Damaging winds and unusually high tides are set to batter the coast from Monday July 13, 2026. Strong westerly winds are currently sweeping across Bass Strait, bringing powerful gusts to Tasmania and its islands. This intense wind flow is also affecting alpine regions in Victoria and southern NSW, with potential for blizzard-like conditions in snow-covered areas.

00:00South Eastern Australia copping the brunt of damaging winds and very high
00:04tides throughout the course of Monday and that is the focus of this severe
00:08weather video I'm Angus I'm here at the Bureau today is Monday the 13th of July
00:12let's dive right into it what is happening well a cold front has moved
00:16across Tasmania this morning and behind that cold front we see this burst of
00:20really strong westerly winds moving from down here through the Bass Strait
00:24funneling some really damaging wind gusts around parts of northern Tasmania
00:28and that's a little bit easier to see if we just change the map so we're looking
00:32at the wind focus on the reds focus on the purples that's the strongest wind flow
00:36here see how it really funnels through the strait that means it's really gusty
00:40around northern Tasmania parts of the the islands in Bass Strait as well it's a
00:45little tougher to see on this map but also getting very windy around the
00:48alpine areas in northern Victoria and southern New South Wales tonight as this
00:52cold front moves away notice how we drop back to greens and yellows that means
00:55the wind is easing tonight another little pulse of strong wind waiting in the wings
01:00for tomorrow although that one unlikely to be quite as windy as today so what
01:05warnings have we managed to squeeze out of the strong wind event well there's
01:08quite a few of them small areas but numerous areas now in northern Tasmania the
01:13northeast the northwest and the islands here in the Bass Strait it's really
01:17powerful westerlies throughout the course of today hundred kilometer an hour wind
01:20gusts may be stronger in a few spots that will peak this afternoon before
01:25easing off this evening a little further northwards across Alpine Victoria and the
01:29snowy mountains those winds could continue into this evening and tomorrow
01:33morning probably easing before sunrise on Tuesday the winds up here could be a
01:39hundred and ten kilometers an hour and there has been quite a bit of snow
01:41recently that means that snow could get blown around and whipped up and lead to
01:45very low visibility and blizzard like conditions alongside these wind warnings
01:50we have a separate set of warnings these are not for wind these are for
01:54abnormally high tides around the high tide time this evening Monday evening so
01:59for an example the lakes entrance high tide is around about 10 past 7 p.m. this
02:04evening that time will vary a little bit depending on where you live on the
02:08coast but generally it is going to be between 6 and 8 p.m. this evening where we
02:13could see really high tides the water sitting well above the usual high tide
02:17mark potentially leading to inundation the warning extends from the southern
02:21tip of the Mornington Peninsula down past Wilson's prom and out towards Orbost so
02:26it covers the majority of the Gippsland coast and we have a similar high tide
02:30warning for southeastern Tasmania in and around the Hobart area this one extends
02:35from Orford down to Dover the high tide here is a little bit earlier in the
02:39evening approximately 6 30 p.m. around Hobart and similar for most surrounding
02:44areas now to summarize some of the impacts that we expect to see from this
02:48severe weather over the next 12 to 18 hours of course we could see wind damage
02:53that means trees down and potential damage to property maybe some power
02:57outages but we could also see seawater inundation that means flooding at the
03:02coastline as that seawater rises onshore into places it can't normally reach that
03:07can mean flooding for walkways car parks some roads and potentially some property
03:12as well and of course both of those can lead to travel delays and travel
03:16disruption so there's a really good reason to keep an eye on your weather
03:19forecast any weather warnings if you live in southeastern Australia for today
03:23you can always get the latest updates on the Bureau's website and the BOM
03:26weather app thank you so much for watching and stay safe
