00:00Oh!
00:01Oh!
00:06One of the biggest fireworks shows of the night
00:08is going to illuminate New York City
00:10over both the East River and the Hudson.
00:12It is going to be a beautiful sight,
00:14and I cannot wait to watch it alongside.
00:16You know what I can't wait for?
00:17The Goo Goo Dolls
00:18because they're going to take us closest to heaven
00:22and the closest we'll ever be with their performance.
00:25We've got the one New Orleans favorite,
00:28Trombone Shorty also coming up.
00:30So much more ahead, only here on CNN.
00:33Don't go anywhere.
00:36When I was about seven years old,
00:37we were celebrating the 4th of July
00:39with a family cookout in Elgin, Texas,
00:41and I found myself in a hive of fire ants.
00:45So my mom gave me Benadryl,
00:47and it knocked me out for seven hours.
00:49But when I woke up, it was to the loud sounds
00:52and glorious sights of the fireworks.
00:55I mean, I didn't know what was going on,
00:57how I got there.
00:57I didn't even know who I was,
00:59but I knew where I was in America.
01:01The land of the free
01:03and the home of the pretty strong
01:05over-the-counter medications.
01:15Oh my gosh.
01:29This is Dana Bash with Boris Sanchez in Washington.
01:33And you could see why.
01:35Because it looks like it's monsooning in Boston.
01:37So we'll wait for that to make its way out.
01:41Magnificent air show that everybody can get behind here on the National Mall.
01:45And there's just so much to get excited about.
01:48You see, we are in D.C.
01:50There is a bit of a delay in the program behind us because of storms that are coming.
01:56But it's all going to take place, we know, very soon.
01:58Look at that picture, Boris.
02:00Look at that incredible shot, I should say.
02:03Incredible.
02:03The New York skyline.
02:04Honestly, it doesn't even look real.
02:05But it is.
02:06It is, folks.
02:06Doesn't it make you want to climb this fire all the way?
02:09No, it doesn't.
02:09Not even in the least.
02:12The effects and the fireworks are going to dazzle those skies you're looking at over
02:17the East River and the Hudson River.
02:19Plus, the hilarious Craig Ferguson is going to be with us just after the break.
02:24Stay with us.
02:26I'd say that hands down the most important and inspiring moment in American history is the
02:31first one.
02:32The moment Thomas Jefferson sat down and wrote, all men are created equal and declared that
02:37we all, every one of us on the planet, have God-given rights that cannot be taken from
02:42us.
02:42And then the 55 other members of the Continental Congress signed on to it with him.
02:47We had us a new country to live in, a reason for being, a place to go, and a North
02:53Star
02:53to navigate by.
02:54And you can't beat that.
03:08Welcome back to CNN's 4th of July special.
03:12You're looking live at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where there is currently
03:16a big weather delay.
03:18We're hoping that the storms pass, but the skies are dark and we can bring you the nation's
03:23capital's massive fireworks display later on tonight.
03:27Right now, though, a delay in place because the weather not looking great.
03:32In D.C., Derek, what's happening there?
03:38So, Sarah and Victor, we just saw lightning in the background behind us.
03:43We'll need to track storms right within the app.
03:46It's been just to our north.
03:48It's been to our south.
03:50But there is another cluster of storms to our west.
03:53And that's what we don't want to see because that's approaching this massive outdoor event
03:58where thousands of people have gathered, where there's virtually no shelter.
04:02Actually increased the threat right here across the mid-Atlantic, some of the nation's epicenter
04:09for outdoor events, including this incredible, great American fair that we are currently located on.
04:18You should listen to authorities because it usually is quick and you can come back,
04:21but you don't want to put yourself in danger.
04:23Wait, we should mention where we are because right now we have the best weather right now.
04:27It is gorgeous.
04:28We are on the 86th floor, the observatory of the Empire State Building.
04:34In Kennebunkport, Maine, at the Arundel Wharf, which is, for my money, the best restaurant
04:41in, I think, the best restaurant here, right?
04:44Okay.
04:44Hey, everyone.
04:45Say happy 4th.
04:45Happy 4th of July.
04:46Happy 4th of July.
04:47Haley is 10th bar here during the summer, but when the school year is on, Haley is a...
04:52Teacher.
04:53Exactly.
04:54Get off.
04:54Hey, we're getting closer to tonight's sensational fireworks shows, including in St. Louis,
05:00which is going to be beautiful over the arch there.
05:03Just look at the Gateway Arch there.
05:05Will be illuminated later tonight.
05:08There it is.
05:09Beautiful.
05:09And we've got some great music ahead, of course.
05:12Coming up, performances from Charlie Puth.
05:14EGOT winner Jennifer Hudson.
05:16You know she's going to blow the top off.
05:19And country superstar Maren Morris.
05:23I just remember 4th of July, my dad always doing fireworks.
05:28When I got older, I took it a step higher, I think.
05:31And I literally just put on, like, a whole fireworks show for the whole block.
05:34And it's probably about a good 2-3K worth of fireworks that I normally get.
05:41And, yeah, everything's bigger in Texas.
05:43So, it's a big celebration for the 4th.
05:45It's a big celebration for the 4th.
05:46It's running, man.
06:01And welcome back to the 4th in America, celebrating 2-50, a CNN special event.
06:06An amazing shot there in New Orleans, on the mighty Mississippi.
06:10The temporary weather delay has passed here in Boston.
06:14Thankfully, the crowds are coming back to hear the Boston Pops to watch the fireworks.
06:22I'm here with Pamela Brown.
06:24It was a deluge of rain.
06:27It was quite something.
06:28And you were smart.
06:29Anderson brought a change of clothes.
06:31I got, like, five changes of clothes.
06:32I'm ready.
06:33Yeah.
06:33I'm fine.
06:34And I gave up wearing a shirt.
06:35I'm just like, you know what?
06:36A t-shirt is probably safer.
06:38It's fine.
06:38We're fitting in with the crowd behind us.
06:59And we are back now in Boston.
07:02A packed schedule still ahead tonight.
07:05We are going to be seeing Chance the Rapper.
07:07He's going to be performing here as we wait for the sun to set and the fireworks to begin.
07:12That's right.
07:13Also still to come, we're going to put some miles on it with a performance by country music star Kane
07:19Brown.
07:22My favorite 4th of July memory is from 1976.
07:27My father was taking us from Kansas, where I grew up.
07:31We were going on a vacation to Florida.
07:33There was a Caribbean band.
07:35And they were playing steel drums in their thick Caribbean accents.
07:40They were singing happy birthday, America.
07:44And that stayed with me and still stays with me.
07:48That, to me, is exactly what America is and what America is all about.
08:01And welcome back to the 4th in America celebrating 250, a CNN special event.
08:06I'm here with Pam Brown.
08:07You're taking a live look at the National Mall where there is weather delay that we are hoping quickly passes.
08:13As DC is hoping to set a record tonight with the biggest fireworks show ever.
08:19Here in Boston, we have overcome a storm.
08:22Crowd was evacuated.
08:24Everybody's back.
08:25We are counting down to what is going to be a remarkable fireworks show, illuminating the skies over the Charles
08:29River.
08:30And right now, I have the distinct pleasure to welcome one of the most iconic documentary filmmakers
08:34who has chronicled some of the most important chapters in American history, my friend Ken Burns.
08:38His latest film, The American Revolution, is streaming now on PBS.
08:43And it is extraordinary if you haven't already seen it.
08:45Ken, I know the 4th of July is your favorite holiday.
08:48You are with your family.
08:50And that's after I Love You.
08:54We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,
08:59that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights,
09:04that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
