02:48everybody's been going and in normal circumstances that's a pass a hundred
02:52times out of a hundred but it's really the ruts that that held that pass up he
02:55makes the pass anyway a couple corners later still got work to do he's still

03:00I'll tell you what great writing that from Paul's Jonas wasn't going to take

03:37that's tail as old as time but as we said in the MX2 race you know by the
03:44owl folds the front how did he stay up from that lucky he was going downhill
03:50we both flinched as we saw this here look falls in front and the body language there was
03:54like pull back that scrub pull it back scrub unintended yeah we're keeping a real
04:01goes wrong right there anyway he's barely blinked and finds himself back on the
04:07rear wheel and Paul's Jonas fighting for that sixth place so good save even better

04:15never up to fit got guys so about one and a half seconds further up track I like
04:20what Robert was doing in time practice this morning just kind of the way that he
04:24was drifting through some of those corners you know his kind of mo really in
04:28many many respects but now that it's a little bit sort of edgy and you know you've
04:33got all these accelerated bugs and things like that you're not able to do that
04:36quite as efficiently which means you've then got to go to plan B which is search
04:40for something else yeah which is what Tom Bale's doing here gets alongside Jonas
04:44is going to squeeze him here to the inside exactly all of a sudden finds
04:49himself up in the sixth place see if Jonas tries to the same maneuver he pulled on
04:52his Roman last lap go outside and then just force the issue in this next double
04:57Tom a little bit too smart for that says no I'll just walk it before you can't yeah just a
05:10story pat and Leonardo Leonardo yeah yeah easy for you sir yeah
05:19yeah still not clear of Jonas and just behind them look a desperate and Treo
05:27D'Armo because going from what second or third through the first couple of corners
05:30down to eighth in quick succession he knows he's got to make up for that and
05:34he's gonna start with Paul's Jonas right there ahead of him great ride another great
05:39ride and actually another good start for Mario Oliveira privateer based KTM with
05:44the Gabriel S's 24 squad yeah he said you know it's been a little bit inconsistent
05:48haven't seen the flash every weekend but when he's on he's had some really
05:52impressive rides
05:56right back at the top end of the circuit then turn to D'Armo
06:02just down into the final turn he tries to get back onto the rear wheel of the
06:07Kaosaki ahead of him of Paul's Jonas these two fighting over 7th place then we've got
06:11Olivier and Renault Renault has moved into 10th
06:14Valandran dropping out of that top 10 into 11th on the Red Bull Ducati so in the
06:20space of half a lap Renault moving forward
06:27see the shadowing of those breaking bumps there from above at the end of pit lane and
06:32the sort of dark defined lines through that next right hander just to signify how deep
06:37some of those ruts are with the Sun being on one side of the track you know
06:41obviously there's a lot of shadowing in those ruts as well so you don't really see
06:44how deep they are until you hit them right this gap here 1.5 seconds nothing in it
06:49between the Red Bull KTM and the Honda HRC Petronas of Coonan and Hurlings replay of the start
06:54they're both in gates one and two Coonan gets a better jump
07:00Adamo thought he had it
07:03cap far wide he had to go then Coonan nice and tight to the inside
07:08Hurlings emerge in about fourth place there
07:10yeah you see Lucas really smart that he pressed deep first
07:13then check up basically he's just pacing Adamo onto this outside once Adamo
07:18relents right there then he can actually cut back inside it was a little new on
07:23stuff but look at Jeffrey Jeffrey's in the fight now yeah impressive from Geister as
07:26well because he got pinched early on and made the decision to go back off cut to
07:30the inside and he emerged quite well and he's now in fourth place at this point of
07:35the racetrack so yeah look at Jeffrey Hurlings definitely got the bit between his
07:38teeth
07:40it's not a kind of rider that gets the elbows out and sort of does the block
07:44pass and rides dirty he tries to keep it clean he tries to be respectful and I think
07:49you know respect goes both ways doesn't it if you're sort of clean and fair you get
07:53the same but this was the last lap of the world championship fight I think
07:58anything goes doesn't it whether you're Lucas or Jeffrey Jeffrey's been doing this a
08:03long time he understands there's a there's a time and a place for everything right I
08:07I think for Jeffrey he would love nothing more to just send a message and pass him
08:12cleanly and be able to pull away but that's way more damaging to a rider's
08:16side than going in and knocking somebody down
08:18you know that just pisses them off it just makes them really angry passing them and
08:22pulling away just with more pace it's really hard to swallow as the if this
08:26happens to Lucas yeah that'll step up both making their turn through there do like
08:34this little addition here so double double double all the way through we've seen if
08:38you park somebody on the inside you really cut off their their flow Hurlings is good
08:42on this side of the racetrack it seems because he's starting to reel in again didn't get
08:46over there though the triple on the dragon's back
08:51can't take your eyes off of this though can you Hurlings was quickest last time
08:54around 148.6 compared to 149.1 not a lot in it
09:00can't afford to fold the front like that either just indicative of how hard he's
09:05having to push to keep the I'm going to say the young pretender anymore at bay face
09:10full of roost there for the trouble rear wheel sandwich
09:15drop control from both of them absolutely impeccable through that left turn Hurlings
09:19doubling into that corner and if Coonan wasn't there you just know he would have railed a
09:23bit more got a bit more speed out of the job as well
09:28that's really tricky when you you know you're watching and you see the front front
09:32step step and they're having to catch at the front and the rear tells me how hard
09:37they're pushing for a woman it just tells you how tricky the track conditions are
09:40yeah Hurlings has favored this either outside or stepping over that little sort
09:44of transfer earlier on in time practice but neither really sort of working better
09:50than the other you know so one way or the other so but he knew that couldn't
09:55afford to give Lucas Coonan a whole shot that's exactly what happened
10:01he's having to sort of go full sort of beast mode if you like you know to coin
10:07a phrase just to keep Coonan in his sight was aggressive at the first couple of
10:11corners as he had to be to get himself into second just to give him a shot that
10:16being this close to try and apply the pressure but as we've seen throughout the
10:19year takes a lot to crack the mind of Lucas Coonan at the moment such as the
10:24confidence but such as that youthful exuberance as well you know that believes
10:28he can do anything yeah and I you know it seems like okay yes it's just a
10:33qualifying race and the differential would just be one point swing either
10:36way that's all in play but the psychological battle if Jeffrey can
10:40pass it because we haven't seen a lot of that then passing each other we've seen a
10:43lot of them racing with each other but not a lot of passing each other and then
10:47also that all important gate pick for Sunday getting all of that room to your left to
10:51maneuver even if your jumps not very good Allah Sasha in the MX2 race no problem I'll
10:55just move over to my left and guard the inside all of that I believe is much
10:59more important than the one point differential here yeah
11:031.4 now the gap so Lucas just gaining another 3 tenths in that last sector
11:10Fernandez not gone far there are these only 2.7 seconds behind hurlings then guy
11:16said two and a half behind him for his best lap in last time around including the
11:20fastest time in sector 2 which is from the right hand just at the end of pit lane
11:26where you drop into that right hand turn turn 8 to after the dragon's back over on
11:31the far side of circuit through the dip and up into that left turn 14
11:35just kind of watching these two they're taking a lot of different lines and
11:39Jeffrey not wanting to follow so much but you see them like they'll go inside here
11:44shorten the racetrack up can't be very aggressive on the throttle right so it's
11:48do you want to go inside stay a little bit calmer shorten the racetrack or do you
11:52want to carry all that speed and be really aggressive around the outside they
11:54seem to be about the same but you have to approach them very differently just
11:57looking at a handguard on the right side of Jeffrey Hurlings looks like it's
12:00dropped down a little bit so whether being aggressive on those first few
12:03corners just just drop down a little bit don't think it'll affect him too much
12:07you know a little bit of roost here and there and stuff but just
12:09aesthetically you know when you sort of
12:12I don't know something but something I've just noticed there that's just a
12:16little bit further down that it needs to be it could be annoying yeah it's
12:19probably not slowing them down a lot but annoying oh yeah you can see it's
12:22definitely looks like the balls are twisted but they're not yeah I didn't
12:26like running hand guards simply for that reason it just seemed like one more
12:29thing that could go wrong but also you know it could go really wrong is a broken
12:33knuckle from a rock to the hand yeah oh yeah it's give and take I guess yeah well I
12:38guess we neither had those that from a rock we got lucky tell you what look at
12:43this performance here from Ruben Fernandez under HRC Petronas put it at a
12:48home sort of performance really as we said at the start of the race lives about an
12:53hour and a half or so from here north just over the border into northern Spain
12:57grew up racing in and around this area one of his favorite tracks if not his
13:01favorite track and you know Spanish fans Portuguese fans like seeing him here and
13:06here he is in third not too far behind his teammate and mixing it you say there's only three and
13:12a
13:12half seconds between first second and third at the moment that is a good shift good good
13:17start to the weekend for Fernandez who had that big crash in time practice a week ago in Italy it
13:22was a
13:22bit secondhand for the race on Sunday but talk about bouncing back back that shot of
13:26adrenaline that the home GP creates yeah he's been just sitting out of outside of the
13:30camera shots we haven't talked about him a lot but he's right there you know his pace is
13:33obviously right on form with the other guys last lap is actually quicker than
13:37Jeffrey so good to see how it was standing outside the Honda HRC Petronas
13:41earlier just a huge crowd of of course Spanish fans that have made the drive
13:45over so I'm sure he's gotten a little boost as you mentioned
13:48Renault's moved up in tonight and his way past Oriol Oliver so Oliver now has about
13:53three and a half seconds three point six seconds on Calvin Belandrin who will obviously try and push as hard
14:00as he can to the next six minutes plus two to get that final point
14:03here's Geiser and Fevra battle these two fights over fourth place so the Monterey Yamaha and that
14:10actually Kawasaki all of a sudden Herlings has got another sniff of Lucas Kunin
14:18as he looks to pounce again gap less than a second for the first time in a few laps eight
14:23tenths
14:26so Kunin knows he can't ah came up short there Herlings
14:32that's a Kunin knows he definitely can't afford to relax but but Herlings is this close he's not
14:36backing off even right until the final corner right until the flag a little bit of a yo-yo you
14:42know seems
14:42like a mistake bring Jeffrey back to the fight then he'll maybe you know just not have an ideal
14:47corner Lucas to stretch it back out he's pushing though isn't it absolutely pushing Giacomo in the
14:54time practice he's went down in did the pit lane report and just asked him you know the problems
15:01that you had from a couple of rounds are they all behind you and he said yeah yeah you know
15:06we knew
15:06what the problem was and we ticked all the boxes we basically solved everything now they feel that
15:11they're not going to have any more issues so that's good positive news yeah I was uh I was asking
15:16around to see what uh Jonas can do with me out here Jonas takes the shorter route through cuts
15:22him off on the exit they have to go double single on the way out good move that from Jonas
15:27up to six
15:28yeah I was kind of uh asking around just trying to get a handle on what had gone wrong with
15:33Herlings
15:33as uh you know factory Honda HRC there and uh of course not my place to know mechanically what had
15:39gone on but I did hear that there were some raised eyebrows and how challenging that Jeffrey is to
15:46equipment how hard he is on equipment so I think when you hear him at 14,000 rpm halfway around
15:52the
15:52racetrack there's probably something to that yeah always been the way though hasn't it nice uh line
15:58there improv from Lucas Coonan out across the ruts very a la jet
16:09that was a good sort of test shot there wasn't it from Herlings you know the kind of test photography
16:14just open up the rear end through the berm he's not thinking test photography right now though is he
16:20he's thinking getting his head down and just trying to pull back any lost time he's gone back out of
16:251.4 we'll get another split up into this left-hand turn in a minute Coonan fastest in sector one

16:32becomes 1.8 so just marginal gains once again for Coonan over Hurlings pulls it back we've seen the
16:40Fevera go past Geiser he's now in fourth place so here's Geiser in fifth Fevera just ahead of him in
16:45black through that final turn on the exit of turn one exit of turn one
16:56managed to get another race win a week ago yeah yeah and that might be what it comes down to

17:01know he's uh sitting nearly actually over 100 points out of this championship now 120 points it might
17:08just be hey let's see how many wins we can get down the stretch here uh he's gonna need a
17:11lot of help
17:12to be championship relevant but that's what happens when you don't you don't have good weekends you
17:17can't race the second race in France like there's a lot of reasons for it but uh certainly capable of
17:23winning on any given weekend won the qualifying race and then obviously just wrong place wrong time
17:28first turn spoke through the front wheel you know damaged wheel couldn't continue had to come in it was
17:33almost a lap because at that point no one's expecting you to come in that early in the race you
17:37know
17:38no time to signal leave that yeah you know just watching these two go out of here i wonder you
17:43know it seems like it's kind of about jeffrey's right there anticipation you know like we're all kind
17:48of waiting suspensively i wonder how much duress lucas is sitting here with right like he looks very
17:56comfortable to me and uh james stewart and you know in the pro motocross that talks about this a lot

18:01there's only a few places on the racetrack that a pass is possible so lucas would be
18:06really anticipating that the rest of the section not super worried maybe a little bit more as he's
18:11closing up here but i always wonder about that is how much are you really stressing it is now though
18:16you should be now that line was nice as well in and out of the turn early he got roughed

18:20fernandez here a year ago in this corner jeffrey hurlings wasn't close enough to do the same
18:25to lucas coonan and he's going to try and cut back to the inside here if he can
18:30coonan covers all bases so again in and out early try and attack him somewhere else but again right
18:38place right time lucas coonan we've still got a minute and a half plus two laps to go here what
18:42you just said there i'm going to pick up on you know the kind of duress that lucas coonan may
18:46be under
18:47i was going to say you know lucas coonan leading the race knowing that he's got hurlings behind him can
18:51attack at any point he's never going to back off it's kind of almost like you see the pit board
18:56it's hurlings and you go anybody but him please you know because i know i'm in for a rough ride
19:01if he's on his a game that's going to be like that for the next 25 minutes and that's what
19:05we've
19:05had he's not been able to switch off and relax mentally that's taxing yeah and jeffrey needs to
19:09throw everything at it he's got right here uh this is the closest he's been if he lets this lead
19:14extend again that yo-yo effect go back out i don't know with 50 seconds you know plus a lap
19:19i don't know that
19:20he's going to be able to reel that back in nothing in it between these two that's a big miss

19:27wonder if he thought he could get inside there but seemed a little mistimed wasn't necessarily
19:33close enough to see that weed extend again yeah that just seemed like a miscalculation to me and
19:39that looks like that may be the final roll of the dice for jeffrey hurlings because as we head up
19:43into
19:43this turn here seven tenths becomes 2.7 he's lost two seconds in a handful of corners and that may
19:49be
19:50all he wrote lucas kunan because uh yeah jeffrey as he said just misjudged that turn 11 top of the
19:57hill
19:57didn't get what he wanted out of it and then a couple more little mistakes here and there
20:01lucas kunan though the danger there is all of a sudden looks back oh hang on let's go back here

20:07and adamo well i'll tell you what i don't want that for breakfast in the morning do you no i'll

20:11that afternoon snaps on that what lucas kunan doesn't need to do here is just kind of go oh
20:16there's two two and a half seconds let's just back it off because you know in the blink of an

20:22going to come down very very quickly but fortunately for him two lap board going out this time around
20:28and he's going to have the biggest gap that he's had pretty much all race long it was two and
20:33a
20:33five four five as we head into this penultimate lap good display of riding again from lucas kunan yeah
20:43i'd like to i'd like to hear from jeffrey kind of what his thinking process was going off that inside
20:49that that was the decision maker for we'll see right we still have racing to go but that really
20:55felt like the moment yeah and jeffrey was nowhere near close enough to make that move so and that was
21:00one of those things where you go if you're close enough you do it on the final lap not with
21:03two
21:03laps to go because if you mess up the consequences are a two-second shift yeah and just jeffrey has
21:09so much experience and such a profound champion he would know that he's not close enough there right
21:14like i have one percent of his credentials and i knew he was nowhere near and you see him go
21:18back
21:19to that old line again but then is that part of the thing that kind of lucas does to him
21:26you know like
21:27puts him in those scenarios where all of a sudden you've got to try everything plus a little bit more
21:32and it doesn't work out and it costs you a bit more time yeah and i agree with that i
21:36do feel
21:37like he had to throw everything at it in that moment like i mentioned prior to that but it just
21:41you also know as a racer is this even possible is this past even realistic and it didn't feel like
21:48it
21:48wasn't maybe he reels it back in a little bit but uh that that was probably the end of the
21:54battle he's
21:55clean or over that little step there that single uh oh a little bit slight mistake yeah cost him a
22:00little bit but not too much but yeah that drone shot a minute ago where he just kind of doubled
22:04into
22:05that right hand turn he was almost completely over it wasn't he yeah they were they've been getting
22:09closer and closer that the the risk there is quick adamo muscles his way down the inside of pj
22:18moves up into sixth position i think that's going to be the end of that
22:22on the final lap half a lap to go is there any seconds here you can see this happening look
22:28as
22:28soon as he sort of turned right one thing on his mind jonas didn't see it coming until late
22:41anyway i can promise you if he gets an angle he's going back in with ferocity
22:48right so we are into the final lap then kunan the hurling still separated by 2.6 so even on
22:54his own with
22:54clear track he's not able to reduce that gap the bullet adamo up to six jonas seven
23:08yeah strange race for andrea adamo really because all of a sudden you know you see we're going to see
23:12the replay of the highlights at the moment and he was sort of second third challenging around that
23:18first turn he was eighth or ninth at the end of the first lap shuffled back like a pack of
23:22cards very
23:22very quickly yeah just i don't know if it was lack of intensity early or what was going on but
23:28uh it
23:29wasn't just one or two guys it was basically the whole weed pack moved into six or seven yeah and
23:34then he was able to regroup and go back past the likes of vial who basically were saying get out
23:39of
23:39the way on the first lap oh elzinger cross rutted oh tell you what that was awkward ben roy ktm

23:55slow to pick himself up there as well elzinger yeah he was in 16th place geertz's bike was laying on

23:59side of the racetrack yeah he lost about four or five positions very very quickly early on and then i

24:04thought okay but then yeah he's been part there for the best part of sort of uh 12 laps lucas

24:09wins a tense qualifying race here in mxgp in portugal picks up the full 10 points wins it by 4
24:16.3 seconds
24:17over jeffrey hurlings and uh yeah had to work hard for that one good respect between these two i'm sure
24:24as they hit the line but had to work hard every step of the way hurlings that one
