00:15welcome back to another edition of new york got games your boy dexter henry alongside my guy brian
00:20fonseca here and what is probably not a happy day a eulogy for an episode yeah it's kind of
00:28gonna be that man it's kind of gonna be that because the knicks it's gonna be very interesting
00:34to hear about where they go from here we're gonna talk about this because mitchell robinson is moving
00:40on a lot of us expected this once we heard the talk from james dolan and others that the knicks
00:46were not going to exceed the second apron they brought back landry shambett i think there was
00:50some hope that maybe there was a change of heart maybe they would but mitchell robinson signs a
00:55three-year deal with the celtics 47 was it 47 and a half million dollars yeah full mid-level it
01:01looks
01:02like it's gonna be so once that happened non-taxpayer mid-level non-taxpayer mid-level it's important
01:07caveat the knicks could not have offered just so we could be clear here the knicks could not have
01:11offered this contract to mitchell robinson without exceeding the second apron there's no way they
01:17could have done that yeah if they weren't going to do it now like it like in reality just to
01:21outline
01:22it for people instead of costing 15 million next year it would have been a lot more and it would
01:26have hump hamstrung you in other ways because of the second apron penalties i know people aren't
01:30trying to hear that but they've been warning us and in turn we've warned y'all during the draft like
01:36we're not necessarily co-signing the strategy but this is what they're saying they're going to do
01:40and once you get landry shambett back let's also be clear on that this is what dolan said he was
01:46going to do yes i don't think the front office didn't clearly and what we've heard in some
01:49report and did not want to do is this is a dolan decision we asked stephan bondi not a surprise
01:53we
01:53this is a dolan decision and by the way this is while still getting landry shambett and jose alvarado
01:59for less than i thought they were going to get mohammed di war if you had him too yeah which
02:04do we have
02:05the final terms on that no we still not yeah so that one but those two in particular shambett and
02:10alvarado came back to new york for less and as this lingered for an extra day or so i was
02:16like hmm
02:16there's no noise about mr robinson like is he actually going to come back and then when i saw
02:20robert williams got 345 basically i was like oh no that's not he's gone like there's no way he's
02:26taking less than robert williams yeah and listen i've seen a lot of the talk on social media and
02:31knicks fans in their feelings some at the owner we'll get to that later uh knicks fans in field and
02:38listen it's does this sting a little bit because it's the celtics well that's the thing yeah it's like
02:43i've seen several knicks fans several maybe more say anybody but that team but i also i'm if i'm
02:52mr robinson i'm like man i might have a chance to start i'm going to be on the team that
02:56that wants
02:57to be a contender uh this is more money evidently than he would have gotten anywhere else right once
03:03the lakers were off the board getting walker kessler that kind of threw anybody else this is a
03:07business out of it it's a business business we talk about the business on both sides i am never
03:11going to fault the players for getting their bag and the limited shelf life that they have
03:17and so he did he wasn't going to take a significant pay cut landry shamit who did not have a
03:22non who had
03:23non-guaranteed deals the last couple of years and i had some injury history with the shoulder
03:27yes he got a little bummed but if you're going to ask mr robinson let's say to go from 15
03:31to 9
03:33no and none of y'all would have done that either like come on nope to be to be the
03:39backup again right
03:40that's the other thing like he it's him and the mias kata which by the way 48 minutes of one
03:47of
03:47those guys the entire time is going to be really a pain in the ass to play against for other
03:51teams
03:51but like that that's instead of backing up carl anthony towns where you're like no doubt the number
03:56two like he's going to have more opportunities here i don't know what's that going to look like
04:00because we don't know what this jalen brown situation is going to look like boston is still
04:03the betting favorite in the easter conference which i don't see how you get to that but i think
04:07mitchell robinson definitely makes them better and now the knicks have to sort of scramble to
04:12figure out this backup center uh position but but not scramble because they've been preparing for
04:17this like they've they've probably known that mitchell robinson wasn't gonna be back i think the
04:22knicks have been i think some people are gonna listen i'll use the word prepare some people gonna
04:26say well how can you say prepare brian they didn't draft the center last week i mean that's what the
04:32six second round picks are for that you acquired during during the draft which is also why i would pump
04:36the
04:36brakes on that yeah and why people and people should know this i keep saying it all the time like
04:42you've seen you have a track record with this front office now was the front office handcuffed by the
04:48owner here absolutely absolutely there's no they're not the only nba team by the way that happens yes
04:54yes right this is happening in denver this is happening in portland this is happening in other
04:58places as well and teams that some teams that are not even in or near the second apron
05:02they're handcuffed so this stuff happens but they were trying i think to be prudent to your point
05:09and get some more picks so they can maybe make another move i think what fans tend to do is
05:14when
05:14something like this happens they're like oh no this is what the roster is like it's july 1st
05:20it's july 1st for the time we're recording for agency hasn't gone 24 hours yeah some of y'all gotta
05:25calm
05:25down like just just breathe easy it's a loss it is a big loss in mitchell robinson what he brings
05:33to the table we'll get to that in a second but there are options here with what the knicks have
05:38with i know that the free agent market is limited and we'll get to that in a second we'll also
05:42get
05:42to trades but this is why they got second round picks i don't think the knicks were going into this
05:46once they had the mandate from the owner without a plan what have you seen in the last
05:52three four years that has told you leon rosen company has operated without a plan so if that's
05:56where you're going or your mind is going the anxiousness is creeping up no i'm not i don't
06:02know exactly what the plan is but this team has not operated as a front office without a plan and
06:06i
06:06think they've been thinking about this since the trade deadline because you and i know that they had
06:13interest in yves misi whose name will come up later they were talking about him in trying to acquire
06:18him with jose alvarado i don't want to be brian winderhurst on this but it's like why would
06:22they do that why would they be thinking about that they like a name that we've brought up by the
06:28way
06:28heading into the trade deadline like i was building deals because it seemed very logical at the time
06:33for reasons jose alvarado and eve misi what would that look like in a package and ultimately it ended
06:39up being just jose alvarado but you got to remember when nba teams also make these trades
06:45like you build relationships with certain front offices you could easily call back new orleans
06:50and their leadership and make another deal like this is kind of how this happens right maybe the
06:55price that it was then at the time was a little too rich for the knicks but sometimes in the
07:00words
07:00fat joe yesterday's price is not today's price right and sometimes you got to see what's happening
07:04so now you call back maybe the price is higher maybe it's lower it's probably higher because you
07:09don't have mr robertson and teams know that yeah they know you need a backup center you know what i
07:13mean
07:13they know you might be a little desperate is probably a strong word but they know that you
07:17have a need need yeah so and the pelicans are probably they probably want more draft capital
07:22because they haven't managed theirs the best in recent years and the knicks just got themselves
07:26some draft capital which goes back to what you were saying all right so mitchell robinson it's gone
07:31it's a tough day for knicks fans but i do want to talk about this because i do think that
07:36with the
07:36knicks coming off of a championship we have to talk about mitchell robinson's impact like three weeks ago
07:41or something like yeah three weeks ago on saturday you would think you like i know people are upset
07:47but the parade just happened like this did they just clean the confetti off but that's recently but
07:54that's people are going to say well that's part of why i'm upset the confetti just got cleaned off the
07:58streets and mr robinson is gone that's part of why they're upset this i mean this we talked about
08:03this like the fact that you're bringing almost everybody else back like usually when you win a title
08:08it's hard to keep the team together again i thought jose alvarado i thought he was coming back
08:13but if he had a true free agency and the market opened up and looking at some of these other
08:19deals
08:19i'm like jose could have gotten more than he got on the open market so i think you're being logical
08:24and looking at it and saying look at what jose got two guys that got hometown discount look at what
08:29alvarado got you got major discounts on those those are major wins for the knicks and then i also
08:35would add dor into that too shaman bringing him back and no shit shaman sorry i said alvarado
08:40shaman i meant dor my bad yeah you have all those guys those are major wins this is the uncomfortable
08:45truth that i think nobody wants to talk about in not just the second apron era but in salary cap
08:50sports
08:51you can't have it all yeah everybody wants it all but you can't have it all this is not baseball
08:57you can't have it all you can't just say oh whatever you know salary cap second eighth
09:02damn whether you agree with that from the ownership or not nobody can have it all forever
09:07that's the words i should put no you can have it all at some point nobody can have it all
09:11forever
09:12at some point you're not going to be able to have it all the celtics went through it before this
09:16season
09:17yeah other teams have had to do it they've been trying to duck the repeater tax as well teams are
09:22like okc's been selling off good players by the way aaron just this off so yeah to to get off
09:27the and
09:28they might work out a deal with lou door to shed more money cleveland's got some things to figure
09:31out maybe they'll have to part with like max truce and dennis schruder to try to dean wages left
09:36right like teams are going to be doing this and it like it's not the epl it is what it
09:41is and we are
09:42not advocating for billionaires to not spend money no to make their sports teams better to be clear
09:47if you watch the show you know we stand on things but at the same time it's just accepting with
09:53and
09:53dealing in the reality that they're not going into the second apron so with that there are other
09:58options to get a backup center who if you're looking at efficiency maybe you find somebody who's going
10:03to make a fourth or half of what mitchell robinson's going to make and maybe gives you 75 of the
10:11production and then you're looking at okay maybe that's how you have to skin this this time like the
10:15fact that you have a starting five you have mo diawar jose alvarado you have um uh landry sham it
10:21back
10:21as well deuce mcbride deuce mcbride you still have kolek and percom dadia for now
10:28carson's likely coming back from everything we hear like you're bringing back almost everybody
10:32else like this is a very integral part but like it's something you can figure out
10:36backup center i i happen to agree that has always been my feeling that that doesn't mean i'm devaluing
10:41mitch robinson and i do want to talk about mitch robinson because yeah he was the longest tenured
10:46nick before this he's seen it all he's seen that's right and mitch robinson
10:51posted this on ig he said life's a climb but the view is great new york nicks fans and a
10:55whole
10:55nicks organization the past eight years have been the highlight of my life i can't thank you guys
10:59enough for the journey and opportunities i know it's a lot of emotions going around trust me i feel
11:04it myself but i will always have love for where it all started i love you and will miss you
11:09once a
11:10nick always a nick like when i think about mitchell robinson and i think about what he meant to
11:19this team in the longest tenured nick and it would have been nice to see him spend a couple more
11:22years
11:23in the nick uniform you know it's crazy the lasting memory of mitch robinson for me is going to be
11:29the
11:29last time he touched the ball for the nicks in game five that offensive rebound he had of course off
11:34of
11:34josh's free throw how fitting that was the last time he touched the ball offensive rebound that he had
11:39the offensive rebound and kicked it out to landry shaman and then he swung and i forgot who got
11:45fouled at the top of the three the key that is so fitting for him because he embraced hustle and
11:52think about mitchell robinson when he first came to the nicks and he was trying to block everything
11:57and fouling and wearing 26 26 was ugly number yeah in basketball anyway yeah for basketball this anyway
12:04it's a good running back number yeah yeah i agree and then for him to to be the player he
12:09was we know
12:10the injury history but the impact that he had to winning the last couple years joe mazula who now
12:14will coach him knows damn well his impact because he was doing a hack of mitch now we get to
12:18watch
12:18mike brown hilariously probably do a hack of mitch we laughed about that earlier we talked about this
12:24like right when we were like yo mike brown's gonna do the hack of mitch in the playoffs i don't
12:28think
12:28it's lost i don't think it's gonna be lost upon anybody in the front office around the organization
12:32the team what mitchell robinson meant to the team and he should be saluted he was one of the guys
12:37i
12:38was happy to see at the parade um just really really enjoying it because of he had been through
12:46everything he had seen it all he had truly played with them all yeah we've talked we talked about
12:52guys that keep yeah word like we've we've made we've we've talked about all the nick punchlines
12:57the alonzo triers and noah vonle who actually really liked um you know the two games of wesley
13:03matthews that one year you know like and mario hazonia like he seen it all he went from there
13:09basically played through the entire rebuild if i'm not mistaken like 2018-19 like he was there
13:15pre-rj barrett pre-emmanuel quickly pre-obie top and pre all that stuff survived it all and different
13:22times like survive like other trade rumors in the past or other uh trade discussions like people
13:28wondering hey should you actually move him we've talked about it here over the last year because of
13:32how the injury sort of piled up and the money that he had and then to come out on the
13:37other side a
13:38champion and who was somebody very valuable to that championship like yeah he's gonna be one of the
13:43dudes 10-15 years from now you expect to be you know courtside during other nick playoff games
13:49oh and he's gonna get a huge he'll be a beloved nick yeah he's a beloved nick because i think
13:57a lot of
13:57people like myself will remember the last time he touched the ball yeah you will remember that you
14:02will remember that offensive rebound is just as big of a play as any of the plays we could talk
14:07about
14:07throughout this next postseason run yeah in 2026 so once people shake off the the fact that he's
14:13with the celtics which we have to see how that plays out but yeah it's gonna be weird it's gonna
14:17be
14:18weird to see him in the green and white yeah especially if i saw jonathan mackrey post this
14:22like opening night nick celtics and it's ring night likely i see that happening mr robinson's
14:27there get his ring yeah i guess it's great but he's wearing the celtic that's gonna be so weird
14:33well something else might happen ring night which which which we'll get we'll get to a little bit
14:37later that that could be interesting um but yeah we gotta we gotta salute mr robinson salute to
14:42mr robinson a great nick career um will be loved by fans i agree with you when he comes back
14:49to the garden when his playing days are over that man will always get a standing ovation um i mean
14:55everybody on this team he should get a video tribute also yes he will everybody on this team will um
15:00but
15:01second most blocks in nick's history after uh patrick that's new one distant second ain't nobody
15:05but yeah 690 yeah the impact impact on the knicks um undeniable you know you gotta look at him when
15:14you know you gotta say this last thing i'll say before we move on as a guy who's picked in
15:18the
15:18second round he's one of the knicks best draft picks and draft draft pick stories overall from just
15:25where he came raw out of high school yeah not playing a college ball yeah and then to become a
15:31champion in the way he did and be as impactful as he was on the court in limited minutes despite
15:37his
15:37health situation a lot of the times that is a hell of a story shooting yes free throw shooting that's
15:43a hell of a story to to be that integral as somebody who like you don't often see the guy
15:50who becomes a
15:50better defender by blocking fewer shots because he was chasing everything early on in his career
15:55became disciplined yeah and then eventually he was like i want to contest everything instead of just
15:59blocking everything but like still second most blocked shots in nick's history third and offensive
16:03rebounds which is just hilarious because he's not he's not in the top in rebounds i just checked
16:08but in offensive rebounds it's only yeah it's only oakley and ewing ahead of him oakley had 12 more
16:15than patrick ewing which i didn't know until i looked at that not not surprised about that actually
16:20a little bit just because of ewing's tenure but i get it because of the way oakley played also but
16:25yeah like just just off the charts in terms of impact at times and to be as good as he
16:31was
16:31uh productive as he was despite the limitations offensively despite the free throw shooting
16:38limitations despite the fact that to your point you couldn't play him that many minutes he was
16:41averaging sub 20 minutes the last couple years too but you also see like the fan reaction the reaction
16:48you guys have had and like that's how important he is that he's one of those dudes that we've talked
16:52about this with championship rosters like the role players become super integral because of the
16:58things that they add to this team and one of the nick's superpowers was you had car anthony towns
17:03and michael robinson not even a double big lineup together that they would go to a lot although that
17:07was in their back pocket but you had to see one of them dudes the entire time two really good
17:12rebounders
17:12like really high level rebounders um and now he's gonna be on a team where they're they're gonna they're
17:19gonna use him well i feel confident in saying that i'm curious to see how it is and i actually
17:23think
17:23it's gonna be it's gonna be pretty fun um but you know he'll be a south and am i trying
17:29to word
17:30fun you know around this it won't be well from a back just from a basketball viewership standpoint
17:35your basketball viewership i just i still need to see what they do with jaylen brown and then you
17:39have uh you know ariel huck porty going to the sixers not going to get the same level of eulogy
17:44but
17:44i think that's that kind of ties into no it does tie it ties into where we want to go
17:49next because
17:49you know you'd have thought okay michael robinson's leaving maybe you sign huck as your backup center
17:53um he steps into that role the week had some trepidation about him we were less optimistic
17:59after the season than we were before the season yeah it was a little bit and even i had jeremy
18:04cohen on with me the other day from nicks film school and he had a little bit of trepidation about
18:07huck stepping into that role so now the question becomes okay how do nicks replace mitcher robinson
18:13what are the options to replace mitcher robinson there's a couple ways you can do this right
18:17it's either do free agency um and when you look at the free agent options you're gonna have
18:21guys like i i got a couple i got like six guys here kevon looney nick richards you said
18:30andre andre drummond i like kevon looney some of these names is not but like more a couple years
18:37ago than currently marvin bagley the third i've seen nick richards and marvin bagley the third come
18:43up um alex from uh nicks fan tv because we talked about this on twitter a little bit he had
18:49brought
18:49up uh nick richards i had brought up who we've been championing uh eve misi we'll get to that in
18:56a
18:57kelly o kelly o lenick no he can't he can't just throw the name it's over for it's he wasn't
19:04playing on the spurs last one more guy for you larry nance jr small ball center more so but very
19:12high
19:13iq the issue with larry nance jr is also the injuries health constant injuries can give you good minutes
19:19but also health i think the three if you take three of those six i think the maybe more likely
19:25options
19:25we're talking about the nick signing in terms of free agents kevon looney there are some others
19:29andre drummond you got more names for me none of these names are going to be aspiring no
19:33you mentioned andre drummond i did mention andre drummond that's a name that i think will be sexy
19:37to some people as sexy as it can be just because of what you remember him being it's not yet
19:44you guys
19:44remember the second round of the playoffs we said we were like oh they just don't have any centers um
19:49no dwight powell it's another one it gets bleak here really fast the mac as bomani jones calls him
19:59bis mac fiambo who also couldn't get on the floor for the spurs nope uh kevin love who does not
20:03really
20:04play anymore no you know xavier tillman it's just it's not great so i think that the the trading
20:11like if it were me personally i i would i would probably prefer to just trade for somebody unless
20:16you'd think like they could they could still sign two bigs bagley is kind of interesting but i don't
20:25i don't yeah i'm kind of with you i would rather he's been under the radar like not bad the
20:30last
20:30couple not terrible last couple years but very under the radar because his teams haven't mattered
20:34a ton two years ago the name of this list that i would have said oh yeah i was talking
20:40about the
20:40knicks maybe flipping mitch robinson for him with a funny but his stock has fallen is nick richards
20:44yeah i still think he's the best option of the people on this charlotte's been good at punting
20:49on centers nick richards mark williams yeah and sending him to phoenix and then things that's
20:57right that's true but i i would i i would if i had to sign someone from that group it
21:05would be nick
21:06richards if you absolutely had to if i had to if i'm not i'm gonna get to we're gonna get
21:10to the
21:10trade i think i'm with you i also like he'd be the number one of the it's not again not
21:14a great
21:14list folks but if i had to take number one off that list i'm going nick richards because just i
21:18think if you could get him into your system maybe you can rehabilitate some bad habits that he's shown
21:24and get him right just the way you're talking about well some people will be depressed i'm talking
21:29about nick richards and andre drummond and i've thrown out i've thrown out the name of new yorker
21:36moses brown in the past i don't know if he can give you 10 12 minutes but i go nick
21:42richards over here
21:43i probably i mean technically new yorker also if i'm not mistaken nick richards technically he's
21:50from i know he's jamaican but we do need some more caribbean brothers didn't he spend yeah didn't
21:56he spend some time in uh in new york at one point i wanted to say i have no idea
22:01make that up
22:03i have no i have no idea his andre he was born he was born there you go uh he
22:08was uh
22:09saint mary's okay just saint mary's and then he went to patrick school in jersey so yeah yeah i
22:14remember he spent some time in new york i remember seeing on one of the recruiting sites that he was
22:18he was on the next radar for some time but again like his value has dropped his value is not
22:23what it
22:23used to be yeah that tends to happen when you end up with the bulls look
22:29the free the free agent crop is not great right so i get it some next fans gonna see that
22:34and
22:34panic i think there's a way in which they could go the free agent route maybe for one signing i
22:40still
22:40do expect jordan clarkson to be back because just a bigger guard who can help you with some ball
22:46handling who can play a variety of different roles i do expect that um they could sign two guys
22:52here but there also is the other part the trade market right could you flip there's some tradable
22:58contracts on the team could it be colic could it be dottie could be deuce those are the three can
23:04you
23:04combine them with some second round picks i know people don't want to hear the deuce one but it's a
23:09name that will be brought up because he has an expiring 3.9 million and are the knicks going to
23:16extend him he's he's not a guarantee it's not a guarantee and if you i know people aren't gonna like
23:21it
23:21but because of the expiring and because of what he can give you and he's on one of the best
23:24contracts
23:25in the nba he is your best trade ship off the bench there's no doubt he's the best trade ship
23:30that you have right now other than d or obviously right but you're not trading but you're not right
23:34you're not doing that right that's that's your i mean you want him to be your sixth man d or
23:37this
23:38year maybe then i think he will have an expanded role more minutes we'll get to more of that at
23:42another time but when you're talking about the trade market you're going to talk about eves mc who we
23:46mentioned from new wallings you maybe you give them a call i have a feeling the knicks have
23:51kicked that the tires on that that's just me i'm not reporting anything i just have a feeling
23:55they've kicked the tires on that they've been on that the other names you've heard brought up
24:00musa diabate from the hornets here's the problem though with musa diabate i don't that would
24:06shock me here's the problem though fans are gonna say and i like musa diabate i know you're a big
24:11fan
24:11of him so am i i love him the problem is you'll be right back in the same situation next
24:17year
24:17because he's going to be looking for money as a free agent so you're going to be right in the
24:22same spot you were with mitch ideally what you want if you're going to trade for a center a young
24:27center is somebody that is on a multi-year deal somebody you can get a couple years out of on
24:32the contract that's why eves eves mc is such a great option another charlotte big ryan kalkbrenner
24:39also i talked about this as well with jeremy cohen we talked about diabate we talked about kalkbrenner
24:45and one of the things jeremy brought up to me that i was not aware of is that ryan kalkbrenner
24:50who i like too and can give you a little bit of outside shooting ryan kalkbrenner may
24:55can that i wouldn't bank on it right but you can't it spots he gives you a little bit more
25:01offensively than mitch i think that's what i should have said he has he has good hands he's a really
25:06good finisher around the rim and good contestant he's he was third in the league in contested rebound
25:11percentage now i'll say this much about ryan kalkbrenner when the hornets made a switch at
25:17center and went to musa diavante it's changed that's when they kind of took off but the problem
25:23is you're asking for him to be a backup center in the role he's now the hornets now have a
25:27glut of
25:27bigs um well because they drafted hannis steinbach in the first round who i don't think he'll start
25:34right away and if you're if you're charlotte you should probably just keep musa and sign musa
25:40after this year and just make him the starting center assuming he could do what he did last year
25:44again because you you're giving him like all defense consideration based on last season that's why
25:48i'm like that's a little pie in the sky for me to to then get him as a backup center
25:52but kalkbrenner is
25:54interesting because he would have three years of team control left if i'm not mistaken or two hold on
26:00he was a second round pick so this should get funky no it's three more it's three okay so it's
26:04this
26:04year and then two more after this so it's three more technically uh because he has a four year
26:0810 million dollar contract uh the last year as a team option so yeah well he was one of the
26:13first
26:13second round picks that's why you know you give him a deal like that because they got him and see
26:17on james right i think back to back or more or less um that's an interesting one because the hornets
26:23low-key with all the shuffling they did with the lamello ball and miles bridges trades they have like
26:28a lot of good players that they got to figure out how to play like there's going to be a
26:32couple
26:32guys on the outside looking in in that rotation and kalkbrenner i don't know if he's going to be one
26:36of
26:36them but if diabate just started a bunch of games for you and you got heinous steinbach like this is
26:42how the knicks have to be now you have naz reed yeah right and now you have naz reed as
26:45a four
26:46you still have grant williams who's like kind of leadership guy there for better or for worse
26:52uh but did play a valuable role in that locker room so now is kalkbrenner going to be the odd
26:57one
26:57out there now he gave them pretty good minutes last year but he was much better served as a backup
27:02than a starter which if you're the knicks that's what you need and this is why you get those six
27:07second round picks on draft night like i think they did that knowing in order to make some of
27:11these trades and charlotte has the second most first round picks like moving forward right now
27:17at the disposal i think okc is still first but they're not opposed to getting more draft capital
27:23and new orleans needs it so me see kalkbrenner i think are two more interesting younger names that you
27:29could probably get i agree uh because me see has two years of team control he has one he has
27:33this
27:34one coming up and then one more after at like north of five million and these are all things people
27:38have
27:38to consider because cat's gonna get his extension brunson's gonna get his a little more down the
27:43line heart you have a decision on josh hart too so if you're gonna keep this thing together like you
27:47just you can't keep everybody you know this is why deuce mcbride's name is gonna come up and then if
27:52you're if you're tyler kolek if you're looking at tyler kolek as a potential trade ship that kind of
27:57makes sense because where's he gonna play this year because now you're entering the season with
28:01brunson and alvarado on the roster and you still have deuce and you still have sham it like where's
28:06kolek gonna get minutes from if like even if we're acknowledging he probably deserves it because he
28:12showed enough flashes last year to continue to see your point is try to use his contract if you can
28:16now yeah listen all those things about kolek and second round picks can get you a backup center
28:21probably i think i think the best case scenario for the knicks right now is they sign one of those
28:27names maybe they sign like a nick richards and they also trade for either eves mc and ryan kogbrenner
28:35and if those it's probably a little bit more likely on the eves mc part or there's trade for one
28:40and then
28:41they use i don't know somebody that doesn't convert to a second round pick they can also figure out
28:49the center stuff at the debt at the trade deadline there's a way they could do that they might just
28:54sign one guy for a low cost like a nick richards and then say okay we'll see where we are
28:59we'll
29:00we'll see we'll have this guy nick let's say nick richards is the backup let's just throw that out
29:04there yeah and then you might want a veteran there if you're trying to put another right you got a
29:08veteran here we'll see how the backup five thing is going through the season i know everybody always
29:13wants everything set in stone before opening night but again we've watched for many years that
29:17doesn't matter the knicks didn't have their backup point guard situation set in stone on opening
29:22night last year and then they got jose alvarado right which is why you can't always worry about how
29:26it's not about how you start it's about how you finish who started the first preseason game last
29:30year and i'm a dave at forward to calm down here i forgot by the way Malcolm brogdon was the
29:38backup point guard then he quit he just retired like he's like you know what i'm good or not to
29:44this happen i think because of injury but become daddy and stephan bondi brought this up with us
29:47a couple when we were doing the live draft show in the second round he was like yo become daddy
29:52started opening night a couple years ago and the knicks are still supposedly from everything i hear
29:56and others have heard high on become daddy that doesn't mean they won't trade become daddy but
30:00they're high enough my point being is and speaking of centers trey jameson played first game of the
30:04season last year it's true so my point being don't get too crazy about exactly what the roster is by
30:12opening night or by the time we even get to training camp don't get crazy about that if if nick
30:18richards
30:18works out as a backup there's a world well let's say they sign nick richards i'm just putting this
30:21out as a hypothetical there's a world in which you can say man this nick richards thing looks good
30:26we're okay right or you can then look to upgrade if you leave yourself enough room for flexibility
30:32particularly if you're staying under the second apron so there's a world in which they could do
30:36that and it could be fine for them but you just have to let this process play out i know
30:40nobody has
30:41patience i would prefer just me personally i would prefer if they went and traded for like a eves mesey
30:49or ryan kockbrenner mesey is the the one for for me it would be number one on my list and
30:54i probably
30:54have kockbrenner too i agree is is what i would what i would have have have out there they could
30:59sign
30:59two low cost centers plus jordan clarkson right at whatever that could be nick richards somebody
31:05else they could do that as well too and they have enough money to do that and fit under the
31:09second
31:09apron and they can use the future seconds that they got and also you should note in the last trade
31:17that they made which i didn't like at the 53rd pick they got cash you can use that cash
31:25for somebody that they can then maybe use because they want to buy a pick or something down the road
31:29so you can use both of those things in the trade i i have wondered and jeremy cohen brought this
31:34up to
31:35me in a conversation we had offline but it's like why did they get why did they get the cash
31:40there
31:40maybe it is to use in another maybe look this team has been really good about options for flexibility
31:47and just trying to exhaust like all the different avenues like clearly they've thought about this it
31:52wouldn't surprise me if before we finish which is why we should finish if something just happens and
31:56then it just nukes the episode but like and just looking at these two guys we're talking about also
32:00with misi and with kulk brenner if you're looking at using trade chips like that i know people don't
32:08want to necessarily give up on kolek or or whatever but ultimately if you have two other point guards in
32:15front of him that that's not somebody that you should be married to keeping like it just kind of is
32:20what
32:20it is like he showed flashes this is the type of guy that on this type of team you need
32:25to use as
32:25a trade chip if you're not going to just play him consistently because somebody else will probably
32:29want him so i would look at a charlotte and say hey you have kobe white you have christian anderson
32:33who you drafted but maybe they're in the market for a nut for a third point guard uh in a
32:39in a similar
32:40but not the same situation because they don't have a jalen brunson and jose alvarado who's going to
32:44command minutes like christian anderson has to earn his way he's a first round pick we have to see if
32:48he's good i think he'll be pretty good but we'll see we'll see kobe white's gonna start yeah kobe
32:52white's gonna start this year their third point guard right now is trey man whose contract they
32:56probably want off of now that that has nothing i'm not saying the knicks should get trey man that's
33:00not no i'm saying in a separate deal they probably want to get off of him anyway so then kolek
33:04would
33:05slot in and then it becomes a kolek and whatever second round picks for kulk brenner and that may sound
33:10crazy like oh why would charlotte get second round picks also but you're getting an extra year of team
33:15control and you're getting somebody who has been better like was better last year and it keeps you
33:20and even if you have to flip that it's not all six second round picks no but you just the
33:24knicks
33:25then you brought it up the knicks have been good at keeping their flexibility and what i think fans
33:30have to understand is by not exceeding the second apron whether you liked it or not in terms of
33:36bringing mitchell robinson back it allows them to have more flexibility during this coming season
33:41so we could do things like we talked about which is make a trade a deadline maybe pick up a
33:45buyout
33:46candidate if they're able to shed some other salary to do that not that buyout candidates are ever
33:50something i think you should bank on i wouldn't do that but it's just an option that i'm putting out
33:55there i do think people have to understand that in this era of the nba flexibility is very very very
34:04valuable right it's you can argue it's the most valuable thing you can do when you get to
34:11championship contention level can you maintain the flexibility that's why okc as dope as they have
34:17been and as dope as their roster building has been and all the drafting they're trying to maintain a
34:22certain level of flexibility because you can't have everything in a salary cap sport especially one
34:28that has a soft hard cap you can't have it all it's just not going to happen right it's just
34:33not
34:33going to happen with that i'm going to throw one more name at you before we wrap here um gogo
34:37patas day oh trade candidate that is okay he's at least number three on my list now if i'm thinking
34:48about it yeah i think i like him more than nick richards um he's limited he is tough as shit
34:55oh no like he toughness is there and he's going to give you energy it's your the european nick fans
35:01would love him i'll tell you that right now i think all nick fans would love him but like
35:05this dude can like really get physical uh which is what you want out of a backup center we probably
35:12should have talked about him earlier he's one of these dudes too like sneaky pretty good passer
35:18also it's obviously not one of the plays that you draw up a ton like you're not giving the ball
35:22to go
35:22patas day and be like hey you play out of the high posts and find cutters like no because he's
35:26usually
35:26out there with other guys who are going to handle the ball a lot more but that being said like
35:30sneaky
35:31good passer for a center uh can rebound rebound with force play with force boxes out could score
35:37inside like i actually like that option quite a lot and goga patas day who's obviously been around a
35:43little bit um he's younger than you think he's going to be 27 later this month but as far as
35:50his
35:50contract goes it's just an expiring 7.6 million you saw orlando make some deals and keep some guys
35:56they're probably still going to want to try to shed money for for flexibility in their own right
36:00getting to 7.6 million would be uh interesting that's the challenge sort of how you figure that
36:05out um but i i do think that's it like i would prefer him over nick richards if i'm them
36:13just it
36:14might it's going to cost you more players in the trade that's the gig to to aggregate the salary to
36:19get there that's that's what it's going to cost you there okay before before we wrap here last thing
36:24look i get it nix fans are disappointed disappointed and there's going to be a lot of
36:30talk about the owner who just a couple of weeks ago shows you how things can change in the new
36:35york
36:35minute just a couple of weeks ago was getting some love for staying out the way and now for some
36:40people this feels like he's in the way i've said before there's a world in which he could get booed
36:44on opening night for not bringing back the whole team although i do think the nix have done a pretty
36:50good job of bringing back mostly everybody as good as they could in this situation do you think
36:56nix fans should be mad at james dolan i'd rule number one i would say you can always be mad
37:00but
37:01do you think nix fans should be mad at james dolan i mean you could be mad at him for
37:07a lot of reasons
37:08it doesn't have to be specifically this but for this but for not exceeding the second if you're if
37:14you're mad at him in general i understand i get it we talked about all the reasons on this show
37:19before but uh for this specifically i mean look the second apron penalties are
37:28extenuous like they're just very difficult to sort of overcome um and you don't want to be
37:34in the second apron multiple years in a row i think there's a world where they're probably preparing to
37:39be in it next year because of all the money they're gonna have committed uh we'll see but
37:44i don't i'm not gonna i'm not gonna say you shouldn't be mad at the owner of a team because
37:50you can be mad at all these dudes but at the same time like i it just kind of is
37:57what it is like if
37:58you were only gonna like you still you got those discounts from jose and sham it and if you really
38:03try to avoid the second apron which look all the teams pretty much are and you just accept that in
38:08today's nba and all you have to spend for a year is what eight nine million basically where somebody
38:14else was gonna come in over the top rope with a non-taxpayer mid-level yeah full 15 million a
38:20year
38:21like it's just something that's hard to beat you know what i mean like you were gonna you were gonna
38:24come to the table with what 60 of that so yeah i i it's tough but i mean it's i
38:32just i just i just
38:33understand that in today's nba you just it just is what it is teams are trying to avoid the second
38:38apron i agree with you i agree i'm not saying that i'm not going to tell anybody how they should
38:42feel right you know as if you want if you want to be mad at the owner be mad at
38:45all yeah i'm not
38:46going to do that because you know as our friend andrew claudio would always say react accordingly
38:49right like sometimes you do i get it um but andrew be trolling what he says that sometimes
38:55he says he's serious about it but i hear sometimes i think you're right you have to look at where
38:59things
38:59are i think sometimes for the fans and the fan base you're looking at things in the old way of
39:04the
39:04this is the new nba and a new nba this is the reality of what it is with the second
39:08apron yeah
39:09and yeah sometimes feelings are going to be hurt you're going to lose players off of title winning
39:13teams or contending teams and i'm not just saying yeah man deal with it doesn't matter it matters
39:19all the pieces matter right i'm never somebody to not say that but this is the new reality we're in
39:26and i think within that new reality all especially when a front office's hands were tied the best
39:33this probably and we'll see what else because there's other moves for the next we make here
39:38what has been the outcome here and bringing back shamit and diawara and alvarado at the numbers you
39:43got him at while losing mitchell robinson probably while this is a hard pill to swallow probably was the
39:51best that you could do as a next front office with their hands tied yeah so i think if you
39:56step back
39:57and look at it from that situation you will understand that while it is sad that the nicks
40:02lost mitchell robinson this was probably the best they could do all things considered and we'll see
40:09what they do given the circumstance given the circumstance all things considered given
40:12circumstances because we'll see and if we could play the alternative out for 30 seconds or whatever
40:17if you decide to keep mitch as priority number one you probably lose one or both of shamit and
40:24alvarado and then like i don't know what the repercussions of that are but it does feel like
40:30you lose more than just one other dude like i don't think it's a 1v1 mitch or shamit i think
40:37it was
40:37mitch you keep him and then you're probably going to lose multiple guys off of that bench like i don't
40:43know if i don't know what happens with diawara i don't know what happens with shamit i don't know
40:46what happens with jose like there's something you could have figured out there but maybe like you
40:49don't know maybe they signed mitch and then they would have lost shamit and diawara and maybe had
40:54the part with somebody else we don't know i agree i think the alternate was more likely to what you
40:58said but that's gonna do it let us know what you think how you feeling about mitchell robinson moving
41:02on to boston i still can't believe he's gonna be in green and white that is that is that is
41:06wild that
41:07is crazy what do you want to see the next do is their backup center options this offseason we'll have
41:12more coming your way on new york got games summer league in vegas starts next week we will preview
41:18that this weekend so we got a lot to talk about and we'll react to some of the young players
