.
05:25But okay, let's just, the game itself, Spain, the better team from start to finish.
05:30They're the best team in this tournament, start to finish.
05:32Greg's stat was ringing in my head.
05:33They just haven't given up goals.
05:35They pitched yet another shutout.
05:37What they gave up one goal in eight games of the World Cup.
05:40I mean, they were all over Argentina.
05:42If Argentina was going to win, they were going to have to get the penalties.
05:44Yes.
05:44And just kind of coin flip it.
05:46Yeah, it's going to have to be a shootout.
05:47And I felt like that was kind of their, okay, from a guy that doesn't know much about soccer,
05:53they were playing a very prevent defensive branded football, much unlike the consolation
06:00game that had 10 goals, which I can't believe I missed the highest scoring game of the entire
06:07tournament.
06:08But who watches the consolation game?
06:11Getting back to the championship game, it was fun because I was in some weird way, and
06:17I mentioned it when we were talking about who's going to win on Friday in the cookie
06:21jar.
06:22I picked Argentina because I just wanted to see Messi maybe go out on top.
06:27And who knows?
06:28In four years, he may be one of those guys that says, I'm not playing, and then all of
06:31a sudden he does.
06:31That means nothing to me.
06:33That's fine if he does.
06:34Um, but to go back to back on a guy that's had, you know, the career that he has had
06:40would have been a lot of fun.
06:41I thought that they were going to actually get to penalty shots because they were in
06:47this, what, second overtime.
06:48Yeah.
06:49And they kept talking about it.
06:50Hey, eventually this shifts to Argentina.
06:51They're down a man.
06:52They have it.
06:52They had what?
06:53No shot on net for like 80 plus minutes.
06:56If they can somehow get this to the penalty kicks, they are clutch and they had all the
07:02stats about all the games that they had won in penalty kicks versus Spain, which had
07:06decided, I think they had won one of their last five in penalty kicks.
07:09It was suddenly going to favor the, I guess the under the reigning champs were the underdog,
07:14but it would have favored the team that hadn't controlled play.
07:17Spain wins.
07:17Spain deserved to win.
07:19There's no doubt about that.
07:21Uh, quick thing.
07:22You mentioned the consolation game.
07:24Did you see the brawl that happened after?
07:25I didn't.
07:26Oh, yeah.
07:27There was a big push and shove and match.
07:29It was, it was actually better than an NBA fight.
07:31Oh.
07:32That's not saying much.
07:34No, but it's, I mean, so we got to set the bar, right?
07:36Yeah.
07:36Yeah.
07:36It's not a miles Garrett throwing a helmet, but no, it sounded like somebody need to be
07:40consoled.
07:42Oh, sure.
07:43Yeah.
07:43I saw a take that I agreed with, with the consolation game.
07:46So it felt very much like, um, like a bowl game, right?
07:50Teams that their seasons are done.
07:51They're just going to score as many goals as they can.
07:54Yeah.
07:54Fire both defensive coordinators.
07:56Should the goals of the consolation count towards the golden boot?
07:59Because it's a team that's already been eliminated that gets to play an extra game.
08:03So Mbappe scores two.
08:04He wins the golden boot.
08:06And I know they've probably always done it that way, but as an American flying in Messi,
08:11Messi had eight.
08:12So Mbappe had eight.
08:13Yeah.
08:13They would have tied.
08:14Messi would have won the golden boot.
08:15He was penalized.
08:16He would have, they would have tied the golden boot.
08:18Yeah.
08:19So he wouldn't have won the golden boot.
08:21He wouldn't have lost it.
08:22The tiebreaker is assists in which Messi would have had more.
08:25Oh, okay.
08:26Oh, there you go.
08:27I had no idea there was a tiebreaker.
08:28So Greg, you're clearly more of a soccer guy than either of us.
08:31I don't know if you agree with the take that it shouldn't count the goal scored in a game.
08:34You've already been eliminated.
08:37Just looking at it and being presented with this right away, I'm going to say no.
08:41It's a game in the World Cup.
08:42It counts.
08:42I mean, Messi got to play five more games because they kept winning in the knockout stage.
08:50So it's a game of the World Cup.
08:51Let's count it.
08:51Okay.
08:53I kind of said the same thing this morning when you brought this hot take up.
08:57Oh, yeah.
08:58Because it's always the consolation game has always been on the schedule.
09:02And you would have to go back and say, well, how many?
09:04How many golden boot winners actually played in the consolation game?
09:08And I'll let you go down that rabbit hole.
09:10No, thank you.
09:10But I'm sure it's happened before.
09:13So Mbappe wins the golden boot.
09:14He won it in back-to-back World Cups.
09:16France did not win either of those World Cups, but he was the best, most prolific goal scorer in both.
09:21Just a little thing to go back to this.
09:24We're talking about golden boot and what you do in the consolation game.
09:27Remember, back before I was born, the NCAA tournament had a consolation game.
09:34It was a third-place game.
09:36And I believe there have been some winners of Final Four MOPs who've played in that game.
09:40Interesting.
09:41I don't remember that.
09:43Well, yeah.
09:43If it was before Greg and – it was before both of us were born, I think.
09:48Maybe not MOPs of the tournament, but they made the all-tournament team or the all-Final Four team.
09:54Yeah, and that concludes the amount of soccer talk that we will have, and we will talk soccer again in
10:01four years.
10:02If people could put the pitchforks down.
10:04I'm looking at our show sheet.
10:05I don't believe there's any more World Cup reference for the next three hours and 45 minutes.
10:10Tigers.
10:12Well, next three years and 360 days.
10:19Tigers took two or three over the weekend.
10:22Makes yesterday a little annoying, but they took two or three over the weekend.
10:26And as I look at the standings, they actually didn't get any closer.
10:30They got a little further away.
10:31Four and a half back of the wild card.
10:33500 is no longer good enough to make the playoffs in the American League.
10:38Red Sox have won 13 in a row, powered by Jemai Jones.
10:42Tom made sure to send us that clip.
10:44But Orioles have also won seven in a row.
10:47The Tigers are playing better baseball, undoubtedly, since June 1st, but...
10:51So are other teams.
10:52So are other teams.
10:53Yeah, I mean, the Red Sox, they're not going to be on this heater like they've been on.
10:57They've won 13 in a row.
10:59Yeah.
10:59And so, yeah, okay.
11:01And they are playing better baseball.
11:03We thought they were going to be one of the teams in contention at the beginning of the year.
11:06That didn't start that way.
11:08Fired a manager.
11:09Make some changes in the front office.
11:10And now, all of a sudden, they got a little juice going.
11:12And same thing with the Tigers.
11:14They got a little mojo going.
11:15Not at the same level.
11:17And it is annoying that they lost yesterday.
11:20And you thought, with Casey Mize on the mound, this was going to be one.
11:24Like, they had this distinct advantage in the pitcher.
11:27He ended up, you know, whether it's, you know, the groin or...
11:33Yeah, they said the groin, but he got hit in the hand.
11:34I thought that initially might have been the issue.
11:36But after the game, it's that groin that's giving him trouble all year.
11:40Yeah, they had four hits.
11:42Two solo shots.
11:43They had one to start the game.
11:44Yep.
11:45And then they let the starter off the hook and didn't get to him again.
11:47Riley Green hit the other home run in the ninth.
11:51Crazy McGonigal stat.
11:52We can give that to people coming up next.
11:53Because when you are in the company of the Georgia Peach, it's pretty impressive stuff.
11:59So I'll give you that McGonigal stat coming up next.
12:01And then the thing I actually want to talk about, but I'm not sure how much I can talk about
12:05it.
12:05We'll do that next.
12:0697.1.
