00:04You're watching Euronews' z fact-checking show The Cube.
00:07The eyes of football fans across the globe
00:09have turned to the World Cup,
00:10which runs until the 19th July.
00:12Watching tense, fast-paced games
00:14requires a great deal of focus,
00:16but so does consuming World Cup content online,
00:19given that false pictures, images and videos
00:21are increasingly doing the rounds.
00:23For instance, social media users
00:25shared a photo of a football supporter
00:27who looked like Adolf Hitler,
00:28but the image was in fact altered
00:30and no such fan resembling Hitler was present at the game.
00:34We uploaded the photo to OpenAI's verification tool,
00:37which detected a synth ID in a visible watermark
00:40that indicates the image was AI-generated.
00:43Social media users also placed
00:45Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
00:47in the stands of the Argentina-Austria game
00:50on the 22nd of June.
00:52There were no credible reports that he attended the match
00:54and we found yet another synth ID on the image,
00:56showing it was falsified.
00:58This post alleges that Swedish footballer
01:01Lukas Bergval told journalists
01:03that he appreciated all the love and support
01:05he was receiving from fans.
01:06He supposedly went on to add that
01:08every woman who has a crush on him
01:10should stop voting for mass migration
01:12or his people would not exist anymore.
01:15We transcribed the clip,
01:16but there was no mention of migration.
01:18Instead, the clip dates back to March
01:20and shows Bergval answering a question
01:22ahead of a Sweden-Poland football match.
01:24Another false image depicted the UK's
01:26outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer
01:28in a Croatia jersey,
01:29alongside former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.
01:32With a reverse image search,
01:34we found the original photo,
01:36which proved the real image had been altered.
01:38in the world.
