Before the first emperor, before the first shrine, before Japan had a name, there was only darkness. From that darkness came the kami. This is the complete family tree of the Japanese gods, told from the very beginning to the very end: from the invisible primordial gods of the Kojiki, through Izanagi and Izanami's creation of the islands, the birth of Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi and Susanoo, the eight headed serpent Yamata no Orochi, the trials of Okuninushi, the descent of Ninigi with the Three Sacred Treasures, and the rise of Jimmu, the first emperor, whose bloodline still sits on the Chrysanthemum Throne today.
