00:00Oh yeah, it's a word in an African dialect meaning thief.
00:04In a much less friendly way.
00:05What dialect?
00:06Wakanda.
00:09Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:11And today we're counting down our picks for mistakes film actors made that actually improved the scene.
00:17I need more coffee.
00:20Are you alright?
00:21It's fine.
00:24Number 20. Alicia Silverstone's mispronunciation, Clueless.
00:28Ew, get off of me.
00:31Ugh, as if.
00:33According to Alicia Silverstone herself, people on the set of the film Clueless were ready to tell her she was
00:38mispronouncing the word Haitians.
00:39But director Amy Heckerling said not so fast.
00:42Like right now, for example, the Haitians need to come to America.
00:47That's because she felt that Silverstone was actually embodying her character well, albeit accidentally.
00:53Cher Horowitz is a character who displays great confidence and a sense of deep knowledge.
00:57But we learn that there are plenty of things she is naive about.
01:00Or dare we say, clueless about.
01:03Her flaws are also what make her human.
01:05Silverstone simply saying one word incorrectly during her character's classroom speech helped turn what would have already been a memorable
01:11scene into an iconic one.
01:13So, if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians.
01:19Number 19. Matt Dillon falling off his chair.
01:22The Outsiders.
01:24You sure you want to do this?
01:26I came here to see a movie and I'm going to see a movie.
01:29Freezing, man.
01:30While at the drive-in theater, Matt Dillon's Dallas tries to put the moves on Diane Lane's Cherry.
01:35Unfortunately for him, it's not so smooth when he falls off his chair.
01:43This was not supposed to happen.
01:45You can hear C. Thomas Howell's pony boy cracking up and even see him looking at the camera.
01:50Presumably ready for a retake, but no.
01:53Director Francis Ford Coppola liked what he saw and kept the cameras rolling.
01:56Clearly, Lane found her co-stars fall amusing too.
01:59But the character's laughing made sense.
02:01After all, the guy just fell off his chair while trying to hit on this girl.
02:04His unscripted moment not only suited the scene, but added humor to it.
02:09I'm never nice.
02:11Can I interest you in a Coca-Cola or a 7-0?
02:15Get lost, hood!
02:17Number 18. Ask Me Again.
02:19Almost Famous.
02:20I've made a decision.
02:23I'm going to live in Morocco for one year.
02:27When Penny asks William if he wants to go with her to Morocco,
02:29the aspiring rock journalist says yes, but doesn't seem all that excited at first.
02:35Do you want to come?
02:38Yes.
02:40Yeah.
02:41Yeah.
02:42You sure?
02:43Actor Patrick Fugate must have realized this because he told Kate Hudson to ask him again.
02:47As in, to do their lines over again.
02:50Ask me again.
02:52Do you want to come?
02:54Yes. Yes.
02:57The thing is, director Cameron Crowe thought that the unscripted line worked.
03:01And we can't argue, particularly considering that when Penny does ask William again,
03:06he lights up with excitement that he initially concealed.
03:08It felt authentic for the teenage character to be taken aback by the request
03:12and perhaps try to play it a bit cool before realizing he can let his true feelings show.
03:18Number 17.
03:19Anne Hathaway's Bleacher Slip.
03:20The Princess Diaries.
03:22You're the most popular girl in school.
03:24Everybody wants to take your picture.
03:25Everybody wants to be your best friend.
03:27Hi, Lily.
03:28Hi.
03:29Being a princess does not make you immune to wipeouts.
03:32Just ask Anne Hathaway's Mia Thermopoulos in The Princess Diaries.
03:36The character slips and falls on the bleachers during a conversation with her friend Lily.
03:40Number one, no privacy.
03:42Number two, you always have to look just right.
03:45Number three, woo!
03:48According to Hathaway, this was not in the script.
03:51It had recently rained and they were in a time crunch to get the scene done before it got dark.
03:56Crew members had tried to wipe down the bleachers,
03:58but that didn't stop Hathaway from slipping and falling as she attempted a spinning maneuver.
04:03She couldn't help but laugh.
04:04Director Gary Marshall kept the shot because he found it charming.
04:07It also added humor, that's for sure.
04:09Never thought about it again.
04:11And all of a sudden, like six months later, it's in the trailer.
04:15Number 16.
04:16Telephone Booth Fart.
04:18Rain Man.
04:18It's very crowded.
04:19It's very crowded in here.
04:21One little second, okay?
04:22Huh?
04:23What?
04:24Two people in one telephone booth makes for a cramped space that can only be made more uncomfortable by a
04:30few things.
04:30One of those is, well, a fart, as the movie Rain Man shows us.
04:35Yeah, Charlie Babbitt, I'll hold.
04:36Fart.
04:37Did you fart right now?
04:38Fart.
04:39But it wasn't in the script for Dustin Hoffman to let one rip, or to announce it.
04:44Tom Cruise's disgusted reaction was genuine in such a way that it worked for the scene.
04:48The funny interaction was also fitting for the two characters' relationship dynamic,
04:52as well as the setting of the confined telephone booth.
04:55While Cruise may have wished it never happened, we think it was for the better that it did.
05:00How can you stand that?
05:01I don't mind it.
05:01How can you stand that?
05:02Number 15, Scooter Crash, American Graffiti.
05:10This is a case of a mistake that worked out well for the opening scene of a film.
05:14What a way to start.
05:16While pulling up to Mel's drive-in, Terry crashes his Vespa into a garbage can right outside the building.
05:27Funnily enough, that was not the way his entrance was supposed to go.
05:31Actor Charles Martin Smith legitimately lost control of the scooter,
05:35but he played off the mishap so well that it made the final cut.
05:38Not only did it make for a funny, memorable start to American Graffiti,
05:42but viewers would soon see that it was appropriate for his socially awkward character.
05:54Number 14, Al Pacino's Trash Can Tumble, Scent of a Woman.
06:07In the role of a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel who's also blind,
06:11Al Pacino used a walking cane for his Academy Award-winning performance in Scent of a Woman.
06:17One dangerous moment for his character comes when crossing the street amidst heavy traffic.
06:21While he makes it across unscathed, he ends up falling into a trash can.
06:32This was an unplanned stumble by the actor.
06:35Apparently, even when something went wrong for him during this critically acclaimed performance,
06:39it actually panned out.
06:41That's because the mishap was not only in character,
06:44but both Pacino and his co-star Chris O'Donnell played it off brilliantly.
06:54Number 13, Peter, The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
07:01Being so close to Spider-Man comes with its challenges,
07:04like, you know, keeping his massive secret.
07:07Naturally, you might accidentally say his name while he's in costume.
07:10That is exactly what Gwen Stacy does in The Amazing Spider-Man 2,
07:14after the superhero refuses to let her go with him to fight Electro by webbing her hand to a police
07:19car.
07:20Annoyed, she yells out his name.
07:21But Emma Stone was not supposed to do that.
07:29You can even see her make an oops expression, reacting to her genuine mistake.
07:34But this spontaneous slip-up in a high-tension moment between her character and Andrew Garfield's made perfect sense.
07:40And so, it made the final cut.
07:42Number 12, The Bed or the Couch?
07:44Titanic.
07:45As a paying customer,
07:49I expect to get what I want.
07:52This is a case of a Freudian slip working wonders for a scene.
07:55During a moment in Titanic in which Rose is getting ready to undress,
07:59Jack suggests she sit on the bed.
08:01But that's not what he meant.
08:03And that's not what Leonardo DiCaprio meant.
08:07Overrun.
08:08The bed.
08:09The couch.
08:09The original script had him saying couch because that's what his character is pointing at.
08:14But Leo's mistake and subsequent correction worked beautifully.
08:18The slip-up revealed the intensity of Jack's feelings and desires,
08:21while fitting the context to a T.
08:23James Cameron liked it so much that he kept it in the final cut
08:26of what would become the Oscar winner for Best Picture.
08:29Sorry to disappoint you, Mr. Bodine.
08:32Jack was very professional.
08:34Number 11, But Why Male Models?
08:37Zoolander.
08:37A finger jockey.
08:38We don't think the same way as the face and body boys do.
08:41We're a different breed.
08:42So why male models?
08:44Who knew that while forgetting your line,
08:46you could just repeat your previous one and voila.
08:49Let's be real.
08:50Usually that's a recipe for a retake.
08:52But not in this case, because it was so appropriate for the character.
08:56During a key turning point in Zoolander,
08:58Derek is questioning why male models are being brainwashed
09:01when J.P. Pruitt gives a bizarre explanation.
09:04After hearing it, Derek hilariously repeats his question anyway.
09:07But why male models?
09:14You serious?
09:15I just, I just told you that a moment ago.
09:18That's because Ben Stiller forgot his line.
09:20But it actually worked out perfectly.
09:22Since Derek Zoolander is not the sharpest tool in the shed,
09:25that kind of repetition is exactly what you would expect from him.
09:29Get out of here.
09:31Hang in there, J.P.
09:33Ah!
09:34You freaking idiot!
09:36Number 10.
09:37Breaking a Toilet.
09:38The Master.
09:39Just me, Freddy.
09:40Just you.
09:41I'm the only one that likes you.
09:43Joaquin Phoenix plays Freddy,
09:44a troubled World War II veteran who's prone to violent outbursts.
09:48After he finds himself getting sucked in by a cult,
09:50he and the cult leader get arrested and tossed in jail.
09:53No, no, no, no, no.
09:55No, no, no, no, no, Freddy!
09:57Freddy!
09:57Freddy erupts in anger,
09:59doing his best to destroy his prison cell
10:01even though his hands are cuffed behind his back.
10:04Phoenix didn't break the toilet on purpose.
10:06In fact, he didn't even realize he could break the toilet when he kicked it.
10:15The accidental destruction perfectly illustrates the pointlessness of Freddy's rage.
10:20It's harmful to himself and those around him,
10:23and yet he can't contain it.
10:25Implanted with a push-pull mechanism
10:27that keeps you fearful of authority and destructive.
10:31Number 9.
10:32An Expensive Sneeze.
10:33Annie Hall.
10:34In this classic rom-com,
10:36Alvy and his girlfriend Annie are hanging out with some friends
10:39when they pressure him to try cocaine.
10:40I don't want to put a wad of white powder in my nose.
10:43There's the nasal membrane.
10:45You never want to try anything new, Al.
10:46How can you say that?
10:48He's never touched the stuff before
10:49and doesn't seem particularly interested in doing so now.
10:52He picks up the box to examine it
10:54and just as his friend tells him how expensive it is,
10:57he sneezes,
10:58blasting the white powder everywhere.
11:00I'm sure!
11:04That sneeze was not in the script.
11:06It happened during rehearsals by accident
11:08and Woody Allen thought it was so funny
11:10he put it in the movie.
11:11That was a smart move
11:12because test audiences cracked up
11:14at the now-famous gag.
11:16Number 8.
11:17Accidentally Recreating an Iconic Scene.
11:19Casino Royale.
11:21One of the most memorable scenes
11:22from the James Bond franchise
11:24is in the very first Bond film,
11:26Doctor No,
11:26when the gorgeous Ursula Andress
11:28emerges from the ocean in a white bikini.
11:3740 years later,
11:38Die Another Day paid homage to the scene
11:40with Halle Berry and Pierce Brosnan.
11:47And just four years after that,
11:50Daniel Craig recreated the scene again.
11:52According to the script,
11:53Bond is supposed to keep swimming,
11:55but Craig ran into a sandbar
11:57and had to stand up.
11:58The similarities between this scene
12:00and the version from Doctor No
12:01were obvious to everyone.
12:07Craig might not be thrilled
12:09about how famous the shot has become,
12:10but it certainly did not hurt his image.
12:13I didn't realize the repercussions of it.
12:14I had no idea that it was going to be
12:15sort of as, you know,
12:18I'd be haunted by it for the rest of my life.
12:20Number 7.
12:21George C. Scott Trips and Falls.
12:23Doctor Strangelove.
12:24Comedy often doesn't age well,
12:26but this movie is an exception.
12:28Stanley Kubrick's 1964 satire
12:31about an impending nuclear apocalypse
12:32is packed with laugh-out-loud moments
12:34and ridiculous characters.
12:36You mean people could actually
12:38stay down there for a hundred years?
12:40It would not be difficult, my inferior.
12:42Nuclear reactors could...
12:44I'm sorry, Mr. President.
12:46And none more so than
12:47George C. Scott's General Buck Turgidson.
12:50I'm beginning to smell
12:51a big, fat, commie rat.
12:52I mean,
12:54suppose him kiss off his lion
12:55about that fourth plane
12:56just looking for an excuse
12:57to clobber us.
12:58I mean,
12:58if the spaghetti hits the fan now,
13:00we're in trouble.
13:01Scott was known
13:01for playing serious figures,
13:03so his over-the-top portrayal
13:05of Turgidson
13:06was a departure
13:06from his usual routine.
13:08He's down to a safe level
13:09after two weeks.
13:10You've obviously never heard
13:11of Cabal Thorium G.
13:14Well, what about it?
13:14In this scene,
13:15a group of officials
13:16discuss the fallout
13:17of nuclear war,
13:18and Turgidson,
13:19as usual,
13:20is flipping out.
13:21At one point,
13:22he slips and falls,
13:23makes a surprisingly
13:24graceful recovery,
13:26and carries on
13:27as if nothing happened.
13:30The fall was
13:33a complete accident,
13:35but Scott,
13:35a consummate professional,
13:37stayed in character,
13:38and Qbert kept it in.
13:40Number six.
13:41A tablecloth trick
13:42works too well.
13:43How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
13:44Tomorrow is Christmas.
13:46It's practically here.
13:48Jim Carrey is a master improviser,
13:50and some of his funniest
13:52movie moments
13:52were not in the original scripts.
14:06Case in point,
14:08this scene in which
14:09the Grinch gets ready
14:10to attend a Whoville
14:11Christmas celebration.
14:12When Carrey grabs
14:13the tablecloth,
14:14he's supposed to send
14:15everything on the table
14:16clattering to the floor,
14:17but the trick works
14:18a little too well.
14:19In a moment of comedic genius,
14:21he comes back into frame
14:22and just knocks
14:23everything over himself.
14:31It's an unexpectedly
14:32hilarious improvisation,
14:34made even funnier
14:35by Carrey's gift
14:36for physical comedy.
14:38Number five.
14:38An unplanned frisbee bite.
14:40The mask.
14:41Police!
14:45Open up!
14:46Oh my gosh.
14:49Jim Carrey's improv skills
14:50save the day again,
14:51but this time,
14:52he wasn't the one
14:53who messed up the scene.
14:54As his character Stanley
14:55tries to hide the evidence
14:56of his crimes
14:57from a nosy detective,
14:58his dog Milo
14:59spots a frisbee
15:00in Stanley's hand
15:01and just can't help himself.
15:02Milo,
15:03whose real name
15:04was Max,
15:04hangs on for dear life
15:05despite Stanley's attempts
15:07to wrench the frisbee
15:08away from him.
15:08No, no, no.
15:09Stop it.
15:11I'm coming, okay?
15:13I'm coming.
15:14I'll be right there.
15:15A lesser actor
15:16would have broken character,
15:17but this is Jim Carrey.
15:19Max's commitment
15:20to the bit
15:20and Carrey's decision
15:21to just roll with it
15:22make for an unplanned
15:24piece of comedy gold.
15:25Don't insult
15:26my intelligence, Ipkis.
15:27He robs the bank
15:28you work in
15:29and then I find this
15:29in the Coco Bongo.
15:31Number four.
15:32Bart's Laugh.
15:33Blazing Saddles.
15:34You try keeping
15:35a straight face
15:35in the presence
15:36of Gene Wilder.
15:37It's practically impossible.
15:39In this scene,
15:40the Waco kid
15:40has a heart-to-heart
15:41with Sheriff Bart
15:42about why the townsfolk
15:43won't accept
15:44a black lawman.
15:45What did you expect?
15:46Welcome, sonny.
15:49Make yourself at home.
15:52Marry my daughter.
15:53It's obvious
15:54that Cleavon Little
15:55is stifling a smile
15:56throughout Wilder's monologue
15:57and at the end,
15:58he breaks into
15:59a genuine laugh
16:00and who can blame him?
16:01Wilder's delivery
16:02is brilliant.
16:03The common clay
16:05of the New West.
16:08You know.
16:12Morons.
16:14Although Little
16:15technically broke character,
16:16the scene is that
16:17much funnier for it.
16:19Mel Brooks
16:19obviously agreed
16:20since he used
16:21that take
16:21in the final cut.
16:22Did you hear that?
16:24Now it's pleased.
16:25This morning
16:25I couldn't get
16:26the time of day.
16:27Number three.
16:28Confusing Ant-Man
16:29for Spider-Man.
16:30Ant-Man and the Wasp
16:31Quantumania.
16:32You're the bug man.
16:34You get big
16:34and you're small
16:35like a big bug.
16:37You're right.
16:38That's me.
16:39Just a coffee, please.
16:40Twelve dollars.
16:41This mistake
16:41was so unintentionally hilarious
16:43they put it in the trailer.
16:45Scott is enjoying
16:46his newfound fame
16:47as an Avenger,
16:48but he realizes
16:49he's not quite
16:50at the top of the A-list
16:51when his local barista
16:52confuses him
16:53for a different
16:54red-costumed hero.
16:55Everywhere I go,
16:56people tell me
16:57the same thing.
16:58Thank you, Spider-Man.
17:01That's Cuban actor
17:02Ruben Rabasa
17:03who was thrilled
17:04to be involved
17:05with a Marvel movie
17:05even though he wasn't
17:07super familiar
17:08with this film's
17:08main character.
17:09Rabasa wasn't supposed
17:10to call Scott Spider-Man
17:12but the flub
17:12and Paul Rudd's
17:13absolutely perfect reaction
17:15were so good
17:16they made it
17:17into the movie.
17:18The line is so funny
17:19it's hard to believe
17:20it wasn't scripted.
17:21When I say
17:21thank you Spider-Man
17:22everybody go
17:23what?
17:24What did he say?
17:25I say
17:25what are they laughing about?
17:27I thought I was
17:28doing the right thing
17:28no, I made a mistake.
17:30Number 2
17:31Star-Lord Drops the Orb
17:33Guardians of the Galaxy
17:34We're stuck together
17:36until we get the money.
17:38I have no interest
17:39in money.
17:40Great.
17:41The jury is still out
17:43on whether this was
17:43truly a mistake
17:44or just a last-minute improv.
17:46Chris Pratt originally claimed
17:48that it was an accident
17:48and director James Gunn
17:50said as much
17:50in the DVD commentary.
17:52This was not planned.
17:53Chris actually dropped the orb
17:54and then he of course
17:55recovered it
17:56with humor
17:57but he actually dropped the orb.
17:58That was not planned at all.
18:00Later Pratt changed his story
18:02and said he dropped
18:02the orb on purpose
18:03but Gunn wasn't
18:05100% convinced
18:06that was true.
18:07Let us see what you brought.
18:15Whatever the case may be
18:17it is a hilarious moment
18:18that fits perfectly
18:19with both Peter Quill's character

18:22Kudos to Chris Pratt
18:23for either a clever improvisation
18:25or a quick recovery.
