00:10My name is Dr. Fahamu Paku, and this is Icarus.
00:14My new exhibition at the Montresto Art Foundation here in Marrakesh
00:18centers on a provocative question.
00:20If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree,
00:23it will live forever feeling inadequate.
00:25This quote from Albert Einstein resonated with me deeply.
00:30Particularly as it relates to the state of young Black men in the United States
00:35and really around the world, whereas Black people,
00:38we are often compared and measured against standards
00:41that were never meant to affirm us in the first place.
00:44And so I began to correlate these ideas with the story of Icarus.
00:49So throughout this exhibition, I used various metaphors and references to flight
00:55to talk about hopes, aspirations for Black people
00:59to see ourselves differently in the world
01:01and to move beyond comparisons that limit us
01:05but actually elevate us and push us beyond our imagination.
