Thousands of anti-migrant protesters marched across South Africa on Tuesday, demanding the removal of undocumented migrants as authorities deployed a heavy police and security presence to prevent violence. Demonstrations took place in major cities including Johannesburg, Durban, Germiston, Soweto, Hillbrow, and Yeoville, with some incidents of looting, property damage, and arrests reported despite the largely peaceful protests. Police said the army was placed on standby in parts of Johannesburg and Durban, while officers arrested several people over violence and theft. Protest leaders vowed to continue weekly demonstrations, insisting the government strengthen immigration enforcement. President Cyril Ramaphosa urged citizens to protest peacefully, reminding the public that legally documented foreign nationals are protected under South African law. As tensions escalated, thousands of migrants from countries including Malawi, Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe continued returning home, with many leaving out of fear for their safety amid growing anti-immigrant sentiment.
