00:03Peter DeSev is a wonderful artist.
00:07You look at a drawing of Peter's and you immediately get a sense of who that character is
00:14and, you know, what their personality is like, and it just screams out at you.
00:21And Peter's contribution to this movie is just enormous.
00:28Hello, everybody. My name is Peter DeSev.
00:30I'm the character designer on Ice Age and Ice Age 2, The Meltdown,
00:34and I think I've got the best job in the whole movie, really.
00:41With any character I draw, I'm always trying to think of the basic shapes that make up what he looks
00:47like.
00:47In this instance, we've got Sid, who, if you look at him,
00:52he's really made up of very basic shapes.
00:56In fact, when I look at him, I think of bowling pins, ping pong balls, a football, and triangles.
01:05And I know you're thinking, what are you talking about?
01:09Let me show you. It's very simple.
01:11Somebody here likes Sid.
01:13Okay, guys, just a basic word about your tools.
01:17Nothing fancy about it. You have a crayon and a piece of paper.
01:23Now, I said football, right?
01:27You're thinking it doesn't look like Sid at all, but just wait.
01:31Now, ping pong balls for his eyes.
01:35Just perfectly round.
01:38And if you look at Sid, you'll notice that one eye is bigger than the other.
01:44That helps him look a little crazy, which is what his character is.
01:49And I'm always trying to keep in mind, what's the personality of the character like?
01:55So, here's Sid.
01:58His two eyes.
01:59So let's make this a little bigger.
02:02That makes him just look a little bit crazy.
02:06Now, here is a kind of triangle for his nose.
02:13He's mostly smiling. He's almost always smiling, Sid.
02:17So we give him a basic smile.
02:19He has those two ridiculous front teeth.
02:22And they are shaped, again, kind of like a triangle.
02:30Now, a bowling pin. Where's a bowling pin on Sid?
02:34Well, if you look, it's hidden.
02:39It's his neck and that big round belly of his.
02:45And you can see the bowling pin hidden in there.
02:50And that's not the only bowling pin.
02:54His arms are basically the same shape.
03:03And his legs, as well.
03:10Then, more triangles.
03:12His fingers and his toes are long triangles.
03:21And then there's the tail.
03:23And I'm not sure what shape to call that tail, but it's like a very long football.
03:28And that's Sid.
03:31Then, once I get the basic shapes in there, I start to make him look a little bit more realistic.
03:37So I put some shadows in here.
03:39And he has a very dark nose.
03:41Like a dog's nose.
03:43And he has these floating eyebrows.
03:45They just float up there.
03:51Sometimes I put a shadow.
03:53Make him look like he's standing on the ground.
04:00So, that's a very basic lesson on how to draw Sid.
04:03And you're not going to get it perfect every time.
04:06I don't get it perfect every time I do it.
04:08The main thing is, you just keep practicing and have fun.
04:13See you later.
