Fresh from the Nordoff & Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards, Melanie C joins us to talk about celebrating 30 years of the Spice Girls, whether the iconic group deserve to become Dames, and if King Charles could be waiting for the perfect moment.

She also opens up about her emotional bond with the Spice Girls, what her daughter Scarlett thinks about a reunion, her brand-new music, overcoming sexism in the early days of her career, and the artists she turns to when she wants to feel good.

00:00She's quietly proud of her mum. She'd quite like the Spice Girls to go back on
00:04tour. Who wouldn't? It's hard to get the Damehood as it is to get the Spice Girls
00:08back on stage. Maybe that's what it takes. Maybe the King is waiting for us to get
00:11our asses back on stage. What a time to be alive! Football, music, it's just... I've never
00:16wanted to end. I know, what a summer, eh? Are you tired like the rest of the country?
00:22I'm exhausted. I mean, yeah, I've had a big, big year. It's been an incredible year.
00:26It's been so busy, and I think I'm kind of living on adrenaline, but I'm loving it.
00:31I'm here for it. And the music you're creating is so mouthy. It's amazing. You must be enjoying yourself.
00:35Honestly, I think the way the record sounds is exactly how I've been feeling for the
00:40last few years, and I just wanted to kind of get it all on there. So, yeah, it's really
00:45exciting times for me. Out on tour at the end of the year, playing Brixton Academy for
00:48the first time. So, yeah, I couldn't be happier. And then yesterday, your Instagram
00:52must have popped off, because 30 years, couldn't you? Did it creep up on you? Did you realise?
00:56Like, do you girls talk about it? What actually happened yesterday? Was it a special day?
00:59Yeah. It was a very special day, and we'd all been in touch. We'd not seen each other
01:03for a little while, and we were sending each other very gushy messages. And then I was
01:07lucky enough to work with Emma yesterday. We did a radio show together. And I think for
01:11all of us, we were surprised how emotional it was, because when we have these milestones,
01:16you think back to that time, you really reminisce, don't you, and reflect. And we were just
01:21five girls with a massive dream, so much ambition, and a lot of naivety. And we did everything
01:27we wanted to do. And it's enabled us to go on. You know, I'm here tonight picking up
01:31an award. And it's enabled me to continue doing the work that I love, and travelling
01:35around the world. So I'm so grateful. I've never asked you before, what does Scarlet
01:38think of all this? Is she a big fan of yours? She is, she's quietly proud of her mum.
01:44She'd quite like the Spice Girls to go back on tour. Who wouldn't? But no, I think she
01:49is very proud of me. But she can't let it show too much.
01:52Yeah, but you're the coolest man ever since. I mean, look at your arse.
01:54Well, if I see her later, you tell her that, yeah?
01:56We've already got one lady out of the five of you. When are we going to get dame?
02:00What are we going to do to do this? I know, right? I know. I don't know. I think it's
02:07as hard to get the damehood as it is to get the Spice Girls back on stage. Maybe that's
02:10what it takes. Maybe the king is waiting for us to get our asses back on stage.
02:14But we are ticking off things. We've got Spice Girls streaming soon. Yes.
02:17Richard is here tonight. You can have a little chat with him. You might see him all the time.
02:21Did you make that happen? Yes. Yes! And also, I've heard you talk about business and who
02:27owns what rights and things. It's so important to talk about money and to really stand up
02:31for ourselves. Yes. You've done so much for women and you're still going. How does that feel
02:35that you're making that discussion so public? Oh, you know what? It feels like when we were
02:39young, we didn't realise how important it was. You know, we encountered sexism really
02:45early in the music industry, in our experiences. And that made us want to be a girl band for
02:49girls. So we started screaming about girl power. And that's just, it's really enabled us
02:55to keep speaking to people, to generations. And I think now we're older and we fully understand
02:59that responsibility. We just want to keep doing it.
03:01And who would you love to listen to that makes you feel emotional? It's all about therapy
03:06and music. What makes you feel good? Oh my gosh. Well, I, you know, I've been DJing for
03:11eight years. So I'm all about house music. I mean, it's just the euphoria of being on a
03:15dance floor with all of these people unified in the joy is, yeah, that's everything to me.
03:20But Calvin Harris, yeah. Oh, yeah. You make us so happy. Thank you very much indeed.
03:25Thank you. And get it to happen. I know. Have a word. Have a word.
03:30Thank you. Thank you.
