Hamas announces dissolution of Gaza governing body, paves way for technocratic committee

00:01The Palestinian militant group Hamas announced the dissolution of the body that has governed
00:07the Gaza Strip for nearly two decades on Monday. The news was shared by Hamas' government media
00:14office, who said that the head of the government's emergency committee,
00:18Mohamed Al-Farra, had officially submitted his resignation. Al-Farra decided to dissolve the
00:24committee to facilitate the administrative and governmental transition to the National
00:29Committee for the Administration of Gaza, or NCAG. The NCAG was created by the so-called
00:37Board of Peace established by U.S. President Donald Trump when a ceasefire was brockered
00:43between Hamas and Israel in October 2025. Attacks by Israel in the Gaza Strip have
00:49nonetheless continued since then, resulting in hundreds of deaths. A Hamas spokesperson said
00:56that the organization was now stepping down to remove any pretext for the occupation.
01:02The move now clears the way for a technocratic committee to implement civilian rule.
01:08Hamas has run Gaza since its fighters seized control from rival Palestinian movement Fatah
01:14in 2007 after winning legislative elections the previous year. Since the October ceasefire,
01:22the group has repeatedly said it is prepared to step aside from the day-to-day governance,
01:27but the thorny issue of its disarmament remains unresolved.
