00:00Pleased were you with the way you were able to finish that game off
00:03from a game that ebbed and flowed quite a lot?
00:06Yeah, very pleased.
00:08There's nothing sweeter as a batter than walking off with a win,
00:12not out, walking in, shaking the boys' hands.
00:15So, yeah, very pleasing.
00:17And like you said, that game did ebbed and flowed.
00:20They started well, we pulled it back, and then they had a strong finish.
00:24And then those two wickets at the start,
00:26the momentum was firmly against us,
00:28but I thought Harry, you know, Brookie played unbelievably there
00:30to swing it back in our favour, took a big chunk out of that total.
00:34So, yeah, it was then down to just being pretty smart
00:38with using the big side and the small side.
00:40And then, yeah, I thought everyone did that pretty well.
00:42You know, Bantz and me had a nice partnership there.
00:45So, yeah, pretty pleasing all in all.
00:47You personally didn't start in a big blaze of attacking shots.
00:51You sort of, I guess you were hanging in and waiting for your moment.
00:54How did you choose it and pick it?
00:56Obviously, the no balls helped.
00:57Yeah, definitely.
00:58I think, you know, like I said, Brookie kind of,
01:01I was going to probably take a few more risks
01:03if Brookie didn't get off to the flyer that he did.
01:06But, you know, he allowed me to just almost be that person there
01:09just anchoring away.
01:12And, yeah, I tried to, you know, kick on a bit more
01:16before that big over.
01:17But, yeah, those two free hits definitely, you know,
01:19opened the door massively for a big, big one.
01:22And when Joffre came out, did he just say,
01:24leave it to me, I've got this?
01:27Joffre was, yeah, Joffre was ice cold.
01:29You know, he doesn't say a whole lot.
01:31We've got a kind of mutual understanding.
01:33You just nod and go, yeah, all good.
01:35Watch the ball.
01:35And he goes, yeah, cool.
01:37But, yeah, he was ice cold in that moment.
01:39You know, when they bring the fielders up
01:41to try and keep him on strike,
01:42he had the clarity to, you know, hit it in the gap.
01:44So, you know, it was unreal to see.
01:46And, yeah, it was sweet to finish it off with him.
01:49I just wonder, it's not long ago since you were the young thing
01:52looking at Suri Vanshi on the opposition.
01:54You're the old veteran now.
01:56This can't happen to you very often before.
01:58Oh, yeah.
01:59It feels weird to say that I'm playing against someone
02:01seven years younger than me.
02:04But, yeah, you know, I've watched him back in India.
02:06I've watched him, you know, today.
02:08The swing and everything is pure.
02:10So, yeah, he's an unbelievable talent.
02:14Hi, Jacob.
02:15When you pick your moment,
02:17and obviously it's that over that you went,
02:19what is the key?
02:20What are you looking for
02:21and what are you doing to try and maximise that?
02:25I think the key for me, you know,
02:27the free hits is actually quite a weird thing.
02:30You know, sometimes you get sucked into swinging too hard
02:33and, you know, you end up chunking it to mid-wicket for one
02:35and you go, well, that was pointless.
02:37But, yeah, the main thing I was trying to do
02:40was just stay as still as possible.
02:41You know, the old clichés, watch the ball, strong base.
02:44But, you know, those two things definitely give you
02:46the best chance to hit in the middle.
02:48You put a good swing on it and it sails.
02:50So, yeah, that was kind of the thought process
02:52for the free hits.
02:53And then the other ones were more just
02:55if he over pitches, get him straight.
02:57If he drags his length, get him in the gap to the big side.
03:00So, yeah, try to keep it as simple as that
03:02and thankfully it paid off.
03:04You sort of racking up these sort of amazing knocks
03:07is when it goes well for you,
03:09you sort of, it's match winning
03:10or it's big like this, unbeaten.
03:14What's the sort of key for you going forward?
03:16Is it sort of turning those more consistent
03:18or is it sort of always being the guy
03:20that can do that for your team?
03:23Yeah, I definitely like to be more consistent.
03:26You know, every game I play,
03:27I learn a lot about, you know, opposition, myself.
03:31And, you know, every game I try and, you know,
03:34take it in as a building block into the next one.
03:37And, yeah, like you said just then,
03:39definitely I'm striving to be a consistent match winner.
03:43You know, you might not always have the 80 knockouts,
03:47the big, big scores.
03:49But, you know, in T20 cricket,
03:50a lot of cameos actually win your games
03:53but don't get the headlines.
03:54So, in terms of, you know, being more consistent,
03:56I'm definitely looking to do that.
03:59Could you just tell us about your mindset of one for two?
04:02Were you scrambling to get pads on?
04:05No, T20, you're down in the dugout.
04:07So, I was pretty calm, you know.
04:09Brookie went out there.
04:10I said, you know, go ahead.
04:12And I was out there a couple of balls later.
04:15You know, Josh was unlucky.
04:17But, yeah, it's a weird feeling, you know,
04:19going out two down for not many.
04:21But, yeah, I've said it before.
04:24Just then, you know, Brookie played that situation unbelievably.
04:27And just to throw forward to the 50-over part of this series
04:30where you're opening the batting,
04:31are you looking forward to that challenge?
04:33Yeah, definitely.
04:35I'm definitely looking forward to batting with Ducky.
04:38He's, every time I batted with him, you know,
04:40and we've had a partnership,
04:41we bounce really well off each other
04:42in terms of the way we score.
04:45I know we're both left-handers,
04:46but we score in pretty different areas.
04:47So, I think if we can get that going,
04:49it will be a really strong partnership.
04:52But, yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
04:53You know, I've never opened a batting in 50-over cricket,
04:56but, you know, I can take kind of different aspects,
05:00you know, a bit from my Red Bull game,
05:02a bit from the T20,
05:02and hopefully mould it into quite a good template.
05:04So, yeah, definitely looking forward to it.
05:10Just on losing those too early wickets,
05:11what does it say about England and this team,
05:15that from such a terrible start
05:18against the best T20 team in the world,
05:20you have the batting depth and the confidence
05:23to do what you did?
05:25Yeah, it says a lot.
05:26I think, you know, take it back to the World Cup
05:29where we actually, you know,
05:31found ourselves in those positions a lot
05:33and was able to scrap, you know,
05:35Jaxi, having him come in at seven
05:37gives our whole batting line-up a huge amount
05:39of confidence that we can take the game on
05:41and do special things like today.
05:44But, yeah, it's just another, you know,
05:46notch in the right direction
05:47in terms of confidence for us as a batting group.
05:50I think, yeah, we don't look at the scoreboard
05:54too much and worry in those situations
05:57when you know you have, you know,
05:59the depth of Samba in six, Jaxi seven,
06:01and even Joff, you know, he and everyone,
06:03you know, coming in after that,
06:04they can do a job.
06:06So, yeah, I think it's just another step
06:09in the right direction for this batting group.
06:10You talk about going back to the World Cup.
06:12In that semi-final, you scored a brilliant century
06:14but for nothing in the end.
06:16And it felt like when Will Jaxi got out in that game,
06:19that was kind of the end of it.
06:22When Will got out here,
06:24it kind of felt like that again
06:25didn't work out that way.
06:27Yeah, I think,
06:30I'll try and answer the question now, I think.
06:33Yeah, Jaxi is playing a different role
06:36to what he's, you know, played for a long time.
06:38That role is hard, you know.
06:41He'd take it back to the World Cup.
06:42He did unbelievably for the whole time.
06:44And, you know, even in that semi-final,
06:45he was going unbelievably well.
06:49And when he got out,
06:50the step was just one too far.
06:51But it makes a big difference chasing 250
06:54compared to, you know, 190.
06:55So I think, you know, to answer your question,
06:57that would have been the difference.
06:59My question was actually also about that World Cup,
07:02that game,
07:03but actually your innings.
07:04In that game in Mumbai,
07:07the terms were dictated to you.
07:09You have to go from ball one.
07:11There's no other choice.
07:12Today, you sort of sat in behind Brookie.
07:14You mentioned Brookie a couple of times.
07:15And you kind of made the innings feel a bit longer,
07:18if you know what I mean.
07:18Like you gave a bit of air to the innings.
07:20It seemed you were quite calm.
07:22Can you sort of talk about keeping calm
07:24through that period?
07:26Yeah, I think, you know,
07:28to go back to the question I've answered before,
07:30you know, in terms of consistency
07:32and stuff like that,
07:33you become more consistent
07:34when you're just playing a situation.
07:36Like you said,
07:37the World Cup was a completely,
07:38you know, complete anomaly.
07:40You don't chase 250 very much.
07:43So, yeah,
07:44that situation was dictated in a different way.
07:47You know,
07:47that you go in hell for leather from ball one.
07:49And then today,
07:51it was just about,
07:51you know,
07:51there was times where I wanted to,
07:53you know,
07:55it crosses your mind to,
07:56should I try and hit this Wolf 6?
07:58You know,
07:58well,
07:58he's at the top of his mark.
07:59But you go,
08:00no,
08:00like,
08:01give yourself a bit of a chance.
08:03And,
08:03yeah,
08:04and then you kind of stumble upon the moment
08:07in the game
08:08that you can really hammer it home.
08:09So,
08:10yeah,
08:10I think it's just about
08:11being really clear,
08:13have that,
08:13have that good dialogue
08:15within you and your partner
08:16to just kind of bring each other back
08:19when you're feeling itchy.
08:20And,
08:21you know,
08:2120 overs,
08:22as short as it seems,
08:23is actually quite a,
08:25quite a chunky bit
08:26in that middle period
08:26where,
08:27you know,
08:27it can go one of two ways.
08:29And you mentioned it before,
08:30you have had many good innings now
08:32for England,
08:32but that one is significant
08:33in getting the team over the line
08:35to a victory.
08:36Does that,
08:36does that sort of feel a bit different?
08:38Yeah,
08:38this one,
08:40I'd actually put it up,
08:41like,
08:42close to the top,
08:43you know,
08:44I've scored a few hundreds,
08:46but only one of them
08:47was in a winning cause,
08:48you know,
08:48we lost in Australia,
08:50we lost in India.
08:51So,
08:51both of those games,
08:52you know,
08:53you're kind of looking going,
08:54well,
08:54more,
08:55like,
08:55I need to do more.
08:56Whereas,
08:56today,
08:57I'm,
08:57I'm all smiles,
08:58you know,
08:58we've gone one enough in the series,
09:01there's a few scars against India,
09:03so it's nice to,
09:04you know,
09:04get one up on them.
09:05And,
09:05and yeah,
09:06it's just a lot of confidence
09:07going into the last three games.
09:08finish up at the back.
09:11Hi,
09:12Jacob,
09:12incredible innings,
09:13you couldn't finish it off
09:14in the semifinals,
09:15today you did.
09:16Just wanted to know,
09:17you just answered,
09:24you just answered about,
09:26you know,
09:26how you control the innings,
09:28but was there a particular bowler
09:29that you had in mind
09:31that you wanted to target
09:32or it just came to a point
09:33where you just had to go,
09:35you know,
09:36it was 12 runs per hour,
09:38was there a particular bowler
09:39that you wanted to target?
09:41There wasn't a particular bowler,
09:43you know,
09:43the spinners,
09:44I was definitely trying
09:45to put pressure on,
09:46but I thought they,
09:48you know,
09:48Agstar in particular
09:49bowled really well
09:50to that long side,
09:51making it really hard
09:52to hit boundaries off him.
09:54And then the two leggies,
09:56you know,
09:56I was definitely trying
09:57to be a bit more aggressive
09:58towards them,
09:59but I thought they actually
10:00shut it down pretty well
10:01up until that,
10:02that last over of spin
10:04that was bowled.
10:05So, yeah,
10:05it was just about
10:06picking that moment
10:07and, you know,
10:08moments won't come,
10:09you know,
10:11easier than that in a way
10:12when you get two free hits,
10:13you know,
10:14that's kind of your cue
10:15to go.
10:16So, yeah,
10:17I probably would have tried
10:18to put the foot down
10:21in that over anyway,
10:22but, you know,
10:22the moment was kind of
10:23presented itself naturally.
10:25Cool.
10:25Thanks, everyone.
10:27Cheers.
