00:06:12In a matter of months, 10,000 settlers, miners and merchants poured into the Furnace Hills.
00:06:18The largest of these mushroom towns was Furnace Creek.
00:06:24Meanwhile, an investigation of the massacre was being held at Fort Leavenworth,
00:06:28resulting in court-martial proceedings against General Fletcher Blackwell,
00:06:32who was charged with sending the order that recalled the cavalry escort.
00:06:38Captain Walsh, you've already testified that the wagon masters showed deep concern at General Blackwell's order.
00:06:44Exactly how did he express himself?
00:06:46First, he said that he would refuse to continue with the trip if we left him without escort.
00:06:51I advised him that I had to obey my orders.
