00:03almost exactly a year ago to date something utterly wild happened the Sun
00:08sent out a tremendous solar wind into our system it was so powerful when it
00:12came into contact with the Martian atmosphere and magnetosphere it yanked
00:15them out into the cosmos stretching them to three times their usual size
00:19however it didn't happen the way anyone might have expected it was a rare
00:23phenomenon that hasn't been recorded since 1999 captured this time by the
00:27maven spacecraft in orbit around Mars they say both the red planets
00:30magnetosphere and ionosphere expanded by thousands of kilometers out into the
00:35vacuum of space with astronomers saying that when they saw the data it was
00:39almost unbelievable adding that it can now provide insights into not only the
00:43effects this has on Mars but how similar solar events can impact other planets
00:47they say this event was actually the convergence of two solar winds one weaker
00:51and one very strong one after the powerful wind past Mars it left what they
00:55were referring to as a void where the density of solar particles surrounding
00:58the planet dropped by a factor of a hundred meaning the Martian atmosphere
01:02was allowed to fill that space not being pushed by a dramatic solar event but
01:06rather pulled out in the absence of those very particles
