00:01On June 16 last year, Constable Keith Smith and Sergeant Gavin Rigby attended a North
00:08Motten property in North West Tasmania to serve a repossession notice for Lee Susham's home.
00:15The Supreme Court in Burnie has heard that Susham's knew they were coming and lay in
00:19wait in his carport with a rifle.
00:22Constable Smith's previous interactions with Susham's had been amicable, so police had
00:27designated the day's plan as low risk.
00:30That quickly changed as Susham stood in his carport, raised a rifle and pointed it at Sergeant
00:37Rigby, who was able to flee.
00:39He then killed Constable Smith with two shots in quick succession.
00:44He was arrested and later pleaded guilty to Constable Smith's murder and was today sentenced
00:50by Justice Tamara Jago in the Burnie Supreme Court.
00:54She said, it was a premeditated killing of a police officer who was just there to do
00:59his job.
01:00She said, the callousness you displayed is almost beyond comprehension for any person with
01:07a decent sense of morality.
01:09She said the killing had devastated his family, Tasmania police and the wider Tasmanian community.
01:16Justice Jago jailed Susham's for 40 years and ordered a non-parole period of 25 years, meaning
01:23he will not be eligible for freedom until he is 72 years old.
01:28Keith's family say they hope he will be remembered for who he was and not how he was lost.
01:35He is very low he is 80 years old and he just lost.
01:36We've got each other offensive good one.
01:36And he took things out of a grief during this winter, he told us, he will be wounded while
01:36even before he is恭 Gibby.
01:36And he told us the Titans, he told us that he is 42 years old.
01:36You know letzten weeks so that then, the last week has been a great answer to the
01:36By September 29, April 20, April 20, April 20, April 20, April 10, April 20th.
01:36But there have been a great newsman who has been a big multi-s workshops
