00:00Today I'm going to revisit a very special election that I told you about in early June.
00:05This is the election in which property owners and only property owners could vote in the city of
00:10Los Angeles about whether to increase the fee for streetlights. The problem in LA is that thieves
00:17have been stealing copper wires from streetlights, knocking many of them out of commission, and the
00:22city wanted to replace that copper wiring, but also to start installing solar-powered streetlights
00:29at considerable expense. However, the charge was rather steep and it grew higher the more
00:35apartments or houses you owned. So property owners voted by mail and the city announced the final
00:43result on June 26th. The proposal to raise the fee was defeated by an almost 80 to 20 margin,
00:51absolutely rejected by the property owners. Now, the city still says that it will find the money
00:57somewhere to fix the streetlights. But what's important here is that the property owners of
01:03Los Angeles have voted no confidence in the city council. Property owners are tired of paying taxes
01:08and getting very poor services in return. Whether that's bad firefighting services, as we all know
01:13from the Palisades fire in 2025, or bad education or homeless encampments that keep reappearing even
01:20when they're cleared, property owners staged a very quiet revolt against the city of Los Angeles.
01:26Whether that has any further political momentum, we'll see going forward.
