00:10these neighbors lived out in the middle of nowhere and one evening they're sitting around
00:15the fire talking about where they've been what they've done but then they start talking about
00:20a missing person that they murdered and dismembered in her bathtub a dismemberment death is just
00:28horrific incredibly brutal and barbaric there had been some building tension between her and them
00:39we end up finding out that name is apparently a name that she uses as an alias she would write
00:47bad checks he's kind of a rambling man he'd been around the country a lot he's assaulted people
00:54we contacted the u.s marshals in an attempt to have them locate these two individuals they start
01:00checking every license plate that's been run every stop that's been made i was concerned that maybe
01:07we're not going to find them they live that crazy life of violence and thieving and lying and that
01:15was their world when you got finger pointing back and forth the truth is probably in the middle
01:21somewhere between the two of them you had the perfect storm she didn't deserve it
01:49december 22nd 2015 mansfield ohio as families gather for the holidays
01:58one household calls 911 when they become concerned for a family member the mansfield police department
02:06received a call that patsy hudson was missing her sister had contacted law enforcement the sister
02:14reported that she hasn't seen or heard from her sister patsy in five or six months patsy was pretty
02:21reclusive and she was somebody who liked her privacy so they didn't think a lot about the fact that they
02:28weren't seeing her but now her family was very concerned about her whereabouts so officers do a wellness check
02:43her house when you approached it you could see there was a pile of newspapers by the front door
02:48the mailbox was full the yard the grass was fairly tall it was clear that someone had not been in
02:57the
02:57home for a substantial period of time but her motor vehicle was still in the driveway police knocked on
03:04the door and nobody was there didn't answer the door at the time but the window was unlocked they got
03:11into
03:11the house through the window checked around the house there was nothing alarming that would make
03:19you think that something happened there the tv was still on her phone was there but she wasn't there
03:27just like she walked out the door and didn't come back there was plenty of evidence of cats both in
03:34her
03:35garage and on her back porch and in the house but never any cats in sight which was odd so
03:43then obviously
03:43after that you're going to check with friends and family the sister lives as a crow flies really about a
03:51mile away and that's where we talk to the sister and the son so i asked her well you live
03:59a mile away from
03:59your sister and you haven't seen her or talked to her in six months isn't that kind of strange and
04:07she
04:07explained that patsy was kind of a loner and if she didn't want to talk to you she didn't talk
04:12to you
04:13patsy's son was an over-the-road trucker and had stopped in to check on her from time to time
04:20and the last time that he recalled seeing her was in july of 2015.
04:26he initially told us that you know he didn't talk to his mom much if she was in a bad
04:34mood or she
04:35was involved in something inside her house she oftentimes wouldn't answer the door when her son
04:40came by but he became concerned when his aunt started calling saying she had not heard from her
04:49and something had to be going on once they realized she's not getting back in contact with them
04:56that was when the alarms and the flags started flying we were wondering if maybe she just went
05:03somewhere on vacation left didn't want to be seen but the family told us that you know this is not
05:09the
05:09normal for her she she doesn't go places she didn't have a lot of friends she didn't go out and
05:16socialize
05:17the family had no suggestions where she might have gone so whenever we look at
05:23any type of missing report we go to the back history
05:31investigators learned that 62 year old patsy hudson was born and raised in ohio
05:37she was from mansfield patsy was well liked by everybody very well liked as a young woman patsy
05:46got married and gave birth to her son lonnie we learned the person that she was originally married
05:52to had died and that she was remarried at one point and then divorced we found out that she worked
06:00at a
06:01mexican restaurant patsy started working for us as a waitress she was very easy going very nice to deal
06:09with always good worker always a great person patsy did not know her customers as a jen john joe honey
06:19hi honey always with a laugh on her face patsy was fun a lot of fun
06:27after decades of working on her feet patsy was forced to retire after suffering a series of strokes
06:33in her mid-50s she was on social security she had a direct deposit social security into her account
06:41that's what she was living off of she was kind of you know kind of a hermit
06:46patsy was not the people that goes out and socialize a lot she kept herself
06:53by herself a couple of times came to the restaurant to have a drink but that was about it
07:01to occupy her time patsy began caring for dozens of local cats patsy had a lot of cats and she
07:12was
07:12very devoted to her cats she had both indoor and outdoor cats and would feed them regularly she was
07:21somebody that got along with everybody didn't bother people and there was no reason to suspect
07:28that anybody in her world her family or friends would have harmed her in any way
07:37but now no one has heard from patsy in months and her family has no clue where she could be
07:45so one of the first things you check is if she may have been transported to the local hospital
07:51but we couldn't find anything like she was not at a hospital
07:56when detectives look patsy up in their records they discover she filed a police report against her
08:03neighbor walter wrens six months prior on july 4th 2015. she reported that she believed that her neighbor
08:13was poisoning her cats so she had it scheduled to go see a vet but she didn't show up for
08:20the appointment
08:21there initially when the report was made about the poisoning of the cats no one thought a lot about
08:28it but now dad had started ringing alarm bells she had a lot of cats and it was really strange
08:35from day
08:36one when we were there we never saw any cats at all so obviously that made us think did somebody
08:45else
08:45do something with these cats coming up patsy's neighbors share troubling details about the last time
08:57anyone saw her they were physically out in the front yards arguing and new rumors emerge about patsy's
09:06personal life the plan was that her and patsy were going to take off together do we have a
09:12love triangle thing going on maybe she took off with this one and this one got jilted
09:29detectives in mansfield ohio are searching for 62 year old retiree patsy hudson who hasn't been seen
09:37in six months they learned patsy had called police about her next door neighbor 53 year old walter wrens
09:45shortly before vanishing in july 2015 walter and his girlfriend kara rented the house next door
09:54to patsy's house patsy got into that dispute with her neighbors and there was suspicion that one of
10:02them had poisoned a cat we did canvas the neighborhood and that's when we find that those two neighbors were
10:09gone also but they hadn't been reported missing they just were not there so it was decided that
10:18everybody would start going door to door talking to neighbors trying to gather information one neighbor
10:25directly beside her he mentioned she had a lot of cats but we haven't seen the cats since about
10:33beginning of july right about the time we have not seen her several neighbors mentioned that no one
10:41knew where the cats had gone and patsy was gone it just appeared that she just had left neighbors
10:49confirmed that patsy had been feuding with the couple next door the neighbors did report that they would see
10:57walter and kara going over to patsy's house it seemed like that was one of the few people in the
11:03neighborhood
11:04like she was social with they would take her to the grocery store and take her around places befriended her
11:13but then they had noticed that there had been some building tension between patsy and them
11:23apparently something had happened that that went south real quick because they were physically out in
11:31the front yards arguing in july they could hear screaming and yelling between patsy and the neighbors next
11:40door so it was clear that there was some ongoing dispute between them that's when neighbors relay some
11:47unexpected information the topic did come up at some point that maybe care was a little bit jealous of
11:56patsy because maybe she thought walter was spending a little too much time over there
12:02kara was indicating she was upset that they may be developing some sort of a relationship
12:11while no one can confirm the rumor another set of neighbors say they believe patsy's differences
12:17with walter and kara had been settled by mid-july apparently patsy had said that they were going
12:24to go on a trip to florida and that's about the time the two neighbors moved out disappeared haven't
12:29been seen again all we knew is there was three people one in particular missing from the street and two
12:36others that vanished about the same time so we started getting curious about like okay do we have a
12:44love triangle thing going on we thought maybe someone got mad at someone else and maybe she took off with
12:50this one and this one got jilted it is oftentimes in those sort of circumstances where you see
12:57violence arise because of that jealousy that anger we heard a couple different stories from neighbors one
13:06in particular said that kara and walter said that they were going to be taking patsy to her sister's house
13:11in florida and when we mentioned that to the other sister that lived here she said there's no way
13:19that would happen she wouldn't just go to florida without her knowing about it
13:26so mansfield police reached out to patsy's sister in florida and she denied that patsy
13:34was planning to come there and was unaware of where patsy was
13:41with few leads detectives turned to patsy's financial records for clues and that's when through
13:48a subpoena i found that patsy's direct deposit was still being deposited and that her debit card
13:55was still active and was still being used the feeling was hopefully if she's alive and well
14:00you know we're going to find her
14:03so we have a wonderful tech lady and she actually sets a map up for us and we start plotting
14:10every spot where these are being used and we see that it's being used in other states
14:17this was going from you know midwest in the area like kansas start going down into the areas like
14:24mississippi west virginia tennessee so then we thought maybe they changed their mind maybe they
14:29didn't go to florida maybe they went on a trip but when you talk to the family is there any
14:35reason
14:36why patsy would be in montana or in texas or in arkansas and all the places in between and we
14:43were
14:43told no she wouldn't know anybody there she wouldn't have any reason to be there patsy wouldn't do
14:49this you know this is not patsy so now the search is on to find these neighbors
15:11detectives in mansfield ohio are searching for patsy hudson when they discover evidence that the 62
15:17year old may have left town with her next door neighbors walter and kara we didn't know if they
15:24had anything really to do with her disappearance but we wanted to talk to him simply to ask where
15:29did your neighbor go she left the same time you left what do you know about that so i found
15:34that
15:34the house next door to patsy's house was a rental and i found the gentleman's that owned it and i
15:40went
15:40to talk to him he said his cousin walter showed up into town uh wanted to move in get a
15:50job settle down
15:51so he rented the house to walter and his girlfriend cara
15:58according to his cousin 53 year old walter wrens was born and raised in ohio
16:05walter grew up in a very crazy family relationship he was known to people to be in trouble a lot
16:13and
16:14had a very troubled childhood as an adult his cousin says walter was a bit of a drifter walter's kind
16:25of
16:25a rambling man also he'd been around the country a lot done a lot of different things he said well
16:32you know he's assaulted people and stuff before but he was never convicted he was never sent to prison for
16:39any of that his cousin really couldn't give us any idea where to look for him because he's just out
16:45in
16:45the wind detectives learned that walter had begun a relationship with cara in 2013 and the couple had
16:54recently settled in mansfield we found that they had moved in april ish and just walked away and left
17:02end of july so he gives us permission to search the house without receiving a search warrant so we start
17:10seeing if there's anything out of place if there's blood if there's any signs that something foul has
17:19happened but we found things how they should be there was still mail here that they left when they
17:27disappeared we took it from the house simply because there really wasn't anything else to take
17:36before detectives leave the rental walter's cousin shares critical information about a van that he
17:43bought walter we got the license plate from the cousin when he bought the van he bought it from a
17:49neighbor because walter complained that he had no way to get to work and he put the van in walter's
17:54name
17:57we run that license plate and walter's information and that led us to greenfield indiana which is only
18:03four hours away records show walter's van had been stopped on october 29 2015.
18:13greenfield indiana had stopped the same van that the cousin had described
18:18with the license plate on it with walter and kara in the van certainly we had that hope that patsy
18:27hudson was with them but there was nobody else in the van at that time greenfield police thought that
18:34maybe kara was being held against her will but when they stopped her and walter she denied all of that
18:41so they let them go
18:47kara's daughter is the one that had called the greenfield police department
18:50she said walter and her mom had showed up at her house
18:54and in her words they were acting weird so they stayed a couple days and when they left
19:01her mom made some comment about maybe she didn't want to go with walter
19:06so the daughter called greenfield pd that's when detectives receive a crucial lead from kara's daughter
19:15the information we got from that was we got kara's real name which was linda buckner
19:22so when we first hear this we're like who's linda and then we were like well we thought her name
19:29was kara
19:30and we end up finding out that kara is apparently a name that she uses as an alias
19:36after learning linda had been using an alias detectives are eager to learn more about her from her daughter
19:47linda and i were both adopted we grew up in pekin indiana she loved animals that was like her big
19:55thing linda loved animals growing up linda was very hyper she was like a wild child she used to sneak
20:04out
20:04the bedroom window when she was very young she didn't like school very much and she finished high
20:10school after dropping out of high school linda fell in love linda got married really young
20:17she met this guy that was a mechanic and she married him but the marriage ended in divorce
20:26over the next decade linda had three children but her relationships never lasted
20:33she had a lot of boyfriends but it never worked out very well for her linda would do anything she
20:39could to make sure that her kids were taken care of her jobs were like restaurant waitress stuff like
20:46that she never really got into any kind of office or anything because she hadn't finished school
20:53and then linda got in trouble you know but her trouble was more
21:00mischievous trouble like she would you know write bad checks detectives learned linda had met walter
21:09wrens about three years earlier he apparently lived the same sort of life that she lived
21:16that on again off again crazy life of thieving and lying and that was their world
21:26i was glad that we actually found out what cara's real name was linda buckner that helped us because
21:32then we found that she was actually wanted from the state of kentucky the warrant she had at the time
21:37was a parole violation warrant but i think the initial charge was something to the effect of
21:42credit card fraud so that explained why she'd been lying about her name the concern is that she's gone
21:49from some type of credit card fraud in kentucky to maybe the same kind of thing in ohio involving
21:57patsy's debit card so my thoughts at that particular point were they may have done something to patsy
22:04for her money we're gonna find them come hell or high water we're gonna do what we need to do
22:26mansfield detectives are searching for walter wrens and linda buckner
22:30in connection with the disappearance of patsy hudson we contact kentucky because linda has the war
22:38in kentucky and at that time it was not a nationwide and we explained to them what we
22:43have going on and they were able to request that that be changed to a nationwide pickup so now now
22:49we
22:50have everyone everyone in all 50 states that is on the lookout
22:58as detectives wait for a lead they begin sifting through the mail recovered from walter's home
23:05there was a bank statement from the credit union uh from walter's account in the mail
23:11that we collected from the house after they left but when i found that i then subpoenaed his records
23:18the shocking part about that was when you look at the date and time that his card was used
23:23patsy's was used at the same date and time so what we did was we got a map of the
23:30united states
23:32and we started using colored pins on the map so we'd pin dates and times when walter's card was used
23:39and when patsy's card was used and the the pins with walter and patsy's cards matched clear to montana
23:49clear to texas and everywhere in between they're being used in the same area in the same spots in
23:56the same towns we start making contact with local authorities there can you go and obtain video from
24:04the atm or from the store we can verify that yes that that is walter and linda and patsy wasn't
24:11with
24:11them ever we were positive at this point that they had done something there that you know most likely
24:18they had killed her obviously we wanted to find walter and linda so we contacted the u.s marshals
24:26in an attempt to have them locate these two individuals they start checking every license plate
24:33that's been run every stop that's been made every call that's come in involving anything remotely close
24:41to the vehicle that they were possibly in i was certainly concerned that maybe we're not going to
24:47find them but then a tip came in from mississippi from an individual named christina cooper in january of
24:582016. she had information about a potential murder she tells us that she lives in a trailer park
25:08and the people that we're looking for were her next door neighbors she mentioned that one evening
25:15they were sitting around the fire drinking beer talking about you know where they've been what they've
25:20done but then the neighbors start talking about a missing person from mansfield ohio that
25:28they murdered and dismembered in her bathtub a dismemberment death was is just horrific it would be just
25:36incredibly messy incredibly brutal and i mean barbaric
25:45so christina when she was uh given this this story she says that they used some type of
25:54hunting knives to cut her off and she was like wouldn't that be a lot of blood like what happened
26:03and then he proceeded to say that they ran the water for days on end and so in contacting our
26:10water
26:10department um they confirmed there was about a three-day window in the beginning of july where patsy's
26:17water usage was completely through the roof water was being ran non-stop which coincides with what
26:25christina was saying and uh before i hung up with her she said well something kind of strange they
26:32left out of here pretty quick in a jeep they stole so she gave me a good description of the
26:37jeep
26:38and then spray painted it black and kind of which direction they were headed
26:44so at that time we contacted the marshals and said here's a vehicle a direction and here's where they
26:50left from and when linda's daughter in indiana had told us they like to frequent state parks
26:57because they can stay really cheap they like to tent camp
27:02and we said to the marshals if there are state parks you might want to kind of look at those
27:09because that's where they like to frequent
27:19on february 4th 2016 u.s marshals were able to arrest walter rents and linda buckner at a campsite
27:28just outside of nashville tennessee they went calmly and they were taken into custody
27:44i told him i was kidnapped i was scared to death i know it sounds crazy but it's the truth
28:02that's the truth that's the truth that's the truth that's the truth that's the truth that's the truth
28:05seven months after 62 year old patsy hudson went missing authorities have finally caught up to their
28:11primary suspects linda buckner and walter renns detectives decide to interview linda first we go down to pick
28:22up linda and bring her back and we mirandize her and then she started talking about the relationship
28:29with walter you met him online right i thought he was just a really nice guy okay and then from
28:37where
28:37what did you decide to do i was in kentucky and he came and got me and brought me to
28:42his house
28:43he was just so sweet when i first met him and then he just gradually started changing you know
28:49he just progressively got abusive towards me and stuff and i was scared linda explains that in the
28:59fall of 2014 she got the police involved after a terrifying incident she beat the
29:06out of me and kept me in the house and wouldn't give my clothes and took me in here with
29:10the hatchet
29:12so i called 911 and told them that they came out and arrested him okay so he stays in jail
29:18for three
29:19months right why would you get back with walter because he told me he would kill my grandkids and
29:27my daughter and me if he found me linda tells detectives that when they moved into the house next
29:34door to patsy the two women had become fast friends did you see her every day at this point yeah
29:41she was just neighborly you know hi how you doing and all that we didn't have a vehicle at the
29:46time
29:46so she would let me go to the store with her and then walter and i started mowing her yard
29:50and things
29:51like that she had cable tv and they liked to watch uh wrestling matches and football games and he would
29:57go over and watch the games with her linda told me that at one point you know she had gained
30:03enough trust
30:04with patsy that patsy had given her you know the information to her bank account and her card like
30:10her pin numbers sometimes she'd give me her debit card because she had trouble seeing it and she
30:17couldn't see the letters and stuff detectives confront linda about the romance rumors between walter
30:23and patsy do you think they're having a sexual affair i asked him of course he denied him whether
30:32the rumors were true or not linda explains that she only had one priority at that point linda goes and
30:40tells us that she was in fear of walter and so the plan was is that her and patsy were
30:47going
30:47to take off together to florida i just wanted to get away from him and she knew that she said
30:54walter
30:54found is out above it and goes into a massive rage and kills patsy i was not there he just
31:07came home
31:08and he said i killed her last time he claimed that she was down you know he came up behind
31:14her and
31:14chased her you went over right you had to check it out yes so when you went over to the
31:19house and
31:19the passage house where's patsy in the bathtub in the back did you stay in the house with walter
31:25i went home i was just scared he told me go william yeah i cut her up you know like
31:30he just like
31:31it was like cutting up a chicken did you call somebody say hey walter just killed the neighbor
31:35chopped her up she wanted to portray herself as a person who she had to go along with him because
31:52he threatened her with physical harm he threatened to physically harm her family
31:57i told him that i couldn't leave they wouldn't believe me
32:11i was just that scared you know with the witness miss cooper the woman who called in the tip there
32:24is
32:25nothing from her observations of them that indicated that linda was not free to come and go
32:32as she wanted i think all of it was very much a ruse patsy's been dumped somewhere we don't know
32:40where
32:41but they killed her and we have to find a body now i did not know where she was at
32:47i did not know where her remains was at if i knew i would have told them
32:55detectives turn their attention to walter hoping he will reveal more information about the crime
33:04he talked about at one point there was an altercation between patsy and linda that ultimately leads to
33:14patsy having a heart attack and dying at that point he says that linda orders him what to do and
33:29this is
33:29all her idea and he only did what he was told to do that's when she kicked in like i
33:36want to take her
33:37idea and from there what happens next she makes me take an operator up staircase you carry your patsy
33:46upstairs and where do you take her upstairs for it to the bathtub that's where she wanted to
33:54she tells her stuff i couldn't watch it
34:06it's like uh from a horror movie and i just try to stay out of her way
34:14at one point he tells a story that linda actually had stabbed patsy
34:21he tells all sorts of things but regardless of whatever version of events it was he told
34:28she was the one that did it when you got finger pointing back and forth the truth is probably in
34:34the middle somewhere
34:38he also then reveals that he would be willing to take them and show them where he remembers disposing of
34:47parts of patsy's body walter actually took uh officers around to all these locations in the county
34:57and explained where they dumped what body parts they recovered her skull part of her pelvis and part of her
35:05foot um and some vertebrae
35:11it's grisly it's brutal they dismembered her and scattered her around rural parts of the county
35:25with linda and walter telling different stories patsy's cause of death remains a mystery
35:32there was not a lot left most of it was just skeletal
35:35so you can't do a normal autopsy and say they were strangled shot or stabbed
35:44as to what happened to patsy's beloved cats luckily that mystery is eventually solved
35:53we were contacted by a female she came forward when the story kind of broke in the news
35:58on july 10th 2015 on one of the back roads here in richland county she had seen this man she
36:09described
36:10him as a creepy man in a blue van tossing something along the road there along the riverbank
36:18she and a friend went back and they discovered approximately 20 cats some with collars all around
36:26that area she couldn't catch all of them but the ones that were there she did take them in she
36:32later
36:32identified walter out of a lineup as the gentleman she saw dumping the cats on that road i think that
36:39this shows some pretty serious planning going into this type of event enough forethought that we have
36:45to get rid of the cats we have to uh just make it look like she just left in this
36:50particular case there
36:51was a lot of circumstantial evidence not a lot of direct evidence so there's a lot of work to do
36:57between
36:57then and the trial date because it only takes one juror to say i don't think they proved this
37:04coming up the accused continue to point the finger of blame at one another
37:17why didn't you call 9-1-1 walter i didn't kill her i'm just hope one day i can prove
37:24my innocence
37:38in november 2016 53 year old walter renz and his girlfriend 58 year old linda buckner
37:46are awaiting trial for the 2015 murder of patsy hudson
37:54walter renz and linda buckner were charged with aggravated murder murder abuse of a corpse tampering
38:01with evidence receiving stolen property misuse of a credit card and identity theft
38:09the presumed motive behind this killing was clearly to gain access to patsy's financial assets both walter
38:19and linda were not actively employed they were living off of relatives and patsy had a income her social
38:29security that was paid to her each month so when you have an individual that has had a history of
38:36taking other people's assets or benefiting financially from other individuals as linda was
38:44it isn't a huge leap to think that she said hey let's do this
38:52linda was the type of person that knew the ins and outs of how to deal with the banking system
38:58and how
38:58to obtain information and so she definitely was more of the schemer and the planner
39:06walter just kind of appeared to be
39:09not real sure he could get along in life without having someone to help him and i don't think by
39:15herself linda was physically big enough to commit this crime once they came together that was just
39:22like the perfect storm and i think they would have continued to do it as long as they could have
39:28they would have found another victim they would have found another patsy
39:35on november 29th 2016 linda takes the stand in her own defense and shifts the blame to walter
39:45i didn't kill her i thought he was gonna kill me i really thought he was gonna kill me
39:51when linda testifies at trial she again offers complete inconsistent sorts of statements she was
40:01not very cooperative even with her own attorney when he was attempting to cross-examine her
40:08so it led to a clear understanding that she was not credible on november 30th the jury reaches a verdict
40:21they said that i was guilty
40:25they wouldn't believe me i knew i didn't do it so i mean i was upset of course based upon
40:33the fact that
40:34they are charged with aggravated murder life without the possibility of parole is the ultimate
40:40sentence for that crime in ohio
40:47in april of 2017 walter rentz went to trial similar evidence was presented at his trial same theories
40:57mostly same witnesses walter took the stand in his own defense walter
41:03basically said the same thing linda did well she made me help her it was all her idea
41:27the jury deliberated and found him guilty of all seven counts
41:33they will never do this to another person ever i think justice was served in that aspect
41:45she didn't deserve that and she didn't deserve it
41:54you know he just wanted me for himself and he didn't want me around nobody
42:00it's been over 10 years in here i'll just hope one day i can prove my innocence
42:15the tragedy in all of this is that patsy was just a good human being
42:21she was living her life and not bothering anybody and all of that's lost because of someone's greed
42:29and selfishness she's always been remembered by us as a nice happy person
42:38patty was a very nice lady patty was a very nice lady she will forever be miss
42:41so
42:56how do you
42:59You
