00:00The way we use our homes is evolving.
00:04Responding to our changing tastes, trends and technology.
00:09In the last two decades, we've embraced open plan living like never before.
00:15That is very special.
00:18More recently, incorporating zone dining and living spaces,
00:23live work spaces and of course, kitchen diners.
00:26What were once separate rooms have become a blended combination
00:31of eating, working and socialising.
00:35Yay!
00:36But this means many of our homes, often built in the last century,
00:40just don't function the way we want them to.
00:43I feel like you're in a different house.
00:44Are you in? Yeah, we're in.
00:47So in this series, I'll be working with homeowners up and down the country.
00:52I'm just walking past...guys.
00:55..design and schemes to help them remodel the spaces
00:58they do most of their living in.
01:00For this house!
01:01This house!
01:03To help them function and floor better.
01:06The house is just a Victoria sponge at the moment
01:09and you've got to make it into a red velvet.
01:11There's my brief right there!
01:14As we turn completely dysfunctional spaces into beautiful ones.
01:20I just think it's a place where you open the door and people walk in
01:23and you're proud that it's your house, you know?
01:30In the UK, renovating worn-out properties has never been so popular.
01:34We love the idea of taking a house and a garden
01:37and returning it to its former glory
01:39while adding our very own personal style.
01:43But sometimes, a project can be so challenging
01:46that we end up doing, well, nothing.
01:49And that's been the case for Michelle for the last seven years.
01:55Marketing executive Michelle bought this bungalow in Windsor
01:58for just over £400,000 back in 2018.
02:04It was intended as a do-or-upper,
02:06but with no experience of renovation
02:08and no idea where to start, she's come unstuck.
02:13Michelle, how are you?
02:15I'm good, how are you, John?
02:16Lovely to meet you.
02:17Lovely day for us.
02:18It is, isn't it?
02:19Bit of a tired house.
02:20I know, welcome to the hovel.
02:22To the hovel.
02:23The hovel, yes.
02:24That is brutal, that.
02:25Can I come inside and have a look?
02:26Let me show you.
02:34So this is the kitchen
02:36and, shockingly, this is actually the best room in the house.
02:39I'm slightly worried about seeing the rest of the house
02:41that this is the best room.
02:43Yeah.
02:43I mean, the first thing you notice
02:44is that it's incredibly narrow, really narrow.
02:48I mean, you've got no storage that side.
02:49Yeah, practically no storage, it's really bad.
02:52And no seating, that's my biggest problem in here.
02:55How bad is it to cook in?
02:57I don't really cook, to be honest, because of this.
03:00So you're saying you genuinely don't cook in the space
03:02because the space is so bad?
03:04Yeah, I mean, I cook a minimum, but not a lot, no.
03:07But you don't invite people over to gather and eat
03:10and have dinner and cook for them
03:11because the kitchen is so terrible?
03:14Yeah, I don't even have a table.
03:17Michelle has a packed social life,
03:19with friends in and out of each other's houses, just not hers.
03:24In my last place in Geneva where I lived,
03:26I had a really lovely open-plan kitchen living diner,
03:29used to have people over all the time,
03:31and it was just really nice.
03:33And here, I'm stuck in here shouting through the wall to them.
03:37After seven years of living in this cluttered, anti-social home,
03:41she's desperate to make a change.
03:44I am not joking when I say I have worked out hundreds
03:47of different variations of a design for this place.
03:50I just don't know how to bring it all together.
03:53I think with this, there's been a little bit of deer in headlights.
03:56It can be a little bit overwhelming to think,
03:59gosh, you know, this is a permanent thing,
04:02and if I get it wrong, there's no fixing it.
04:04So, yeah, the stakes are high, and I just want to get it right.
04:09And there's another space at the back of the house
04:11that's far from ideal.
04:15Oh, my God!
04:17This is the lean-to.
04:19I mean, you say lean-to,
04:20it looks like it's made out of cardboard and a few battens.
04:24Look, you can barely fit.
04:25I mean, literally, I'm there.
04:26Look, it's actually touching my head.
04:28Yeah.
04:29This tacked-on lean-to is one of the worst extensions I've ever seen.
04:34See, it's like little metal posts in there.
04:37Is that structure?
04:38That's structural, yeah.
04:38You're joking!
04:39No.
04:40And I love the way it just comes down right next to the window.
04:43I mean, luckily, it just misses the handle,
04:45so you can just about open the window.
04:47I mean, that is really, really, really bad.
04:49I can even see daylight.
04:53Literally, there's, like, fresh air coming through the gaps.
04:56This cobbled-together extension is totally unfit for purpose
05:00and it gets worse.
05:03Do you want to see my favourite feature?
05:04Go on.
05:05Wait there.
05:06Where are you going?
05:12Welcome to the bathroom!
05:16Oh.
05:17My.
05:19God.
05:20So, if I have people over for a barbecue
05:21and they're in the garden, the window has to be closed
05:24because if people are coming in and they're out...
05:27No wonder Michelle rarely invites people round.
05:32From the aerial plan,
05:34we can see just how awkward the layout of Michelle's bungalow really is.
05:39There's a tiny kitchen crammed in the corner
05:41with zero connection to the living room.
05:44In fact, her bathroom sits awkwardly in between.
05:49That's not the only thing getting in the way.
05:52The dysfunctional lean-to is basically being used as a shed
05:55and as a total barrier to the garden.
06:00Michelle needs my help with her kitchen,
06:03rearranging the crazy layout and opening up her home.
06:08Most of Michelle's neighbours have extended into the garden.
06:12Her house is the remaining ugly duckling.
06:16I mean, it was bad enough inside.
06:18Outside, it's a complete dog's dinner.
06:22But on a slightly more positive note,
06:25your garden is fantastic.
06:27I know, it's great, isn't it?
06:28The potential is amazing.
06:31I don't know, it's got to be like 30 metres deep.
06:33Yeah, yeah, I think it's about 80 foot.
06:35That's fantastic, that.
06:38And the fact that you're nearly south facing
06:41makes it really valuable, precious space.
06:44This is why I bought it.
06:45Like, there's so much potential in this garden.
06:47Right now, it's not used.
06:48Spark uses it.
06:49But it's such a great space,
06:51and I can really see what it could be.
06:54Time to turn Spark the Dog's Playground
06:56into something more useful for Michelle.
07:00I'm just intrigued as to what your story is.
07:03Why has it taken so long to do anything?
07:05So, there was a redundancy, then COVID,
07:09and then prices went through the roof,
07:11and I was living in hope they'd come back down.
07:13But that's not happening, and I just want to do it now.
07:16I'm kind of ready to get back to how I want to live.
07:20What are your expectations?
07:22I'd love an extension out the back here
07:24that just connects to the garden.
07:26Nice kitchen, that open-plan living.
07:28I'd love to get that back as well.
07:30So, it's a full reconfiguration, isn't it?
07:32Yeah.
07:33And what's your budget?
07:34120.
07:35That's a very challenging budget
07:37for a bungalow which needs a lot of work.
07:40I mean, talk about pressure.
07:42That's it, George.
07:43So, I need you to come in on budget
07:44with something really beautiful.
07:46Just do that.
07:47Just that.
07:48Challenge accepted.
07:49Challenge accepted.
07:52A large extension and wholesale reconfiguration
07:55on this budget is ambitious.
07:59But 120 grand is a lot of money,
08:02so Michelle's hopes are high.
08:05With that in mind, I'm heading to the studio
08:08to come up with a scheme which will hopefully transform
08:12the way Michelle lives.
08:15What I really want to do is create a clear line of sight
08:19from the front door all the way through the hallway
08:23to a new extension at the back and then out of the garden.
08:27I think you want to do something which is pretty big.
08:34That should give Michelle the house that she wants.
08:38But my biggest worry is the existing building
08:42is in such a terrible state of repair.
08:45I'm worried about the budget.
08:47She's got all the ambition in the world.
08:48She wants this house to be absolutely fantastic
08:50and have that wow factor.
08:52The big question is, can she afford to do all of this?
08:58Every single penny is going to count.
09:05For some design inspiration and to refine Michelle's scheme,
09:10I've come to a home in the southwest
09:12that has a large full-width extension similar to my plan.
09:21So you walk through the entrance hallway,
09:23through this little narrow door and then boom.
09:29The whole space just opens up.
09:32You've got dining, kitchen, living,
09:35but also a very calm space for just chilling out
09:39and looking out over the garden.
09:41After years of putting up with her cramped home,
09:44a large, sociable, open-plan space like this
09:47is just what Michelle is looking for.
09:49This area is very calm, very minimal.
09:53So you've got these beautiful, light, bright walls.
09:57So even in the winter days,
09:58any light that comes into the back of the house
10:00has been bounced around everywhere.
10:03And this is your classic, big picture window
10:08looking out over the garden.
10:11Minimal styling and large south face and windows
10:14all add to the quality of the space.
10:18And then you go from one very calm, decluttered area
10:21to another.
10:24Sofa, TV, very beautiful minimal piece
10:29of Scandinavian furniture.
10:31And then you've got these gorgeous metal-framed doors.
10:36Beautiful ironmongering.
10:38And if that wasn't enough natural light in this space,
10:42they'd put in the most enormous skylight.
10:46And then there's the kitchen itself.
10:49It is so beautiful.
10:52Look at the detailing on the drawers.
10:54You've got this lovely pink colour,
10:55but then the dark veneer just adding that bit of quality,
10:59not just to the top of the drawer, but the sides as well.
11:03There's plenty of storage, but it's all low-level.
11:08Compared to Michelle's small, narrow kitchen, this is a dream.
11:14After seven years of living in the hovel,
11:17I want to give Michelle a home as spectacular as this.
11:26In Windsor, Michelle has been putting up with her tiny,
11:30run-down living space for far too long.
11:33You don't invite people over to gather and eat and have dinner
11:36and cook for them.
11:37Don't even have a table.
11:39Instead of cracking on with the dream renovation,
11:42she's been living in a nightmare.
11:44Is that structural?
11:45Is that structural? Yeah.
11:46You're joking!
11:47After seven years, she's finally had enough.
11:51I just want to do it now.
11:53I'm kind of ready to get back to how I want to live.
11:57Michelle's asked me to come up with a radical new design,
11:59which will transform her home and get life back on track.
12:04It's going to be absolutely fantastic when it's done.
12:07I know. I can't wait.
12:09Me neither.
12:14With the scheme for Michelle's extension complete,
12:17I'm heading back to Windsor.
12:20My radical plan for the reconfigured ground floor
12:24will use all of her £120,000 budget to its full potential.
12:30With months of building work ahead,
12:33for a home in desperate need of some TLC,
12:36I hope my design lives up to her expectations.
12:41So, big extension on the back of this.
12:44Wow, that is huge.
12:45Really big.
12:46We've gone to the absolute limit of what you can do under planning.
12:51Brilliant.
12:52Now, what that's going to give you is a big open plan,
12:57kitchen, dining, living.
12:59Love it.
13:03The awkward bathroom that divided the space has been relocated,
13:08and the awful lean-to is gone.
13:12A central hallway now brings us elegantly through to the new extension.
13:18That then means your tiny little, tiny little kitchen
13:22is going to become like a little utility space.
13:24Oh, brilliant.
13:25Your existing living room becomes a little study space.
13:29We're going to leave a little gap between the back of the bungalow
13:33and the extension, just on that side, so that in your study space,
13:38your home office, you can open a window, you've got natural light
13:40and you've got ventilation.
13:42The proposed extension, which falls under permitted development,
13:46is a massive 50-metre-squared space.
13:49It will almost double the size of Michelle's home.
13:53And then the extension, super simple, to be honest with you.
13:57Pantry area, kitchen, all the way down that side.
14:01Yeah.
14:02Beautiful big island unit as well.
14:04Dining area in the back corner, seating.
14:08And then a living space off to the left.
14:11I think it'd be beautiful because it becomes one big,
14:14sociable, open plan space.
14:18Michelle will finally have a kitchen and dining area
14:22to suit her busy social life.
14:25I just love the layout.
14:27You've got about four linear metres of kitchen
14:29running down the extension that side,
14:31and the island unit's about three and a half metres long.
14:34I'll have to learn to cook.
14:37No excuse anymore.
14:40To give Michelle a clearer idea of the new space,
14:44I've brought along a 3D graphic.
14:47You come through.
14:48Oh, that looks incredible.
14:50Dining area off to the right.
14:52That's your living area.
14:54Doors opening out on the garden.
14:57And then that's your kitchen.
14:58All the way down that side, with the biggest island unit ever.
15:02Big, long kitchen.
15:04Access through to the pantry there in the corner.
15:07Happy?
15:07It's just brilliant.
15:09Happy days.
15:10I'll take that.
15:12I'm delighted Michelle loves this large, bright, open plan scheme.
15:18If we get it right, this project will revolutionise the way she lives.
15:24Shall we get on and build it then?
15:25Great, let's get started.
15:29More than two months on, we finally kick off the massive extension.
15:36From here on, Michelle will be living in the chaos of a building site.
15:41Here goes.
15:43The first thing to hit the list, the shocking lean-to.
15:46It's well past the state to come down this place.
15:49Thank goodness for that.
15:59She's definitely going to love it.
16:11With the old cobbled together extension gone, building a palatial new one is now underway.
16:20The ground has been raised by head builder Mark Wharton and his team,
16:24which includes his son, Elliot.
16:28So, at the moment, we are laying the trench blocks down on the foundations.
16:32So, that's trench blocks and bricks to bring it up to the floor height.
16:43Six weeks into the build, and with the huge expansion of this house in full swing,
16:48I'm back to see how Michelle's dream home is coming on.
16:54Hello, hello.
16:55Hello, how are you doing?
16:56How are you doing?
16:57Look at all this.
16:58It's a hive of activity.
17:00It's changed a bit.
17:01Lovely to see you.
17:02Oh, my word.
17:04The difference is already phenomenal.
17:07The floors have been ripped out, the dark disconnected spaces are being opened up,
17:12and the builders have been creative in the old kitchen.
17:17You know that I told you my favourite feature last time was the window of the bathroom out into the
17:22lean-to.
17:22Yeah.
17:23It's got even better.
17:24Go on.
17:25Come this way.
17:29Brilliant!
17:30Turn the old kitchen into a temporary builder's toilet.
17:34They have a sense of humour.
17:36I'd say that your builders have a cracking sense of humour.
17:39It's actually hard to imagine that this was your kitchen.
17:44I know.
17:45And it looks tiny.
17:47It's hard to imagine you could fit a kitchen into this.
17:50The pokey old kitchen will soon become a large utility space
17:55that connects to the new open-plan kitchen, dining and living area.
18:00Now, that is a great extension.
18:02It's massive!
18:04It's huge, isn't it?
18:05That's great, though.
18:06I mean, the rest of the house is going to function so well,
18:09but you are going to live in this space, aren't you?
18:12Yeah, absolutely.
18:13100%.
18:13It's going to be fantastic.
18:15And so light.
18:16I can't wait.
18:18It's a stark contrast to her old, dark, cramped living space.
18:24You always said you wanted lots of natural light.
18:26I think you've got a kitchen window there to the east,
18:29you've got your dining room window to the west when the sun comes down,
18:33you've got that window and all your bifold doors facing south,
18:37and you've got a skylight that's going to get light all day long.
18:41I know.
18:42I feel like sitting on my own little sunroom every day.
18:44Fantastic.
18:46And then opens out through your bifold doors to the garden.
18:52I'm not sure about the design, you know.
18:54It's a bit avant-garde, isn't it?
18:55Yeah.
18:56It might still be chaos in the garden.
18:58But just a few weeks later, the rest of the build is coming on at pace.
19:04Around the side of the house, Michelle has changed the design.
19:08She's building an extension to the new bathroom that wasn't in my original scheme.
19:15I've been rigorous in what I want out here.
19:19I'm quite stubborn when I want to be.
19:22If Michelle makes more changes to the plan,
19:26it could put pressure on her already tight budgets.
19:37In Windsor, Michelle is transforming her cramped rundown home.
19:43Welcome to the hovel.
19:44To the hovel.
19:45The hovel.
19:46After seven years of indecision, her longed-for renovation is finally underway.
19:53My last place, it was that open-plan kind of style
19:56where people could come over all the time.
19:59That was really nice. I loved that.
20:01And that's kind of what I really want to get back to.
20:03The plan is to give Michelle space to socialise
20:06by almost doubling the size of her bungalow.
20:10Big extension on the back of the house.
20:12Wow, that is huge.
20:13The island unit's about three and a half metres long.
20:15I'll have to learn to cook.
20:18Her £120,000 budget will cover my plans for the extension.
20:23But Michelle has other ideas,
20:25and she's adding more building work to the original scheme.
20:33Eight weeks into the build, Michelle has seizing the opportunity
20:37to add many design ideas she's collected over the years.
20:44The challenge for head builder Mark is to make her dreams a reality
20:48while keeping the build on track.
20:52Michelle wanted a feature wall, so she went and chose these bricks.
20:57So this is as it will be.
20:59Mostly rooms are dull, they're just big square rooms with no features.
21:04This one's going to look splendid.
21:08Michelle's not only added a feature wall,
21:10she's asked Mark to create a contemporary shelf
21:13across one whole side of the new living space.
21:18We're doing the concrete shelf slash bench.
21:21This is something I wanted from the beginning,
21:23and everybody has tried talking me out of it.
21:26I fought for this one, and we're getting it.
21:30I applaud the modern industrial look and Michelle's determination.
21:36But she also needs to keep an eye on the bigger picture,
21:39including the tight budget.
21:41No-one could work out how to make it floating,
21:43so the builder came up with the idea of building up a wall underneath it
21:47and then the shelf will overhang it a little bit.
21:49And it works.
21:51Michelle's minor changes to the ground floor plan
21:54do add to the works and the cost.
21:57But she's now made a massive decision.
22:01The chimney on the roof got taken down to the ground
22:05and the roof will be coming off for the loft conversion.
22:09Yep, you heard that right, a loft conversion.
22:12We're not only building outwards,
22:15Michelle's now planning to build upwards too.
22:18She submitted a planning application
22:20and has released an extra 60 grand
22:23to create another floor on her bungalow.
22:27It might be a bigger budget at £180,000,
22:31but she's significantly increased the work.
22:4114 weeks in and the builders have made solid progress.
22:46In the extension, the roof is now up and the electrics are going in.
22:52And at the side of the house in the new bathroom,
22:55Michelle is on the tools.
22:58She's getting involved on the finish of the walls
23:01under the expert guidance of Richie Butt.
23:05It's a brave move, as specialist finishers on any build are no easy task.
23:13So, if you've never used a hawk before, sometimes if it's a little bit runnier,
23:17you can just shake it and it will stick a bit more to the board so you can tilt it,
23:21it's not going to come off.
23:22OK. It's like a pavlova.
23:24Exactly, yeah.
23:25And then you want to just get a bit on the corner and use that bit up.
23:29OK. Let's give it a go. Give it a go.
23:31Right.
23:33That much?
23:34That's it. Perfect.
23:35OK.
23:39Perfect.
23:40That much?
23:41That's it.
23:42OK.
23:44But this isn't actually plaster.
23:47True to form, Michelle's gone for something a little different.
23:50Micro-cement.
23:51To give her walls a concrete look.
23:54It's really good, that.
23:56I might have a job for it.
23:59It offers an industrial finish, but without the thickness and weight of real concrete.
24:04There's no need to paint it, as it comes in a range of colours.
24:08And it's waterproof.
24:10Perfect for a contemporary bathroom.
24:13I'm really surprised at how easy it was.
24:16And I might eat those words in time to come, but I found it quite therapeutic.
24:21It looks good.
24:22You can already see, like, the texture of the grain, that's really nice.
24:25Exactly.
24:26Nice.
24:26Exciting stuff.
24:27Yeah, you've just got a few more metres to go.
24:29Just a few.
24:31But it might take more than Michelle's DIY skills to help keep the rising costs of this build down.
24:38Getting someone in to do it was extortionately expensive.
24:42I think when I costed it up, it was anywhere from, like, 5K to 7K.
24:46Doing it herself means it'll be just over a grand.
24:501,200 versus 7 grand, I'll take that.
24:52She might be making savings here, but the cost of all Michelle's ideas is starting to add up.
24:59In the bathroom extension, she's building something she's always wanted.
25:04A sauna.
25:07This might seem like an unusual plan, but in the UK, Scandinavian influences are becoming ever more prevalent.
25:15Demand for saunas has more than doubled in the past two years.
25:19They're popping up in gardens, homes and public spaces.
25:24And for those who want the health benefits but not the extreme temperatures, dry heat infrared saunas are the latest
25:31innovation.
25:36We're now five months into the build, and the team have been busy.
25:41In the extension, the bifold doors are in, and the kitchen is being fitted.
25:46And work on the unexpected loft conversion is well underway.
25:53Michelle is being brave and bold.
25:56I'm back to see how she's coping with all the extra work.
26:02Hello, hello.
26:03Hey.
26:03So good to see you. How's things?
26:05You all right?
26:06Oh, and the dog as well. Hello there.
26:07The dog is here. We're back.
26:09The building side dog.
26:10Can we go inside and have a look?
26:11Yes, come on in. It's changed a bit.
26:12It's a bit windy today. Mind the door.
26:14Come on.
26:15So how's it going?
26:16Good. Yeah, it's great.
26:17You've stripped back so much stuff. I mean, you've practically, let's be honest, then you've rebuilt the house.
26:23Oh, completely.
26:24All the upstairs has changed.
26:26Yep.
26:27Roof's gone, new roof.
26:28Roof's gone?
26:29I genuinely didn't know that you were taking the whole roof off.
26:32Yeah, yeah.
26:33Going all out and getting all the major messy jobs done on your home at the same time is a
26:39good call if you can afford it.
26:42Michelle's changes to the plan have basically doubled the work and doubled the time.
26:47But have they doubled the cost?
26:50Money is tight now.
26:52Is it?
26:52Yeah.
26:53How tight, if you don't mind me asking?
26:55Um, we're probably about 30 over at the moment.
26:58I think we'll come in about 210.
27:02That's nearly 20% more than Michelle had hoped for.
27:07But considering the original condition of the house, and her ambition, it's hardly surprising.
27:17Crikey.
27:18Yeah.
27:18Well, I have to say, you're very resilient.
27:22No, you are, because you're just like, whatever, it's taking longer, it's costing more money, just keep going.
27:27There's no point fighting it. It's not going to change anything.
27:29That's true, but that's still very resilient.
27:34Michelle's taken my design and doubled down, or should I say doubled up.
27:40But she needs to keep an eye on those costs.
27:44The house might be a building site, but the hovel's transformation is already impressive.
27:50This was the old toilet and bathroom.
27:54The old kitchen was in that tiny room there.
27:57And everything past this line is the new extension.
28:02It is huge.
28:04You've got a little light well in there.
28:07Tiny, tiny, mini space where we can get natural light coming at the extension and light into that back bedroom.
28:14And then you've got this amazing, huge skylight right in the middle of the space.
28:20And Michelle's got this idea for all of this steel work to be fully exposed and painted a very bright,
28:27punchy colour, which I think is brilliant.
28:30Kitchen's just been installed at the minute, still a long way to go, but so far, so good.
28:35And then at the very back, this'll all open up onto the garden.
28:41But the garden is an absolute mess.
28:45And my biggest worry is that Michelle's doing so much more work to the house and spending so much more
28:52money, there might not be any money left.
28:55And we can't leave it like that.
28:58With a predicted overspend of £30,000, Michelle will have her work cut out to even make the garden presentable.
29:08We're now 25 weeks into the build, and Michelle's sauna is coming together.
29:13She's even roped in her mum and dad.
29:16The garden has finally been cleared, but of course Michelle's not taken the straightforward option of a simple lawn.
29:24She's had an idea for a water feature, and its foundations are going in.
29:30Water features not only add a striking focal point to a garden, they also help create a unique and relaxing
29:38atmosphere, even in a busy city.
29:42With things in Windsor progressing well, my mind has turned to finishing touches.
29:47And I'd like to give Michelle something special to help inspire her to get cooking in her new kitchen.
29:59Konstantinos, very, very nice to meet you. I'm George, how are you?
30:03Master bladesmith Konstantinos Nuku has been hand crafting bespoke knives for almost a decade.
30:09The perfect housewarming gift for a newbie chef like Michelle.
30:15I need a very, very beautiful knife.
30:19You came to the right place.
30:21So what is the base material we have to work with?
30:24So we're going to be using this billet.
30:26We're going to be expanding the length, expanding the height, and then making it all nice and smooth.
30:31So you turn a blunt lump of metal like that into a piece of art like that?
30:36Yes.
30:37That's quite incredible.
30:40Konstantinos has letting me loose on a Japanese-style nikiri knife.
30:44From Michelle to prepare delicious meals for friends and family.
30:50So put it in and place it?
30:52Just put it in? Yeah, yeah.
30:52Just anywhere?
30:53Right in the centre where the hot spot of the forge is. Right there.
30:56There? Yes.
30:57A super hot furnace heats the blunt metal to 950 degrees until it's soft enough to shape.
31:05There?
31:06Yeah, go.
31:07Oh, I've got scared.
31:08Nice.
31:09Nice.
31:09Keep it up, keep it up.
31:13I'm really messed up now.
31:15It's okay.
31:15Just keep hammering.
31:17Keep it up, keep it up, keep it up.
31:20And stop.
31:21Back in.
31:23This might look simple, but trust me, it's far harder than it looks.
31:29It's surprising how...
31:31How bad that was.
31:33No, no.
31:34That's excellent.
31:35I panicked a bit.
31:36I teach a lot of courses and believe me, you're at the top 4%.
31:40Oh, I'll take the top 4%.
31:41I love the way it's so specific.
31:43Top 4%.
31:44I have...
31:45Yeah.
31:45Teaching is hard.
31:48And we're not done yet.
31:50There's more heating and hammering to get exactly the right thickness.
31:54And stop.
31:56Cool.
31:56I think we can get the rest of the geometry by hand.
32:01Finally, we beat the blade by hand to achieve the right shape.
32:08More force.
32:11That's great.
32:11I think we can stop now.
32:14That doesn't look great like that though.
32:15Good for peeling apples.
32:17Peeling apples.
32:18Maybe a watermelon.
32:22Over to the true artisan craftsman.
32:29It's good?
32:30Yeah.
32:31We're ready to file the cutting edge.
32:33A little more.
32:35Push, push, push.
32:36And finish it off.
32:38And stop there.
32:39Come off.
32:39Nice.
32:40Cool.
32:40Woo!
32:41Woo!
32:44And with the blade now made, all that's left to do is add a handle, give it a polish and
32:50a sharpen.
32:51So you can finish that off beautifully?
32:53Yes.
32:54I can't wait to see Michelle try it out in her new kitchen.
32:59Thank you very much.
33:00You're a master craftsman.
33:01Thanks for having me.
33:02Fantastic.
33:02Honestly, brilliant.
33:11It's now more than six months into the build.
33:15And though work is pushing forward, Michelle's money is fast running out.
33:21Today, we are putting the windows in.
33:27And then it will all be tiled and then it will be completely watertight.
33:32When the roof is complete, Michelle has sensibly decided to park the finishers in the loft conversion.
33:40They'll have to wait for another day when she's saved up more cash.
33:49In the rest of the house, it's all hands to the pump.
33:53Small tap.
33:55Click.
33:55Done.
33:59This renovation has been a baptism of fire for Michelle.
34:04It's taken far more time than expected.
34:07A lot more work.
34:10And more money.
34:18Amazing.
34:19I love it.
34:20I absolutely love it.
34:22I hope in the end, it's all worth it.
34:33In Windsor, Michelle has been living in her porky, dark bungalow for almost a decade.
34:43With my help and a determined team, she finally got started.
34:51It was her first renovation project and she's learnt on the job, sometimes the hard way.
34:58I've been rigorous in what I want.
35:01I'm quite stubborn when I want to be.
35:04With Michelle's changes to the plan, the build got bigger and more expensive.
35:13But almost a year on, it's finished.
35:19Ten months ago, Michelle began a renovation project that she'd been puzzling over for seven years.
35:26Now, my job was to come up with a scheme that brought all of her ideas together.
35:30But, as the months went on, the build and her budget expanded in every single direction.
35:38Now, it's time to see if she's turned the bungalow she described as a hovel into a home.
35:47Now, it's very clear that this is Michelle's house because look at her choice of colour on the front door.
35:55Bright neon red.
35:58You look at every single door in this neighbourhood and not one jumps out like this one.
36:03That is so Michelle, it's brilliant.
36:10Before, Michelle's bungalow was run down and unpleasant.
36:15The kitchen was tiny and with no dining area, socialising at home was almost impossible.
36:24A dingy bathroom and ramshackle lean-to divided the spaces, making it difficult to live in.
36:35Now, it's been completely transformed.
36:39The size of Michelle's home has almost doubled.
36:43She now has the stylish, bright, modern home she's always dreamt of.
36:50As soon as you walk through the front door, everything has completely changed.
36:55This was a really small bungalow, no first floor, really low ceilings and unbelievably dark.
37:03Now, you can see all the way up to the new loft conversion, right up to the ridgeline of the
37:09building.
37:10Two skylights flooding it with natural light.
37:13Just as I'd planned, there's a line of sight all the way down the hallway, through the new extension and
37:20out to the garden.
37:21Every single part of this house has been transformed and it's beautiful.
37:31The old bathroom has gone and the new one has been relocated to the side of the house.
37:38And what a spectacular new bathroom this is.
37:42That is luxury of the highest level.
37:46But there's not just a beautiful sink and a beautiful bath.
37:50There's more.
37:56In the smallest extension, this tiny little wedge has created the most wonderful space for Michelle's sauna.
38:05And all of the micro-cement finish on the inside of this space was all done by Michelle.
38:12And she's done a beautiful job.
38:15Minimal, elegant.
38:17It's on all the walls and the floor.
38:20It makes it feel like a poor spa.
38:22Oh!
38:27Michelle's old kitchen has become a functional new utility room.
38:34And where once was the dreadful lean-to, now sits a breathtaking extension.
38:42Now that is special.
38:46That is absolutely brilliant.
38:53And now Michelle has got the kitchen that she always dreamt of.
38:58Just look how beautiful this is.
39:01You've got over five metres of kitchen.
39:04An island unit that's over three metres long.
39:08Beautiful breakfast bar on the other side.
39:11And being able to stand and cook here all the time is seeing the entire space.
39:17There's floor-to-ceiling storage to hide any clutter and something extra.
39:23And because Michelle loves to socialise, entertain and get friends and family over for a drink,
39:29pride of place at the end of the kitchen run.
39:34Look at that for a drinks bar.
39:38And when Michelle said that she wanted an extension with lots of natural light, my word, we went for it.
39:47That is the most enormous lantern skylight right in the heart of the plan.
39:54One of the most important things Michelle wanted was a spot to entertain guests.
40:00She finally has a dining table.
40:04The dining table is beautifully positioned.
40:09It's perfect to be able to sit on Michelle's cast concrete bench.
40:15In this corner, with a beautiful corner window, as the sun comes round at the end of the day,
40:22you're going to get that gorgeous light coming through here.
40:28For me, that is my favourite position in the house.
40:37I'm loving the striking look and personal stamp Michelle's given the interior.
40:42Beautiful exposed brickwork wall, and then to top it all off, an exposed industrial column and beam painted in her
40:53favourite neon red.
40:56It's so cool, it's unbelievable.
40:59And to top it all, there's now a seamless connection to the outside.
41:04Watch this.
41:15Those beautiful industrial doors to slide and fold away to open the entire space out to the garden.
41:26It's beautiful.
41:28Michelle wanted to break out of the hovel into a large, bright, auburn-planned space.
41:36So what does she make of her new house?
41:40Not too shabby.
41:41Not too shabby at all.
41:44At last, you've got a home now.
41:47I do.
41:48Not so much of a hovel anymore.
41:50It's not a hovel in the slightest.
41:53Yeah, I'm really pleased.
41:54Are you?
41:55Yeah, I am delighted with it.
41:56It's entertaining must be fantastic.
41:58Oh, it's brilliant.
41:58What's it been like when you've had everyone round?
42:00It's just brilliant to be able to have the whole space, everyone spread out, and yeah, there's been lots of
42:04karaoke and dance.
42:07It's a pretty sturdy counter.
42:09LAUGHTER
42:13So after all the time, effort and cash, how does it feel to finally have the space Michelle's always dreamed
42:19of?
42:20It feels a bit surreal, to be honest. Like, this is real now. And I live here. I feel like
42:25a proper grown-up.
42:28LAUGHTER
42:29Do you know what? A lot of the touches that you've put into this place are really magical.
42:33You've managed to blend Scandinavian modernism with kind of industrial warehouse style in a bungalow.
42:41LAUGHTER
42:41I don't think anyone's pulled that off before.
42:43Honestly, it's like putting it in an architectural mixer. You've chucked all these bits in, you've pushed the button, it's
42:49all been blended together.
42:50I mean, I've travelled a lot and I think it's just taken all of those different things I've seen over
42:55the years and just kind of gone, what's my house? I'll do what I want in it.
42:58LAUGHTER
42:59And why not? Well, I have to say, you've done a brilliant job.
43:03Aw, thank you.
43:07There's now a stunning connection to the garden with a charming spot to entertain outdoors.
43:13That's beautiful.
43:14I know, a lot.
43:16I love the way that you've gone. Do you know what? Money's running out.
43:19Mm-hm.
43:20Let's not worry about that end of the garden, focus the money right here where it matters, right alongside the
43:25new extension.
43:26Yep.
43:26The patio's beautiful. I love these slabs. Absolutely gorgeous.
43:30True to form, Michelle's gone for something a little different with a bespoke water feature.
43:36And then you've got your gorgeous copper tree.
43:39Do you want to see the best bit?
43:40Come on.
43:44Give it a minute. It needs to warm up.
43:48Look at that.
43:51Fantastic.
43:51I know.
43:52Do you know what? This has been on my bucket list forever.
43:54So I saw this in a garden centre in Ireland.
43:57It must be 15, 20 years ago.
44:00No.
44:01I swear.
44:01Come on, let's have a drink.
44:02Yeah, OK.
44:03I think it's time to celebrate.
44:05Michelle's determination is impressive.
44:08Tough question.
44:10Budget.
44:12I'm actually genuinely scared to ask.
44:14How much have you spent on the whole job?
44:17Uh, 250.
44:19That's £70,000 over Michelle's budget for the ground floor and the additional loft.
44:26But it's definitely been worth it.
44:31I knew it was going to be good.
44:32But this is better than I thought.
44:35Time to celebrate this epic achievement.
44:39Woo!
44:40Woohoo!
44:45Cheers.
44:46Congratulations.
44:47Thank you very much.
44:48Welcome back to your beautiful home.
44:49Thank you for all the help.
44:51It's amazing.
44:51And you've got a spa.
44:52I know.
44:53Well posh.
44:54I nearly forgot.
44:55I've got a gift for you.
44:56Now.
44:56OK.
44:57You know you said that you need to, let's say, embellish your cooking skills.
45:02Learn to cook.
45:03Learn to cook.
45:06I thought I'd have something made.
45:10This is hand-forged.
45:15A beautiful handmade knife.
45:18Amazing.
45:19Hand-forged.
45:19And do you know what?
45:20I kind of helped make a bit of it.
45:22The knife maker who was outstanding finished it off.
45:25And that's been specially made for you.
45:27That is lovely.
45:28So when you become a chef, you can use that.
45:30I'm joking.
45:31You won't be waiting a while.
45:36Next time in Bedfordshire, Charlene and Matt have moved three times in less than five years.
45:43Every house has never been right.
45:47Can I finally help them?
45:49You've got everything.
45:50Everything goes on in here.
45:52Get this place sorted.
45:54We need to rebuild the extension.
45:56Oh, love it.
45:57I think that's so clever.
45:58And build their forever home.
46:01We really should have just moved home.
46:07Animals falling down mine shafts really is a thing.
46:10Who knew?
46:11Rescue missions in our farm next door here on Channel 4 tomorrow at 8.
46:15Up next, social media to the rescue.
46:17It might just help to unravel a long-running mystery.
46:2124 hours in police custody.
46:30That's a huge issue for you by leaving Europe now.
46:31Let's go to날 unit's program.
46:31From the roz 높 New York City.
46:32What ever happened to you?
46:33There was no ID making it sent.
46:33The rest of this program is fantastic.
46:34There had to go ahead and take a few pok
46:34I've got toattack where hell hepatitis has now thrown in and dos.
