00:03As we get ready, I want you to understand what our next conversation is all about.
00:08We are going to talk about Beyond Buy Black, building everyday habits that strengthen our
00:14communities.
00:15Because it's good to know that you can support a black business.
00:19It's even better to know how can I stay consistent with that business beyond the initial purchase.
00:25And how can I build everyday habits that strengthen communities that look like me and that look
00:31like you.
00:33Now, for those of you who are here for the very first time, is that the Super Fox squad?
00:40Okay, hold on.
00:41I looked over and I said, wait a minute, sir.
00:43We got some fine established gentlemen right on over here.
00:46My eyes kind of went over.
00:47I don't know who they are, but they are somebody.
00:50And I think that we should all just give the gentlemen at Essence a round of applause for
00:55coming in and looking amazing, okay?
00:58Now, listen, I want to get it right.
01:00So, send up a representative real quick.
01:01Who are y'all so I can give a quick little shout out?
01:03Who is it?
01:04Let me get at least one gentleman real quick to tell me who you are before we introduce
01:09this panel.
01:10All right?
01:10Look at y'all.
01:12I don't know if I should run or stay in close.
01:14I mean, what are we doing?
01:15Okay, sir, tell me your name and tell me who are these gentlemen with you.
01:18How you doing, Queen?
01:19This is the Royal Kings, and I'm D. Valentine, and we are from Houston, and we are from Dallas,
01:26and we are from Cali.
01:28The K is for knowledge.
01:29The I is for integrity.
01:30The N is for nobility, and the G is for gentlemen.
01:32Blessings, kings and queens.
01:34All right.
01:35Well, y'all continue to walk around and look amazing like you do.
01:39And if you're not married, listen, there's a couple of women here that I'm sure are single
01:43and ready to mingle.
01:45Thank you, gentlemen.
01:46Thank you, gentlemen.
01:46We appreciate you.
01:48We appreciate your excellence as well.
01:51See?
01:52You never know what you're going to see at Essence Fest, right?
01:55My eye caught over here, okay?
01:57I'm working, but I got eyes.
01:59I'm working, but I got eyes.
02:01All right.
02:01So are y'all ready for this Beyond Buy Black, Building Everyday Habits That Strengthen Our
02:06Community's Conversation?
02:07All right.
02:08Perfect.
02:08So supporting black-owned businesses goes beyond one-time purchases.
02:12It's about creating lasting habits.
02:14We're going to have a conversation, matter of fact, an interactive conversation that challenge
02:19you to think differently about where and how you spend your money each day.
02:24Together, you're going to explore practical ways to discover, support, and intentionally
02:28choose black-owned businesses in your everyday routine while leaving with actual steps you
02:34can implement long after Essence Fest.
02:36So here to kick off this conversation, we have a marvelous moderator.
02:41Her name is Aminata Travore Morris with ATM Artisan.
02:48Let's go ahead and welcome her to the stage.
02:51And check out the bags.
02:52Do a little twirl for us.
02:53Do a little twirl.
02:54Yes.
02:55Show us the wares.
02:56I love it.
02:57All right.
02:58Joining her on stage as a panelist is the one and only Miss Kim Roxy from La Meek Beauty.
03:06Come on out here, Kim.
03:09And let's give it up for that top.
03:11Yes, yes, and yes again.
03:14Now here to kind of circle close this panel, we have the one and only Miss Tamara Weyer of
03:22Bougie Blooms NOFA.
03:26As she makes her way to the stage with such grace and such excellence.
03:31And we have a familiar face.
03:32If you were just here at the business pitch competition, you saw her once, but you're about
03:37to see her again.
03:37And we have the one and only Miss Shameka Stevenson-Davis of Pre-College Solutions.
03:44All right.
03:45Have an amazing panel.
03:49Welcome, everyone.
03:50Y'all out there?
03:52Okay.
03:52I hear you now.
03:53I need y'all to be awake.
03:55They said it's the last panel.
03:56Let's be awake for the last panel, okay?
03:58I'm Aminata Travore.
04:00I'm here to help moderate with some beautiful women.
04:02We had a great conversation about buying black.
04:04And we're going to take that conversation even deeper now.
04:08But before we do so, I just want to say welcome again.
04:10But I want you all to tap into who you are, what you do.
04:14And let's hear it.
04:16You're first, Kim.
04:17Hey, everybody.
04:19Oh, my gosh.
04:20I see all of my friends and family in the audience.
04:22I'm Kim Roxy, K-I-M-R-O-X-I-E.
04:26And I'm the founder of Lameek Beauty.
04:28Lameek is actually the first black-owned clean makeup brand to be with retailers like Nordstrom
04:34and Ulta and JCPenney and Lumi Nicole.
04:38And so it's a clean makeup brand, and I'm happy to be here.
04:41Thank you so much, Kim.
04:43Tamara, you're next.
04:44Yes.
04:45I'm super excited to be here with you ladies and gentlemen today.
04:48My name is Tamara Wire, and I get the opportunity and privilege of being the owner of Bougie Blooms NOLA.
04:55We create memorable floral statement pieces to make sure that people celebrate and live in the present.
05:03So many of us are always thinking about that next thing that we don't get a chance to really celebrate
05:08and create those beautiful moments around us.
05:11So Bougie Blooms NOLA, we do it with a little fanciness,
05:13but we do it in a way that makes sure that we're living in the present
05:17and celebrating our own true wellness.
05:20Absolutely.
05:20Thank you for that.
05:21And we have, last but not least, Shamika.
05:24Hello, everyone.
05:25My name is Shamika Stevenson-Davidson.
05:27I am the founder of Pre-College Solutions,
05:30a college readiness coaching and consulting company
05:32where we marry college planning and financial literacy.
05:36Our goal is to get our babies through college with either no or minimum student debt.
05:43So, glad to be here.
05:45Thank you all so much.
05:46I think we know who you are now.
05:48Let's do a speed round right here, right quick.
05:50In one sentence, I want you to tell me what does it mean to be supporting our community?
05:56What does that mean, supporting our community?
05:58What does that mean to you?
05:59In one sentence.
06:02For me, I believe it means showing up.
06:05But we've got to show up for one another.
06:07These last few years and continuing on have been difficult.
06:11And so, we've got to do a better job at just showing up for each other.
06:14Now, that was more than one sentence.
06:16I know.
06:17So, we're going to follow these directions and instructions or not?
06:19You are absolutely right.
06:21You are absolutely right.
06:22I'm kidding.
06:23Showing up.
06:24We need to show up for each other.
06:25That's what it means to support our community.
06:27Who's next?
06:28You want to go, Shamika?
06:29For me, and I'm going to go past one sentence,
06:31I think of it as looking out for our next generation.
06:37Like, if we don't do the work now,
06:39then how is the next generation going to be able to understand the importance of buying black and our community?
06:47Absolutely.
06:47So, we just got some rule breakers here, y'all.
06:49I don't know what we're going to do for this last one.
06:51We're doing a speed round of what does it mean to support your community?
06:55Come on.
06:56To see the value in each other.
06:58Yeah.
06:58That's just period.
06:59You're going to follow the rules to see the values in each other.
07:03Isn't that beautiful?
07:05To see the values in each other.
07:06So, let's get into it, y'all.
07:08Buying black.
07:09We don't have a lot of time, but we want to dig deep, right?
07:11So, our first question is, when you hear the phrase, buy black, what comes to mind?
07:17The best.
07:19I'm wearing this beautiful top from a black-owned business out of Houston called Indigo Blue Boutique.
07:25And when I think about buying black, I just think about luxury.
07:29I think about those things because those are the brands that I know.
07:32I know your brand, and it's luxurious.
07:34And that's what I think about.
07:36I love that you said luxury with a black-owned brand.
07:39Because sometimes we think we got to go somewhere else.
07:41We got to get a certain name for it to be luxury.
07:43But look at you looking luxurious right now.
07:46Thank you for that.
07:47Next.
07:48What does it mean for you?
07:49For me, I think of it as our heritage.
07:53Like, before we were able to even support anybody else, we were supporting each other.
07:58And so, getting back to that, that is what I think about when I think about buying black.
08:03Beautiful.
08:03Heritage.
08:04So, we got luxury.
08:05We got heritage.
08:06What else?
08:07You know, I would say that we, as a people, we're not transactional people.
08:11So, we are relationship people, and it is so much more about just the transaction of buying black.
08:17We've got to build black.
08:19We've got to build ecosystems.
08:21So, again, I'm probably breaking the rules again.
08:24No, I love that one.
08:25But it's bigger than that.
08:26It's not about a transaction for us.
08:28That's not who we are as a people.
08:29You know, that thing right there just stood out for me because my family's from Senegal, West Africa.
08:35So, when I go there and I'm bargaining for my stuff, I can't just go in and be like, I
08:40want that, that, and that.
08:41I've got to be like, how's your mama?
08:43How's your grandma?
08:45What, what we having for lunch?
08:46Then I've got to go into them making the tea after the lunch.
08:50That transaction can take a long time.
08:52So, when we talk about not being transactional people, I think it's time that we go back to that and
08:57build relationships.
08:58So, that really stood out to me because sometimes doing business or being in this arena, you have to remember
09:03that it's not all going to be zippy, zippy, speedy, speedy.
09:06So, on that, let's go to the next question.
09:08What does moving beyond buying black, just the term buying black, what does that look like?
09:13We can throw that around all day.
09:15I'm buying black.
09:16We can do it for this Essence weekend.
09:17We can do it for a day, for Juneteenth.
09:20But beyond just the terms buying black, what does that look like?
09:24That looks like a lifestyle.
09:26It's a lifestyle.
09:28It's just the way you move.
09:30I always check to see if someone has it that's black-owned first.
09:35So, it takes a little research.
09:37You know, we're educated people.
09:39So, we also understand that we can research.
09:42We can get knowledge about different products, different things.
09:46And it's not just the things that are on the shelf.
09:48Look, I'm in major retail, and I know for a fact that less than, like, 3% of the products
09:55that are on aisles in retail stores that you go inside of are black-owned.
10:01We have to come to Essence Fest to find our black-owned brands, right?
10:04We have to come, we have to go to markets.
10:07We have to go to different things.
10:08So, you just can't go pop up at some store looking for a black-owned brand.
10:12It's probably not going to happen.
10:13But it can be a lifestyle.
10:15It can be the way you go first instead of, and also, let me say this.
10:19When you are buying black, don't just look at it as support.
10:23It's not a charity.
10:25I see one of my sisters out here, she has one of the biggest charities in the country.
10:28It's called America's Big Sister.
10:31And that's a charity.
10:32We support that.
10:33We donate to that.
10:35But when you have a business, you shop it.
10:38You don't tell Louis Vuitton that you're supporting Louis Vuitton.
10:41Louis Vuitton don't even care, right?
10:42Like, you don't tell Gucci I'm supporting Gucci.
10:45Have you ever said that?
10:46So, when you buy from Lameek, don't say you're supporting Lameek.
10:49You're shopping Lameek.
10:51You look better with Lameek.
10:52Isn't that right, Christina?
10:54One of my top customers in the audience.
10:56Like, so that's how that works.
10:59So, make sure that we start to change our mind frame.
11:03Stop saying you're supporting like you're doing somebody a favor, and you know that you're getting the most luxurious product.
11:10Can I get an amen?
11:11You're getting some of the most luxurious products and services when you come to us.
11:17We must make that mind shift.
11:19And once you see the value in each other, never will you put on a Celine bag and think it's
11:23better than her bag.
11:25Never will you walk out the door with some red bottoms thinking that that's better than black-owned brands that
11:31we know that are out here like Vallejo's shoes.
11:34See, you got to shift that mindset.
11:36And once you see the value in each other, you won't ever ask about the price again.
11:41Y'all better say amen again.
11:44Amen.
11:44Amen.
11:45All right.
11:46Yes, shifting the mindset.
11:48Shifting.
11:49Ooh, I think you just preached a sermon there.
11:51Shifting the mindset.
11:52And we'll do that on the next one, all right, y'all?
11:54But the next person, what you got to say about this?
11:57I love it, Kim.
11:58I love it.
11:59Because what we need to do is make this a habit, right?
12:02Make it a habit.
12:03Make it a habit of we're worth it.
12:06How about that?
12:07We're worth doing the next step, taking the next step, understanding and learning what are those other opportunities and what
12:14are those other products that we have that serve us, that were made for us, right?
12:19So making it a habit and not a soundbite, we are all so over soundbites.
12:25You know, we are bigger than that, right?
12:27So if we can make this mindset, this shifting mindset, a habit in the way in which we are consumers
12:33of so, so much, so much.
12:36But it needs to be a habit and not just a soundbite.
12:41And I feel like both of these ladies have pretty much said any and everything I could ever want it
12:46to say.
12:47So I echo whatever they're saying.
12:51But I would add that because I work with the next generation, that changing that mindset and making sure that
13:01we're intentional are necessary because they're watching us.
13:06They are watching us.
13:08And so our habits become their habits.
13:10So if we start now in creating the value, they're going to take that along and they're going to go
13:17way past us.
13:19Thank you for all of that.
13:20I think a lot of times it has to do with education as well.
13:24You know, when sometimes when you break down a brand and the story behind the brand and folks understand what's
13:30behind the brand, I think it becomes even more valuable.
13:32My tagline is culture is greater than currency.
13:36A lot of times we don't know that.
13:38We're throwing away our culture.
13:41We're throwing around what the value really is behind what we're doing.
13:44And we're just saying, yeah, I want that because it's that and this person got it and I'm going to
13:47have it.
13:48But there's nothing behind it.
13:50So we've got to realize the value shifts our mindsets, our habits.
13:54All of these things go hand in hand.
13:57Okay?
13:57So now we're going to tap into this question of why is building habits, we're going to continue habits, why
14:03is it more powerful than making one intentional purchase?
14:08I think we talked about it in the beginning about this being relationships.
14:12Yeah, we like to celebrate as a people collectively.
14:15And so in my business, I said in the beginning that I get the privilege and the honor, but I
14:20get the privilege and the honor to see people celebrate those important milestones in their lives.
14:25Because we become, we're a community together.
14:28So we as Bougie Blooms, we want to become a part of your village, a part of your culture, a
14:33part of those things that matter to you.
14:35That is who we are as people.
14:37That is pretty much how you get not only repeat business, but that's how you foster relationships.
14:41That is how black business, especially black women businesses, that is how we expand.
14:47We become, those relationships, that building, that community, it all matters because we become a part of each other's lives.
14:54It is not transactional.
14:55It is truly a relationship.
14:58And I want to add on to there and say sustainability.
15:02You know, it's easy to purchase something one time and never go back.
15:05But when you continuously, continuously and intentionally continue to purchase and be a supporter of that business, you don't know
15:16what you're doing for that business.
15:18You know, you're helping pay somebody on their payroll.
15:21You're helping them being able to research and come up with new products that's going to continue to help their
15:27customers.
15:27You're doing so much.
15:28You're having a market.
15:29You're doing so much when you are like, this is now my new makeup supply company.
15:35You know, this is my new company that I go to to get this type of groceries and things like
15:41that.
15:42That's what it is.
15:42It's sustainability that impacts our community.
15:47I think that was a perfect way to wrap up that question, that sustainability.
15:52How do we intentionally do something long term, plus pass it on, let somebody else know that you're using that
15:59product and how great it is?
16:00How do you pass it on as well?
16:02That's sustainability within our community.
16:05They make sure that this brand stays open, stays running, and the message is being spread.
16:11So with that, we're not wrapping.
16:14We're going to put you out of work now.
16:15Do y'all have your notebooks yet?
16:18Paper?
16:21Did y'all get this notebook yet?
16:24We're going to do an audit, y'all.
16:26We want to know where you stand.
16:27We want you to know where you stand.
16:29They don't have it.
16:30So you're going to get a notebook, y'all, okay?
16:33And we're going to just start it.
16:34Before they even give them out, we're going to just start the audit and keep this rolling, okay?
16:39So this audit is called Beyond Buying Black, Building Everyday Habits, right?
16:43We want to build our habits that we just talked about in order to make sure that we're staying on
16:48track to making sure our businesses are moving beyond.
16:52We don't want us to close.
16:54It has to move beyond just that statement of we bought black once this year, once for Essence Weekend, and
17:01then it ended.
17:02You know, I love what my sister here said about sustainability.
17:06Everybody say subscribe.
17:08Subscribe.
17:09Everybody say subscribe.
17:11Subscribe.
17:11We must subscribe to the businesses so they can be sustainable.
17:15So for instance, at Lameek, we launched the Lameek Society where our customers subscribe, and it launches this August, next
17:22month, where they'll get products every three months.
17:25Certain things will happen, but they subscribe.
17:27So it's almost like you're subscribing to the fact that now I'm going to stay in, right?
17:32So like Sydney, when Sydney's everywhere, she's one of our Lameek Society members.
17:36She has subscribed to make sure our business is sustainable.
17:40And so if you have a product that you like, go to their website.
17:44A lot of them have their subscription, right?
17:46Right.
17:46And so you keep up with that.
17:48And like you said, make a good review.
17:51You know, happy people never make reviews.
17:53Do you know that?
17:55Happy people just go along their way.
17:56They get their good product.
17:58They go home.
17:59They good.
17:59But you know what happened with upset people?
18:01What they do?
18:03They get loud.
18:04They go on Facebook with their 20 friends, and they cut up.
18:08You hear me?
18:08Right.
18:09Right.
18:09And so how do we, like, having a good review, giving someone five stars, right?
18:15Like doing those things, those small things.
18:18You might think it's small, but it makes a big difference to the company.
18:22Okay?
18:22And I'm going to tell you, this is just for me.
18:25I'm going to tell you, this is just a Kim thing.
18:27But Kim don't return products she get from black-owned businesses.
18:31I'm going to give it to my cousin.
18:33I'm going to give it to my homegirl.
18:34I'm going to give it to my daddy.
18:35I'm going to give it to somebody.
18:37But I don't take that back, right?
18:40Because I know from a P&L statement that this has already been spent, okay?
18:46Right.
18:47And so I just don't do that.
18:48That's just, like, my own little, back to your point, like, relationship that I do.
18:53So I just want us to think about little things that we do.
18:56Stop treating the business owner like you don't know them.
19:00You do know them.
19:01We all from Alabama, okay?
19:03Like, you know these people.
19:05We're cousins.
19:06We're cousins.
19:08So don't treat the people like you don't know them.
19:11We are a community.
19:12We are a village.
19:14And we must stand with each other.
19:17Absolutely.
19:17And so having that attitude like that, certain things that you just don't do to that business,
19:22because we're family.
19:24We can look out for each other.
19:26Okay?
19:27Yeah.
19:27Kim, I love what you said, Kim, because we've got to tell the stories.
19:30We have to tell our own narratives, right?
19:33And we don't always do that.
19:35Again, sometimes when it's not the most, you know, pleasant story.
19:39But we've got to be able to tell those stories of the things that we're doing and our why
19:43and the purpose behind it.
19:44Every one of us up here has a why as to why we started our businesses.
19:48Absolutely.
19:48Right?
19:48So we want to not only be able to tell that story, but we would love for others to tell
19:52that story as well, because our lens is not going to be your lens.
19:56And so those stories need to be told, and it needs to be told through our lens.
20:00So, all right.
20:01Thank you all so much.
20:02I think everybody has their note, but we're going to dive into it.
20:05So when you start your day, y'all, this is all products and services that you may use
20:10to start your day.
20:11Add a check if those are regularly black-owned.
20:14And so, Kim, I want you to answer this for me.
20:16Beauty and self-care are often daily rituals.
20:18Why do those everyday choices matter more than you realize?
20:22Yeah, because that's how you start your day, right?
20:24That's when you're talking to yourself in the mirror, when you do your skin care and all
20:28of that.
20:29So, like, I do my own audit.
20:31Like, on my bathroom counter, I have the products I use.
20:34The deodorant I use is Play Pits, right, by Chantel.
20:38Black woman in Atlanta doing amazing work.
20:41She got caught up in the Target boycott.
20:43You need to make sure that you go to her website and buy the product, because she took
20:46a hit last year.
20:47But I order her deodorant, and I have it on subscription.
20:51So then when I use my toothpaste, I use Neva.
20:54And then, like, for my toothbrush, I can tell you so many brands that I use that are black-owned.
21:02So I want you to do your research, and you start your day with these brands, okay?
21:07Your body wash, all of these things.
21:09Raise your hand if you have any kind of black-owned brand in your makeup or skin care or something
21:15like that.
21:16Good job.
21:16And that's being intentional.
21:18Good job.
21:18You're being intentional with it.
21:19Good job.
21:20So make sure you do that.
21:22We use the toilet paper all the time.
21:24Where can you subscribe?
21:25That's something that you're going to use a lot.
21:27So think about those things.
21:29All right.
21:29We're going to go on to our number two for our grocery run.
21:32Where do you buy your fresh produce from weekly?
21:35Your food.
21:36In Tulsa, I buy it at Oasis Fresh Market.
21:39It's owned by AJ.
21:40It's a black-owned grocery store in Tulsa.
21:42I live in Black Wall Street right now.
21:44I'm from Houston, but I live in Tulsa, and I buy from Oasis.
21:48And how about you?
21:48Where do you buy your groceries from?
21:49And y'all need to be checking off, too.
21:51Do you have a space that you can go to to support black-owned grocery stores?
21:56Even if you have to travel a bit?
21:58I was just going to say, I think, you know, it's so cool that we right now have so many
22:02different farmer markets that are popping up everywhere.
22:05You know, check.
22:06There's always somewhere that you can, they'll list the different places that they're going to be on Saturday mornings.
22:11That's something that's really, really important.
22:13So from a sustainability perspective.
22:16And y'all, we had six more, but we got to wrap it up.
22:19But with that in mind, you're able to think about your everyday habits, what you do, and just think, be
22:24more intentional about the lifestyle and the habits that we're making.
22:27What our children are seeing, grandchildren, family members.
22:31Spread the word when you do find a good company that others can support as well.
22:35Subscribe.
22:37That's another way that you're able to support, stay abreast of what the new things are coming.
22:41Do y'all want to share your websites right quick so that folks can, all right, share it.
22:46Let's fire, rapid fire.
