00:21:40I see.
00:21:43Oh, wow.
00:21:45That's pretty great.
00:21:46It's just a flower.
00:21:50So how are you holding up, Kim?
00:21:53Fine.
00:21:55Can I get another adjective, please?
00:21:58I'm great, Ed.
00:22:06You're good from here, huh?
00:22:07You can actually hear yourself think.
00:22:10Yeah.
00:22:13So, you want to tell me what you're thinking about?
00:22:17Nothing.
00:22:19I know that's not true.
00:22:21Too slow.
00:22:23I don't know.
00:22:24Just stuff.
00:22:29What happened at that school wasn't your fault.
00:22:31You know that, right?
00:22:32You're not a bad person or any of the other dumb things
00:22:36those kids say.
00:22:37I seriously don't care what they have to say about me.
00:22:41Look, I really don't feel like having a therapy session right now.
00:22:45I'm not trying to be your therapist.
00:22:46I'm just trying to be your dad.
00:22:53Does what you're thinking about have anything to do with your being adopted?
00:22:58Because if it does, that's okay.
00:23:01I know we've talked about this before, but it's actually pretty common for adopted people
00:23:06to go through periods where they feel disconnected, not knowing where you came from, or the circumstances
00:23:16around your adoption.
00:23:18That can be confusing.
00:23:22There's nothing wrong with you, Sam.
00:23:25And I'm going to do everything in my power to help you feel better.
00:23:35I spy with my little eye something green.
00:23:40This whole place is green.
00:23:43Makes it kind of interesting.
00:23:45Leaves?
00:23:46No.
00:23:47But good guess.
00:23:49Maybe?
00:23:52Oh, come on.
00:23:55Grass.
00:23:56Guess again.
00:23:59Berm?
00:24:00It's the same thing as grass.
00:24:02No, it's not.
00:24:03What?
00:24:03You both are being too obvious.
00:24:05Think micro, not macro.
00:24:07What does that even mean?
00:24:14Inspection sticker.
00:24:16And we have a winner.
00:24:17Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
00:24:20Whoa.
00:24:30Everything, are you okay?
00:24:31I think we blew a tire.
00:24:34Ugh.
00:24:43What's your hit?
00:24:45Nothing.
00:24:52Okay.
00:24:53Let me try AAA.
00:24:55Oh.
00:24:58No.
00:25:00No.
00:25:00No.
00:25:00No.
00:25:00No service, remember?
00:25:03Right.
00:25:12Gin.
00:25:19I hate this game.
00:25:21Because you always lose.
00:25:24What time is it?
00:25:33I know what we can do.
00:25:36Sit for me.
00:25:37You can try on my new makeup line.
00:25:39I'm good.
00:25:41Might cheer you up a little.
00:25:44You're right, Mom.
00:25:46Makeup solves everything.
00:25:48Why is it that everything I say or do has to turn into a fight with you?
00:25:53It is not my fault that you are in this position.
00:25:56Don't forget why we're on this little adventure in the first place.
00:26:09I didn't mean that.
00:26:10Yes, you did.
00:26:11I'm the one stupid enough to get pregnant.
00:26:12I never called you stupid.
00:26:14All right?
00:26:15I just don't understand why you want to go through with this.
00:26:18You have your whole life ahead of you, Samantha.
00:26:22We sent you to the best schools.
00:26:24We gave you the best of everything.
00:26:25You have all our connections.
00:26:27And for what?
00:26:28You're going to be a mother at 16.
00:26:30I don't even know how this happened.
00:26:31Where did I go wrong?
00:26:32Now I'm just something you did wrong.
00:26:36You might want to add some lipstick.
00:26:37You're looking a little thin.
00:26:38Where are you going?
00:26:39Samantha!
00:26:41Mierda!
00:26:49Mierda!
00:27:35Mierda!
00:27:38Mierda!
00:27:39Mierda!
00:27:40Mierda!
00:27:41Mierda!
00:27:41Mierda!
00:27:44Oh, my God.
00:28:12Oh, my God.
00:28:15Oh, my God.
00:28:49Yeah.
00:28:51Not every day you save someone from drowning.
00:28:53What were you doing out there?
00:28:59I thought I heard something.
00:29:03Where are your parents?
00:29:05Up the road.
00:29:07We got a flat tire.
00:29:08My dad's trying to find reception so we can get out.
00:29:15I should go.
00:29:16No, wait.
00:29:20You shouldn't be out here by yourself.
00:29:23Let me drive you back.
00:29:24Put on your seatbelt.
00:29:42I'm John.
00:30:05It's a little side business in my hand.
00:30:15Sam.
00:30:17Where were you?
00:30:20Why's your hair wet?
00:30:22I'm fine.
00:30:23You're not fine.
00:30:25I'm stuck.
00:30:28She had a little accident up the road, but she's all right.
00:30:31Thanks for bringing her back.
00:30:33I heard you got a flat tire.
00:30:35Were you able to reach anybody?
00:30:36Oh, no.
00:30:37There's no service out here anywhere.
00:30:39Anything I can do to help?
00:30:41I mean, you want to take a look?
00:30:44Sure.
00:30:45All right.
00:30:46That's, uh, thanks.
00:30:50What were you thinking getting into some strange man's car?
00:30:53He could have taken you to his house or worse.
00:30:56You've got to be smarter than that.
00:30:57Where were you?
00:30:59The bridge we crossed.
00:31:01We crossed that bridge hours ago.
00:31:03There's no way you could have walked that far.
00:31:12What I said earlier.
00:31:13Can we just drop it?
00:31:15Please?
00:31:28That should do it.
00:31:30Leave that.
00:31:30I got it.
00:31:32What do I owe you?
00:31:33I don't want your money.
00:31:34I could use some water, though.
00:31:38Of course.
00:31:42Be right back.
00:31:51Did he change the tire?
00:31:52Yeah.
00:31:53He wants some water.
00:31:58Sorry to barge in on you.
00:32:00It's starting to drizzle outside.
00:32:17Thanks.
00:32:22What brings y'all from Philly?
00:32:28How'd you know we were from Philly?
00:32:31Must be your accent.
00:32:36I didn't know we had one.
00:32:41We're moving.
00:32:43Moving?
00:32:44Towards town?
00:32:49Emporium.
00:32:50Emporium.
00:32:52Never been.
00:32:54Nice place.
00:32:56Very nice.
00:32:58Has one of the best school districts in the area.
00:33:02That's great.
00:33:07I'm sorry.
00:33:08I didn't catch your name.
00:33:10I didn't know we had one.
00:33:11John.
00:33:13Well, John, I don't mean to be rude, but I think it's time for us to be pushing off.
00:33:22I understand.
00:33:25Thanks for the water.
00:33:28Stay safe.
00:33:37Do me a favor.
00:33:39Don't talk to strangers.
00:33:41Do me a favor.
00:33:55Don't talk to strangers.
00:34:20Can we go now, please?
00:34:26If we drive straight, we should be at the town in about an hour.
00:34:29Bye.
00:34:30Bye.
00:34:42Bye.
00:34:44Bye.
00:34:45Bye.
00:34:47Bye.
00:35:12Was that man John Belavid?
00:35:14No.
00:35:16Who'd you hear that name?
00:35:17The article in your briefcase.
00:35:18What article?
00:35:20Why were you in my briefcase?
00:35:23Sam, there's personal documents in there.
00:35:25Patient's orders, you know better than to go through my things.
00:35:27I didn't look at your patient's folders.
00:35:31Was it?
00:35:37I believe it was.
00:35:41Would someone please tell me what's going on?
00:35:43I did some research on the area and found information about a tragedy that happened years ago.
00:35:49Apparently a man named John Belavid threw his wife and newborn off a bridge.
00:35:55The man in our camper?
00:35:56I didn't realize it was him until he was inside.
00:36:00Oh, that's great.
00:36:02Our pregnant daughter driving around with a man who likes to kill women and children.
00:36:07Why isn't he in jail?
00:36:09I guess he finished his sentence.
00:36:11Why are you researching him?
00:36:13Good question.
00:36:15I research lots of things.
00:36:16Grocery stores, lawn care services.
00:36:19Homicidal maniacs.
00:36:20But why keep the article?
00:36:22What's so important about it?
00:36:25Look, it's late.
00:36:26Now's not the time to get into it.
00:36:28Get into what?
00:36:29We'll talk about it tomorrow.
00:36:30I want to talk about it now.
00:36:33Will?
00:36:35What's going on?
00:36:38Is he my dad?
00:36:41What are you talking about?
00:36:44Will, what is she talking about?
00:36:46Is he?
00:36:49I was going to tell you when the time was right.
00:36:51What?
00:36:52What time was that?
00:36:53You told me the agency didn't tell you about my biological parents.
00:36:56They didn't.
00:36:57I called the agency a couple of months back when everything was happening at the school.
00:37:01You did what?
00:37:02I thought knowing your background might give me more tools as we work through your emotional challenges.
00:37:10The bridge you took us to.
00:37:15Is that where it happened?
00:37:16I was hoping that if I exposed you to the location, eventually, we could confront your past trauma, which might
00:37:24be unconsciously influencing your current feelings.
00:37:28Cut the psychobabble, Will, for Christ's sake!
00:37:31So now I'm just some experiment for your book?
00:37:33It has nothing to do with the book, sweetie.
00:37:34This is all about helping you.
00:37:38This is so messed up.
00:37:40Sam.
00:37:42Sam.
00:37:50I'm sorry.
00:38:30I'm sorry.
00:38:56Did you fall asleep?
00:38:58No.
00:39:04Where are we?
00:39:06Almost there.
00:39:10You said we'd be there in an hour.
00:39:12It's late.
00:39:13Just pull over.
00:39:44Now go pop the camper.
00:39:48I gotta pee.
00:39:49You go first.
00:39:51I'll shine the light for you.
00:39:52I can't go with you standing there.
00:39:58Don't go far.
00:39:59I can't go with you standing there.
00:40:03Oh, my God.
00:40:05Oh.
00:40:13Oh, my God.
00:40:25Oh, my God.
00:40:36I don't know.
00:40:59I don't know.
00:41:20I don't know.
00:41:26Hello?
00:41:28Is someone there?
00:41:40Hello?
00:41:47Samantha!
00:41:50Where are you?
00:41:51No!
00:42:01Samantha?
00:42:23She's never had two so close together.
00:42:26There's been a lot going on.
00:42:28Yeah, there sure has.
00:42:31How could you not tell me, Will?
00:42:37You didn't want to know.
00:42:40We didn't want to know.
00:42:41We made the decision that we wanted to give her a clean slate.
00:42:45No, you wanted to give her a clean slate.
00:42:47I...
00:42:51I thought it would help if she'd face things head on.
00:42:55She's facing things head on now.
00:42:59Is that why we're out here?
00:43:02So you can expose her?
00:43:04Evelyn, this is my life's work.
00:43:06I spent years proving that exposure therapy helps.
00:43:10I don't want to hear it.
00:43:11Just...
00:43:13Leave.
00:43:14I can't even bear to look at you right now, Will.
00:43:16Oh!
00:43:50I don't know.
00:44:22I don't know.
00:44:54I don't know.
00:44:59I don't know.
00:44:59Mom!
00:45:00Dad!
00:45:04What is it?
00:45:06What is it?
00:45:20Did you do this on purpose?
00:45:23What?
00:45:25Did you bring her back here?
00:45:28I didn't make a single turn all night. I have no idea how we got here.
00:45:33At least we still know where we are. The campsite's just up the road.
00:45:37Yeah. And the highway.
00:45:42Will?
00:45:43Will?
00:45:46Will?
00:45:47What?
00:45:48Come on.
00:45:50What is going on?
00:45:51It won't start.
00:45:52What do you mean it won't start?
00:45:53I don't know.
00:45:54Just give me a minute.
00:45:54You don't know?
00:45:55Just give me a second.
00:45:56Come on.
00:46:09Come on.
00:46:10Come on.
00:46:14Come on.
00:46:16Come on.
00:46:33You do some late night writing?
00:46:36You fell asleep with the light on.
00:46:39You killed the battery, genius.
00:46:53We should be there by now.
00:46:55It's right up ahead.
00:46:56You said that 30 minutes ago.
00:46:58We're going back.
00:46:59All this walking is not good for her.
00:47:01Evelyn.
00:47:01Come on, Sam.
00:47:02Let's go.
00:47:03I don't want you out here alone with him around.
00:47:07What are you going to do if he shows up?
00:47:09Sit him down and ask him about his childhood?
00:47:11Jesus Christ, Will.
00:47:12I knew your work was more important to you than family, but this?
00:47:15Talk about a projection.
00:47:17That is not true.
00:47:18Then what are we doing out here?
00:47:19I already said I was sorry.
00:47:21Yeah, you're always sorry.
00:47:24I'm sorry about never being home for dinner because of sessions running late.
00:47:28I'm sorry about phone calls in the middle of the night.
00:47:30No wonder this happened to her.
00:47:31Look at the kind of man she has to look up to.
00:47:34Always someone more important than her.
00:47:36What are you talking about?
00:47:37There is no one more important to me than her.
00:47:43And what about you, Evelyn?
00:47:45You spent half of your life in front of a damn makeup mirror and then slathering that crap all over
00:47:50her.
00:47:50What kind of role model are you?
00:47:53Teaching her that she doesn't have any worth unless she's all dolled up like a damn prom queen.
00:47:58Why are you not trying to make her look like a prom queen?
00:48:00Evelyn, we're in the middle of nowhere and you look like you're ready to walk down a freaking catwalk.
00:48:05You don't think that plays on her psyche?
00:48:07Just shut up!
00:48:09You're talking about me like I'm not even here!
00:48:12You're both fuck-ups, okay?
00:48:15So you can stop arguing about it.
00:48:28Go with her.
00:48:29I'll find the sight.
00:48:45Samantha.
00:48:46I do not want to talk to you.
00:48:48Fair.
00:48:49Then I'll talk.
00:48:50You're right.
00:48:51I am a fuck-up as a mother.
00:48:53I want to give you everything.
00:48:55I never want you to feel unimportant, unloved, or unseen.
00:49:01I guess I just never considered that maybe your everything is different from mine.
00:49:11I got pregnant when I was 18.
00:49:16Some strange guy I met at a party.
00:49:20I don't even think I ever knew what he looked like.
00:49:23That's how drunk I was.
00:49:28I didn't dare tell anybody.
00:49:31My dad would have disowned me.
00:49:34El Viejo would have killed me first, then disowned me.
00:49:39I took care of it by myself.
00:49:42It was...
00:49:47I don't regret it, though.
00:49:50I wanted to make money.
00:49:53Lots of money.
00:49:55Be my own boss.
00:49:58So I worked obsessively for years.
00:50:03And it paid off.
00:50:05But I always felt like I was missing something.
00:50:12When I met your father, I realized that what I was missing was a family.
00:50:18We tried having kids, but it didn't work.
00:50:24When our doctor suggested adoption,
00:50:31I thought I couldn't love anyone who didn't come for me.
00:50:35But the first time I laid eyes on you,
00:50:40I fell in love with you
00:50:45in a way I have never loved anyone
00:50:48in my whole life.
00:50:51I've made mistakes.
00:50:54Lots of mistakes.
00:50:57Your father and I are not perfect.
00:51:01But we are proud of you.
00:51:04And we love you so much.
00:51:10Please don't ever forget that.
00:51:12You are so cute.
00:51:13Thanks.
00:51:24Good to know.
00:51:41You're so cute.
00:51:42Well, that's all you can do.
00:52:08Okay, yeah, I just need a minute.
00:52:12Okay.
00:52:16Alone?
00:52:17If that's okay?
00:52:23I'll be by the car.
00:52:53Yes.
00:52:55Okay.
00:52:57Yeah.
00:53:02Hello?
00:53:03Can you hear me?
00:53:41It's a little side business in there.
00:54:19You scared me.
00:54:20Got through the triple A.
00:54:22Oh, thank God.
00:54:24Where's Sam?
00:54:27Isn't she in the camper?
00:54:29No.
00:54:47Samantha!
00:54:50How could you leave her alone?
00:54:52She was right there.
00:54:55I...
00:54:56She wasn't out of my sight for one...
00:54:58More than one minute.
00:54:59Sam!
00:55:00Sam!
00:55:00Sam!
00:55:00Oh!
00:55:30I'm sorry!
00:55:30You're right there.
00:55:50It's fresh mint.
00:55:53Runs rampant in this area.
00:55:58I hope you don't mind, but I got to get this meat right while it's fresh.
00:56:05I'm surprised you found me out here.
00:56:08I don't get many visitors.
00:56:11I thought you were moving.
00:56:15You live here long?
00:56:1918 years.
00:56:21My wife and I came out here right after we got married.
00:56:27It was an old hunting lodge at the time.
00:56:29We got it for a good price.
00:56:31We tried our best to fix it up.
00:56:38Is that her?
00:56:44I tried to do her justice, but
00:56:48some beauty can't be captured.
00:56:52Where is she?
00:56:57Arlene passed away.
00:57:02How?
00:57:08She killed herself.
00:57:12She'd always battled with depression.
00:57:15I never thought she'd go through with it.
00:57:19Our daughter had been home with us a few weeks.
00:57:24Things seemed good.
00:57:26She slept well.
00:57:27She ate well.
00:57:30She was perfect.
00:57:38Then one night,
00:57:42I woke up and Arlene wasn't in bed next to me.
00:57:46I went to our daughter's crib, and she was gone too.
00:57:50I spent the whole night searching for the two of them.
00:57:55I called the police.
00:57:57The next morning, the phone rang.
00:57:58They said they found a baby tangled up in a piece of driftwood off the side of the creek.
00:58:09Arlene's body had floated downstream.
00:58:12I went to the hospital to pick up my daughter, but they wouldn't give her to me.
00:58:18Said there were bruises on Arlene, like someone had pulled her in.
00:58:23The papers ran with it.
00:58:25And just like that, I lost everything.
00:58:28I was charged with first-degree murder, even though there was no evidence.
00:58:34Couldn't afford a real lawyer, so some local one was given to me.
00:58:42Convinced me to plea down to voluntary manslaughter.
00:58:4815 years versus life.
00:58:58I'm sorry.
00:58:59I haven't talked about this in a while.
00:59:05You okay?
00:59:10Can I use the bathroom?
00:59:14Yeah, uh, only got an outhouse, so I never got around to putting in plumbing.
00:59:18It's around the corner to the left.
00:59:48I'm sorry.
00:59:49I'm sorry.
01:00:06Let's go.
01:00:07I can't wait.
01:00:07Have a good minute.

01:09:22They should have never brought us here.
01:09:27I just, I wanted to fix it.
01:09:32So I could fix us.
01:09:34You can't fix anyone, Will.
01:09:36You know that.
01:09:38Right?
01:09:43Look, I get why you went searching into Sam's past.
01:09:49I didn't want to know anything about any of that.
01:09:53I never did.
01:09:56I don't want her past to define her.
01:10:03I want her to have a clean slate.
01:10:08But now that I know, I'm glad that I know.
01:10:15I'm sorry.

01:22:17God.
01:22:24God.
01:22:27Too much to be on the land.
01:22:55Perhaps the most talked about ghosts in Clinton County
01:22:58are the ones found here at the crossing of Mill Creek,
01:23:01what many locals know as Crybaby Bridge.
01:23:05Excuse me, I'm interviewing people about the Crybaby Bridge incident.
01:23:09Would you mind commenting?
01:23:10We visited the bridge when I was a teenager.
01:23:12We actually yelled, I killed your baby.
01:23:14And did you ever see anything?
01:23:16No, we were too scared to stick around.
01:23:18Yeah, it's a nice walk in the fall.
01:23:20The color of the leaves and all that.
01:23:22Only thing I gotta say, you bring snacks or drinks or whatever,
01:23:25you take your trash with you.
01:23:27There's so many places that become local lore and legend
01:23:30that they're targets for vandals.
01:23:32It's just so sad, people have no more respect for nature.
01:23:36I used to take girls out there on Halloween
01:23:39after I'd cruise around town in my cherry red Chevelle.
01:23:43Head out there for a little bit of chills and thrills.
01:23:46Fear.
01:23:47That's the greatest aphrodisiac, let me tell you.
01:23:51They call it the Crybaby because, well, after nine months,
01:23:57that's what you end up with.
01:24:01Dr. Glass, you've written books on the Crybaby Bridge legend.
01:24:04Would you mind commenting on the latest tragedy?
01:24:07Unfortunately, it's just all too common a story.
01:24:10A new mother killing herself and her baby.
01:24:13It's a tragedy, yes, but it has nothing to do with legend.
01:24:18So you don't believe a ghost had anything to do with it?
01:24:20Oh, certainly not.
01:24:21The Clinton County Crybaby Bridge is, well, it's an internet hoax
01:24:26that was seeded in the late 1990s.
01:24:30If you do your research, Crybaby Bridges were popping up
01:24:33all over the country at that time.
01:24:35It was, well, it was almost an overnight appearance.
01:24:38You see, postpartum depression and psychosis
01:24:42was not something that was talked about until recently.
01:24:46And to take such a tragic tale
01:24:49and turn it into a kind of amusement park,
01:24:52I just think it is, it is personally,
01:24:54it is reprehensible for a community to embrace.
01:25:00You won't find me near that bridge.
01:25:02Not with my babies.
01:25:03Why's that?
01:25:04Hey, I said keep it down in there.
01:25:06Sorry.
01:25:07So, me and my friend Jessie, we were driving.
01:25:10We come up to this bridge and we seen this white figure
01:25:13saying, where's my baby? Have you seen my baby?
01:25:16We were terrified.
01:25:17We had never seen anything like that before.
01:25:19All of a sudden, I heard this baby crying
01:25:21in the waters of the river down below.
01:25:23Don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for this ghostly mom
01:25:26or whatever searching for her baby.
01:25:28Maybe she needed our help that day,
01:25:29but we were just too scared, you know?
01:25:31Do you go there often?
01:25:33Sometimes.
01:25:34And what do you do there?
01:25:35You know, hang out and stuff.
01:25:37Do you ever see or hear anything strange?
01:25:39What, like that lady and her baby?
01:25:41No, it's just a story.
