00:00Electronic bikes will be banned across the Mersey Rail network from 1 January next year,
00:06after a safety review raised concerns about lithium-ion battery fires. The operator says
00:12incidents remain rare but can spread rapidly, creating serious risks in stations, tunnels
00:17and onboard trains. The ban covers non-folding e-bikes, conversion kits, modified bicycles
00:23and detached batteries. Standard pedal cycles, folding e-bikes, approved mobility scooters
00:29and powered wheelchairs will still be allowed. Mersey Rail says it will focus on educating
00:35passengers before enforcement begins, with those carrying banned items facing action under
00:40railway bylaws from New Year's Day, 2027.
