00:00This is The Conscious Investor, presented by Nuveen.
00:02This week, I want to take a look at Nuveen's third annual Responsible Investing Survey,
00:07which shows rising interest in working for, shopping from, and investing in companies
00:11that have a positive social and environmental impact.
00:15And this is even more true for millennials.
00:17The survey was conducted online in June 2017 and included over 1,000 affluent investors.
00:23These investors were all U.S. residents with over $100,000 in liquid investable assets
00:28who are currently working with a financial advisor.
00:31The survey found that 76% of investors say they'd like to work for an employer
00:36that makes a positive social impact on the world.
00:38But that number is 91% for the millennials surveyed and 70% for the non-millennials.
00:4576% of investors also say they'd like to work for an employer
00:48that makes a positive environmental impact on the world.
00:51This breaks down to 92% of millennials and 70% of non-millennials.
00:5672% of investors say they prefer to shop for brands
00:59that have environmentally sustainable business practices.
01:02This was true for 90% of millennials and only 64% of non-millennials.
01:07And millennials want to invest alongside these values.
01:1164% of all the people surveyed said they care more about having a positive impact on society
01:16than doing well financially.
01:18But 92% of millennials agreed with this statement.
01:21And only 52% of non-millennials feel this way.
01:24It's clear that millennials think about social responsibility differently
01:28than the generations before them.
01:30So we asked some of our friends and colleagues in this age group
01:33to weigh in on these trends.
01:35So what I think makes my generation different than older generations
01:39is the fact that we just have so much information readily available to us
01:43at our fingertips.
01:44Like if I want to know how climate change is affecting a marginalized group
01:48in a developing country, I can Google that and find out in 10 seconds.
01:52My grandparents, when they were growing up, they grew up in the Great Depression
01:55when they were young.
01:56So that's kind of what they were brought into the world with.
01:58My grandpa and my grandma both have the tendency to hoard things
02:02and buy things that are on sale just so they can have them around the house.
02:05Whereas I don't do that at all.
02:08I like to have a few things that are just really nice that I use all the time.
02:10And I don't see myself buying a bunch of things just to sit around my apartment
02:14because it just kind of wastes a lot of time, a lot of resources, and a lot of money.
02:18My grandparents didn't have internet access or only had one newspaper or word of mouth
02:24and then also didn't have any money.
02:26So they were focusing more on like a survival mode of purchasing.
02:30So nowadays I have more money and I have the internet to like access information.
02:36I have friends that know about this stuff.
02:38So it's a lot easier for me to figure out what I want and what I can use.
02:43I feel like we tend to speak up more.
02:44And I feel like that is new and different from my parents' generation at least.
02:49And I think it's a very powerful thing that we have a voice now.
02:54And we see that in so many different events that are happening around the country.
02:58We see kids that are my age or even younger that are finally having a voice
03:02and people are actually listening.
03:04With the rise of social media, I think it's more and more important
03:07for us to be associated with brands and companies that share our same values and morals.
03:12When the survey asked if they would put all their money in responsible investments,
03:1652% of all the affluent investors said that they would.
03:19But 92% of millennials said they were likely to put all their money
03:23in responsible investments.
03:25That's a big difference and indicates a shift in investing priorities.
03:29The more stuff I read, the more issues I find out that I'm interested in
03:33and want to pay attention to.
03:34As it all contextually aligns, I support brands, companies that are able to
03:39make that positive social impact and allow me to be a part of that.
03:42So I would rather take a pay cut or buy something that I like a little bit less
03:48if it means that it makes other people more comfortable.
03:53The more stuff I think it's going to affect, I will never get from this.
03:54and you're exaggerating that you're resto of the Oside media,
03:54like fan organization, you try to make that have a better price.
03:55So I'm the best to help your life.
03:55but you've read making that money,
03:55The YouTube channel and plenty of different things to join you right now.
