MLK is doing things differently with their middle-eastern/central asian spins on some classic inner-city sandos. 🇺🇿

We chatted to Myra, owner of this thriving new business, about her designs and passion for bringing this under-represented cuisine to Surry Hills.

In this ep of Monday Munchies we tried MJ’s juicy chicken sando, with delicious Uzbek flavours and soft tender meat, this went down an absolute treat. Thanks for having us Myra!

00:00It's so soft. Could be brisk here. Ooh, but it's got good spice.
00:03That is most definitely health.
00:04So welcome back to Monday Munchies. We're here at MLK Deli in Surrey Hills.
00:08We've had a lot of great sandwiches in Sydney, South Darling.
00:12I've even had Hugo's in Melbourne, but this is new.
00:16I'm a sandwich hunter. I found this spot on Google Maps. It's brand new.
00:20I don't think I've seen any videos on it yet, but I want to show you guys.
00:23So it's kind of in like a little bit of a quieter street in Surrey Hills.
00:26It's like still on Main Road, but it's not on Crown Street.
00:28It's a little like homely vibe, really good gourmet sandwiches, which is why we're here.
00:32We found the M in MLK, Myra, our owner, to come talk about the venue and talk about this sandwich
00:38because I want to eat it, but we've got to hear about the venue first.
00:41When did we open? MLK opened just shy of four months ago.
00:45We opened Easter long weekend, which was a pretty ballsy time to open, but we're all here for the risk.
00:50The reason we opened was just to do really good yummy sandwiches with a little bit of an ethnic twist.
00:56Myself being half Afghan, half Uzbek, I thought it would be fun to play on those flavors,
01:00bring something new to the palate because I felt like maybe those flavors hadn't been as explored in Surrey Hills.
01:06I also live here and I've lived here for a long time, so I really wanted the community to be
01:10here
01:10and it to be built around Surrey Hills as well.
01:13I don't know. What else can I tell you?
01:14We are looking at, this is the sandwich that my mom thought I was too crazy to put on the
01:20menu.
01:20This is the chicken that I had growing up.
01:22It is MJ's chicken, MJ being my mom.
01:24She's a saucy, messy sandwich and I let everyone know that.
01:27I'm going to wait for you to try it and then you tell me the rest.
01:30I've never had a Uzbek sandwich before.
01:32I'm going in.
01:34I can't tell you too much about the spices, but all I can tell you is that there is a
01:38tropical fruit in there in the sauce.
01:42Okay.
01:42I'm just trying to pick what the secret is, but I've got to shout out to this bread because,
01:48also can we shout out to the chicken?
01:49Because it's not like, look at it.
01:51It's so soft.
01:52It could be brisket.
01:54You tell me this is brisket.
01:54Ooh, there's got a good spot.
01:59As someone who's never had an Uzbek sandwich before, I'm impressed, but also inquisitive.
02:05I want to know what I'm having.
02:07You are having chicken that has been slow cooked.
02:10There has been a really, really vegetable packed spice that has been simmered down and mixed in with the chicken
02:17while it's been slow cooked.
02:18So a lot of the flavor actually comes from there.
02:20And that's a very Uzbek style way of cooking.
02:23Uzbek cooking is heavy on the proteins.
02:24We like our meat.
02:26But having said that, we implement the vegetables into the sauces and into the base of the flavors.
02:31So this is the MJ's Chicken Sandwich at MLK Deli in Surrey Hills.
02:36This has been another Monday Munchies.
02:37Where should we go next?
