00:00Like a beat beat beat with a sound of...
00:03Hey look who's sneaking up on us. Do you see this? Hello? I think that's A.D.
00:07Hello A.D.
00:09Hi A.D. Welcome to our guest house.
00:11Guess what? We're gonna take you for a little spin, but first,
00:15lets you and I slip into something a little more comfortable, shall we?
00:18Oh, I'd like that.
00:18Okay. What goes on in my phone?
00:32Uh, yes, yes, they're already in Scots. It's A.D. again.
00:35Hey, look at us. We're in our comfortable clothes.
00:38Yeah, cozy. For the tour.
00:40Yes, for the tour of our guest house, which this is. Come.
00:43Come for our guest house.
00:44Come.
00:53So, this is the guest house that we're in.
00:55It's had many functions. You know, the guy who owned this before was Claude Ravier,
01:00from whom I bought it, and it was a kind of a...
01:03People said, oh, I've been at parties at your house.
01:05There were pinball machines, I think, in this room.
01:08Yes, and a kind of a wet bar.
01:10And, you know, there was a lot of activity here.
01:13And then we did tap classes in here.
01:14We scuffed up the wooden floor terribly.
01:18Then we kind of fixed it up, because this was like a whole play space.
01:22Before any movie or play, I would have constant, habitual, routine rehearsals here.
01:28We'd have acting classes here.
01:29We came on to Barbara Bester, the greatest architect and designer here in L.A.
01:34Amazing team.
01:35And what a great team.
01:35Barbara introduced us to Zeta Krunk.
01:37Oh, Zeta Krunk, yes.
01:38Who helped with all of the interior design.
01:40And then thinking about the function for the boys, for all our needs,
01:45your performance and creative and artistic needs.
01:48We're also trying to figure a way to contain them.
01:51Because, you know, once you start having children, they take over.
01:54Oh, yes.
01:55Yeah, you know that movie, The Blob?
01:56You ever see The Blob?
01:57Yeah.
01:57Steve McQueen's first movie, yeah.
01:59This space, pictured in our minds, like, oh, maybe we'll put on plays here.
02:02Because with the kids, Jeff plays piano.
02:05I'm an aerialist, contortionist dancer.
02:07And maybe we'll have a dinner party and we can all, like, come in and dance and recite a sonnet
02:11or two.
02:12This whole door behind you is open in a different way.
02:17Indoor, outdoor.
02:18Which will allow for a connection between us and the outside and this place, too.
02:24There wasn't a door there before at all.
02:26It just really invites our outdoor courtyard, which was also redone with the stone and Terramato.
02:34Did all the landscaping.
02:36So gorgeous to look at.
02:38We just moved the piano around today and I have a notion that we could use this.
02:45You know, I played the piano a little bit and we were fooling around on this before.
02:48I have a cozy little flat in what is known as old Manhattan will settle down right here in town.
03:00Yeah, very good, very good.
03:01I have a song for every occasion.
03:03Yeah, yeah, that's true.
03:04Every idea.
03:05No, that's it.
03:06And that's the show.
03:07Get out of here, A.D.
03:08We've told you too much.
03:13I never saw this big cherry before, but I love it.
03:16We should, we might buy that.
03:19I do remember showing the swatches to Charlie, our eldest son, and he was really into it.
03:26I think he really collaborated and then we were like, let's go show to dad.
03:30Like, let's make sure he's on board.
03:31I love all the colors.
03:32It just makes me so happy.
03:34My sister, Pam, painted this.
03:37I've had this for a long time, but this is me.
03:39This is taken from a photograph of me and our first dog, Ginger.
03:43Yeah.
03:44I'm like about eight there.
03:46Cute.
03:46Little boxer briefs.
03:48It's so cute.
03:51Come to the Blue Room.
03:52Isn't there a song in the Blue Room?
03:54We're passing this glorious.
03:55We have to look at the ceramic bow hooks because I adore them.
03:59They're just so darling.
04:00I sure do.
04:01So cute.
04:02Oh my gosh.
04:03Hi.
04:03Oh look.
04:04So this is not staged exactly.
04:06This is our production.
04:07You're your crew here.
04:09Here we are.
04:10You tell them about this room here.
04:13This is like the guest bedroom.
04:15So there's some closet space.
04:17But what's so cool, because it's a smaller space, this is a Murphy bed.
04:23So it literally folds all the way back up.
04:26It's a flat wall after that.
04:27But it looks really pretty.
04:27It looks like.
04:28Oh boy.
04:28Okay.
04:29Hang on.
04:29There you go.
04:31Okay.
04:31Yeah.
04:32See how strong I am?
04:34You impressed me.
04:35I know.
04:36I'm not going to tangle with her.
04:37I'll tell you that.
04:38But you'll tango with me.
04:40And then there's a beautiful bathroom.
04:42But what's also cool about this bathroom.
04:45So yes, there's an indoor shower.
04:47But then on the other side of it is our outdoor shower.
04:51So that when we're hosting like a pool party.
04:53It's outdoor, like after you go in the pool, which we have out there.
04:56Yeah.
04:56They can go rinse off, shower outside in the fresh air, I think.
05:02We're so lucky.
05:02This is all too luxurious, but I'll never not appreciate it.
05:13They redid this window.
05:14It's bigger.
05:15You can see the sky.
05:16It's a gorgeous window.
05:18I like this runner thing.
05:21Oh my gosh.
05:22It reminds me of the stars.
05:23It reminds me of like a sky at night, just like twinkling stars.
05:27The house used to be filled with Pam's, my sister's art all over the place on every square
05:32inch of the wall.
05:32But you said, oh, I like this particular one.
05:35I just love the size of it.
05:37It's so big.
05:39And then girl, she's so beautiful.
05:41All of it.
05:41It's just this character from bygone era.
05:44That's just so beautiful.
05:46A little bit classical with a little whimsy and irony.
05:50And that's me again.
05:51It's just like the Watts Tower or La Tour Eiffel.
05:55So these are my parents that Pam did once again from a wood block.
06:00So guys, we'll clear all of it.
06:03I love.
06:06We didn't introduce you to our art piece.
06:09They're always in our house.
06:11They're kind of an installation, a living art piece.
06:13Sometimes you find them here, sometimes there.
06:15And they just move around a little bit.
06:16They don't speak.
06:18I like it a lot.
06:19Now, oh, so here's you.
06:21I'm not the only one pictured around these parts.
06:25These are my brothers who are sadly no longer with us.
06:29I think this picture is taken from us on a vacation in Atlantic City.
06:33We used to drive from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Atlantic City,
06:36the four of us kids, and we'd dress up.
06:39I would dress up.
06:40There are pictures of me, probably not around here,
06:42of me with a shirt and a tie and a coat on like we did.
06:49Nick Massey and shine a light on us, Nick Massey.
06:52Give us a second.
06:53Paul Cornett.
06:55All right.
07:00I'll tell you very quickly about this bathroom.
07:03This was airspace.
07:05There was no such room before Barbara Bester's architecture went to work.
07:11And here it is.
07:12I never wanted to shy away from colors, even though sometimes it made me nervous,
07:17thinking like, is it going to turn out well?
07:18Is it going to read?
07:19But that's why you have Barbara, because you can trust that it's going to turn out great.
07:23I love this bathroom.
07:24Yeah.
07:24As much as you can, a human being can love a bathroom.
07:28If I wasn't already married, I'd marry this bathroom.
07:30But I've spoken for.
07:33You're so funny.
07:34Oh, thank you.
07:45I'm going to try not to gush, because this is kind of a room that I have a lot of
07:51interest in.
07:51It's been used for many things over the years.
07:54Once in our era, I started to, you know, come up here and I'd take a nap here.
08:01It would be alternative, you know, and with the kids here.
08:03I never had kind of a place to really have an office.
08:07And this is the one part on the property that faces the hills.
08:11And this wall, can you imagine, had no window at all.
08:14This was nothing.
08:15So this room was not light like this at all.
08:17And there was no view onto these hills.
08:20And it's cool.
08:21You kept saying that, like, when I build the rig, that you can watch me while you're working.
08:26And now look what's out there.
08:27There's not only the hills, but there's that rig that you have seen her on.
08:31Yeah.
08:31Can you imagine that?
08:32I just feel like the whole energy in here is very calm.
08:35Listen to how quiet right now.
08:37Yeah.
08:39It's really quiet here.
08:40It's just fantastic.
08:42And then you have your fender roads.
08:43So you can come and practice.
08:44Well, and then I wanted another piano up here, because if the boys are playing their piano,
08:48I sometimes need to do my work immediately and at the sand simultaneously.
08:54And I've had this Fender Rhodes since the 70s.
08:57I bought it when it was new.
08:59A lot of people know this as a delightful item.
09:06I love this desk.
09:08I feel like this really does suit you and really does make sense in the practical sense of it.
09:14I need a place to work.
09:14Like, you need to write.
09:15Look at this place to work.
09:15Look at me looking at it.
09:17This is a nice corner of the world.
09:19Yeah.
09:19And then this heavy paperweight was also done by my sister as of a dinosaur, you know,
09:24in my connection to dinosaurs.
09:25Yeah.
09:25And so there's that.
09:27And, you know, there's this.
09:30I'm kind of a little bit of a freak for the right pen.
09:32Minimalist.
09:33Yeah.
09:33And so the ballpoint pen, and I've chosen a couple of ballpoint pens here that I particularly
09:37like.
09:37And I think I used this on criminal intent because I was playing a detective and I could
09:43put this in any kind of pocket with a little notepad and go, yes.
09:47And, uh-huh.
09:48Uh-huh.
09:49I think this is what happened there.
09:51Very good, you know.
09:52Why are you so cute?
09:53I can't stand it.
09:54I'm reenacting you.
09:56You're a doll.
09:57Well, and lamps.
09:58I'm crazy about lamplight, you know.
10:01Oh.
10:01It's not plugged in.
10:02It's not plugged in.
10:02That's okay.
10:03I love it.
10:04Melody Gardeau just gave me that.
10:06Melody Gardeau is a great singer with whom our band recorded this song, Misty.
10:10I think it could go right there.
10:13Look, look, look how it fits right there.
10:14P.G.
10:15Woodhouse.
10:15We love to read those.
10:17I've read all of P.G.
10:17Woodhouse.
10:18These things are meaningful to me.
10:19And this is one of the original, you know, this looks like a first edition of a P.G.
10:23Woodhouse thing.
10:23And that's nice to have there.
10:25My sister did that.
10:26This is, you know, Isle of Dogs.
10:28That's my character, Duke.
10:29Also the boys' favorite movie of yours.
10:32They love.
10:32They rewatched that movie a lot.
10:34That's true.
10:34Charlie made this.
10:35He's like a-
10:36Lego.
10:36He's a Lego champion.
10:39Your Culturistas award.
10:40Bo and Yang.
10:41Here's my Jeffermations book, you know.
10:43Okay, tell me when to stop.
10:44What?
10:46Stop.
10:47Okay, left or right?
10:48Right.
10:49Okay.
10:49I would say to you, don't sweat the small stuff.
10:53Still, a little deodorant never hurt anybody.
10:55Really?
10:57I think I smell pretty good.
10:59You do smell.
11:00You always smell.
11:01I don't know about you though.
11:03I'm so sorry for that.
11:05I apologize for my wife.
11:06I'm kidding.
11:07We'll hash this out later.
11:10This would be from our first album, Jeff Goldblum, The Mildred Scenzer Orchestra.
11:15My sister did that.
11:17It's Louis Armstrong and an alien.
11:19She would pair different, you know, things together.
11:22That's me in the center there at Frank Sinatra's house for our second album, I believe.
11:30We went and shot the cover at Frank Sinatra's house in Palm Springs.
11:34Oh, hey, that's kind of interesting.
11:36Those four portraits on the end.
11:38That's me and my two brothers and sister.
11:41And that my sister did.
11:42It's a kind of a collage of me at the piano and Scarlett Johansson.
11:47And she sang a song on our album.
11:49I think these pictures are a nice little, you know, grouping above your bed.
11:54Not to mention, how about that for a chair?
11:56That wing chair.
11:57I've always hankered after something like that.
12:00And that substantial gorgeous orange and white striped thing.
12:06Oh my gosh, that I use.
12:08I put my glasses on there and a book or this and that.
12:10Yeah, even I come up here sometimes and like just read.
12:13You do?
12:14Yeah.
12:14What a confession.
12:15I never realized it.
12:17Why you think it's just your room?
12:19Well, as long as you know the password.
12:22Do you know the password to get into this room?
12:25Fidelio.
12:26Fidelio, that's correct.
12:27Yeah, it's from Eyes Wide Shut.
12:28Yeah, she knows the password.
12:37You tell them what's here because this was kind of to her specifications.
12:41And to mine, I have certain needs that this meets beautifully.
12:44The equipment you needed.
12:45But that workout bench, I was a little nervous because it felt a little bubblegum.
12:49But I feel like it really works with the grounding of the floor.
12:53And then the equipment, like how it's pink.
12:56It worked beautifully, especially with the mirrors.
12:58There's like a tint of pink in them.
13:00And then the sconces on the wall, they have pink and red.
13:04And then the shades are pink.
13:06I like it pink.
13:07But I also love this wall.
13:08I actually use this wall a lot for my handstands.
13:12And this is a really important ladder for contortionists and acrobats.
13:17So I use that a lot for stretching.
13:19And then over here, this is kind of cool because I like how it folds in and out.
13:25So you have a little bit different range for like if you're doing a pull-up or if you're just
13:32doing like leg raises, you know.
13:34If you're just doing leg raises, you would just do.
13:36This is what she was doing when we first met.
13:38Up like that.
13:39Something like that.
13:39But I went over to her at the Equinox on Sunset and said, what are you doing?
13:45There wasn't this big window.
13:47But there are these nice pink shades.
13:49And then this has a great, great view of downtown LA.
13:52Yeah.
13:52Like that.
13:52If you want, we can show you that.
13:54Do you like that?
13:54Or do you like that?
13:55Or do you like that?
13:56We can put it back down.
13:57But look.
13:58Look what they gave us.
14:00Look.
14:00One of these things.
14:01We're just very lucky.
14:03You chose the wrong one.
14:04That's just hard.
14:05That's not going to do it.
14:06Okay.
14:07Okay.
14:08Yeah.
14:09So there's that one.
14:10But if you do it, if you do it.
14:11You really want to do it.
14:12You know, I always like the clicker.
14:14I get nervous if I don't have my hands on the clicker.
14:17And so, and there's that one going up.
14:18So here.
14:19So I kind of like it like this.
14:20You like it.
14:21You like to control the light and have it kind of all like this.
14:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:25Look how substantial this is so you don't fall out of there.
14:28And I think this is a lock.
14:30Look at this.
14:31Look at this.
14:31Look how.
14:32This is just great.
14:33It's really great.
14:35And it goes all the way.
14:36You get a cross breeze with that window over there.
14:38Yeah.
14:39Oh boy.
14:40You feel that?
14:41Even though it's balmy out.
14:42Yeah.
14:42I like that.
14:44And look at the view.
14:45As you're on the treadmill, you work it downtown.
14:49I'll spend hours in here once in the morning.
14:52And then if I'm lucky in the afternoon.
14:55And then the boys come home from school and then they run up here.
14:58And sometimes they'll jump up there and try to like, Mama, look, I can do a pull up.
15:03And then Jeff likes to walk.
15:06That's it.
15:07I'm a spent force.
15:08Oh, that's my cardio for the day.
15:18But it starts open.
15:19It starts open.
15:20It starts open.
15:20I listen to directions much better than my husband.
15:23Throw me under the bus.
15:24Throw me under the bus.
15:25Throw me under the bus.
15:25With the baby in the backwater.
15:26The wheels on the bus go round and round.
15:29Right over Jeff.
15:30And there he goes.
15:32Okay, he's flat as a pancake.
15:33No, that's okay.
15:34Hey, A.D.
15:36It's been, this has been a great, great honor.
15:37What a red-leaded day for us.
15:39Yeah, it's been a lot of fun.
15:40Yeah, it's been spectacular.
15:41A.D., we have to say goodbye to an ally.
15:44I gotta get cooking.
15:46Really?
15:46Yeah, make some dinner.
15:47Yeah.
15:48And I've got places to go, people to see.
15:50We have much to do.
15:51And I'm sure you do too, much more than us.
15:54Bye, A.D.
15:54Thank you so much for coming, really.
15:56We appreciate it.
16:00No hand goodbye.
16:01Wait.
16:02No, not me.
16:05You just had to be the last one.
16:07I was like, wait, I can get a little.
16:09I can't read the last word.
16:10There she goes, goodbye.
16:11Get out.
16:12Get out.
16:12Get out.
