00:00Bob, baseball's all-star voting came in.
00:02Are you happy with the process?
00:04You know, obviously you've got a fan part of this whole voting here,
00:08but to me it looks like, again, the big markets,
00:11kind of if you go with a major election like a presidential election,
00:15now you see why you have electoral colleges
00:17because it really helps everybody get a chance to get into the starting lineup.
00:21Are you okay with the procedure on how they select the team?
00:26I am.
00:26I mean, it's a fan contest.
00:28It's an exhibition.
00:30So let the fans vote who the starter is.
00:32And that's all they've got is the starters.
00:34Then it's the players.
00:35So the players say, okay, we'll do our picks.
00:37So they pick, you know, the players, the managers, the coaches,
00:40they pick who's the entire starting rotation, the relievers, and all the reserves.
00:46And then MLB has got, you know, six picks on each side.
00:51A lot of that lies to fill in as far as make sure every team is represented.
00:55Like they had to make sure that Walker from,
00:58Jordan Walker from St. Louis was on that team.
01:01Cardinals didn't have anybody.
01:03Goodman's on the Rockies and make sure he was on that team.
01:06So, no, I, you know, obviously there was some flaws in every process, but I like it.
01:11I still like the old days where those ballots were at the ballpark and people were filling them out and
01:16dropping in the box.
01:18I have, I have a couple of those Gillette old ballots, you know, that you put in the box when
01:24you were at the ballpark.
01:25I love those things there.
01:27Were there any people that you thought maybe were snubbed in this voting here?
01:31Was there somebody that you thought should have been in the all-star game nationally or American League?
01:37Well, there's a lot of guys that could have been.
01:39I mean, look at Boston Red Sox.
01:41I mean, Sonny Gray has had a heck of a year.
01:43Was he 9-1, 10-1?
01:45He deserves to be in, and I think they'll add him.
01:48Wilson Contreras had a monster year.
01:50So, really, the Red Sox, best pitcher and best hitter.
01:54You know, neither one of them are in the game.
01:56Bryce Terang belongs for the Milwaukee Brewers.
02:00So, you're going on.
02:01There's about, you know, Westerhoff, the nice young rookie for the Cardinals.
02:06He should be in that game.
02:07So, there's about, you know, 10 or 12, you know, good snubs.
02:11But there's so many replacements in the last, you know, 10 days.
02:15So, we'll see who is left out, you know, come all-star game.
02:19Absolutely here.
02:21Bob, do you still like the all-star game?
02:23Do you think it still has the punch that it once had?
02:27I mean, look, and I have this conversation with you all the time,
02:30and I know you're a huge historian with it.
02:32But, I mean, it just as a – maybe I romanticized more about it when I was a kid
02:38because we saw the National League American League guys only once
02:41outside of a World Series.
02:43Do you think it still has that same punch when we get to that game next week?
02:49No, not even close.
02:50I mean, before, you would have some ex-players come in and say,
02:54hey, we got to beat these SOBs.
02:55You know, let's keep our pride up here.
02:58You got Pete Rose, you know, blowing over Ray Fossey at home plate.
03:02You know, players play to win.
03:04They don't play to win now.
03:05It's just exhibition, and they're having fun with it.
03:07And I wish the pitchers were pitching more.
03:09It's usually just one inning at a time.
03:11I'd like to see a guy go two or three innings, at least two innings,
03:14like when Pedro Martinez struck out five or six at Fenway.
03:18You know, that was a magical moment.
03:19Good game.
