00:04Hi, this is Mariah Gullow from The Hollywood Reporter and I'm in studio today with Kellen Lutz.
00:09Hey.
00:10Hi Kellen, how are you?
00:11I'm great.
00:12We are here to talk about a movie that's out now that you are in called Seven Guardians of the
00:18Tomb.
00:18Yes, Seven Guardians of the Tomb.
00:20Okay, so I saw this movie. Oh my god, I can't even with the spiders.
00:27They're CGI, I mean for the most part they're all CGI, but we had some practical ones.
00:34You had some real spiders on set.
00:35Yeah, we did. It's kind of like my own Indiana Jones meets Arachnophobia.
00:41Yes.
00:41Which is that movie, both. I mean I'm a huge Harrison Ford fan, but I love the action and adventure,
00:47the archeology.
00:48Archeology, say it for me, you got it.
00:50Yeah, archeology.
00:52Yes, that word, that one, tongue twister.
00:57The kind of storyline where you have this quest that you have to discover and find and then you mix
01:04in some killer spiders and it makes it really, really, really fun adventure to watch.
01:09Yeah, I have to say like the spiders aren't my favorite genre, but I'm right there with you on archeology.
01:15Archeology.
01:16I grew up as an Indiana Jones fan.
01:18Who did it?
01:19Yeah, I mean that idea, like it's also video games that you played, like Tomb Raider. I played Tomb Raider
01:23when I was growing up.
01:24On PC?
01:27I think it was on, I want to say PlayStation. I think it was like an early PlayStation game.
01:31Gotcha. I only had the PC one.
01:33Cool, well that's cool. You get like cool nerd points for that.
01:36Thanks.
01:39But yeah, like that idea that you're like, you're going through this really scary place not knowing what to find
01:44and all of these cool relics are around you.
01:47Yeah, and that's another fun part of the movie with Kimball, who is our director, amazing director.
01:54The set pieces, we had this kind of pay the homage to Indiana Jones or The Mummy with Brandon Fraser
02:01where you punch something and a door moves or you step on something and like the secret passage opens up.
02:10I love movies like that and I've never been in a movie that had those before.
02:15Yeah.
02:15So I was just like a kid on this movie set.
02:19It was just a lot of fun.
02:20And you did most of your filming in Australia?
02:22Yeah, it's a co-production with China and I did most of my filming in Gold Coast, Australia.
02:29Wow, wow.
02:30So now you grew up in kind of the Badlands areas of the United States, you grew up in the
02:35Dakotas and you also grew up in Arizona.
02:37Iowa, Arizona.
02:39Oh, right.
02:39Yeah.
02:39So did you have like this fascination with archaeology early on in life?
02:44Just kind of being around those areas.
02:46Now that you mention it, my grandfather in Iowa, we had a farm and he would take us out to
02:52find arrowheads.
02:54Oh, very cool.
02:54Obviously a lot of boys.
02:55I have six brothers and one sister and we love sharp objects.
02:58So he had all these Indian artifacts and we would just always hunt for like really cool arrowheads and we'd
03:07always find them.
03:07So you also did your own stunts?
03:09Yeah, I love doing my own stunts.
03:10I know you always try to do your own stunts.
03:11I know you always try to do your own stunts.
03:11This one was a bit on the easier side as far as stunts.
03:14There weren't any, I mean I had a motorcycle scene, but again that's just like start here, drive, slide, park.
03:20So that's not necessarily a stunt I've been riding for a while.
03:25And then a couple little jumping over a ravine or the lava pit, but you're on a harness.
03:32I love doing stunts.
03:34I really do.
03:35Yeah.
03:35So this is also the 10th anniversary of the Twilight movie.
03:40Yeah.
03:40It's been 10 years.
03:42Can you believe that?
03:44No, I really, it's flown by.
03:47I look back at interviews or photos from back then and man I was a baby.
03:52Yeah.
03:53I was a little baby.
03:54And I loved it though.
03:56It really was.
03:57I wish I was able to, like if I could go back and do it again, I think I'd be
04:02able to remember more of it.
04:04I think when you're just thrown into something, it takes off on such an exponential level that you get lost
04:11in the flashing lights and the glitz and glamour.
04:18But the moments, and I do remember a lot of the moments, they were super, it was a special memory
04:25in life.
04:26Yeah.
04:26And moment in life and chapter in life.
04:28And it's been 10 years and it seems like it was yesterday.
04:31Yeah.
04:32Well, I have a couple of questions to try to jog your memory.
04:35Okay.
04:35Okay.
04:36But I want to be respectful.
04:38These are fun questions.
04:40All right.
04:40If you don't want to answer them, just say pass.
04:43Okay.
04:44But here's, here we go.
04:48I stole blank from the set of Twilight.
04:55I stole blank from the set.
04:57I have a few things from my character.
04:59I stole my hat, my jacket.
05:04There's something in the Jeep that I really liked.
05:08And I can't remember.
05:09It was like a knob or something.
05:10Because I always wanted to get a Jeep Wrangler.
05:12That's what we had as the character.
05:15I stole a lot of craft service food.
05:17I brought it back to my hotel room because I was like, I can save some money.
05:20I don't have to go shopping.
05:21Did you have like a duffel bag that you would fill up?
05:24I'm known to bring in quite large bags to set.
05:29Yeah.
05:29Protein bars and tea.
05:31Very easy to steal off sets.
05:32I mean, we had it good on that set.
05:34After the first movie, the first movie was a bit raw.
05:36It was very independent.
05:37We didn't have the biggest craft service.
05:39But man, towards the end of it, I was making sandwiches for like days.
05:43Like if it was a long weekend, I'd make some nice seven-letter sandwiches.
05:47They gave you the to-go packages too.
05:48So it's not stealing.
05:49I mean, they wouldn't give it.
05:50I'd take it.
05:51So I had some good eats.
05:54Nice.
05:55Nice.
05:56If I couldn't be Emmett Cullen, I would have been blank.
06:04I don't even want to answer that.
06:06I loved my character so much.
06:08He was just so much fun.
06:09I know he wasn't the biggest character dialogue-wise, but personality-wise, I just loved him.
06:15I don't think I'd be...
06:16If they ever did a remake, I could see myself playing Dr. Carlisle, our father.
06:25Nice.
06:25Very nice.
06:27If I could have an extra scene with a main character, it would have been blank and I would have
06:33blanked them.
06:37Well, I always wish...
06:38That's a funny question.
06:39I always wish that we had the scene with Rosalie, Nikki Reed in my character, and the little passage that
06:48Stephanie left out called Emmett and the Bear.
06:51Yes.
06:51And it all shows my backstory of how I became a vampire and why Rosalie saved me.
06:57And just seeing that moment, you never really had that flashback from my character, so I would have loved to
07:04have had that.
07:05That would have been a pretty cool movie in itself.
07:07It would have been fun to have some, you know, super romantic scenes with Nikki Reed as our characters.
07:12Oh, nice.
07:12Well, that leads into my next question.
07:14I had a secret on-set crush on blank.
07:18Well, it's one of those few movies where I didn't in a very weird way because I think most people
07:25had it on Ashley, but I was best friends with Ashley.
07:28Yeah.
07:28So I was never...
07:29She was like a sister.
07:30I've known her for way too long.
07:32And then Nikki, Nikki, she's such a tough cookie, you know, kind of like Michelle Rodriguez, where it's just too
07:44tough.
07:44Yeah.
07:46For me, like, I like a little bit more of a softer woman.
07:50Mm-hmm.
07:51And then Kristen, again, she's a tough, tough woman as well.
07:55Too many badasses on that side.
07:57Yeah.
07:57Yeah.
07:58There were a few Dakota Fanning's sweetheart.
08:02I'm into brunettes.
08:04And then some of the, like, the other vampires.
08:09And you know who I would have, if I thought about it, I was a little young, but...
08:14Kristen's mom in the movie.
08:16Oh, nice.
08:18Why not?
08:20Let's go with that.
08:20Excellent.
08:22One word to describe the Robson phenomenon would be blank.
08:26I think it was beautiful, being a part of it.
08:30I could see why it happens.
08:32The books were written beautifully for those two characters.
08:37Mm-hmm.
08:38And naturally, they just gravitate towards each other.
08:41Exceptional actors and actresses.
08:45It was beautiful.
08:46I wish...
08:47It would have been cool if it lasted.
08:48But you can see why we're young and we're in this franchise, how there's a lot of things pulling at
08:54you in different directions.
08:55Yeah.
08:56But it was beautiful while it lasted.
08:57Oh, that's sweet.
08:59Speaking of which, there's another huge kind of cultural phenomenon movie franchise that just ended that was based on Twilight
09:07fan fiction.
09:08Yeah, that's what I was trying to think of.
09:09Fifty Shades of Grey.
09:11Dakota and Jamie, but they aren't dating.
09:15So I was like, well, I can't really make that reference.
09:18But yeah.
09:18Have you seen that series?
09:20Or do you...
09:20You know what?
09:21I tried to, when I first auditioned for it, I was trying to read the books.
09:27And then I just couldn't really read the books.
09:29So then I got the audio book.
09:30And I had...
09:32The girl's voice reading it.
09:34I was like, I can't even do this.
09:35This is just...
09:36I can't...
09:37I actually cannot even imagine listening to the audio book of Fifty Shades.
09:42Yeah.
09:43And it's...
09:43Congrats to the fan fiction of it all.
09:46Yeah.
09:46And Elliot was based off my character, I believe.
09:50Mm-hmm.
09:51I saw the first one.
09:53And I think that's about it.
09:56They're cool.
09:57You know, they're entertaining.
09:59Yeah.
09:59And that's what they're made...
10:00Made to be.
10:01I think every movie is.
10:02But there's only three movies, right?
10:03Mm-hmm.
10:04Yeah.
10:05I wonder why it's so short.
10:06You guys beat them.
10:07I know.
10:08Sorry.
10:10My favorite Twilight movie was blank because of blank.
10:13Breaking Dawn.
10:15Working with Bill Condon.
10:17Mm-hmm.
10:18We had the most money, so the production value was...
10:20Nice.
10:21...the best, and we had the best catering.
10:23It was the money.
10:26Becoming instantly famous was hard because of blank.
10:31No one...
10:33No one teaches you how to deal with it.
10:35Mm-hmm.
10:36You know, it's...
10:38They just kind of expect you to roll with it?
10:40I don't know if there's any expectation.
10:42Well, it's just like you're at such a young age, and I'm very grateful that I had some movies
10:48under my belt so I understood working with famous people.
10:51Mm-hmm.
10:52But then being a part of that instant fame, it doesn't prepare you for, like, paparazzi.
11:01Yeah.
11:02And people violating your privacy.
11:05Right.
11:05And you having to have the business sense to be conscious of, like, for myself, I live
11:14on the west side going to the beach, how that might be perceived.
11:17Kellen at the beach again, topless.
11:20He just wants to be known as a hunk who's, like, for his body, and that's the last thing
11:24that I could care about.
11:25And it sucks.
11:26Like, I'm not one to Google myself.
11:30There was a period in time during the first movie where we all did, and I realized that
11:36it's more destructive than beneficial to one's spiritual climate, and one bad comic can
11:45just derail your whole day, so it's just not even worth entertaining.
11:49So it definitely just doesn't prepare you for what instant fame is and what all comes
11:56with it.
11:57Okay, last question.
11:59Mm-hmm.
11:59The craziest thing I got just because I was in Twilight was?
12:04Any weird swag?
12:06Any, like...
12:06I got an Audi S5.
12:09Ooh!
12:09Which was dope.
12:10I mean, I loved...
12:12Thinking back, yeah, that was...
12:15Thank you, Audi.
12:17And whenever you want to send that back, you know, I will be more than happy to drive
12:22it again for you.
12:23That was...
12:23I remember when they were doing that leasing program, and they asked.
12:28Super sweet.
12:29And I loved that card.
12:30It made me a huge fan of Audi.
12:32I really did.
12:33Excellent.
12:34Excellent.
12:35Well, I would like to end it there, but I want to just say one more thing.
12:38I know that you're very interested in working on charities.
12:42Mm-hmm.
12:43And I wanted to know if there's anything that you want to discuss today, because we did
12:46talk about the price of fame, but one of the advantages of fame is that you get to kind
12:52of promote some good values.
12:52Well, thank you very much.
12:54I appreciate that.
12:56Saving Innocence is a charity near and dear to my heart.
12:59My good friend Kim Biddle started it, and it deals with kids here in L.A. who are being
13:04trafficked for sex, exploitation, and it's a sad thing because a lot of people move here,
13:11they leave home, they chase this dream, and they think if they can just make it to L.A.
13:16that they will become famous or they will fulfill their dreams.
13:21And what happens is it's not just getting to L.A.
13:25It's getting to the right people and places here and find a safe community.
13:31So when you leave your family at home and you take this risk, a lot of times people will
13:37pick them up, men and women.
13:40I think the average age is 12 years old.
13:43They will taunt them and put the carrot out there saying, hey, you want to be in my music
13:49video?
13:49You want to, I'll make you famous, like come here.
13:52And then they get taken and used.
13:57So it's a sad, sad thing how often it happens in Los Angeles and all over the world.
14:02But this is home for me.
14:04And so I'll go on some stakeouts and we'll see the kids.
14:08There's a house called the Hope House that we actually rescue as many as we can.
14:14And we put them there and we give them that new hope.
14:17So it's a beautiful thing.
14:19Check it out.
14:20Saving Innocence.
14:21And just thank you.
14:23That's very lovely.
14:24Thank you, Kellen Lutz.
14:25Thank you for being here.
14:26And check out his new movie, Seven Guardians of the Tomb.
14:30Seven Guardians of the Tomb.
14:31Out now.
