The four-year period of relative calm between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement has come to an end after a new wave of missile attacks and counterclaims.

The latest escalation began after Yemen's internationally recognized government said it struck the runway at Sanaa International Airport to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing. The Houthis, however, accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out airstrikes on the airport and vowed retaliation.

Within hours, the Houthis launched ballistic missiles toward Abha International Airport and two Saudi military bases. Saudi Arabia's coalition says all incoming missiles were intercepted by air defense systems before reaching their targets.

As both sides exchange accusations, fears are growing that the collapse of the four-year truce could trigger a new phase of direct confrontation and further destabilize the Middle East.
