The government does not interfere in the appointment of management companies to operate ports and only requires that Malaysian hold a majority stake in the company, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said the government's policy is solely to regulate the shareholding structure of such companies.

Loke was responding to a question regarding a Reuters report on the appointment of Emirati national, Sultan Ahmed Sulayem, as executive chairman of MMC Port Holdings Bhd.

Considered as one of the UAE's most powerful figures, Sulayem resigned from Dubai-based DP World in February after scrutiny over email exchanges with convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein, that were released by the U.S. Justice Department.

00:00Okay, can I ask something else?
00:02Something else?
00:03Negeri 9, India...
00:04It's on MMCport.
00:06Reuters reported that they have appointed a foreign national as an executive chairman.
00:12My question is, has that gone through approval from MOT?
00:16And if yes, did it involve any selling of shares by Telki Seymota to foreign national?
00:21As far as we are concerned,
00:24untuk kerajaan, kita hanya kawal sendiri dari segi shareholding.
00:28Shareholding itu mesti untuk konsesi-konsesi dan juga aset-aset yang penting strategik negara,
00:35termasuk pelabuhan dan sebagainya, it must be majority owned by Malaysian.
00:39Okay, 51%. That is our policy.
00:41Tetapi dari segi management, biasanya kerajaan tidak mencampuri pengurusan syarikat.
00:49For your information, there are actually ports held by foreign CEO,
00:54macam PTP.
01:14Tetapi, shareholding, yes.
01:17Kalau melibatkan apa-apa perubahan share,
01:20dia mesti laporkan kepada pihak kerajaan, kepada UCAS.
01:24So, in terms of shareholding, can you verify with that?
01:26As far as we are concerned, no.
01:28We have not received any information yet.
01:31We have not received any notification from the company nor from the concession.
01:38Alright?
01:39Yes.
