00:00Right, hello everybody, welcome back to the pod. We've already had complaints off camera that this is simply too leggy
00:05an episode
00:05but you join us back here on the ACFC NYC rooftop terrace because the sun is back out and I
00:10am so excited about this one
00:12because not to embarrass you, I'm joined by Dan Kahn here, not to embarrass you
00:16but we have been asking people
00:19who would you like to see us have on this thing and your name came up quite a lot
00:24and just as a personal thing, this was the one I really hoped we would get
00:29and I say that as a man who's waiting back on an email from the mayor's office by the way
00:32this is the one I hoped we would get because you haven't just been watching the World Cup
00:36you've been living the World Cup, I think that's the only way to describe it
00:40just to intro you ever so slightly, you're doing amongst other things
00:44ITV's Extra Time it's called, which obviously I have no way of watching in the United States
00:49but I've heard is really good and I presume I would have enjoyed all three episodes of
00:56it's unbelievable and the social stuff you've been doing as well is absolutely class
00:59do you want to just like, if for some reason people haven't seen this
01:03do you want to explain what it is you're doing, what is it you're getting to the heart of
01:06and what have you seen, just give me everything
01:09sure, so of course when a World Cup comes around
01:12the broadcasters go all in to make sure the game coverage is unreal
01:16the analysis is unreal, we'll get the biggest footballers to talk about the game
01:20but when you're coming to a place as iconic as New York City, as global as New York City
01:27it kind of makes sense to take people off the pitch a little bit and give them a guide of
01:32what does it really feel like to have a World Cup in what is the centre of the universe
01:38so my job is essentially to go around the city across six weeks and cover everything across New York culture
01:45whether it's football, fashion, food, music, history
01:50yeah, and meet people that live and breathe New York
01:53so then by the end of the World Cup, not only have you got a flavour of all the football
01:58you've also got a flavour of like what it really means to be in New York and be at the
02:02heart of it
02:02so that's what I've been doing
02:04and then at the same time I have my own project called Game Day Gourmet
02:08which is essentially finding the best places to eat around a game day
02:13so for the World Cup we've been going and meeting loads of different migrant communities
02:17loads of different nationalities where the Portuguese are eating
02:20where the Mexicans are eating, where the French are eating
02:22where the Argentinians are eating
02:23and just having a good time with them and finding out what the World Cup
02:27and what their country means to them
02:28so it's been busy but it's been so incredible
02:33and yeah, I was in Qatar in 2022 but this already feels like to me
02:38something that I won't ever forget
02:40I feel like we're going to use the word flavour on this about 5,000 times
02:43but can you just, so last night you were out, obviously Mexico
02:47they played a massive, massive game for them
02:48they won 3-0, it's a huge celebration again in Mexican culture
02:51because that keeps them in Mexico for the foreseeable
02:54it gives them a really good chance of progressing through the tournament
02:57finally getting past that, apparently for the fifth game
03:00but you were out with the Mexican community here in New York
03:03where were you?
03:04So I was in Bushwick in the heart of Brooklyn
03:06a super industrial area, a lot of graffiti art everywhere
03:09but it's a very local community
03:10so it's not the Brooklyn that you might see online
03:12where it's like Williamsburg and Greenpoint
03:14this is like real deep Brooklyn
03:16we were at a place called Football Cafe
03:18which prides itself on
03:20What do they do?
03:20Yeah, they pride themselves on giving everyone access to football
03:25free of charge in a really cool community driven space
03:28when I turned up, there was a low rider there
03:31there was a Taqueria there, there were a Mariachi there
03:35there were some Lucha Libres there hyping up the crowd
03:38Oh my god!
03:39And that was just before the kick-off
03:41and then it's a 150 cap venue on the inside
03:44but if you mix the outside
03:45there was well over 700 people there
03:48watching the game, watching every move
03:50and then celebrating late into the night
03:52so it was an absolute pleasure to be there
03:55It was a quiet one, was it?
03:56Oh man, it was
03:57My sunglasses right now, I'm wearing them for like
04:00We looked at this before
04:01Stylistic effect
04:02but really all I can see is beer stains
04:04all across my sunglasses
04:05If we thought the Brits could throw beer
04:07imagine shaking Modelo beer cans
04:10I was going to say that sounds like a really bad night
04:12with being in Modelo in Brooklyn
04:13Yeah, it was incredible
04:15Great food, great people
04:17and do you know what I loved the most as well
04:19when I was speaking to the Mexicans about
04:20how proud they feel to be here
04:22they were giving me a temperature check
04:24of what it really means to be Mexican
04:26or a migrant community in New York right now
04:29or in the world in Trump's America
04:30and they felt even more proud
04:33to say we want to showcase our culture to the world
04:36even more
04:37because the powers that be
04:39are trying to stop that from happening
04:40so it was so amazing to see that celebration
04:43and a real honour man
04:44I think there's probably a lot of that going on
04:46with the World Cup
04:47I mean we've seen what an unbelievable celebration
04:49of culture it is
04:50and I think when we look back at it
04:52you'll see stuff like
04:53the South Korean lads just deciding that they love Mexican people
04:56every single child born in Boston in the next nine months
04:59is going to be like vaguely Scottish
05:00like the more the culture is getting integrated and shared
05:03it's sort of like
05:04it almost makes the last five, ten years
05:08of just total political division
05:10and sort of cultural separation
05:12look even cheaper than it already did
05:14but I imagine if it's
05:15especially for a Mexican community
05:16you are a neighbouring country here
05:18you have huge centres of population
05:21dotted all, it's not just around the border areas
05:23it's huge in New York and places like that
05:24it must feel like the most important
05:27sort of few weeks of your life
05:29to be Mexican almost
05:30especially if you're living in New York
05:31yeah and I think that's what is so special about football
05:33it's like when you're walking around town
05:35how do you really show how you are
05:37without going and telling people how you are
05:40well how do you show people how you are
05:41without telling people who you are
05:43you wear a football shirt
05:44you wear a football shirt
05:45that interaction is there straight away
05:47and then from there
05:48you sing the songs
05:50you tell people about the songs
05:51there's a mariachi there
05:52there's a lucha libre there
05:53then after the game you're like
05:55oh where are you trying to eat
05:56oh there's an amazing taco spot right there
05:58all of those little touch points there
06:00are really just showing
06:01who you are and where you're from
06:02I've been astounded at the amount of football shirts
06:04this is my first time being in a country
06:07where a World Cup is taking place
06:08the closest I've had to this is
06:10I was alive during Euro 96
06:13but I certainly wasn't out and around
06:15in the host cities
06:16I think Newcastle had like three games or something
06:18barely attended by sort of the teams and the groups
06:21to just see like
06:23the amount of people walking around
06:26in football kits that you look at them
06:28and you think
06:28oh that's probably yours
06:30but then you see other people who like
06:31you've just bought those
06:33you know what I mean
06:34there's sort of an embracing of it
06:36which I really wasn't expecting
06:38and I know obviously like New York's in a bit of a bubble
06:40you can't really use that to be indicative of the entire country
06:43but the way this city feels like it is the centre of the World Cup
06:47even though there aren't any World Cup games taking place in New York
06:51like that's
06:51there's very few
06:52I think there's what seven
06:53no but they're in New Jersey
06:54there's nothing happening in Manhattan
06:57nobody who was floating around that island
06:59is going to a game that afternoon
07:01they're going to watch it in these population centres
07:04and in these cultural hubs
07:05and it's just it's blown my mind
07:07how much the World Cup feels like
07:09it's exclusively happening in Manhattan
07:12when it's not happening there at all
07:13yeah and I think that's why
07:14that's why ITV
07:15when they were figuring out
07:16what do they want to do for the World Cup
07:18they said well our slogan is going to be
07:20all in on ITV
07:21and where do we want to be all in
07:22we don't want to be hovering around studios
07:24left right and centre
07:25let's camp up in New York
07:27let's get a studio in Brooklyn
07:29and let's not go to the world
07:30let's bring the world to us
07:32because when you're in New York
07:33I mean Queens
07:35where we were watching the game
07:36with the Egypt fans on Steinway Street
07:38which is one of the craziest places
07:39to watch football
07:40that's called the world's borough
07:42I think it's the most languages spoken
07:44per square mile
07:46anywhere in the world
07:47what a stat
07:47yeah
07:48what a stat
07:48yeah there are languages
07:49from all over Latin America
07:50all over South Asia
07:52Southeast Asia
07:53across Europe
07:54so yeah man
07:56we're really in the heart of it
07:58like if there was a city
07:58to host a World Cup
08:01or if there was a fan cultural movement
08:03to experience a World Cup
08:04New York is the place
08:05the first day I was here
08:07I went to
08:08classic football shows
08:09oh yeah
08:09and I got talking to some of the people
08:11I know there
08:12and they were like
08:12how long are you staying for
08:13and I was like
08:13oh this is like the longest
08:14I'll ever stay in New York
08:15I'm here like pretty much
08:16just over a month and stuff
08:17and they were like
08:18the thing you're going to learn
08:19is that the thing about New York
08:21is it's the greatest country
08:22in the world
08:23like it's not the greatest city
08:24perfect
08:25it's the greatest country
08:26in the world
08:26I want to talk about the ITV stuff
08:27because that's been really
08:29so you've done three episodes so far
08:30so far
08:31episode one is basically
08:32just landed in New York
08:33yeah
08:34taught me
08:34taught me through
08:35what you go through on that one
08:36so essentially
08:36we land and just get a temperature check
08:38of what to expect
08:40it was 44 when I landed
08:41no and honestly
08:43when we landed
08:43I was so in shock
08:45at the humidity
08:46and everyone around me
08:48was acting like
08:48it was totally normal
08:49so I thought
08:50that this was it
08:52I was like
08:52because I'd been in
08:53I've been in Bangkok
08:54and I'd not experienced
08:55anything like that
08:56oh man
08:56and I thought that was it
08:57for six weeks
08:58it's going to be that hot
08:59and that humid
09:00but it's calmed down
09:01it's calmed down a bit
09:02everybody back home at the moment
09:03and now it's getting cooked
09:04they're having a mad heat wave
09:05they're like
09:05I can't believe it was 30
09:0636 yesterday
09:07and I was like
09:08I'm not impressed
09:08so I'm actually not impressed
09:10yeah yeah yeah
09:11so it's calmed down
09:12it's basically
09:12going and finding out
09:14where to eat
09:14going and finding out
09:16where people are going to be
09:17watching football
09:17going and checking out
09:18the ITV studio
09:19for the first time
09:20how was it?
09:21do you know what
09:21first of all
09:22the clarification is that
09:23it is a real set
09:25there's no green screen
09:26in sight
09:27all in
09:27all in I heard
09:27yeah and it is magnificent
09:29like when you go up there
09:30it really is breathtaking
09:31it really probably is
09:32the best view
09:33in New York
09:34sorry I'll stop you
09:35it's not even the best view
09:36in a football related content
09:38oh right sorry
09:38yes my bad
09:39oh wait no you're right
09:40because we're in your jersey
09:41yes sorry
09:41no I get what you mean now
09:42and it's in the heart of Dumbo
09:45and yeah
09:45it's a privilege to be part
09:47of a line up
09:47of so many incredible people
09:49like I'm not biased
09:50I'm not wedded
09:50to ITV
09:51I'm just part of the ITV team
09:53for the World Cup
09:54we're all license fee paid
09:55yeah and I'm truly honoured
09:57but when I look at the line up
09:58I'm like wow
09:59it is pretty crazy
10:00that Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane
10:01are my colleagues
10:02they made a bit of a fuss
10:03of you as well
10:03there's that really nice photo
10:04of you sitting on the steps
10:05when they announce it
10:06is that a real photo?
10:07no so what they've actually done
10:08is because of everyone's schedules
10:09yeah
10:10they've individually got everyone
10:11photoed
10:12because people have media commitments
10:13people can't arrive on certain days
10:14makeup is at a certain time
10:16of course of course
10:16so they've got everyone
10:17individually there
10:18and then they've brought everyone
10:20together in that photo
10:21so when I was leaning against it
10:23I didn't know
10:24who was going to be near me
10:25who was going to be around me
10:26and I was like
10:26oh like Roy Keane's
10:28are the same row as me
10:29or Adam Richmond
10:30is standing right next to me
10:31and I've grown up watching Adam
10:33since I was like nine years old
10:34so that photo
10:36will take me a long time
10:37to get over
10:38in the lead up to coming here
10:39I spent a lot of time
10:40just staring at the photo
10:41going how is that happening?
10:43because growing up
10:44the announcement photo
10:45of the pundits
10:47whether it's BBC
10:48or ITV
10:49or whatever
10:49it's always
10:50it was a big deal
10:51yeah
10:51it's sort of like
10:52it's almost the TV equivalent
10:54of when the squad gets in
10:54yes
10:55it's like oh
10:55who's going to be there
10:56and to think that I am
10:58to have made the plane
10:59yeah
10:59and for them to be like
11:00oh why don't you lean on the thing
11:02why don't you do something different
11:03that felt really cool
11:04why don't you have a bit of personality
11:05in this picture
11:06of all some of the biggest pundits
11:07and analysts in the world
11:08so it is
11:09and fully deserved by the way
11:10if you haven't watched the stuff
11:13the Game Day Gourmet stuff especially
11:14it's not just unique
11:15in the sense that
11:16it's a fantastic idea
11:18and it's really explored stuff really well
11:20but it's produced I would say
11:22to a level that
11:23feels like it belongs
11:25on a network like that
11:26I mean obviously
11:27we're past the point now
11:28where you need to sort of work
11:30with these really established
11:31massive brands
11:31to make something look good
11:32and find an audience
11:33it does just do that anyway
11:34which it has
11:35but it looks
11:36it looks the part
11:37do you know what I mean
11:38I appreciate it
11:38I don't think anyone
11:38who hadn't heard of you
11:39when that announcement got made
11:40who then went and checked out
11:41your stuff would have been like
11:42god where have they got this guy from
11:44you know what I mean
11:44it looks like you're already at that level
11:47well I think that's the thing
11:48when we started Game Day Gourmet
11:49and obviously all the credit goes to Giuliano
11:51who is my cameraman extraordinaire
11:53and my editor
11:53he's a crazy genius
11:54he's a Brazilian that's fluent in Japanese
11:56so I don't know if that kind of
11:58what languages do you speak Tom?
12:01I get about halfway through English
12:02alright there we go
12:03there's levels to this
12:04before he has to stop for a hydration break
12:05yeah yeah yeah
12:06so yeah he's the evil genius behind it
12:09and look we said that like
12:10just because we're hosting our stuff
12:12on social media
12:13it doesn't mean that we don't want it
12:14to feel like television
12:15exactly yeah exactly
12:16so we try and tell meaningful stories
12:19we're not trying to like feed you
12:21well to use a pun
12:22we're not trying
12:22we're not trying to feed you
12:23yeah we're not trying to feed you
12:25the story and say
12:26oh this is how Mexicans feel about this
12:28this is how
12:28we're trying to give you
12:30a little insider's track
12:31and give you a point of view
12:32of what it's like to be amongst the people
12:35during a time when they're celebrating
12:36and listen
12:37food and football
12:38are the universal languages
12:39they are the great connectors
12:40they are the great ice breakers
12:42you don't have to have anything in common
12:43and if you have one of those things in common
12:45you'll get somewhere
12:46yeah
12:46it's been really fun to do it
12:47so we've got loads more episodes coming
12:50we're trying to tick off
12:51how are you doing
12:52we're trying to tick off
12:53there's three up now isn't there
12:54well there
12:55no there's five now
12:56because when we actually landed
12:57the Knicks were on the verge of winning
12:59their first championship
13:00yeah yeah do you remember that
13:01in 53 years
13:02I may have got involved in that
13:04so that
13:05you're wearing Knicks colours right now
13:06so that ended up actually being
13:09our first episode
13:10so we came here for football
13:11and it ended up being basketball
13:12so that was incredible
13:13do you want to know
13:14do you want something really depressing
13:15about this
13:15just to give a comparison
13:17of the experience you've been having
13:18versus the experience I've been having
13:19that Knicks game five
13:21yeah
13:21was on at the exact same time
13:22as Scotland versus Haiti
13:23oh
13:24so I am obligated
13:26as someone who was producing content
13:27and analysing these games
13:28I was like well
13:28I simply don't get a choice in this man
13:30I've got to watch it
13:31yeah
13:31the network that carries the NBA games
13:34is not one of the networks
13:35we got for the package
13:35because when we were sorting this out
13:36we were like
13:37well I don't need the basketball
13:38so if you see over there
13:39see that building there
13:40that's opposite to where
13:42this apartment is
13:43and I was
13:43we've got the footage of this as well
13:45I'm literally recording
13:46the Scotland video
13:47going through the Haiti game
13:48and I'm watching
13:49the basketball
13:51through the guy over there
13:52his apartment window
13:53epic
13:54and I'm like
13:55trying to look at how many seconds
13:56are left
13:56I can barely see it
13:57and when I started the video
13:59Spurs are winning
14:00quite not comfortably
14:01but it's a big deal
14:01I'm like oh
14:02it won't be tonight
14:02it won't be tonight
14:03I'm not going to miss anything
14:04that looks like it's only about
14:05five points now
14:07they're never ahead
14:08they're never ahead
14:09and then I realised it happened
14:11because I started hearing the car horns
14:12that's it
14:13and I was like
14:14oh my god
14:15that's it
14:15so I got the Scotland video
14:16done as quickly as I possibly could
14:17jumped in an Uber
14:18and went to what happened
14:19it was insane
14:20we watched it in Brooklyn
14:21in the heart of Fort Greene
14:23and that was a
14:23no
14:24that was a
14:25that was a very very crazy experience
14:27I thought I was going to enjoy
14:28having you on this
14:29but you've actually just made me feel sick
14:30listen listen
14:30there's plenty of time for us
14:31to get together
14:32for Game Day Gomez
14:32we've done the Knicks
14:33we've done Argentina
14:34we've done Brazil
14:35we've done Cote d'Ivoire
14:36we've done Senegal
14:37we've done France
14:39that's coming out today
14:40we've got Mexico coming
14:42we've got Portugal
14:43which was incredible
14:44we went to Newark
14:45which is about
14:4620 minutes from here
14:48deeper in New Jersey
14:49yeah yeah yeah
14:49at one of the oldest
14:50social clubs
14:51in America
14:52it's been around
14:53since the 1920s
14:54and if you walked in there
14:56you would
14:56what
14:56you would literally think
14:57you're in Lisbon
14:58like all the decor
14:59all the signage
15:00all the tiles
15:01everything is Portuguese
15:02so
15:03have you been to Boston as well
15:04did you probably be to Boston
15:05oh my god yeah
15:06episode one was getting
15:07a temperature check
15:07episode two was meeting
15:08Martha Cooper
15:09who was one of the first
15:11documenters of graffiti culture
15:13ever in the world
15:14so when young 13 year olds
15:16were starting to spray paint
15:18on walls in the Bronx
15:19in the 70s and the 80s
15:20Martha Cooper decided
15:21I needed to document this
15:23and now graffiti culture
15:24all over the world
15:25all of it gets traced back
15:27to what she was documenting
15:29back then
15:29so speaking to her
15:31was ridiculous
15:32like seeing her photos
15:33and seeing her gallery
15:34and being the only person
15:36in there with her
15:37as she's talking
15:37through her gallery
15:38was a real special experience
15:40and I think
15:40that shows what we were
15:42trying to achieve
15:42that it's not about football
15:43but it very much is about
15:45New York culture
15:45and then we got on
15:47to the football
15:47for episode three
15:48yeah yeah yeah
15:48the next natural step
15:49after doing that
15:50is go to Boston
15:51yeah so I actually
15:52arrived in Central Park
15:53and I thought we were
15:53going to do
15:54kind of like another
15:55walk and talk
15:55guide to the city
15:56and then the producer
15:57just handed me
15:58an ITV envelope
15:59and they said
16:00you
16:01your challenge
16:02is to get to Boston
16:03for Morocco
16:05versus Scotland
16:05in time for kickoff
16:07and I was
16:07how long do you have
16:08so it was
16:09what time was it
16:10it was at 8am
16:11and then kickoff
16:12was at 6
16:13that day
16:13yeah
16:13so I thought
16:15that's fine
16:15it's like a three
16:16and a half hour train
16:17that's fine
16:17but they gave me
16:18some rules
16:19so I couldn't use my phone
16:20I had to give
16:21my bank card
16:23as well
16:23so the producer
16:25had the cash
16:26and I had to get there
16:28using as many modes
16:29of transport as possible
16:30but every mode
16:31of transport I used
16:32they gave me $20
16:33towards my kitty
16:34so I got $20
16:36because I was walking
16:37to the subway
16:37that was walking
16:38right okay
16:38then I got onto the subway
16:40and I bought a ticket
16:41for like $3
16:41but then because I used
16:43the subway
16:43I got another $20
16:44$37
16:45I can do this
16:47I got as far out
16:48of the city as I could
16:49I don't even know
16:49where I was
16:50but then
16:52to get the bus
16:53to take me anywhere
16:54towards Connecticut
16:55or upstate
16:57that was like $60
16:58so I needed to figure out
17:00what I could do
17:00wipe out
17:01right okay
17:01so then I mean
17:03I'm sure you guys
17:03will see it at some point
17:04but I ended up on a boat
17:05going along the
17:07Long Island Sound
17:08which was bonkers
17:09because it wasn't even
17:10taking me in the right direction
17:11I just needed to get $20
17:12somehow
17:13so I got on there
17:15but yeah
17:16basically you just need
17:17to watch and see
17:17whether I got to Boston
17:19in time
17:19how I got there
17:21on very limited resources
17:22but the American people
17:24came in handy
17:24the Scots came in handy
17:26ITV producers
17:27showed me no remorse
17:28they gave me no favours
17:29great
17:30but we'll see
17:30how I got there
17:31and no spoilers
17:32no spoilers
17:33and again I couldn't
17:34possibly have watched that
17:35over in this country
17:36but I assume
17:37it's actually really really good
17:39and everybody else
17:40should watch it
17:40do you know what
17:41can I have full disclosure
17:42I've actually not even
17:43seen it because I'm here
17:44so
17:44again
17:46nor I
17:47nor I
17:48and I could not
17:48possibly comment
17:49on how good it is
17:50so that's episode 3
17:52of like
17:53I think we're doing
17:5320 episodes
17:54across 6 weeks
17:55so episode 4
17:57should be super exciting
17:58as well
17:59it's food related
17:59and yesterday
18:01I wrapped on
18:02a shoot with
18:02Adam Richman
18:03the host of
18:04Man vs Food
18:05the host of
18:05First We Feast
18:06a legend of
18:08the travel show
18:08Anthony Bourdain
18:10was actually his mentor
18:11which I found out yesterday
18:12which I thought was
18:13absolutely insane
18:14and we just ate
18:15we just
18:16we landed in Queens
18:17to see how many
18:17World Cup Nation
18:18cuisines we could eat
18:19just by walking
18:20and discovering them
18:21and
18:22and in an hour
18:23we ticked off 7
18:24yeah
18:25just within a little walk
18:26like we were just
18:26circling
18:27can you remember them
18:28so we did
18:29did you come in American
18:30no we actually
18:30didn't do American
18:31that probably would have
18:32been an easy win
18:33yeah
18:33no we didn't
18:34just going to 7-11
18:34just getting to 7-11
18:36so we did Ecuador
18:37okay
18:38we did
18:39what was the Ecuadorian food
18:40Ecuadorian food
18:41was a goat curry
18:42with plantain
18:43and then they gave us
18:44ceviche de camarón
18:45which is
18:46a prawn ceviche
18:48with lime juice
18:49spices
18:49very fresh
18:50unbelievable pronunciation
18:50so we went
18:52we did Ecuador
18:52I'm not expecting you
18:53to remember all of these
18:54by the way
18:54let me see
18:55for a flavour
18:56yeah we did Argentina
18:57we did Brazil
18:58we did Mexico of course
19:00I think we did France as well
19:02just one cigarette
19:03oh yeah
19:04just one
19:05he knows culture
19:06because in our
19:07Game Day Gourmet episode
19:08of France
19:09we've literally got a shot
19:10of like four people
19:10just having a fag
19:11French food culture
19:13you can just
19:13if you go around
19:14you have like one taco here
19:15like a couple of steak slices there
19:16one cigarette from France
19:18they
19:18exactly
19:19I've been to France
19:20I know how to eat
19:21so yeah
19:22plenty more coming
19:22this is such a
19:23this is such a boring
19:24broad question
19:25of all the little pockets
19:27you've been in
19:27in New York so far
19:29not what's been the best
19:30because I think
19:32that would probably be
19:32too hard to question
19:33which one surprised you
19:34the most
19:35which one were you not
19:36expecting to be
19:36as vibrant
19:37or as big
19:38or just as warm
19:39and you were like
19:40wow this is like
19:41people need to know
19:42about this one
19:42yeah so I think
19:43the thing is
19:44because of my
19:45interest in food
19:46and culture
19:46I knew really well
19:49what I was getting into
19:50when I came here
19:51I think the main thing
19:53was that I just wanted
19:54to show
19:55the people
19:56that might not know
19:57so the first thing
19:58that came to mind
19:58was going to
19:59Steinway Street
19:59which is
20:00a very famous street
20:01in the heart of
20:02Astoria in Queens
20:03it's got a huge
20:04Middle Eastern
20:05and Arab community
20:06there so
20:07if you want
20:07Algeria
20:08you want Morocco
20:09you want
20:09Tunisia
20:10you want Egypt
20:11you want Jordan
20:12that's where you go
20:13so when we watched
20:14the game over there
20:15you would have thought
20:16we were in Cairo
20:16genuinely
20:17and
20:18then when they won
20:19I realised
20:20it was actually
20:21Egypt's first ever
20:22win at a World Cup
20:23and it was
20:2593 years in the making
20:26and who else
20:27but Mo Salah
20:28to get a goal
20:29and an assist
20:29so to be there
20:30on such a momentous day
20:32for Egyptian football
20:33and Egyptian people
20:33was so special
20:35and then of course
20:35we saw the scenes
20:36of him in Vancouver
20:38actually joining in
20:39with the fans
20:39yeah that was crazy
20:40imagine Ronaldo
20:41or Messi
20:41celebrating with the fans
20:43in the middle of the street
20:44that's essentially
20:44what happened
20:45but I think
20:45what surprised me
20:46was little Portugal
20:48in Newark
20:49New Jersey
20:50like deep
20:51in New Jersey
20:52we went there
20:53and I just couldn't
20:53believe it
20:54like how
20:55I couldn't believe
20:56how deeply
20:56a community
20:57could embed themselves
20:59in New Jersey
21:01where like
21:02every single shop
21:03was a Portuguese pastry shop
21:05a Portuguese restaurant
21:06now my cameraman
21:07Juliano
21:07he's from Brazil
21:08so when we went
21:09to the Churrascaria
21:09to get the Piri Piri chicken
21:11he literally said
21:12this is exactly
21:13how it is back home
21:15he goes
21:15this is exactly
21:16what we eat
21:17on a Sunday
21:17in Brazil
21:18that was amazing
21:19and to see that
21:19sporting club
21:20the Portuguese
21:21which has been
21:22open since 1921
21:23and they've
21:24they've entered
21:25football leagues
21:26all over the country
21:27and they have got
21:27they're like the real
21:28Madrid of sporting clubs
21:29like how many
21:30trophies they've got
21:31no one in the bar
21:33speaks English
21:34they're all Portuguese
21:35you go to the back
21:36and you've got a
21:37Befana
21:37which is like a
21:38pork roll at half time
21:39it's like seven dollars
21:40there's an old lady
21:41at the back
21:41serving it up
21:42that for me
21:43was the most surprising
21:44because I didn't think
21:46aside from the
21:46Latino community
21:47and aside from the
21:48Middle Eastern community
21:49I didn't think
21:50a European community
21:51could be so deeply
21:52embedded in New York
21:53without sort of like
21:54becoming
21:55like an approximation
21:56of just like
21:57absolutely
21:57the middle road
21:58absolutely
21:59this is the kind of
22:00question I should have
22:00given you in advance
22:01because this feels like
22:02you might take a bit
22:02of thinking time
22:03what's the best thing
22:03you've eaten
22:04oh
22:05what's the best thing
22:06you've eaten
22:06you know what
22:06that's not actually that hard
22:07I've had some incredible food
22:09but the thing that surprised me
22:10so much
22:10Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire
22:12so Senegal
22:13I've known of a dish
22:14called tia budien
22:15it's a roasted fish
22:16they cook it with
22:17steamed spicy rice
22:18and they put veggies
22:19in there
22:20they put it all in one pot
22:21and just let it do its thing
22:22and I'd known of it
22:23but I'd never had it
22:24they served me it
22:25after the Senegal game
22:27when I was in Harlem
22:28fish off the scale
22:30the rice off the scale
22:32and all the veggies
22:33the aubergine
22:34the carrot
22:34the cabbage
22:35all of it spiced
22:36and every single one
22:37cooked to perfection
22:38like none of it
22:38the carrot wasn't soft
22:40the carrot had
22:41that perfect texture
22:42the cabbage wasn't soggy
22:44had a perfect texture
22:45the aubergine
22:45had a bit of char to it
22:47so it's like
22:47they cooked it all in one pot
22:49but somehow timed it all
22:51so everything was
22:51individually perfect
22:52just hypothetically
22:53if someone had
22:53four or five hours
22:54to kill this afternoon
22:55before the game
22:55where would they go at that
22:56they would go to
22:57Baobab restaurant
22:59in Harlem
23:00in Lipperti Senegal
23:01they'd order the tia budien
23:02which I think is like
23:0320 bucks
23:04but literally three of you
23:06could eat one plate
23:06it's not a joke
23:07I'll be the judge of that
23:08and then just up the road
23:11from there
23:11is a restaurant called Silla
23:12which is an Ivorian restaurant
23:13I'd never had Ivorian food before
23:16they made me a roasted red snapper
23:18with onions and tomatoes
23:20a really spicy chilli sauce
23:21on the side
23:22and couscous
23:22which was crazy
23:24they were like
23:24yeah we get our couscous
23:25from North Africa
23:26and we have it in Cote d'Ivoire
23:28so those two things
23:29me and Juliana
23:30we looked at each other
23:31like oh my god
23:32because you know what to expect
23:33when you're getting a good taco
23:34in New York
23:35you know what to expect
23:36when you go to a French bistro
23:37you know what to expect
23:38when you go to an Argentine steakhouse
23:39but that West African cuisine
23:41I'm 100% going back
23:43off camera to eat that
23:45what are you most
23:46well okay
23:46other than that then
23:47what have you still got coming up
23:49that you're most looking forward to doing
23:51aye aye aye
23:52alright so we've got
23:53the Mexico episode
23:54I'm so excited for that to come out
23:56but I'm really excited to film
23:57with the Colombia fans
23:58that is going to be
23:59really really special
24:00and other than that
24:01the other countries
24:02that we're trying to do
24:03we'd love to do countries
24:05that we've not
24:05really come across before
24:07so Cabo Verde
24:09they are on the verge
24:10like if they get a result
24:11in their final game
24:12they're in the next round
24:14there's a Cape Verdean cafe
24:15in Brooklyn
24:16that I would love to go
24:16and hit up
24:17is that dependent on them
24:18getting through
24:19yes
24:19well
24:21much to play for
24:22for the camera purposes
24:23yes
24:24but if not
24:24I will definitely
24:25be going
24:26there's a Haitian community
24:27here that has got
24:28a real sort of mix
24:29between African
24:30and Caribbean
24:31culture
24:31that I'm looking forward
24:32to getting into
24:33because we don't have
24:33anything like that
24:34in London
24:34we've got more
24:35traditional Caribbean
24:37communities like
24:38Guyana and Trinidad
24:39and Jamaica
24:39but nothing Haitian
24:42and other than that
24:43I'm looking forward
24:44to going on a
24:45New York pizza crawl
24:46because I've not
24:46had time to do that
24:47right so you've
24:47jumped ahead
24:48to what my final
24:49question is
24:49to anybody
24:49who spends time
24:50in New York
24:50what's the best slice
24:51now
24:51so there's
24:52three answers
24:53to that
24:53the first answer
24:55is Lindustry
24:56Pizzaria
24:56this is the one
24:57everyone's been
24:58telling me to go to
24:58I have not yet
24:59found the time
25:00there's three
25:01isn't there
25:01there's one in
25:02Williamsburg
25:02one in Little Italy
25:03and one in
25:03West Village
25:04any of those
25:05three you would
25:05recommend in particular
25:06so Williamsburg
25:07is the original one
25:08but you don't want

26:25and I was like
26:25that looks so good
26:27for anyone growing up
26:28outside of New York
26:29New York pizza culture
26:31was put onto us
26:32by things like

26:35sort of reference
26:36Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
26:37those are the things
26:38that got us into it
26:39and then for a third
26:41truly special experience

27:22I would have said
27:22you've completed
27:23New York pizza

27:28like little sort of
27:29diary style videos for them
27:30nothing particularly exciting
27:31but I did go
27:33I did have a day in Manhattan
27:34and we said to the members
27:36they were like
27:37oh is that where
27:38Joe's pizza is
27:39and I don't mind Joe's
27:40I quite like Joe's
27:41it's the first place
27:42I ever went in New York
27:42where I've got like
27:43a proper authentic slice
27:44and I know it's a total
27:45terrorist trap now
27:46and I know it's a dollar slice
27:47that charges you $6
27:48and it's not
27:49it's not all that
27:50but just for the vibe
27:51I always encourage people
27:52to go and just like
27:53go stand on the line
27:53go stand on the line
27:54and see how quick it is
27:55and get your slice
