The Most PAINFUL Birthday Party Deaths Ever

Birthday parties. They're supposed to be about cake, presents, and, you know, happy memories. But sometimes, a celebration can turn into a nightmare in the blink of an eye. This first one… this one is particularly brutal.

Meet Lizzy Hammond. A sweet 5-year-old girl at a birthday party in Reno, Nevada, on a hot summer day in July 2019. The centerpiece of the party was a big, colorful, inflatable water slide. You know the type. Kids bouncing, splashing in a little pool at the bottom. Lizzy was there with her 2-year-old sister, Abby, and her 4-year-old brother, Danny. Just a perfect summer day.

00:01Lizzie Hammond Birthday parties.
00:05They're supposed to be about cake, presents, and, you know, happy memories.
00:10But sometimes, a celebration can turn into a nightmare in the blink of an eye.
00:14This first one? This one is particularly brutal.
00:19Meet Lizzie Hammond, a sweet 9-year-old girl at a birthday party in Reno, Nevada, on a hot summer
00:25day in July 2019.
00:28The centerpiece of the party was a big, colorful, inflatable waterslide.
00:32You know the type. Kids bouncing, splashing, and a little pool at the bottom.
00:37Lizzie was there with her 2-year-old sister, Abby, and her 4-year-old brother, Danny.
00:42Just a perfect summer day.
00:43And then the wind picked up. Not just a breeze, but a sudden, violent desert gust.
00:49Lizzie's mom, Wendy, saw the massive inflatable start to lift and screamed for the kids to get out.
00:54She managed to grab her toddler, Abby, trusting Lizzie, the responsible big sister, to help her little brother.
01:01But there was no time.
01:03The wind ripped the entire bounce house from the ground, knocking Wendy over.
01:08The whole structure, with Lizzie and Danny still inside, shot upwards, directly towards a set of high-voltage power lines.
01:15The cheerful, pastel-colored vinyl slammed against the dark, buzzing wires.
01:19The bounce house deflated, and the children fell.
01:23Lizzie didn't die from electrocution.
01:25She suffered massive blunt force trauma to her head when she hit the ground.
01:29She was rushed to the hospital, but the damage was too severe.
01:32Her parents described her injuries as astronomical.
01:36Skull fractures, a swollen face, internal bleeding.
01:40She died two days later, surrounded by her family.
01:44The most heartbreaking part?
01:46As she was kept on life support, the hospital staff formed an honor walk, lining the hallways as her bed
01:52was wheeled to the operating room.
01:54Her kidneys and liver were donated, saving the lives of three other children.
01:59Her family later started the Lizzie Hammond Foundation, pushing for Lizzie's Law to create stricter safety regulations for inflatables.
02:06And the owner of the bounce house?
02:09He didn't even get a fine.
02:12Cuba Libre Bar
02:14From a backyard party to a nightclub.
02:17This next one happened in Rouen, France in August 2016.
02:22A group of friends are celebrating a 20th birthday in the basement of the Cuba Libre Bar.
02:27It's a small, cramped space, but it's their private party.
02:31The walls and the low ceiling are covered in foam for soundproofing.
02:36You can probably see where this is going.
02:38Just before 1am, a young woman brings down the birthday cake.
02:42It's lit up with candles and those little fountain sparklers.
02:46As she's coming down the narrow staircase, she trips.
02:49The cake goes flying.
02:51The burning candles and sparklers land on the floor and roll against the foam-covered walls.
02:57The result was explosive.
03:00The foam, which was extremely flammable, ignited instantly.
03:05Because of the low ceiling and the small enclosed space, the fire spread with terrifying speed.
03:11Within seconds, the entire basement was a raging inferno filled with thick, black, toxic smoke.
03:17There were about 20 young people, mostly between 18 and 25, packed into that tiny room.
03:24There was only one way out.
03:25The same narrow staircase the cake came down.
03:29Panic erupted.
03:30People were trampling each other in the dark, choking on the poisonous fumes, their lungs burning.
03:36Most of the victims didn't die from the flames.
03:39They died from asphyxiation.
03:41The fire department was there quickly, but by the time they put the fire out, 13 people were already dead.
03:47A 14th victim died later in the hospital.
03:50The scene in the basement was described as a charred, blackened box.
03:55Melted plastic dripping from the ceiling.
03:57The smell of burnt foam and death.
04:00It was the deadliest nightclub fire in France in over 40 years.
04:06And it all started with a birthday cake.
04:08A simple, happy tradition that, in the wrong place at the wrong time, turned into a death trap.
04:16The Helium Hit
04:19Okay, this next one is different.
04:22It's a death that happened because of a party trick.
04:26A stupid, seemingly harmless party trick that everyone has seen, or maybe even done.
04:31But this time, it went horribly, horribly wrong.
04:35It's September 10th, 2022, in Teppuke, New Zealand.
04:40Faith Waterman Batistich, a 20-year-old mother of two, is celebrating her youngest child's very first birthday.
04:47It's a happy, family-filled day.
04:50There are streamers, balloons, and a big helium cylinder in the corner to fill them up.
04:55At some point, the helium voice jokes start.
04:58You know, taking a puff from a balloon and talking like a chipmunk.
05:02It's dumb, but it's funny.
05:04Then, someone gets an idea.
05:06Why not inhale the helium directly from the cylinder?
05:09It'll be even funnier, right?
05:12Wrong.
05:13So, so wrong.
05:15Faith is hesitant at first, but she's eventually talked into it.
05:19Someone turns the valve on the industrial-grade cylinder.
05:22What comes out isn't a gentle puff of gas.
05:25It's a high-pressure, high-flow jet of pure helium.
05:29According to her twin sister, the stream shot out so fast it was like it went behind her neck,
05:34filling her lungs in a fraction of a second.
05:37She collapsed instantly.
05:39There was no lightheadedness, no giggling, just down.
05:43Her family, thinking it was a joke at first, quickly realized something was terribly wrong.
05:49They started CPR.
05:50They called for help.
05:52Paramedics worked on her for 45 minutes, but it was no use.
05:56She was gone.
05:57Here's the science.
05:59When you inhale from a balloon, you're getting a mix of helium and air.
06:03When you inhale directly from a pressurized tank, the helium displaces all the oxygen in your lungs.
06:09It literally pulls the oxygen out of your blood.
06:12Your brain is starved of oxygen, and you pass out in seconds.
06:15On top of that, the sheer pressure can cause barotrauma, rupturing the delicate air sacs in your lungs and causing
06:23you to drown in your own blood.
06:25It took just 0.2 seconds to deliver a fatal dose.
06:30A birthday party trick turned into an execution.
06:37Some birthday challenges are just Darwin awards waiting to happen.
06:42This one took place at a pub in Wales.
06:45It was a birthday-themed event, and one of the main attractions was a fairy cake eating contest.
06:50The rules were simple.
06:52Stuff as many of these little cupcakes into your mouth as you can, as fast as you can.
06:57I mean, what could possibly go wrong?
07:01A young man in his early 20s was all in.
07:04He was cramming cake after cake into his mouth, barely chewing, just swallowing them down.
07:09And then, one of them got stuck.
07:12He couldn't breathe.
07:14He couldn't speak.
07:15He started panicking, clutching at his throat.
07:17The fun, drunken atmosphere of the pub turned to horror in an instant.
07:22People rushed to help, but the cake was lodged deep in his airway.
07:26By the time paramedics arrived, it was too late.
07:29He had suffered irreversible brain damage from the lack of oxygen.
07:34Choking is a terrifying way to die.
07:37You're conscious, you're aware of everything, but you are completely helpless.
07:41A burning sensation in your throat, immense pressure in your chest, and the blackness closing in.
07:48All for a stupid, drunken contest.
07:52Over a cupcake.
07:55Jason Greenwood.
07:57This next one is a dad trying to be cool for his kids.
08:01And it ends in the most horrific way imaginable.
08:04It's January 2018.
08:0746-year-old Jason Greenwood is at the Extreme Air Park in Richmond, Canada for a family outing.
08:13It's a massive indoor trampoline park filled with kids and music and neon lights.
08:19Jason, a stepfather to three, decides to show off.
08:23He tells his family to film him as he attempts a front flip into a giant pit filled with foam
08:29blocks.
08:29You know, one of those dad does a trick moments.
08:33He gets a running start, bounces high on the trampoline, and launches himself into the air.
08:39But his rotation is off.
08:41Instead of landing on his back or his feet, he goes into the foam pit head first.
08:46And then, he doesn't come back up.
08:49He just disappears beneath the surface of the colorful foam blocks.
08:54At first, no one thinks anything of it.
08:57But after a minute, his family starts to get worried.
09:00Panic sets in.
09:01A group of people start frantically digging through the foam,
09:05while other kids are still jumping on the trampolines around them.
09:08The coroner's report later described it as a very chaotic scene.
09:13They finally find him, deep in the pit, upside down, his neck bent at an unnatural angle.
09:19He had suffered a high cervical spine fracture, which paralyzed him and stopped his breathing instantly.
09:26He was likely conscious for part of the 21 minutes it took for firefighters to get him out, trapped and
09:32suffocating under a sea of foam.
09:34The coroner stated that faster medical help could have saved him.
09:38The park staff had no first aid training.
09:40Their only instruction in an emergency?
09:43Call 911.
09:46Owen Carey
09:48Our final story is a tragedy that could have, and should have, been avoided.
09:54It's April 22, 2017, and Owen Carey is celebrating his 18th birthday in London.
10:00He's out with his family and his girlfriend, having a great day.
10:04Owen had severe food allergies his whole life, especially to dairy.
10:08He was always careful, always checking labels, always telling restaurant staff about his allergies.
10:14For lunch, the group goes to a popular chain, Byron Burger.
10:19Owen orders a plain grilled chicken burger.
10:21He tells the server explicitly about his dairy allergy and is assured the chicken is safe for him to eat.
10:27He takes one bite, just one, and he knows something is wrong.
10:32A tingling in his mouth, a tightness in his throat.
10:36The chicken, it turns out, had been marinated in buttermilk.
10:40He and his girlfriend leave the restaurant to continue his birthday celebration, heading towards the London Eye.
10:46But Owen's condition is getting worse.
10:48He's struggling to breathe, using his asthma inhaler over and over, but it's not helping.
10:54Near the London Eye, in front of crowds of tourists, he collapses.
10:58He was having a severe anaphylactic reaction.
11:02His airway was swelling shut.
11:04Paramedics arrived, but it was too late.
11:07He died right there, on the pavement, on his 18th birthday.
11:11All because a restaurant failed to take his allergy seriously.
11:15The coroner later ruled that Owen was misled by the menu.
11:20His family started a campaign for Owen's Law, demanding clear, mandatory allergen labeling on all restaurant menus.
11:27They didn't want any other family to go through what they did.
11:30A birthday that should have been a celebration of life became a memorial to a life cut tragically short.
11:36Have a great weekend.
11:36.
