A California man has been sentenced after admitting to stealing a rare 17th-century Chinese manuscript from the UCLA Library through an elaborate scheme. Investigators said Jeffrey Ying used fake identities to obtain library cards, borrowed valuable historical works, and returned convincing counterfeit copies instead of the originals. Authorities later discovered forged materials and equipment believed to have been used to create the replicas. Prosecutors estimated that rare Chinese manuscripts worth around $216,000 were targeted during the operation. Ying received a sentence of time served, one year of home confinement, and three years of supervised release, while restitution will be decided later.
