Transcript
00:00I thought I might give you an interview. I could fill you in on all the behind-the-scenes.
00:05Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're doing a major deep dive on the DCU.
00:10We'll be getting into spoilers for various DCU movies and shows, so consider this your warning.
00:16You're big and you're stupid, but I know you love me.
00:21Rebooting from the DCEU
00:23The people of Earth are different from us, it's true.
00:27But ultimately, I believe that's a good thing.
00:30Before the DCU, there was actually another cinematic universe that DC had called the DC Extended Universe,
00:35or otherwise known as the DCEU.
00:37Considering how much of a smash hit the Marvel Cinematic Universe was,
00:41it made sense that DC would want to get in on the hype train.
00:44Unfortunately, numerous failed films, countless controversies, and several studio shake-ups
00:49made the DCEU a bit of a hot mess.
00:52What about the civilian contractors who corroborated my story?
00:55The Pentagon is denying that there was a ship.
00:58Of course they are. That's what they're supposed to do. It's the Pentagon.
01:02Perry, come on. It's me we're talking about. I'm a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter.
01:06Then act like it.
01:07It wasn't all bad, of course. The first Wonder Woman movie was a massive success.
01:11Not to mention the first Aquaman movie made a billion dollars,
01:13and it's still DC's highest-grossing movie ever made.
01:16Warner Bros. also snatched director James Gunn up after he had a brief falling out with Marvel.
01:21This led to him directing The Suicide Squad, a team-up movie about Misfits having to do good,
01:25which was well-received by both fans and critics.
01:28No one has a show-off.
01:29Unless what they're showing off is dope as f***.
01:32That being said, a few wins weren't enough to sustain the DCEU,
01:36as its reputation had taken hit after hit.
01:39Things got so weird with this franchise that even The Rock tried to take things over with Black Adam,
01:44only for that project to fail to push the needle.
01:49Don't worry about that. I can get another one.
01:51By this point, it was clear to fans that the DCEU was nowhere close to rivaling the MCU,
01:57and as a result, things needed to evolve.
02:00On October 25, 2022, James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed as the co-heads of DC Studios.
02:07DC Studios itself was a brand relaunch, as all prior movies were under the DC Films banner,
02:12which was run by the past studio head, Walter Hamada.
02:15Gunn and Safran's new roles officially went into effect November 1st, 2022,
02:20a week after they were hired.
02:22Now, Peter and I have gotten pretty lucky in terms of the four projects that are coming out over the
02:25next year.
02:26First, we have Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
02:29Shazam! has always been off kind of in his own part of the DCU,
02:32so he connects very well.
02:35That moves directly into The Flash,
02:37a fantastic movie that I really love that resets the entire DC Universe.
02:42Around this time, Henry Cavill also revealed on social media that he would not be returning
02:47as Superman after all.
02:49This was a serious shock,
02:50considering he had earlier claimed that he would be staying as Superman for more installments,
02:55yet those plans were clearly scrapped.
02:57You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards.
03:03They'll race behind you.
03:04These significant restructurings sent a clear message that things were changing.
03:09EU didn't officially end until December 2023 with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
03:13It was widely known that Gunn's new version of DC would be arriving soon.
03:17So, what does the death of the old DC have to do with the new DC?
03:21Well, you know the saying,
03:23out with the old, in with the new.
03:25Since Warner Brothers already knew what James Gunn was capable of doing,
03:29they felt like it was the right choice to entrust him as a studio head alongside Peter Safran.
03:34The company's main goals were to better connect their various DC properties into one unified world,
03:39rather than have several disjointed movies and TV shows that were off in their own bubbles.
03:44Our jobs, mine and Peter's,
03:46is to come in and make sure the DCU is connected in film, television, gaming, and animation.
03:53A shared, cohesive cinematic DC Universe was the mission statement,
03:57and also a vision that James Gunn had promised,
03:59not just to shareholders, but also to the fans.
04:02We need to start making clear who's the human and who's the eagle.
04:05I'm the human and...
04:11Dumbass.
04:12What are you doing?
04:14The initial DCU lineup.
04:16So, Peter and I, along with a group of very talented writers,
04:20have started to map out an 8-10 year plan
04:22of what DC Studios will be in film, television, and gaming.
04:27On January 31st, 2023,
04:30DC's official YouTube account uploaded a video properly announcing the DCU
04:34and introducing what its upcoming slate would be.
04:37Next up is the big one,
04:38the true beginning of the DCU.
04:40This is called Superman Legacy.
04:43This is being written by me.
04:44I'm in the middle of it.
04:45I'm having a great time doing it.
04:47And Superman will be released into theaters July 11th, 2025.
04:52The video featured James Gunn as he walked us through Chapter 1 of the DCU,
04:56which is called Gods and Monsters.
04:58All the DCU projects that fans could expect to see within the next couple of years
05:02fall into this first chapter.
05:04Not every project in this chapter was talked about in this video,
05:07but nonetheless, a good amount of titles were revealed.
05:09We also learned that any non-DCU projects that DC might still want to explore
05:14would be appropriately titled under an Elseworlds banner.
05:17If something is outside of that,
05:19like Matt Reeves' Batman or Todd Phillips' Joker or Teen Titans Go,
05:24that it is clearly labeled as DC Elseworlds,
05:28outside of the mainstream DCU continuity.
05:31Creature Commandos was the first DCU title announced,
05:34which is an animated series about monsters having to do missions for the government.
05:37Not too unlike how the Suicide Squad works.
05:40The battalion, calling themselves the Sons of Semiskira,
05:43violently cross the border into Pekolistan.
05:46The Sons are said to be working at the behest of the rogue Amazonian
05:50and reputed sorceress, SirSeg.
05:53Up next was Waller,
05:54a live-action show about Amanda Waller with Viola Davis set to reprise the role.
05:58And all you need to know is you work for me.
06:00I can change with a phone call.
06:02I have friends too, you know.
06:05There you go.
06:07Calling?
06:07After this was the announcement of Superman Legacy,
06:09which promised to be a big, action-packed exploration of the Man of Steel for a brand new age.
06:15We also heard about Lanterns.
06:17This is a prestige HBO original about the Green Lanterns,
06:20where the cosmic grandeur is instead swapped out for a down-and-dirty Heartland murder mystery.
06:25Though it's an earth-bound show,
06:27there's promises we'll get the more traditional sci-fi elements along the way.
06:31A movie about extremely brutal heroes known as The Authority was also promised.
06:35While a Wonder Woman project wasn't announced here,
06:38we did find out about Paradise Lost.
06:41This is a prequel series all about the female warriors of the Mascara.
06:44Ares developed a weapon, the worst ever devised.
06:47Ares, you mean Ludendorff.
06:49I mean Ares.
06:52Ludendorff is Ares.
06:54Right after this was The Brave and the Bold,
06:56a film where Batman has to navigate crime-fighting alongside his son Damian Wayne.
07:00Though Gunn didn't directly mention it in the video,
07:03the second season of Peacemaker was also considered to be part of the lineup.
07:06We all might die, okay?
07:08Happens every day to people tougher than you.
07:10And you!
07:10No, not often.
07:11You know, people as tough as me, they normally die of old age.
07:14That's just stats.
07:14Then, to close out the slate,
07:16we're at Booster Gold Show,
07:18a movie called Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow,
07:20and a dark and dreary Swamp Thing film.
07:22This lineup is essentially the foundation for the DCU,
07:25meaning that these are basically the stories we have to look forward to
07:28for the next five to eight years.
07:30They're incredibly important to me.
07:31I knew that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do something very different.
07:37Every project in here has the potential to make or break this fledging cinematic universe.
07:41But, of course, plans can change.
07:44This is what we were promised to get back in 2023.
07:47But how much of this slate has actually held up now?
07:50I was just touching base to see when you think you might be coming back.
07:53You know, I'm just worried that you're not going to find your stride here
07:56if you keep going off-world all the time, Kara.
07:58The lineup now.
08:00Fast forward to now, and the DCU has officially been here for a little while now.
08:04Creature Commandos released in December 2024,
08:07and Superman Legacy released in July 2025.
08:10This is the Bell Reeve Non-Human Interment Division.
08:14For over 50 years, only those at the uppermost levels of security clearance are aware of its existence.
08:20By using these prisoners, I think we can arguably circumvent our new restrictions.
08:25Superman Legacy actually got a name change, though,
08:28as the Legacy subtitle was dropped, and the film was just marketed as Superman.
08:32David Cornswit was cast as the iconic Kryptonian hero, officially replaced in Henry Cavill.
08:37Shortly after the release of Superman came the second season of Peacemaker in October.
08:42Now, we're just a short amount of time away from Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow and Lanterns in the Summer.
08:47Like Superman, the Supergirl movie also ditched its subtitle and will be just titled Supergirl.
08:51Crypto and I at least had each other.
08:56Honestly, I thought we were lucky.
08:58But besides stuff that has already been released and stuff that's releasing very soon,
09:02how about new projects?
09:04Well, as expected, we discovered more in this slate over time.
09:08New DCU movies include a Wonder Woman solo project, a Clayface body horror.
09:12We're also getting a Superman sequel of sorts called Man of Tomorrow.
09:15I don't get it. What's bad about that?
09:20The people there are simple and profoundly confused.
09:26Weak of mind and spirit and body.
09:29There's also a Teen Titans movie expected, as well as a Deathstroke and Bane team-up film.
09:34Side note, before we get into the TV side, can we just acknowledge how interesting it is
09:38that we've gotten and are continuing to get more live-action projects revolving around Batman villains?
09:43There's the 2004 Catwoman, the Joker duology, Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey,
09:49the Penguin series, and now a Clayface horror flick and a Deathstroke Bane action romp.
09:54What's next? A killer moth movie?
09:56Actually, that would be pretty cool.
09:58Either way, it's a fun time to be a fan of Batman's rogues gallery.
10:03Where's Cassandra Cain?
10:04You? Again?
10:13Anyways, back to what we were really here for.
10:16The TV side of the DCU has gotten a new addition with Mr. Miracle,
10:20an animated adaptation of Tom Cain's acclaimed comic.
10:23There's also a Blue Beetle cartoon that's expected and a live-action series following Jimmy Olsen.
10:28With that one in particular, there were reports that it was titled DC Crime,
10:32but those were since debunked.
10:34Now this, what I'm about to tell you, is a part of the first chapter.
10:37It's not the entire first chapter.
10:39The idea for the Olsen spinoff, though, is to present it as an in-universe docu-series
10:44spotlighting bizarre situations and villains, and it may even feature Gorilla Grodd.
10:48There's two sides to every coin, however.
10:51While there's been numerous new projects getting greenlit,
10:53there's also been old projects getting shelved.
10:56For a while, a Sergeant Rock movie was reportedly in the works.
10:59It even had big names like Luca Guadagnino attached to direct,
11:03and Colin Farrell rumored to be a possible casting choice for the character.
11:07This project has since been cancelled, however.
11:09Several other projects, while not officially cancelled,
11:12have either been put on the back burner, or we've gotten little to no updates on.
11:16These include The Authority, Waller, Booster Gold, and Swamp Thing.
11:20Heck, even The Brave and the Bold is in a bit of a weird rut right now.
11:24Damian Wayne is my favorite Robin.
11:26He's a little assassin who Batman tries to get in line,
11:30and so this is the story of the two of them,
11:32and the beginning of sort of the Bat family in the DCU.
11:36Annie Muschietti, who directed the DCEU Flash movie, is attached to directing.
11:40But when the project will come out, it's anyone's guess.
11:43It's not exactly in development hell right now, so the pitchforks can be put down.
11:47That being said, Gunn has explained that he doesn't want this movie
11:51to release in the same calendar year as Matt Reeves in Robert Pattison's non-DCU,
11:56The Batman Part 2.
11:57That anticipated sequel is expected to release in October 2027.
12:00Your choices have consequences.
12:02Jesus Christ, choices?
12:04You know, whoever the hell you are, you obviously grew up rich.
12:07Was it worth it?
12:08What?
12:09Compromising yourself for money.
12:11This means it can be anywhere from 2028 at the earliest
12:15to potentially sometime in the 2030s before the DCU Batman gets its own movie.
12:20Wayne.
12:25He's the only one we didn't get.
12:28All that being said, we have a much better understanding of the DCU
12:32now that we've gotten a couple of projects under our belt.
12:34We can look back at what was initially proposed
12:37and now see how it holds up to what's released.
12:39We are also much more aware now that not everything that was originally announced
12:44might come into play anymore.
12:45Through the newer projects that have been greenlit,
12:48there's also this better grasp of what their approach towards the universe is.
12:51At the core, the DCU is a world with multiple different and distinct perspectives.
12:57A story shapes hearts and minds.
13:02Withstands the test of time.
13:05And changes the way we see the world.
13:10Different director, different stories, different vision.
13:13If you think about it, a bleak and visually grotesque Clayface horror movie
13:17is going to exist in the same world as a colorful and cheery Superman blockbuster.
13:23That's pretty nuts.
13:24Detective Ethan Bennett terrorized Gotham City as Clayface
13:28with his ability to change his shape and mold his features.
13:32Man, what I'd give to be able to mold this mug.
13:35Lanterns also seems to be like it's going a different route from both Superman and Clayface.
13:40From the jump, it was said that it would be taking inspiration from True Detective.
13:44And based on the teaser trailer we got, those dark and moody vibes are definitely there.
13:48Each of these projects are clearly taking a drastically different approach from the other.
13:52And honestly, we're here for it.
13:54Have you ever talked with the other Lanterns?
13:56I'm the only human.
13:57They're aliens.
13:58One of them's a f***ing squirrel.
14:00What this all shows is that the DCU is home to a whole bunch of diverse tones,
14:05atmospheres, and genres.
14:06James Gunn expressed that this was his desire for the DCU in the past,
14:09but seeing is often believing.
14:11While the MCU has been the more dominant franchise in Hollywood,
14:15a common complaint with Marvel is how so many of their movies and shows have very similar feel.
14:20That's not to say every project is the exact same,
14:23but a solid amount of them follow a similar formula and directors often have to work within an in-house
14:28style.
14:28But if that's Marvel's strategy,
14:30DC's instead is to give the directors the powers to express their stories in the way they want.
14:35Story is king.
14:36At least that's the promise.
14:38Master Wayne.
14:39Alfred?
14:40I'm sorry for listening in,
14:42but I've tracked the Russian's phone to a warehouse near the port.
14:45You're locked onto it.
14:47I don't deserve you, Alfred.
14:49No, sir.
14:50You don't.
14:51If the DCU is actually able to successfully diversify its portfolio
14:55and dip into other genres with their stories,
14:57then it can potentially be a real lucrative world for filmmakers.
15:01There's a concept called superhero fatigue,
15:03which suggests that movie goers are burnt out with comic book movies.
15:06Whether you believe it's real or not, it's a different topic.
15:08But regardless, it's pretty safe to say that fresh and innovative stories
15:13can do a world of wonder for the superhero genre.
15:15This city is mine.
15:33Imagine if we got a heist movie with Plastic Man
15:36or a coming-of-age teen drama with Kid Flash.
15:39Heck, you can even do a musical with The Joker and Harley Co-
15:43Okay, you know what?
15:44Maybe not that one.
15:46Take my hand.
15:48Stay here, my friend.
15:51I'll find my way back to you.
15:54You probably get the idea of what we're suggesting, though.
15:57We just want to stress that DC could get truly nuts
15:59and push the boundaries of what we imagine comic book movies and TV can be.
16:03Yeah, that's pretty dang exciting.
16:05It's gonna be a fun adventure, like it was the first time.
16:08It's just better.
16:09The impact and reception so far.
16:11We've been talking a lot about what the DCU can be,
16:14but now we should focus on what it actually is.
16:17Like we mentioned earlier,
16:18there's been some DCU projects that have already come out,
16:21so why don't we examine how they perform?
16:24Creature Commandos was a successful cartoon with a solid story.
16:27It didn't necessarily set the world on fire,
16:29but it did introduce general audiences to a plethora of DC's weirdest monsters.
16:34The show is also technically the start of the DCU
16:36in the sense that it was the first DCU project to be released.
16:39Bearing that in mind,
16:40the true beginning for this universe was Superman.
16:43The movie was an undeniable success,
16:45which grossed a healthy $618 million at the box office worldwide.
16:49It also got a fair amount of praise from fans and critics.
16:52The story wasn't groundbreaking,
16:54but it expertly showed us a vibrant world with lots of love.
16:57I think we need to get to those portals up there.
16:59Uh, right.
17:00How do we work them?
17:02I don't know, but we'll figure it out.
17:05It also showed us how sometimes kindness is the best superpower of all.
17:09David Cornswit proved that he had the chops to portray Superman.
17:13Honestly.
17:14In the summer that this movie came out,
17:16there was a period of time when it felt like people were just more hopeful and optimistic.
17:20If you were active on social media around this time,
17:23you probably even heard the phrase,
17:24the gun didn't jam.
17:26DC was finally on the right track thanks to this movie.
17:29Then there was the Peacemaker problem.
17:31Everybody stop, okay?
17:32I'm leaving town.
17:32There's nothing to get out of here.
17:33Hey, Adrian!
17:35What the?
17:35Maybe this is a little controversial,
17:37but Peacemaker Season 2 nearly derailed all the momentum that the DCU had built up.
17:42The overall plot was fine,
17:44and that intro sequence with Foxy Shazam was actually pretty awesome,
17:47but the finale was incredibly underwhelming.
17:50A major appearance and some shocking plot revelations were promised for the last stretch of episodes.
17:54Granted, we got a Lex Luthor cameo,
17:57which was fun, but there was hardly anything else to write home about.
18:00The story ended on a cliffhanger with Christopher Smith stranded on a planet called Salvation,
18:05and then that's basically it.
18:13It wasn't a terrible season of TV necessarily,
18:16but it was a real letdown.
18:18Fans just wanted something more satisfying,
18:20but things were over-promised and under-delivered.
18:22Plus, considering that there aren't currently any plans for a third season,
18:26the show has essentially wrapped up for good with a massive stinker.
18:29Before we move all the metahuman prisoners here,
18:32I thought a little due diligence was required.
18:34See what effect this dimension has on the human body.
18:38I want to thank you for volunteering.
18:40Don't just take our word for it.
18:41The finale is the lowest-rated episode of the entire series on IMDb.
18:45This might seem like nitpicking,
18:47but for a while, this finale cast some real doubt on James Gunn.
18:50Peacemaker was solid when it was a quirky side story to the DCEU,
18:54but trying to turn Peacemaker into a foundational part of the DCEU?
18:58Sorry, but that's an undeserved level up.
19:01That's another thing which makes the DCEU frustrating.
19:03You see, instead of being a hard reset,
19:06the DCEU is instead more of a soft reboot.
19:0870% of the DCEU might be brand new stuff,
19:11but the other 30% are the lingering remnants of the DCEU.
19:15This makes it difficult to buy into a fresh start
19:17when there's still an old universe we're occasionally still calling back to.
19:21What are you guys doing?
19:24Well, I, you, we're here to save you.
19:29You were gonna save me?
19:32It was a really good plan, too.
19:34The gun hasn't necessarily jammed,
19:36but maybe it's time for some gun control.
19:38Did you guys just look at the big picture?
19:40We're trying to figure that out, Chris.
19:41Seriously?
19:42Yeah.
19:43That's the last of our puns.
19:45Ultimately, James Gunn can't be the sole creative contributor here.
19:48Everything that we have currently gotten from the DCEU
19:51was something where he was at the helm of it.
19:53His specific style of filmmaking is the only taste we have,
19:56but we should get more unique flavors.
19:58On the bright side, we are going to get more variety and more projects
20:02where other creators are at the helm.
20:04Craig Gillsby directing Supergirl,
20:06Dean Laurie's taking over Creature Commandos,
20:08James Watkins directing Clayface,
20:10and Chris Mundy's show running Lanterns.
20:12Gunn's style of storytelling isn't bad.
20:14That being said,
20:16if this is a shared universe,
20:17it's only fair to actually, you know,
20:20share with others.
20:21Hey, is there anything nearby?
20:23Nothing but desert for hundreds of k's, mate.
20:26Nothing but desert.
20:27He's wrong.
20:29What are you doing?
20:30Let me do it!
20:31The Road Ahead
20:33He murdered my innocent family.
20:39If the DCU is going to rival the MCU,
20:42it leads to some questions.
20:43Does DC have their own Avengers Endgame level crossover
20:46they're building to?
20:47Who's the Thanos of this franchise?
20:50We can't spend time discussing lineups and brain trust
20:52without eventually speculating
20:54on what the culmination of everything is.
20:56We're searching everywhere.
20:58Just to find someone to care.
21:01What we know for certain
21:02is that the DCU is planning to take
21:04a different approach to their crossovers.
21:06Like we mentioned earlier
21:07with the Peacemaker finale,
21:08a planet called Salvation
21:09is going to be part of the DCU's
21:11big overarching narrative.
21:12In the comics,
21:13there's a storyline called Salvation Run.
21:15In that book,
21:16DC villains are rounded up
21:18and exiled to a distant planet
21:19where they have to govern themselves.
21:21It's very Lord of the Flies
21:23and chances are a version of this
21:25will play out in the DCU.
21:26We call the planet Salvation.
21:29And while Bordeaux here and her team
21:31found the location,
21:32Otis here and his team
21:34discovered a way to contract the journey
21:36so we can move directly from our doorway
21:38to the doorway in the new planet
21:40without ever going through QUC.
21:42We also know that Man of Tomorrow
21:44is a team-up movie of sorts
21:45involving Superman and Lex Luthor.
21:47The two will inevitably butt heads
21:49as they work together to fight Brainiac.
21:51Other heroes are also expected to be in the midst
21:53and there's a good chance
21:55that the movie will address
21:56slash further the Salvation storyline.
21:58There's also been plenty of online chatter
22:00in the past
22:00about the DCU pulling from
22:02Darwin Cook's The New Frontier.
22:04It's a period piece story
22:05that follows the classic DC characters
22:07and transitions them
22:08from their golden age
22:09into the silver age.
22:10It's ultimately a celebration of superheroes
22:12and held in extremely high regard.
22:14James Gunn has confirmed
22:15that this iconic comic book
22:17will have some level of influence
22:18on the DCU.
22:19The director's vision
22:21and the vision of the writers
22:22and all of the creators
22:23is unique.
22:25It's something special.
22:27Storytelling is always king.
22:29That's all that matters to us.
22:31With this in mind,
22:32there's speculation that DC
22:33will introduce the Sentra
22:34as the big bad.
22:36The Sentra is a giant sentient island
22:38with psychic powers
22:39that tries to destroy humanity.
22:41It's wacky, disturbing,
22:43and classic mythological
22:44larger-than-life comic book supervillainy.
22:46If this book's right,
22:47it's a whole new life form
22:48we've never even imagined.
22:51Or it could be nothing more
22:52than the ravings
22:53of some demented cartoonist.
22:55It's been made clear
22:55that the DCU wants
22:57to be something different,
22:58so it's not likely
22:59they'll have their own
23:00huge Infinity Saga.
23:01That being said,
23:02the DCU will be building
23:04to some bigger threat,
23:05so the breadcrumbs we have now
23:07can lead to a much larger treat.
23:09The reality is that
23:10we'll have to wait
23:11a little while longer
23:12to find out what it is,
23:13but that's the exciting part.
23:16As more movies and shows
23:17are released,
23:18then the DCU gets more realized.
23:20We highlighted concerns,
23:21but the DCU has time to grow,
23:23learn from their mistakes,
23:24and become greater
23:25than its predecessors.
23:26All in all,
23:26the DCU is promising
23:28to be something that's bigger
23:29than the sum of its parts,
23:30and we can't wait
23:32to see how this journey continues.
23:33Got this place cleaned up
23:34pretty good.
23:35Uh-huh.
23:36Cleaned yourself up
23:36pretty good, too.
23:37You think so?
23:39Yeah.
23:39I think it gives you character.
23:42Maybe one day
23:42you'll give me a name.
23:44Well,
23:464 is a name.
23:47So is Gary.
23:48Are you looking forward
23:49to seeing the DCU grow?
23:50What's your favorite project
23:52they've released so far,
23:53and which one are you
