00:03Our planet is doomed, we already know that, but Earth's natural destruction isn't slated for a few billion years at
00:10the earliest.
00:11However, now experts raise the question, what are the chances of a rogue star entering our solar system and destroying
00:16everything way ahead of schedule?
00:19It might sound far-fetched, but a new study posits that it's possible, and if a rogue star comes too
00:23close, things could get dicey in a hurry.
00:26Rogue stars often occur in systems that interact with black holes, where a sudden burst of energy from the black
00:31hole literally sends the star careening out into the cosmos.
00:35And experts believe that in the next billion years, there's a 1% chance a rogue star will enter our
00:40solar system.
00:41So what will happen if that does occur?
00:42The study outlines that if the rogue star whizzes past us at around 100 astronomical units, or 100 times the
00:49distance of the Earth to the Sun, there's actually a 95% probability of survival.
00:53Still, their calculations reveal, there's a 2.54% chance of Mercury getting thrown off orbit and gobbled by the
00:59Sun, and a 0.81% chance it might collide with another planet.
01:03Meanwhile, there's a 1.21% chance that Mars will end up colliding with our central star, and a 0
01:08.24% chance that same thing might happen to Earth.
