00:00All right, here we go. The Knicks, they are bringing the band back. At least they're trying
00:04to. Most of the band news coming down via Sham Sharania. The Knicks will re-sign Landry Shamit
00:11to a four-year, $24 million deal. This is great for the Knicks. We know all the reports that have
00:18been out there about them trying to stay under the second apron after James Dolan went on WFAN
00:23and talked about this is what he wanted to do, and it'd be very expensive to keep this team.
00:27There was a lot of talk about whether the Knicks would be able to bring back both Landry
00:30Shamit and Mitchell Robinson. We knew it'd be difficult for them to bring back both and
00:35stay under the second apron. However, they bring back Landry Shamit. Four years, $24 million,
00:41really good deal for both sides. Once again, I think Landry Shamit could have got more than this
00:46on the open market, and it sounds like from some reporting, Ian Begley of SNY has reported this,
00:52and Sham Sharania also talked about this, that he could have fielded offers from other suitors that
00:56would have been more than what the Knicks could have offered him. The Knicks get him at an annual
01:00average value of $6 million. Landry Shamit, who played the last couple of years on a non-guaranteed
01:06deal, now gets that security that I'm sure he'd been looking for. He gets four years in this deal.
01:12Seems to me like the years were more important to him than necessarily the annual average value,
01:17because I do think he could have got more on this open market. Maybe somebody would have gave them
01:21$8 or $9 million per, maybe even higher on a shorter-term deal, but he's able to cash in for
01:26the years. And for Landry Shamit, yes, you have to feel good for him because of what he has rewarded
01:32his team with, his three-point shooting, his on-the-ball defense over the last couple of years,
01:36and then Mike Brown trusting in him this season. And that's a huge part of why I think Landry Shamit
01:42still will be here, his relationship with Mike Brown. Mike Brown trusting him in a lot of key
01:45situations, even when he fell out of the rotation during the playoffs, early in the playoffs again,
01:50Atlanta still had faith to bring him back in. And we know the dividends that Landry Shamit paid
01:55for the Knicks during this championship run. So if you're a Knicks fan, I think you should be
01:59absolutely excited about this. Now, look, here's where a lot of fans are going to go to and where
02:04their minds are going to go. All right, we know bringing DOR back was a priority for the club.
02:10The Knicks were able to re-sign him to a multi-year deal. Jose Alvarado, business has been
02:15taken care of with him. He also signs a multi-year deal. And now Landry Shamit also on a multi
02:20-year
02:20deal, four years, $24 million. But all those guys seem to be priorities for the club. And we do get
02:26that. But are the Knicks still really trying to stay on the second apron? If they are going to
02:31try to stay on the second apron, then it's going to be very difficult for them now to retain Mitchell
02:35Robinson, who we think will get a lot more money on an annual average value. What happens in the next
02:4124 to 48 hours will be very telling in terms of what goes down with the Knicks? Will they be
02:46willing
02:47to exceed the second apron to keep Mitchell Robinson? Will they look at cheaper options
02:51for the center position to try to move forward? But if you're a Knicks fan, you kind of got to
02:58be
02:58happy right now that they brought most of the bench back. I know some won't be happy unless the whole
03:03gang is back, unless the whole squad is back, unless Mitchell Robinson is back along with Landry
03:08Shamit. But in this second apron, you have to make some difficult decisions. In the second apron
03:12error, you have to make some difficult decisions. And this is what might come down to. Would I like
03:17to see the whole team come back? Yes, I do think it'll be the right move. But I also understand
03:21if
03:21that is not going to be the case, this front office has also shown enough of the ability between Leon
03:26Rose and Brock Aller to be very creative with things. But for Landry Shamit, I think, and for the
03:33Knicks going forward, you were going to need his three-point shooting. You were going to need his
03:37defense going forward. You were going to need another guy who knew how to win within this system,
03:42who you could trust, not just throughout the regular season, but in big-time playoff moments,
03:47as we saw during this last playoff run. So this is a great value contract for one of the better
03:52shooters in the league, somebody who's a really good defender. I think you have to be happy for him.
03:57And I think when you look at the entire picture and the fact that he had the opportunity
04:00to sign bigger offers from other contenders, he really wanted to be here in New York. And that's
04:06what I had heard from a lot of people. And a lot of people around the Knicks had been saying
04:10this
04:10guy wanted to stay here in New York, and now he's going to be with the Knicks for the foreseeable
04:14future. So I understand while Knicks fans should be elated by this and they should be happy about
04:19this, I understand that so much of the attention is now going to turn to be like, okay, what's going
04:25to happen with Mitchell Robinson? Got to be patient. Got to wait and see. It'll be interesting to see how
04:30the Knicks pivot. But if I was forecasting things, if I was projecting things right here,
04:34just looking at the numbers and how much room the Knicks have in terms of money to stay below the
04:40second apron, if that is what is desired for them to do, as James Dolan talked about, it is going
04:46to
04:46be very difficult for them to retain Mitchell Robinson services at the numbers that you think he would be
04:53able to get on the open market. Mitchell Robinson would have to take a very, very steep discount.
04:58But look, you never know. Stranger things have happened. We've seen a lot of things happen.
05:03But I think if you're a Knicks fan that is looking for this team to keep the team together or
05:08most of
05:09the team together, as we approach the start of free agency tomorrow at 6 p.m., most of the guys
05:16on the
05:17bench, the key guys that they wanted to re-sign, they have been able to bring back. Now, there's still
05:22some others they could bring back. Our own Stefan Bondi has talked about, he has heard that Jordan
05:27Clarkson is likely to be brought back or there's interest, strong interest in him being brought
05:32back. So we'll see if that happens. If they don't bring back Mitch, what happens with a
05:36Aria Porti? Is he somebody that could come back? So it's going to be very interesting. However, I do
05:41think in terms of priority, as much as you would want Mitchell Robinson's defense and his rebounding
05:47and his lob threat ability, you would love all that on the team. I do think the Knicks have brought
05:53back some other key guys on the bench. They absolutely had to. And Landry Shamit, being a
05:57guy who's a three and D player, we know how valuable those guys are in the NBA right now and
06:03on the open
06:03market to get him to sign for a four-year, $24 million deal feels like a huge victory for the
06:10New York Knicks. And now we're going to see where they go from here. But the Knicks getting business
06:14done, getting a bunch of their free agents re-signed before the start of free agency, that is huge.
06:20And now we'll just have to wait and see what happens with Mitchell Robinson's. But what I
06:24would say, Knicks fans, try to breathe a little bit easy, see what the Knicks can do, try to have
06:32some faith in the front office and what you've seen them do thus far over the years in building
06:36this team. It'd be nice to see the whole gang come back, but it's looking a little difficult
06:40right now. And we'll know by tomorrow if this team really intends to go over the second apron
06:46or not. But for now, Landry Shamit back in the fold with the New York Knicks to run it back
06:51for the 2026-2027 NBA season.
