00:00Today, I'll tell you why California's own Kamala Harris might be making a huge mistake
00:04as she positions herself for a likely presidential run in 2028.
00:08Harris believes that she had an impossible task in 2024, that she was only given just
00:14over 100 days to run for president, and therefore she deserves another crack at the job.
00:18She is courting Mamdani because he has a huge amount of political momentum.
00:24He's only been in office as the mayor of New York City for a few months,
00:27but as a Democratic Socialist, he is driving change within the Democratic Party,
00:31and he is endorsing primary challengers who are taking out seasoned incumbents,
00:35including some rather left-wing ones.
00:37So Kamala Harris is trying to develop a public relationship with Mamdani
00:41so that she can take some of that energy into her own campaign.
00:45The problem is, even though Socialists are good at beating Democrats,
00:48we don't know if Socialists who win the Democratic nomination can beat Republicans.
00:52We haven't seen a Socialist versus Republican head-to-head match in any of these swing districts
00:58yet, and it might hurt Democrats significantly as they approach a midterm election that they
01:03really ought to win.
01:05If Harris ties her brand to Mamdani's socialism too soon, and socialism takes the Democratic
01:11Party over the political edge, back into minority status, then she will have moved to
01:16left to make a case that she could win a general election as president.
01:20So, while Mamdani might be flavor of the month, the flavor tends to expire after a bad election,
01:26which is also why the Democratic Party's own brand is not doing too well.
01:30It's lost twice to Donald Trump, and voters are taking out their frustrations by looking
01:33for alternatives.
01:34But Kamala Harris' best move might be to hang back and see where this Mamdani thing goes.
01:38Plus, there will be a lot of other people trying to do the same thing.
01:41Gavin Newsom is already moving further to the left.
01:43Kamala Harris should run as Kamala Harris.
01:46It's her best hope of winning the nomination again.
