At least one dead, 100 injured in crush at Indian chariot festival

At least one person died and nearly 100 were taken to hospital on Thursday (July 16) in a crush at a popular chariot festival, the 'Rath Yatra', in Puri in eastern India, officials said. During the procession some devotees were taken away on stretchers, while others were transported to hospital in ambulances. Fire and emergency services officer, Dr. Umashankar Dash said nearly 100 people were hospitalised after complaining that they could not breathe. The festival commemorates the annual journey of three deities, Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, in specially-made and heavily decorated chariots to Gundicha Temple, their aunt's (Goddess Gundicha) house which is situated two kilometres away from the main Puri Jagannath Temple. The celebration has been attended by over one million devotees in previous years who travel from across the globe to partake in the tradition.
