00:00It's Benzinga, bringing Wall Street to Main Street.
00:02The head of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
00:05told self-driving car companies to quickly address what he called
00:09a clear pattern of driverless vehicles interfering with law enforcement and first responders,
00:14according to Reuters.
00:16Jonathan Morrison said,
00:17NHTSA has documented multiple cases of autonomous vehicles driving into active emergency scenes,
00:23blocking ambulances and firefighters,
00:25and failing to respond to flashing lights, flares, smoke, fire, and traffic cones.
00:31Morrison said an autonomous vehicle that cannot detect and respond to emergency scenes
00:36represents a functional insufficiency.
00:38The agency will meet with vehicle developers by the end of the month to discuss solutions.
00:43The agency did not name the companies that received the letter.
