Jomboy Media and NFL Network's Chris Rose defends Giants' RHP Logan Webb following fan, media criticism
Transcript
00:00Great question.
00:00That's a great question.
00:01That's a great question.
00:02And that's a great question.
00:05On 95.7 The Game.
00:07Welcome back.
00:08It's Willard and Dibs, although no Willard today.
00:10So Dibs and Grandy with you on a Thursday here on 95.7 The Game.
00:15We're talking out the Giants and Logan Webb.
00:17He got roughed up in the first inning yesterday versus the Blue Jays.
00:21Gave up five runs in the first.
00:23Then was stellar through the seventh inning.
00:25Gave up just those five runs in the seven innings pitch.
00:28But after the game took to social media, took to Twitter and fired back at some media members,
00:34some fans about his performance, about the season.
00:40And it just reeks of a player who's not feeling great about his team, where he's at,
00:45and everything else going on.
00:47That has been the conversation.
00:47And with the trade deadline now less than a month away, August 3rd,
00:52we've been discussing the possibility of the Giants moving on from Logan Webb.
00:55To talk about that and to talk about a whole lot more,
00:58we welcome on the River Islands guest line, Chris Rose of John Boy Media.
01:04You know the podcast, Chris Rose Sports, Baseball Today with Trevor Plouffe,
01:08plus Dugout Discussions, every episode, a great podcast.
01:13Don't sleep on BattleBots either.
01:14No BattleBots.
01:15Never leave BattleBots out.
01:16Plus, you know Chris Rose, of course, from NFL Network, previously MLB Network.
01:21We love Chris Rose here at 95.7 The Game, and we are looking forward to chatting with him right
01:26now here on 95.7 The Game.
01:28Chris, we appreciate your time.
01:29How are you doing?
01:31Doing great, guys.
01:32Thanks for having me.
01:32I always appreciate it.
01:33Of course.
01:34We're talking a lot about Logan Webb.
01:36I imagine you saw what happened on Twitter yesterday after a rough first inning,
01:41but a good innings two through seven he took to social media to defend himself against some complaints,
01:48against some frustrations from the fan base, even from some media members.
01:52In your experience, when a player is taken to social media to defend himself,
01:56what does that say about where that player is at mentally?
02:01I think he had a bad day.
02:02I mean, welcome to being human.
02:05Logan Webb has been a pretty stand-up guy since he arrived in San Francisco.
02:12What was his first year?
02:132019, I think?
02:15Yes.
02:17I think he had a bad day, and I consider myself a friend of Logan's.
02:22He was a member of the Chris Rose rotation for a couple of years before we changed the show to
02:27dugout discussions.
02:28I'm sure I'll see him in Philadelphia.
02:31What I would say to him is, hey, listen, the smartest thing you did yesterday was deactivate your social media.
02:39Or if you're interested in increasing your brand, which a lot of athletes should, I'd have somebody else manage it,
02:47and you just stay off of it because it just doesn't help anybody.
02:51I think that probably if you were to ask Logan today, and I don't want to speak for him,
02:55but I would assume that he would say, yeah, this wasn't my best day.
02:59I had a bad day, and I was frustrated, and I've been frustrated with the season, and I shouldn't have
03:05fired back.
03:06And he might have those feelings about particular media members.
03:10I do know that Logan has been voted at least once, like the most accessible giant and easy to deal
03:18with.
03:18He is always in front of his locker that I can tell.
03:22Now, I don't cover the Giants on a daily basis, but I do see who stands in front of their
03:26locker.
03:26And every time, even in time where he gets his brains beat in on the mound, he is there.
03:32He is answering questions, and he doesn't run from things.
03:36So, like I said, the next time we hear from him, it wouldn't surprise me if he says, I had
03:40a really bad day.
03:41I'm kind of embarrassed by what I put out there, and that's that.
03:44And then you move on.
03:45I don't think that this should be the centerpiece of what has been a horrific first half of the Giants.
03:50It's not the centerpiece, but it is another piece.
03:53And, Chris, you mentioned that about Logan.
03:55Like, he's always been so stand-up, and he's wore it when he has to wear it and all the
03:59rest of it.
03:59And so, from the outside looking in, you look at this giant situation, and Logan Webb did what he did
04:05on social media.
04:06Do you see this as kind of a broken thing right now here?
04:10No, I think that, like I said, I almost think you have to treat this as a one-off.
04:15This isn't a guy who, I mean, this is the first misstep that I can tell.
04:20Now, you know, I don't, once again, I don't cover the Giants on a daily basis.
04:25They're one of 30 to me.
04:27They're an interesting one of 30 this year.
04:29But, yeah, I mean, it's easy to group it all together.
04:32When we have Tony Vitello trying to make history as the first manager ever to go from college ball to
04:39pro ball with zero pro ball experience whatsoever.
04:42Raphael Devers on several fronts.
04:45Willie Adamas not performing.
04:46Matt Chapman and Casey Schmidt getting into it in the middle of a diamond, which wasn't a big deal.
04:50Like, that sort of stuff happens every year with teams.
04:54It just, once again, it's another tentacle on this octopus of a season.
04:58So, I understand why people are interested.
05:03I understand why people are like, oh, that's it.
05:05It's all falling apart.
05:06To me, the biggest issue with the Giants is this.
05:09Is, do you trust Buster Posey?
05:11Because there are plenty of teams this year throughout baseball that thought they were going to be significantly better than
05:17what they are.
05:18The Tigers, the Blue Jays, the Orioles, the Padres, the Mets.
05:25We can keep going on and on.
05:27These are teams, in some cases, that spent a ton of money, and it has not gone right.
05:32So, how do you fix it?
05:34Is there a quick fix this year?
05:35For the Giants, obviously, the answer is no.
05:37So, how do we take that next step so that Buster Posey looks like he knows what he's doing?
05:43Chris, I know you're friends with Logan, and I don't want you to put words in his mouth, as you
05:48said earlier.
05:48But if you were to try to put yourself in Logan's shoes and think about what his career has been
05:53with the Giants,
05:54and it's been a phenomenal career, one of the best pitchers in baseball consistently, year in and year out,
06:00consistently gets Cy Young votes.
06:01Yet the team is hovering around .500 every year.
06:04But 2021, when they won 107 games, won the division, took the Dodgers down to a decisive game five in
06:12that series.
06:13This year, of course, they've bottomed out, and they're 16 below .500.
06:17But I think about what I would feel if I was Logan Webb, knowing what I've meant to this franchise.
06:22I would feel incredibly frustrated about everything going on around me, maybe to the point where I'd consider,
06:28maybe I want to go somewhere else.
06:31Do you think that has crossed his mind at all, that maybe his future is somewhere other than San Francisco?
06:37Not going to answer.
06:38That's not fair.
06:39I don't know Logan's situation.
06:42I know that he's got a wife and a young daughter.
06:45And for people that think it's easy for us as fans and as media members to just sit there
06:51and look at it in a tiny little three-hour-a-day box from 7 to 10 every night or
06:56whenever first pitch is, right?
06:58That's what we see, and that's what we think the life is.
07:00Well, that's not it, man.
07:01It's just not.
07:02He might love exactly where he lives.
07:06His daughter might already have some friends in the neighborhood.
07:09Like, we just don't know.
07:11So for us to sit there and say, man, he is really frustrated.
07:15He can't be happy.
07:17Do you think he's going to go up to Buster Posey and ask for a trade?
07:20A, I'm not going to do that because that's not fair of me to put myself in his shoes because
07:27I don't know.
07:28Just like I don't know your guys' life, what's going on, and you don't know what's going on in my
07:33life.
07:33As a competitor, who the hell wants to be 15 games under .500 at the break?
07:39Nobody.
07:41But you will never hear me say, oh, that guy's got to ask for a trade.
07:45He's an idiot if he's going to stay in that situation.
07:48Look at the stuff we do with Mike Trout.
07:50Mike Trout could probably go into John Mosaloc's office right now and say, hey, listen, I can't do this anymore,
07:58bro.
07:58I know I'm making a ton of money.
08:00I know I'm living in Southern California.
08:02Like, I got a great $426 million contract.
08:05Get me out.
08:06And so we all say, why doesn't he do it?
08:10Maybe he's happy.
08:11Yeah.
08:12Maybe he's happy.
08:13And so maybe Logan is just saying, I've been through too much you-know-what to walk out at this
08:20point.
08:20That's not who I am, and I want to see this thing through.
08:22And I believe in Tony Vitello, I believe in Buster Posey, and we'll get this thing turned around, hopefully starting
08:28in the second half to take us through 2027.
08:31Yeah, a little bit like Andy Dufresne as far as how much blank that Logan Webb has had to crawl
08:37through.
08:37So let me ask you in a different way, Chris, not in terms of Logan's intentions, but the league in
08:43general.
08:43If Logan was available to be traded for, how much demand do you think there'd be?
08:50Tremendous amount.
08:50I don't think there's going to be that many teams that – first of all, I love active trade deadlines.
08:58I love trades more than I like – I like trades more than I like the free agency period in
09:06the offseason.
09:07I just do, because when something affects multiple teams on many levels, it's great for the game.
09:12And I'm afraid that there aren't going to be enough dudes moving before August 3rd.
09:18But Logan Webb is fascinating because he is a guy that gives you innings.
09:22I mean, just look at yesterday.
09:23Gives up the grand slam, gives up five in the first, and still goes seven.
09:27There's not that many guys that are going to do that.
09:29Where he stayed in the game mentally, like it sucks he gave up five runs.
09:34And people – I saw people on social media going, unfortunately, my algorithm – I've covered so much giant stuff
09:41this year.
09:42It is filled.
09:43It is inundated with giant stuff.
09:45And most of it, 99% of it is negative.
09:48So the number of fans yesterday was like, well, that guy sucks.
09:51He's not an ace and all that sort of – come on, folks.
09:54He's not Jacob Mizorowski, right?
09:57I get that.
09:58But what he is is a guy that you can basically say he's going to give us at least six,
10:03probably seven, always keep us in the game, and battle his ass off and be there for us.
10:09That goes a long way in this sport.
10:12And for a guy who's making whatever it is, $18 million a year, sign me up.
10:16So there would be a lot of people, I think, that want that.
10:18Yeah, it would be $23 million next year and $24 million the following year for Logan Webb.
10:24So you're right.
10:24It's pretty affordable as well for a pitcher of his caliber.
10:28So there would be demand for him, and this would be a seller's market.
10:31What do you think the return could potentially be?
10:33I know I'm asking him to theorize, but are we talking about top 100 prospect kind of player in return
10:38for that kind of player?
10:40Do you think that's fair on the table?
10:42Yeah, I mean, I would think so.
10:43Totally.
10:44I mean, you're getting the rest of this year and whatever we'll have next year.
10:48And then the year after that, for a guy who, until this season, has been really healthy?
10:52Yeah.
10:53I mean, yes.
10:54And that's – look, the Giants need plenty of help right now.
10:59And this has been – I'm not going to say shocking, but really disappointing on many levels
11:04that the veteran guys just haven't gotten it done well enough here.
11:09And it's been – I don't think you can judge Tony Bitello because I know that question's coming.
11:16It's been a nightmare, man.
11:17I can't even watch him most nights.
11:19That's how bad it is.
11:20And I love watching late-night baseball.
11:22I will – I'll watch virtually any team.
11:25Oh, I can't watch the Angels.
11:26I can't watch the Rockies.
11:28So sometimes the Giants are my first pick, depending on who's playing late-night.
11:31Right.
11:32Because I'm flipping around.
11:33Yeah, we can't watch either, but we have to because it's our job.
11:37So at least you're able to pick and choose and like, oh, yeah, you know, I'll watch tonight or not.
11:42Chris Rose here on 95.7 The Game.
11:44I'm wondering if the Giants aren't in a great spot based on the American League because it seems like almost
11:49everybody outside of the aforementioned, you know, Royals and Angels, it feels like everybody thinks that there may be one
11:56player away.
11:57Does that help the Giants as a seller in this market where the American League is full of mediocrity?
12:03I don't think most people think they're one player away.
12:06I think they feel like they're one player away from giving themselves a decent chance.
12:11You know, I don't think there's like a finishing piece out there except for Scooble, and that's only for a
12:16couple of teams in my opinion.
12:18But I would like to see some GMs out there take a step forward and say, you know what, I
12:23am going to call Buster Posey.
12:25Like, I would go after Logan Webb.
12:26Like, it's hilarious that I see all these reports over the last few weeks.
12:30Yes, the Giants are open for business.
12:32They are willing to talk about Willie Adama's Raphael Devers.
12:36I'm like, huh?
12:39Who wants a guy who's got a $300 million contract and it's been up and down emotionally now in two
12:46cities?
12:48I mean, unless you're going to pay part of the bill, nobody's lining up for that.
12:52Now, he has played better over the last three to four weeks.
12:54He really has.
12:56And in my opinion, when he is right, when everything is right,
13:00he's one of the top ten most dangerous hitters in the sport.
13:04So, I get that.
13:05But, I mean, like, yeah, to me, Logan Webb's the most valuable piece.
13:10Yeah, absolutely.
13:11We agree as well.
13:12Chris Rose with us here on Willard and Dibs,
13:14and you're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ-FM in HD1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station
13:19and the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries, always live on the free Odyssey app,
13:24coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
13:26Chris, the way that we've been talking about it is there's the obvious trade candidates,
13:30which are Robbie Ray and Luis Sirize.
13:32They're obvious because they're on the last year of their deals.
13:35And then you have the ones where it seems like the Giants would be okay getting off of them,
13:40but it will be harder to move because of their contracts.
13:42That's Devers and Adamas, as you mentioned.
13:46You can maybe even include Chapman in there, although he's probably easier to move than those other two.
13:51And then you have Logan Webb that we've been talking about,
13:53which seems unlikely because Buster Posey has said they're not interested in dealing Logan Webb.
13:58There are a couple of others, though, that are interesting and I would imagine have some value
14:02because they've got team control.
14:04It's Jung-Hoo Lee and Elliot Ramos.
14:07What is the league-wide opinion on those two guys?
14:10And if they decide to be open to moving them,
14:12what do you think they could get in return for those guys?
14:17That's a tougher one.
14:23Lee's got a $100 million contract for a guy.
14:27You know, he's had it.
14:29I'll admit, I haven't checked his stats the last two weeks.
14:32So how has he been the last two weeks?
14:34Cooled off a little bit.
14:35He was unbelievably hot for about seven weeks.
14:39Yes.
14:39Yes, he was.
14:40He was smoking.
14:40So I like him.
14:41I like his arms great.
14:47I don't know what you got, what you get for him.
14:50Did he sign a seven-year deal when he came over here?
14:53Is that what it was?
14:53I don't think it was.
14:54Six or seven?
14:54I think it was six, yep.
14:55Yeah.
14:56Okay.
14:57So this is year two, right?
14:58Or three?
14:59Year three.
15:00Year three?
15:012026, Chris.
15:02Yeah.
15:03You and I are no longer spring chickens.
15:05I know.
15:05He hasn't opt-out after 2028.
15:08Yeah.
15:09And Ramos is interesting.
15:10I always expect a little bit more out of him.
15:14I just really do.
15:15Look, there's not a lot of right-handed pop on the market.
15:18So maybe, maybe you could get something interesting for him.
15:22There's just not going to be a lot of right-handed hitters.
15:25And, you know, a team like Milwaukee is starving for right-handed pop.
15:30And, you know, they feel like they're pretty close to where I personally think they need
15:35another starting pitcher.
15:36Like, I'd call and say, hey, give me Logan Webb and Elio Ramos.
15:40And let's see what we can do.
15:41We've got plenty of young guys here in this system, which they do.
15:45Yeah.
15:45And Robbie Ray is another pitcher that the Giants might look to move.
15:49But I just.
15:49You're not going to get.
15:51You're not going to get much for him.
15:52I get that.
15:53A rental, certainly.
15:55But if you're a team that needs, you know, a number four, number five starter, I don't
15:58know, or a lefty out of the pen.
16:00I wonder what your perspective is on Tony Vitello from a distance as far as he got put
16:06into a really tough spot and it hasn't gone very well.
16:11No, it has not.
16:13So I interviewed him within the first six to eight weeks of the season on Dugout Discussions
16:18and I loved it.
16:19I loved it.
16:20I mean, obviously, he's super entertaining for us.
16:25Like I said, I think it's impossible to judge him this year.
16:28I think there's just been too much stuff that has gone on.
16:30And some people say, well, isn't that the manager's job is to corral all the stuff that
16:34goes on?
16:35Yes, to some degree.
16:36The most important work a manager does outside of, hey, which reliever should I go get is
16:45what happens behind the scenes.
16:47We're not privy to it.
16:48That's why I'd laugh when people say, well, that guy's not a leader or that guy's our leader.
16:53Y'all don't know.
16:55None of us know.
16:56And until you get back there and you start doing your intel and talking to people who are
17:01in that room, you don't know who the leaders are, you don't know what they think of the
17:05manager, you can sit there and guess all you want.
17:08Like we can all guess.
17:09Now, did I do a little research?
17:11Yes.
17:12What I can tell you is there's a lot of players that liked him when I talked to him.
17:17Now, that was the first Dodger series in L.A.
17:19So that was May at some point.
17:21I don't know if that has changed since then.
17:23But those guys were all on board with him.
17:26They believe who he is.
17:28Could he could he alter a few things?
17:33Absolutely.
17:35But, you know, Yankee fans get pissed off at Aaron Boone for what he says in front of
17:40a microphone all the time, because you know what he doesn't do?
17:43He doesn't throw his players under the bus.
17:44I have no idea what he's telling Anthony Volpe behind closed doors.
17:48No idea.
17:49So that's what matters most, in my opinion, when it comes to a manager.
17:54It's not what he says.
17:55Oh, that guy's not tough enough.
17:57How do we know?
17:58We don't know.
18:00Chris Rose with us here on Willard and Dibs.
18:03It's Dibs and Grandy with you, Chris.
18:05Similar to the Vitello conversation, you brought up Buster Posey.
18:09And the question that you asked was, do you trust Buster Posey to make the right decisions
18:13to help bring the Giants out of this?
18:14Is it possible for a front office, for a coaching staff to go through a season like this and
18:20remain intact?
18:21We've been operating under the assumption that Buster Posey's got plenty of room to work
18:24with because he's a franchise legend and you don't hire an inexperienced manager and move
18:29on after just one year.
18:30Would you be shocked if Posey, Manazian, Vitello are all back again next year?
18:35Or does something have to happen because this season has been that bad?
18:38Well, how much experience did Buster Posey have when they hired him?
18:42Fair point.
18:44Zero?
18:45Yep.
18:46No, he sat in on meetings and stuff like that.
18:49And he started to understand, I'm sure, some of the behind the scenes stuff.
18:52It's different, though, when you're like consultant or whatever it was or running the show.
18:58That's a big difference.
18:59The minute he got hired and I always look, I have a I have an affinity for Buster on several
19:05fronts, right?
19:06Like I was the guy working the Fox Saturday Baseball when they won the their first ring
19:12in San Francisco.
19:13I actually called his first hit at Dodger Stadium.
19:16There was like so I'm linked with him.
19:19He probably doesn't remember that or care to know.
19:21But it's important to me.
19:24The thing is, is that the minute he was hired, I said, look.
19:28In the last 50 years, how many more popular giants are there than Buster Posey?
19:33Man, it is.
19:35It's a short list, Chris.
19:37I mean, we're talking one hand and it's probably less than that.
19:41You know, we're talking about fingers.
19:44Right.
19:44Not a full hand number.
19:47So I said, really, unless he wins a World Series, people are going to bitch and moan
19:54about every move that he makes.
19:55And it hasn't been good.
19:57It hasn't been good.
19:58And I like for me, I didn't understand the day that he had the press conference when
20:04he wouldn't talk about Pride Night.
20:05I don't know why he did it that day.
20:08It just if he's just going to read a statement and then not answer any questions.
20:12I thought that was kind of weird.
20:14So I think there's been a lot that's been off with a organization that has when it was
20:18going great.
20:20Was really like on point with a lot of stuff.
20:23Right.
20:23A little off point now and just from off point to off topic, I need to ask you, how
20:28devastated will you be when LeBron James decides he wants to be a Golden State Warriors
20:34and not a Cavs again?
20:38I am not refreshing my Twitter feed the way I was in 2014.
20:42Let's just put it that way.
20:43I got friends back there that are texting me.
20:45We think this is going to be the day.
20:47I was like, just let me know.
20:48Look, I love LeBron.
20:50It's the only championship that I have experienced in five and a half decades as a Cleveland sports
20:54fan.
20:56Would it bother me that he went to a team to beat us four times?
21:00I mean, it wouldn't bother me because you can go do whatever you want.
21:02I'm not here to tell you what to do.
21:04It just would be weird.
21:05Like, I don't know.
21:07It just would be very strange.
21:09But if that's what he wants to do and he wants to go play with Steph and, you know, Draymond
21:14is back there and they have a good old time together.
21:17Cool.
21:18Go live it up.
21:19It's fine.
21:20Well, we are refreshing our Twitter feeds like it is 2014 because that's all that we have
21:26to go for right now as Warrior fans.
21:28Chris, we appreciate your time so much.
21:30Always great to catch up with you and we'll do it again sometime.
21:34Thanks, guys.
21:34I appreciate it.
21:35Take care.
21:36All right.
21:36You too.
21:36That's Chris Rose of John Boy Media.
21:38You know the podcast, Chris Rose Sports Baseball Today with Trevor Plouffe, plus dugout discussions.
21:44You hear Logan Webb on there.
21:46You have in the past.
21:47You hear Tony Vitello, as he mentioned.
21:50Chris Rose, Mr. Cleveland himself talking about all things Giants.
21:53And one title in his five decades plus of life.
21:57He's basically 55 and the Browns got close a couple times in the 80s and the Cavs got
22:02the one and the Guardians were right there against the Marlins and extra innings and
22:07the Cubs game seven in 2016.
22:09No doubt.
22:10A couple of near misses.
22:12So, yeah, I guess, you know, he's not refreshing like he used to, but he may wind up with LeBron
22:17again for the third time.
22:19Yeah.
22:20About all the trade stuff.
22:21I mean, Logan Webb will get you a haul.
22:23He said a top 100 prospect, which is a big deal, but it seemed like everybody else that
22:29could potentially be traded, even the ones where it's less likely like Jung Hoo Lee and
22:33Elliot Ramos.
22:34He's not sold that you're getting much for those guys, even with years left on their
22:36contract.
22:37Right.
22:37And I mean, Ramos, you have team control and he mentioned Milwaukee is a team that's
22:41pretty hungry for a right hand power bat.
22:44So that might change.
22:45And I do think it's interesting when you look at the American League and you've got
22:4813 of the 15 still fancy themselves in the race, in the wildcard race.
22:54And so if it stays very tight and compact, maybe at that point, teams are willing to give
23:00more than what you would think now.
23:01Yeah.
23:02We can react to that.
23:03We got more time for your calls and your text.
23:05888-957-9570 and we will give you the latest on LeBron and what it means and what the Warriors
23:14should do.
23:14When I say the latest, I don't really think much has changed, but we'll talk about it.
23:19That's how a lot of us feel about this whole conversation.
23:22We'll do that.
